The following lots (180-210) are from the estate of the late (Arthur) Graham Reynolds 1914-2013. Reynolds was a renowned art
historian who lived near Bury St Edmunds until his recent death. Educated at Queen’s College, Cambridge, he joined the Victoria and
Albert Museum in 1937 and was promoted to Keeper of Paintings (1959-74) and of the Department of Prints and Drawings (1961-74).
On the outbreak of WWII, V&A staff (as civil servants) became part of ‘the Treasury pool’ and Reynolds was allocated to the London
Civil Defence Region, with a key role to play in air attacks and in case of invasion. It was during this period that he met his future wife
Daphne Dent.
Reynolds was very aware of current artistic trends and began collecting contemporary art in the late 1930s. In the late 1960s Reynolds,
now keeper of his department at the V&A, set a precedent by staging exhibitions of living artists, first Stanley William Hayter and then
Anthony Gross. Gross became a great friend and later helped Daphne Reynolds to develop mezzotints, which she went on to exhibit in
Paris and London. Reynolds was the Honorary Keeper of Portrait Miniatures at the Fitzwilliam Museum since 1994, and in his capacity
as portrait miniature expert, Reynolds verified the Samuel Cooper which this auction house sold for £23,000 last year.
His publications include English Portrait Miniatures (1952), Catalogue of the Constable Collection, Victoria and Albert Museum (1960),
Victorian Painting (1966, second edition 1987).
