On the Calendar
Hi everyone,
This month we are starting elections and if you did not make the general meeting then you need to show up in November to cast
your vote. Please come out and vote.
Please mark your calendar for December 8th. This is the date for our annual escort of the kids from St. Vincent de Paul to La Jolla
Cove Suites for a Christmas celebration. We have a lot of new members that are not familiar with this ride. We will meet at the
dealership at 3 pm with kickstands up at 3:30 pm. We ride down to St Vincent de Paul where we meet up with the limousines that
will carry the kids to La Jolla. We then escort the limousines up to La Jolla Cove Suites where the kids get to meet Santa Claus
and Mrs. Claus. They also feed the kids and then we give the kids a gift. The gifts we give are purchased from the money we raise
throughout the year for this charity. If you have never joined us with this event you do not want to miss it. When you see the kid’s
faces as all the Harley Davidson’s roll in or when the kids pick out the gift that they have wanted all year long. It makes it all worth
it. So make sure that you mark your calendar and get the time off to come out for this ride. Watch for more information to come as
we get closer to December 8th.
HOG is a place to come out to ride and have fun, to make new friends and life long friends. This is what HOG is all about. It is
where we do not have to worry about what our political views are or what our religion is. Is there a right or wrong view or religion?
No. But HOG is not the place to push your views or your religion. With that said, We all are working very hard to make this the best
HOG chapter around. This is where we all come to RIDE and HAVE FUN.
See you all on the road,

Hello SD HOG Family,
As many of you already know on July 11th, 2010 I was involved in an accident on the Texas Looseys Ride. Even though there was no damage to
other vehicles or any damage to public property, it was my obligation to report the accident. I was unaware that I needed to do this until I was
speaking to my insurance company about a recent billing and was informed that my license was on “hold” or suspended with the State of California. When I questioned as to why it would be suspended, she stated that I had not filed an SR1 with the state. I immediately called California
DMV and was placed on hold for almost an hour. I finally got to talk to a live person and was told not to worry, just file the form (SR1) and keep a
copy with me.
California law requires traffic accidents on a California street/highway or private property to be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within 10 days if there was an injury, death or property damage in excess of $750. Untimely reporting could result in DMV suspending a driver license. Accidents involving vehicles not required to be registered such as an off-road vehicle (OHV), implement of husbandry, or
snowmobile occurring on a military base or occurring on the driver's own property involving only the personal property of the driver and there
was no injury or death are not reportable.
The law requires the driver to file this SR-1 form with DMV regardless of fault. This report must be made in addition to any other report filed with
a law enforcement agency, insurance company, or the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as their reports do not satisfy the filing requirement. An
insurance agent, attorney, or other designated representative may file the report for the driver.
The law requires every driver and every owner of a motor vehicle to be "financially responsible" for any injury or damage resulting from operating
or owning a motor vehicle. The minimum insurance level for "financial responsibility" is public liability and property damage coverage of
$15,000 for injury or death of one person, $30,000 for injury or death of two or more persons and $5,000 property damage per accident. Comprehensive and collision insurance does not meet the legal requirement.
§1806 of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) requires the DMV to record accident information regardless of fault when individuals report accidents under the Financial Responsibility Law or if law enforcement agencies or CHP investigate and make a report.
In closing the “Advisory Statement” on the SR1 form reads “The accident information on the SR- 1 is required under the authority of Divisions 6 -7 of the California Vehicle Code. Failure to provide the information will result in suspension of the driving privilege.”
Cover your butts and be safe!

Hello San Diego Hog Family,
At our General Meeting in September many of you had a chance to meet Miriam, David and Gary came to talk to us about the San Diego
Ride for Kids. This ride was a fundraiser put on by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF). The event proceeds are used to support
critically needed medical research. You all reached out to David and Miriam and made them feel so at home, many of you purchased a
bracelet from David. This is how he does his fundraising by selling the bracelets and necklaces that he makes.
Many of you asked how else you could help and you did just that. Sunday was cold and a little wet but this was a rain or shine ride. MJ and
Piper came out and volunteered at the Family Star Tent, (a star is one of the children who has a brain tumor). Steve P., Bobby G., Steve F.,
Mitch S. and Raoul O. all came out and took Star’s or their family member’s on the Ride for Kids. If you all could see the faces of these kids,
they had such a great time. I can never thank you all enough. Don’t worry if you weren’t able to make it to the ride this time, next year’s San
Diego Ride for Kids is October 16, 2011. It is truly worth every minute of your time !!!!
THANKS !!!!!

Treasurer’s Report:
All looks good for a final fiscal stretch run for 2010. We have made some changes with the bank; this will help us to maintain
more stringent controls of the dollars we collect. So far this year we have a nice bundle of funds to help us with our year end
charity work. This is due to the many of you who come to our events and participate in the activities.
The question is always asked, how much money is a Chapter allowed to have on hand? The goal of the Chapter is not to have a
bundle of money on hand at the end of the year. We are not in this to earn money or be an investment club. Our focus is to ride
and have fun! We spend your money in a wise and prudent manner and what we raise from our events is donated to charity at
year end. Keep in mind, a H.O.G. Chapter is not exempt from taxes so it behooves us to spend down and donate at year end.
Another FAQ, can we publish the Chapter financial reports in our newsletter? There is no prohibition against such a practice,
but it is not recommended. Once distributed openly in the newsletter, it becomes public information and we are a private club.
This information is for Chapter members only and you can find out by asking any primary officer or attend the officer meeting
held the Tuesday night prior to the General meeting.
I know it will be said somewhere else in this newsletter, but please purchase your Christmas party ticket ASAP. Kimberly has
worked hard with the hotel to improve our menu and drinks. For $30, if you only come to eat it is still a good deal. As you
know, we provide much more than food. There is a guarantee that frolics and fun is involved.
As a side note, some of the expenses you incur on your motorcycle adventures may be tax deductible. See me if you have any
questions regarding this particular comment.

