Voorwoord WK Longcasting
Dear reader,
Welcome to the 16th edition of the World Championships Longcasting. This week,
participants gather from as many as 11 different countries here in Zwijndrecht to make a
'throw' to become World Champion.
But few people know that our country is a sporting superpower in the sport of longcasting. By
providing its support to this event the province of Antwerp wants to make this sport better
known to the general public. Our province is a sporty province, where we also want to give all
opportunities to smaller sports.
The province of Antwerp supports international sporting events, because we believe that
seeing sports, encourage to sport. Top sport inspires and encourages people to sport. By also
organize tournaments of lesser known sports we encourage all to seek a sport at one of the
thousands of sportsclubs in our province. Sport also creates a sense of belonging, sport
connects and reinforces the social life.
With our excellent facilities and organization the province of Antwerp also wants to introduce
themselves to athletes and spectators from home and abroad as a welcoming province where
beside sports culture, tourism and nature are also important.
In the name of the province of Antwerp I wish everyone a nice tournament. I would like to
congratulate the Belgian SportsCasting Federation with the organization. I wish all
participants the best of luck, and the public an exciting competition.

Dear friends,
It is a great honor for the Belgian SportsCasting Federation vzw and me
personally to welcome you to the 16th World Championships Long Casting to
be held in Antwerp. This year for the first time the men will be joined by the
Ladies who will have their first FIPS-m meeting.
It has been 11 years since the best of our sports joined at a Worlds in Belgium.
The venue we have chosen is very logical. It is the home center for more than 25
years of Belgian Casting and is the venue of one of our 2 member clubs, the
Belgian Surfcasting Club vzw who celebrates there 25th year anniversary in
2013. The same venue was used for two international events known within the
casting circuit : The "Famous" Big Danny Open in 2008 and The Gust Wattelé
event in 2012. It provides the demanded space combined with the necessary
safety.
The hotel logistics are designated to Holiday Inn Express Antwerp. This hotel is
easy to reach from outside of Antwerp and is ideal to travel to and from the
casting venue, but is also ideal to explore the magnificent city of Antwerp.
The city of Antwerp has many things to offer. Visit the unique and famous
historical buildings and expositions, take a walk along the river on the "kaaien"
or go shopping in the various shopping streets and malls. Taste (but not all 300+)
Belgian beers when you sit on a relaxed terrace.
I would like to thank all helpers who worked before and during the
championship. A big thank you goes to the Province of Antwerp and the Region
of Flanders for their support and the city of Antwerp for their logistic support.
Without it we couldn’t organize such a big event.

History of Belgian Casting
Distance casting is something anglers, especially sea-anglers, has always fascinated. Logical really, otherwise
there was never such a thing as a "casting" rod invented. A casting-rod gives you larger fishing area. Ultimately,
this increases catches, hopefully both in size and in number. The motivation seems so simple; who can cast
captures more fish. A logic that even for an outsider seemed to grasp, if not a night fishing on a windy beach can
help to make this clear.
The casting-story could stop here. Yet something let us suspect that there is more going on. Spread over the
globe groups of people make desperate attempt with rods to cast as far as possible … on land. Needless to say
that an accidental spectator gets confused. This bizarre anglers do not even use bait and therefore do not want to
catch something. They simply run behind their lead after casting it, what seems to create pleasure because the
ritual is repeated several times. It all becomes more strange when it seems that the "dry-fishermen" are organized
and even organize national and international competitions.
Yes my dear, this phenomenon listens to the name "surfcasting”. Even in our small country it already exists more
than 20 years. The story should therefore begin….
The '60 and '70 may be regarded as the prehistory of the Belgian casting. Catches from the beach were still more
than adequate and therefore not everyone was convinced of the usefulness of a good casting-technique.
Nevertheless, near Antwerp a group of casters was active and they casted and measured all distances effectively
and tested fishing equipment. From this period tribes the one-piece beach rods of Sportex and the first conical
fixed spools of Bobinyl. They were not genuine practical things, but there were respectable in the distances
achieved with it. In 100 sea fishing tips of Iwan Garay was to read: "We have seen well-known casters like
Robert Sebrechts achieve distances of 170 metres with this; really measured meters!" The usefulness of casting
on dry land was set in the spotlight even with the technique still limited to the so-called overhead tumb.
