2014- VOLUMEIII Dear CETA/ACTE Members, Welcome to the final
2014 - VOLUME III Dear CETA/ACTE Members, Welcome to the final newsletter for 2014. This is a very busy time of year for most people as they attempt to balance work commitments with family commitments. With the continued increases in beef prices, even busier times are ahead for those involved in this part of ET practice, and therefore highlighting the importance of the Embryo Export Approval Program for those exporting embryos. The success of this program is incumbent on the continued support of CFIA towards those delivering this program and it is our hope, together with CLGA, that the proper levels of funding to maintain and expand markets will be continued. I would like to take this time to acknowledge some changes at the Board level. On behalf of CETA/ACTE, I would like to thank Dr. Ken Christie for the time he donated these past 6 years. His insight and input on the Board and his time spent as chair of the Certification Committee is certainly appreciated, as is his friendship. Also, I would like to welcome Dr. Luc Besner to the Board in his role as Chair of Health Regulations and Industry Liaison. Luc I hope you find this endeavor worthwhile and fun! Last but not least, thank-you Dr. Rob Stables for your successful stewardship as President of CETA/ACTE these past 2 years. In this Issue… President’s message…...1 Upcoming CE Opportunities …………….3 Membership Notices..5-6 2014 Joint Convention Sponsors & Exhibitors…7 Interesting Web Sites….9 Companies with ET software……………………..9 Article of Interest…11-12 The joint CETA/ACTE and AETA convention held in Middleton/Madison this past fall was a success. Many positive comments were conveyed through the convention surveys regarding the program and it appears that the convention had a positive financial outcome. I would like to thank our Secretary Manager, Karen McDermott, and the convention committee for their time and diligence in helping to make these conventions a success. They are hard at work planning our joint convention in Niagara Falls next fall and in making preparations for upcoming conventions such as the joint CETA/ACTE, AETA & IETS convention to be held in 2017. It has been a very busy time for the Certification Committee this fall as the Certification Standards are undergoing an update to be presented to the Board for approval at the mid-year BOD meeting held in Montreal, January 31, 2015. Please bring forward to our board members any concerns you wish to have discussed at this time. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a happy, restful holiday season. Take time to enjoy yourselves and your families, and all else that is important to you. May the promise of the New Year bring you hope, love, and success. SUMMARY: Only about 50% of the embryos of modern dairy cows have been reported to be viable by 7 days after ovulation as compared to ~80% in non-lactating cows. A growing body of evidence indicates that low circulating progesterone after ovulation in dairy cows seems to be related to lowered conceptus growth and most likely mediated through changes in the endometrium. However, other factors may also play a role in the decreased fertility, with most issues related to poor oocyte quality and/or inadequate uterine environment to support early embryo growth before day 7. Low circulating calcium concentrations (<8.59 mg/dL) in the postpartum seem to be a key element to explain poorer immunity, uterine environment, and overall health in the lactating cow. Additionally, lower circulating glucose and the resulting insulin-resistant state of postpartum cows required to cope with high levels of milk production has recently been associated with reduced embryonic growth. Cows experiencing clinical or subclinical uterine infections in the postpartum period have lower postpartum fertility. Higher milk production does not seem to be a major drawback to uterine involution postpartum and/or subclinical uterine infections indicated by proportion of PMN cells. But poor uterine environment (greater proportion of PMNs) can greatly impair oocyte fertilization capacity. High producing cows may have a lower circulating concentrations of both E2 during pro-estrus and P4 in the diestrus (due to their greater steroid metabolism) likely causing a suboptimal uterine environment. More precise synchronization systems are in part capable to counter act this excessive metabolism of steroids in the lactating cows and producing fairly satisfactory pregnancy results to timed AI breedings. Ultrasonographic measurement of endometrial thickness (ET) near ovulation could be a good indicator of hormonal environment (i.e. low P4 and/or high E2), and could be used to assess whether the uterus has been exposed to adequate concentrations of hormones compatible with optimal fertility. It appears that P4 priming prior to the periovulatory period combined with a rapid decrease in circulating P4 after induction of luteolysis and greater circulating E2 near ovulation were critical for the remarkable changes in ET during the periovulatory period and ultimately good fertility. Heat stress can induce a rapid release of PGF2 from endometrial tissues regardless of reproductive status of the cow. The embryo may have problems in inhibiting PGF2 release during heat stress. Heat stress causes changes in the oviduct smooth muscle motility that could perturb transport of gametes in the oviduct and transport of the embryo to the uterus. This, in… Canadian Embryo Transfer Association / Association Canadienne de Transfert d’Embryons Newsletter / Bulletin Article of Interest ~ 12 ~ 2014 – Volume III continued… …addition to perturbed follicle development and oocyte quality, may help explain the sharp drop in conception results experienced by herds during warmer months of the year. Negative net energy balance (NEB) compromises fertility in several ways. Besides alterations in CL regression mechanisms through changes in oxytocin receptor expression induced by NEB, uterine involution may also be compromised by severe NEB with associated increased concentrations of NEFA commonly observed in the early postpartum in lactating dairy cows. Cows having severe NEB have much greater levels of inflammation in the uterus, and greater expression of genes involved in tissue remodeling. In a study cited, cows that lost more weight from calving to 3rd week postpartum had lower rates of fertilized structures, more degenerated embryos, and less transferable and freezable embryos. These results are also in alignment with a much worse conception rate for cows that lost more body condition score after freshening. This highlights the importance of minimizing NEB and excessive body score losses during the postpartum period in dairy cows.