FIT TO RIDE
The single most important safety feature on your motorcycle is YOU!!! The danger of operating a heavy powerful motorcycle (a
semi- extreme sport) is greatly magnified if you the driver/rider are not physically fit, awake, aware and mentally prepared.
I recently heard a horror story of a rider literally falling asleep riding down the road. Drifting off at 60 mph (in the dark) crossing
center lines and fog lines is as potentially fatal as driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs and prescriptions.
Coffee is a temporary, frequently used, “gloss over the problem” solution our society uses to stimulate the nervous system. Not
enough……..
If we truly want to ride strong and comfortable we need to prepare “ahead of time” for the sport we love. We need more than casual attitude of “Oh, the wind will clear my head” or “It’ll be an easy ride. I’m not going very far”.
The meetings designed to prepare riders for the long distance qualifying rides of Iron Socks, Iron Butt and Extreme Iron Butt
stress 2-3 months of “extra clean” living, physical exercise and lots of quality sleep. The focus of their info is to strengthen the
mind and body to handle extreme stress and improve endurance. The Hoka Hey ride was recently completed from Key West Florida to Alaska. This qualifies these riders as extreme athletes.
Although our local HOG Chapter doesn’t usually ride to those extremes, the importance of “being fit to ride” is still the same.
We’ve all felt that “all day in the saddle” road-weary feeling or the “now I need a nap”/ after lunch fog.
Are you a fit and strong rider or just lucky so far??????
Ok…. Enough of my ranting and raving. There is a method to my madness. Watch for Part II and Part III of this article in future
HOG newsletter issues. I will include specific exercises and stretches to strengthen and tone your body and posture. Hopefully our
efforts will produce stronger bodies, more comfortable riding posture and safer experiences.

There was a production line that some Harley Davidson enthusiast’s are probably unaware of, but in 1963
when “Willie G” Davidson joined the company, Harley Davidson expanded into the production of 3-wheeled
golf carts, dubbed the “classic”. Later on in the 1970’s they added a four wheel version. Although too expensive for most individual golfers, many private country clubs purchased the 250cc gas powered golf carts because of their reputation for speed and power over hilly terrain. Harley Davidson also produced a line of
electric golf carts, but they fared poorly against the competing Yamaha Company. Harley Davidson controlled a third of the U.S. golf cart market by the end of that decade. Golf carts became a popular mode of
transportation not only on the golf course, but in manufacturing warehouses, airports, and use by security
personnel. In 1969 when Harley Davidson sold their company to American Machine and Foundry Company
(AMF), AMF continued production until they sold the golf cart division to Columbia Par Car in 1982. Locating an operational “classic” Harley Davidson golf cart today may be very difficult, but there are few still
around and prize possessions to H-D collectors.

Hello,
Since our last meeting the California State Rally rolled into town, thanks again to the 32 people who volunteered to help
make the event run smoothly. We also had some great rides of our own, going to Rainbow Oaks, Café 67, and a nice long ride without a restaurant stop. We had our last dinner ride of the year, going to Mario’s De La Mesa for some great Mexican food. Unfortunately our Brown Bag Ride got rained out, but we will get it back on the calendar soon.
The next month is going to bring plenty of opportunities for you to ride or just hang out with your HOG family.
In the morning (Saturday October 23rd) we will be heading to Palm Springs for an overnighter. With about 50 of us going
it should be a great time.
On Wednesday November 10th we have a social gathering planned at The Hungry Stick pool hall on Clairemont Mesa
BLVD. Come join us for food, pool, darts and laughter. We will set a start time of 6 PM, but get there when you can, we will be
there for a while.
On Veteran’s Day, Thursday November 11th we will be riding in the San Diego County Veteran’s Day Parade. Email me at
[email protected] if you want to join us for the parade.
Coffee and CoffeeMate will be leading us on the Thanksgiving Scrabble Run November 14th, if you have never been on a
scrabble run it is a great alternative to a poker run that will help raise money for our designated charity, St. Vincent De Paul Villages.
Then on November 20th we are heading north to Buena Park again, this time for a trip to Knott’s Berry Farm. The park
shows their support for Veteran’s by allowing all veteran’s to get in the park free, and they can bring a guest in with them. They
can get up to 6 additional tickets for only $15 a piece. If you want to join us for that ride please email me at [email protected], please indicate if you are a veteran and if you are willing to purchase additional tickets for other
HOG members. Kimberly has come through for us again getting discounted rates at the same hotel we stayed at for the Pirate’s
Run, contact her if you want a room for the night.
Even with all of the things planned I know some of you have other great ideas, tell us about them and we will try to make
them happen. As always, if you are willing we can use your help to make to plan and organize Chapter events.
Ride safe and have fun,
Dave R.
