A sincere thank you to all of our supporters who helped make 2013 another fruitful year for the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. All of your donations, time given as
a volunteer, and efforts made to coordinate successful events is truly appreciated. Because of you, the foundation continues to make strides in raising awareness,
providing support and education, and awarding more research funding.
2013 involved a lot of internal work building towards future success as we head into our 20th year! Aside from developing our new logo and tagline, there has
been a tremendous amount of work to transition to a new donor and event management system which will go live in the first half of 2014. With these system
changes will also come a facelift to our website in an effort to get you to the information you need more easily.
Our monthly interactive webinars continue to be a great educational tool, connecting our members worldwide and bringing them up to date medical information
and advancements from top doctors in the field. Our support groups have grown in numbers and have developed a stronger sense of commitment to the
patients they serve. A doctor from China generously donated his time by translating our educational brain aneurysm treatment booklet into two versions of
Chinese. We were fortunate through the collaboration of a few to have a mobile application developed both for Apple and Android devices. We are excited to
share that our revenue from events run by generous volunteer supporters increased by 22 percent!
So once again, a big thank you to YOU, for supporting the mission of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. YOU are with us every step of the way as we continue
to Raise Awareness and End Fear. With your continued dedication and donations of time, talent, and money, our journey in the fight against the devastation
caused by brain aneurysms will be impactful.
I look forward to the achievements WE will make together in 2014 as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the foundation.

It has been such a pleasure to see The Brain Aneurysm Foundation continue to grow in number of members and in support. The BAF demonstrated continued
growth financially as well as in many awareness and fundraising activities due to the support of so many of you. A total of $880,000 of research has been funded
since the inception of the grant program in 2007. In 2013 the largest amount of funding to date, $205,000, was distributed to ten different research projects
selected through a very competitive process. This funding is crucial to help contined efforts to identify and treat unruptured aneurysms as well as aneurysmal
subarachnoid hemorrhage and its associated complications, such as vasospasm and stroke. In addition to the increased funding efforts for research, the foundation
raised $985,000 of funding. Undoubtedly, these funds will be a valuable resource in the foundation’s mission of raising worldwide awareness and education of
brain aneurysms. To that end, the BAF became a registered charity in Canada with other countries expressing interest in becoming involved.
2013 was a year with continued development and implementation of efforts to raise awareness for the public as well as healthcare professionals. Via Primed,
the foundation again supported a continuing medical education (CME) lecture aimed at primary care professionals to help them better understand the signs,
symptoms, and proper screening for brain aneurysms. This lecture was delivered in Baltimore, MD to over 500 attendees. Our hope is to continue to provide
similar lectures in different cities each year. The Medical Advisory Board continued to grow in numbers and talent with members joining from across the
United States and Canada.
On behalf of the Medical Advisory Board, I congratulate you for all your efforts in 2013. I thank you for your continued support of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation
and your commitment to pursuing research, education, and awareness and support for patients and families of this often devastating disease. I am hopeful 2014

The foundation has no endowment; every dollar we raise is deployed to
advance research to reduce the incidence of brain aneurysm ruptures,
to create wider awareness of brain aneurysms, to provide support
for those affected by brain aneurysms, and to educate patients, their

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation awards research grants for basic scientific research
directed at early detection, improved treatment modalities, and technological
advances that will ultimately improve outcomes for patients with brain aneurysms. The
foundation’s Research Grant Committee is headed by Robert Rosenwasser, MD, FACS,
Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
He, along with three other members of the Medical Advisory Board, scores all grant
applications to determine the grant recipients based on the highest scores.
The 2013 research grant recipients include:
Ricardo A. Peña Silva, M.D., University of Iowa. Dr. Peña Silva was awarded the North Shore
University Hopsital, Brain Aneurysm Center Chair of Research, a $25,000 grant to fund his
research - Impact of Angiotensin 1-7 on cerebral aneurysm inflammation and rupture.
Kamil W. Nowicki, M.D., University of Florida. Dr. Nowicki was awarded the Shirley Dudek
Demmer Chair of Research, a $25,000 grant to fund his research - Role of Peroxisome ProliferatorActivated Receptor (PPAR) agonists in preventing aneurysm formation and rupture.
Justin Caplan, M.D., Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Caplan was awarded the Timothy P. Susco Chair
of Research, a $25,000 grant to fund his research - Haptoglobin phenotype and clinical outcomes
in patients with intracranial cerebral aneurysms.
Chanannait Paisansathan, M.D., University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Paisansathan was awarded
the Maine’s Kimberly Tudor and Karolina Kurka Chair of Research, a $25,000 grant to fund her
research - The Activation of S100 B / RAGE Pathway Mediates Subarachnoid HemorrhageAssociated Vasospasm and Delayed Neurological Deficit.
Josephine D’Abbondanza, MSc, St. Michael’s Hospital. Ms. D’Abbondanza was awarded the
Step for Hope Chair of Research, a $25,000 grant to fund her research - Genetic Determinants
of Susceptibility to Complications of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.
Yunxia Tao, Ph.D., Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Dr. Tao was awarded the
Cynthia Lynn Sherwin Chair of Research, a $25,000 grant to fund her research - Pilot Study:
Evaluate the Potential of using PKD1 Expression and Function Level as a Risk Marker for
Intracranial Aneurysm Rupture.
Michael McDowell, M.D., Columbia University. Dr. McDowell was awarded the Christopher C. Getch
Chair of Research sponsored by the CV Section, a $15,000 grant to fund his research - Assessment
of Aneurysm Rupture Risk: Candidate Susceptibility Genes for Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and
Morphological Parameters.
Ciaran James Powers, M.D., The Ohio State University. Dr. Powers was awarded the Robert
Simon Chair of Research, a $15,000 grant to fund his research - Micro RNA Profiling of
Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.
Teresa Santiago Sim, Ph.D., University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Sim was
awarded the Dawn Brejcha Chair of Research, a $15,000 grant to fund her research - Investigating
the Function of THSD1, a Novel Intracranial Aneurysm Susceptibility Gene.
Kendall Van Keuren-Jensen, Ph.D., The Translational Genomics Research Institute.