In the late 70s, the first casting-news began to blow over from England. Names like Lesley Moncreiff, Nigel
Forrest, John Holden and Paul Kerry shifted the boundaries of distance casting. This was possible with
techniques such as the lay-back (off the ground), the back-cast and the pendelumcast. For the last technique
relatively short (3.3 - 3.6 m) "fast taper" rods were used, along with small reels. The contrast with the current
materials and techniques was difficult to comprehend. The interest was slowly increased with us, mainly due to
the exceptional cod catches of the British "long-range" beach anglers.
However, it would take until the early '80’s before the casting-virus hit Belgium. Again, the culprits are to be
found around Antwerp. Gust Wattelé, at that time manager of the fishing store Leeuwlantsport, left the main land
in search of rods suitable for real distance casting. He came after all kinds of wanderings to a certain Terry
Carroll, who just began with the construction of castingrods under the today legendary name "Zziplex".
Not long after moving the first blanks to Belgium, the first pendulum-rods are dismantled and tested under the
promotion of Gaston Verhaegen. Casters of the first hour as Dirk Aerts and Erik Knuyt do with these rods the
first attack on the magical 200m limit. Between 1984 and 1989, the first real castingtourneys are organized under
the name "Grand Prix Leeuwlantsport". English topcasters as Neil Mackellow and Les Baldry give
demonstrations with casts of at least 200 meters. This attracted
crowd and participants to these competitions, despite the often
harsh winter weather. Shortly thereafter the Belgian record
officially exceeded 200m, first in 1986 by Dirk Aerts and then
by Rudi Yseboodt 1987.

Distance casting grows meanwhile to a real hype amongst beach
anglers. The team around Leeuwlantsport carry around as
gypsies to practise on fallow land around Antwerp. During
weekends the instructions and demonstrations are busy attented.
Everybody wants a try with a Zziplex-pole and casting-reel,
though only a handful of good casters appears to succeed. The
same group also draws over the pond for the first time to
participate in English castingtourneys, an incredible experience
for whom attented at the time.
Meanwhile, the need grows for a better organization and on May 22, 1986 the Belgian Long Distance Casting
Club was founded. Admittedly, with 10 members and without their own field, but the enthusiasm was there all
the more. Again, driven by Gaston Verhaegen that year even a daring trip to the "Inland casting" or casting with
light weights was taken. On the Belgian Championship, organized by the Casting Club of Flanders, some dare to
use a pendelumcast with - yes - 18g. It yielded many view and not unpleasant distances, but it was not a
successful combination with the "heavy lifting".
In 1987 Leeuwlantsport and Zziplex get company - or should we say competition - from a new series of
castingrods released under the name "Antwerp" by angling store De Snoek. This store also organizes its own
Grand Prix immediately, as the basis for a healthy portion rivalry between two groups of casters. Also in 1987,
the Antwerp (former Belgian) Long Distance Casting Club gets to use a castingfield owned by the
petrochemicals company Exxon. After a long gypsy life the Antwerp casters finally have their own place, and on
May 27, 1988 the Belgian Casting Club (BCC) is established. This is the foundation for the modern organization
of the surfcasting in Belgium.
The BCC board, very ambitious, wasted no time. The first Belgian Championship, including a women and
youth-ranking is soon a reality. Even abroad the BCC-casters were notably with third place on the Zziplex Team
Challenge. Rudi Yseboodt puts the clubrecord at 223.36 m, followed shortly afterwards by a new Belgian record
of 230.80 m casted on a tourney of the Dutch Surfcasting Federation (DSF). The years 1988 and'89 were in all
aspects exciting times for the Belgian casting.
In 1990 and 1991, the field in Belgian is no longer available and their competitions are held to the Netherlands.
The Belgian Surfcasting Club (BSC) reorganises itself and the activities will be reduced to the essence;
organizing the Belgian Championship Surfcasting and participation in foreign competitions, including the UKSF
and DSF.
The growing foreign contacts lead in 1992 to the first international regulations and agreements in cooperation
between England, Belgium, The Netherlands and Italy: the European Surfcasting Association (ESA). In 1994,
according to the ESA , the first European Championship is organised by the DSF in Amsterdam. The major
revelation in this EK is South Africa, that however after years of economic and sporting isolation, with a full
"Springbok - team" took part. The South African casters excel in discipline and technique. By our standards with
cumbersome and heavy long rods they put down outstanding performances. It was clear from the beginning, with
our materials they would be formidable sporting opponents.
In 1995 suddenly "Big" Danny Moeskops appears on the scene, first a bit uncertain, but soon it becomes clear
what a talent the BSC fetches with him. Under the good care of "coach" Erik Knuyt the attack deployed to all
existing castingrecords. That same year with 232.75 m Danny breaks the Belgian record of Rudi Yseboodt from
1988. In 1996 he cites the Belgian team with the 3rd place on the first ESA Worlds in Ipswich-UK.
From then on, Big Danny words for the world and acquires the Belgian Surfcasting an "eternal" international
reputation. It also gets the CIPS interest in surfcasting and in 1997 the CIPS first Worlds was held in KielGermany. As expected Danny wins the individual gold medal here, as well as in subsequent Worlds and
internationals in France, Italy and the United States. Only in 2002 he was "surprised" with a 2nd place at the
world championships in Vicarello, Italy. Similarly, all existing records are broken spectacularly. So Danny
breaks in 1998 with the legendary record 260.89 m 150g of Neil Mackellow, as well as the record of 175g Dave
Simpson with 272.39 m, both with 0.35mm.
For international reasons the BSC starts casting in 1998 with 125 and 175g besides the 150g. This is a good
choice because in 2002 the club organizes the first World Championship surfcasting in Belgium in Ostend. Until
today still the biggest World Championship with the most participants (57). This is a milestone for the BSC and
attracts new castingtalent for the Belgian team.
From 2003 the BSC follows the international regulations, which still changes unfortunately a couple of times. In
2003 we go to the Worlds with two new talents. John De Vreeze and Kris Van Cauwenberghe. A highlight for
the BSC follows: Danny 1, John 4 individual and the first time a number one in team, with 150g all other teams
beaten. Finally we became 4th and had hope for the next few years. Since 2003, a ‘real’ fishing tourney is
organised under the leadership of Frankie Dobbelaere, an annual highlight.
In 2004 almost the same team went to the Worlds in the south of France. New world record for Danny and 255m
for John. But the real surprise was yet to come. A strong France was necessary to hold us from 1st place. A silver
medal in team and individual gold, another special moment for the Belgian Casting Sport.
Also in 2004 the Belgian SportsCasting Federation is formed to unite all casting disciplines in Belgium and to
promote the start of more castingclubs.
In 2005 and 2006, we do not send a team. The financial costs which the participants have to bear is the main
reason. Danny continues to be the caster to beat and wins medal after medal.
In 2007, there is again a team for Worlds participation. We are 4th, but perform beyond expectations yet again
by beating a number of strong teams.
In 2008 we are organising the 'Big Danny Open’ where the amount participators is unique with the participation
of 14 countries and more than 91 casters from 4 continents. The World Championship is still dominated by
Danny.
In 2009 the Worlds is in Portugal. Even in the extreme circumstances Danny still wins all. A team could not be
formed due to financial reasons.
In 2010 in Saint Cyprien / Southern France we have again a team to participate. We are again 4th and before
some strong teams like for instance the 1st strong Italian team. Danny loses since a long time a day win on 150gr
but remains No. 1 over all weights.
In 2011 Pisa in Italy we have a team with big ambitions. However, also in other countries, castingsport gets a
boost. We are 5th after Argentina that fights towards the top. But Italy with a remarkable young talent, Alessio
Massa, does a step forward. Danny loses again one weight class, to Steve Lewis of England. But over-all Danny
remains number 1.
Also in this year, after 24 years, again a 2nd casting club is born. Surfcast Flanders is founded .
In 2012 the Belgian Surfcasting Club holds a remarkable event: The Gust Wattale Memorial. It is a wonderful
event between casting friends from around the world to honour a man who was the
base of our sport in Belgium.
The World Cup in 2012 took place in Greece. We do not have a team again and for
the first time in years, the casting is dominated by someone else. Alessio Massa is the
overall winner and Danny had to settle with one gold medal. But casting becomes
more international. George Bonis of Greece wins the 175gr and Argentina takes the
bronze in the team-event. But Italy is substantially the strongest nation. With a new
rule set it was a remarkably well organized event.
In 2013, the World Championship is hosted by the Belgian SportsCasting Federation.
Therefore Both Belgian clubs go together for a perfect organization. Again we go for
a new standard in the history of casting: 72 participants from four continents and 11
countries will set a new standard for future organizers of World Championships.
Remarkable is that in the 1st national team 3 atletes already were included in the
Belgian Team for the Zziplex Invitational in 1995. They achieved the first success as
a team for Belgium.