to fund her research - Creation of a miRNA Panel for Detection of Patient outcome after

Awareness and Education
Back on Capitol Hill - Lobbying for Brain Aneurysm Awareness
On May 21, 2013, the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, members of our Board of Directors
and our Medical Advisory Board, survivors and family members who have lost loved
ones to brain aneurysms from all over the U.S. came together in Washington, D.C., for the
second year in a row to meet with members of Congress to advocate for brain aneurysm
awareness, research and early detection. Fifty advocates from fifteen states attended
seventy scheduled meetings with both Senators and Members of the House
of Representatives to discuss the importance of brain aneurysm awareness and ask
for their support as the Brain Aneurysm Foundation prepares to have new resolutions
sponsored and introduced under the 113th U.S. Congress. The states represented were:
MA, NY, TX, MD, DE, VA, KS, PA, OH, IL, IN, WA, NJ, GA and NE. Our goal is to establish
September as National Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month by passing new resolutions
in the Senate and House with the current Congress. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation is
establishing a Governmental Affairs Committee to keep working on this very important
initiative throughout the year. Your advocacy through our online petition encourages your
Members of Congress to vote to support brain aneurysm awareness. The Representatives
we met with were touched by the personal stories shared of the devastating emotional
and financial impact brain aneurysms have on individual families and were interested in
understanding the greater economic impact of this disease as well.
Continuing Medical Education Initiative
On December 5 , 2013, in Baltimore, Maryland, the lecture
developed by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation focused
on the importance of early detection via proper diagnosis
and screening, as well as treatment options was delivered
for the second time to a full audience of primary care
physicians and nurses. The lecture is CME/CMU accredited.
It was delivered by Rafael Jesus Tamargo, M.D., Professor of
Neurological Surgery, Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and
Neck Surgery; and, Walter E. Dandy Professor of Neurosurgery,
Director, Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery, Neurosurgical Co-Director,
Neurosciences Critical Care Unit, Professor of Neurosurgery ViceChairman, Department of Neurosurgery The Johns Hopkins Hospital,
and Medical Advisory Board Member of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
The lecture was both well attended and well received by the medical
professionals in attendance at the conference. The Brain Aneurysm
Foundation would like to thank Covidien and Aesculap, Inc. for providing
an educational grant in support of this program.

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation has announced the release of its new mobile application “Brain Aneurysm” for use on Apple and Android devices. The free app, now available for
download on iTunes and Google Play, is designed to provide the general public with useful information about brain aneurysms, whenever and wherever they may need it.
The Brain Aneurysm App was created in conjunction with The Neurosurgical Atlas and Dr. Aaron Cohen-Gadol, a leading neurosurgeon from Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine

Virtual Library of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation Webinars
The Brain Aneurysm Foundation live webinars have used the power of the Internet to create
a webinar forum where patients can reach experts to discuss important details of their care,
and most importantly, have the ability to ask questions while they are at home, at no cost. The
BAF webinars have been very successful in reaching the above mentioned goals to satisfy
the mission of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Dr. Aaron Cohen-Gadol, an aneurysm surgeon
and a member of the BAF Medical Advisory Board, has been moderating these webinars. We
continue to receive very positive feedback from our members who attend these webinars from
all over the world. These webinars are archived and are available for viewing shortly after the
presentation of the live webinar on the BAF website. In 2013 we created a patient library of
“Cerebral Vascular Webinars” and a new physician library of “Cerebral Vascular Webinars” to
provide greater accessibility of these excellent resources.

This new application is an innovative way to increase awareness and educate individuals about brain aneurysms. The app features
educational videos about aneurysms, treatment and recovery and patient advocacy. The app also provides access to a variety of
blogs about brain aneurysms, discussion groups, upcoming events and fundraisers and much more.
Educational Booklets Available in Three Languages
Over 25,000 educational pamphlets for brain aneurysm treatment options and recovery were distributed across the country
and internationally, to medical facilities treating brain aneurysms, as well as our 60 support groups. The booklets are available
in English, Spanish and Chinese. The Chinese translation was provided by: Qiyong Mei, M.D. of Shanghai and proofing by
Rose Du, MD., Ph.D. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation would like to thank Codman Neurovascular and Covidien for providing
the funding for the production of our new patient educational booklets.

Support Services
The Brain Aneurysm Foundation eases the diagnosis, procedural and recovery process for survivors and families by providing
phone support, email support, support groups, our main website, and our support website.
The online support website at www.bafsupport.org was initially launched by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation in 2010. In 2013 membership has increased 47% and
now has over 5,400 members, all affected by brain aneurysms either as survivors or family members.

their life. The goal of support group
meetings is to help alleviate fears and
concerns through education and group
discussions facilitated by a medical
professional. Survivors realize that they

support to those that are in need. There
are now close to 60 support groups

ME, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, IN, WI, IL,
MN, MI, OH, MO, KS, TN, GA, FL, LA, AL,
