Design and Development Report iMovie ‘09 Samantha Spendlove, Kathryn Hopkins, & Mitch Grimes 1. Comments on Revisions Since Analysis Report a. Changed Step 2 from “Import Video” to “Locate Video Clips” and changed substeps accordingly to be more clear b. Changed “Launch iMovie” (originally Step 1.1) to be a sub-step of “Locate Video Clips” for better sequencing 2. Learning Objectives a. See objectives column in chart 3. Sample Assessment a. Music & Fix Sound vi.Voiceovers f. Chapter 5: Review & Export (step 10) 5. Pre-instructional Activities a. Motivation—we will write a paragraph starting something like, “Welcome to (insert title), your tool for creating videos for personal use!” The introduction will explain some of the neat things the learners will be able to do with iMovie to get them excited. b. Inform of terminal objective—our terminal objectives are the same as our learner objectives. The learners will be learning the material in their homes with their own video clips, which is exactly what they will use their knowledge for in the future. Therefore, in our introduction chapter we will present the terminal and learner objectives as the same thing. c. Entry behaviors—we will have a statement in the introduction telling learners they must already know how to use a Mac, and if they donʼt they should familiarize themselves with that first. 6. Content Presentation: Information/Examples a. See instructional material below (chapters 1-3 are completed, the rest are in progress) 2 7. Practice/Feedback a. See instructional material below 8. Teaching the Terminal Objective a. Using a Mac, iMovie, and provided video clips, the learner will create a movie that is at least 30 seconds long and includes all of the effects steps presented in the instruction. Upon completion of the instruction, learners should be able to use the functions of iMovie for personal use. The strategy for instruction includes learners going through steps, completing activities that allow them to practice the intended skills, and then using the skills to create a video product. 9. Pre/Post-tests a. Pre-test: We have not included a pre-test in our instruction because our entry skills and ultimate instructional goals are so defined; there is not really any gray area. Learners are described as Mac users, which is self-explanatory, and should not have prior knowledge of iMovie. It would not make sense to see what they already know about iMovie, because they are not required to have any knowledge of it to begin the instruction. b. Post-test: See page 35 10. Reflections: Kathryn: I felt this phase of the process was very complicated and took us a long time. However, now that it is done I am very happy because it will make the final draft composition much easier to complete. There are a lot of details included in this phase, and Iʼm pretty sure we got them all. I feel our instruction will be very clear, especially because of the great visual aids. Iʼm glad we decided to have learners use our video instead of their own. This will simplify our instruction and ability to give feedback. Sam: After finishing portions of our design and development report, we took what we had and had Dr. Kin look over it. She brought up some issues that we were unaware of. For example, she pointed out the difference between practice items and assessment items, which we initially did not recognize. Also, as we went through the sequencing portion of the report, we found some inconsistency that would confuse learners who are participating in our instruction, so we moved some things around. We have become very familiar with the components of our project, and have been working well together as a group. Mitch: This is the part of the project I have enjoyed the most. I feel like we have finally rolled up our sleeves and gotten into the composition of the instructional material I like this process of explaining how to do things in a clear and interesting way. I also like the layout design aspects of the project that we have started to see with this latest phase. I have a great group and we are working well together. 3 Objective Chart Step Objec)ve Assessment 1 Familiarize self with iMovie Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie The objec6ve is necessary for following instruc6on, but not for mastery of skill. 1.1 Iden6fy iMovie Windows Performance: Be able to iden6fy (label) all iMovie windows and indicate (select from a list) their func6ons Criteria: worksheet completed correctly 2-‐Locate Video Clips Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie 2.1 Launch iMovie Performance: Be able select “iPhoto Videos” from the event library. 2.2 Select “iPhoto Videos” Criteria: AQer selec6ng “iPhoto Videos,” clips will appear in the event browser 3-‐Add Video Clips 3.1 Select Clip 3.2 Adjust Selec6on 3.3 Place Clip 3.4 Reposi6on Clip 3.5 Adjust Clip 4-‐Add Photos 4.1 Click on Camera Icon 4.2 Select “iPhoto” 4.3 Select and Place Photo 4.4 Reposi6on Photo Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie Performance: Be able to add (select, adjust selec6on, place, reposi6on) video clips to a movie and adjust video clips in a movie Checklist: ___ “iPhoto Videos” is selected ___ Video clips appear in event browser Checklist: ___video clips are arranged in specified order in the project window ___video clips are the specified lengths Criteria: Successful comple6on of this objec6ve requires that specific clips (provided) are added to the project window, arranged in the specified order, and adjusted to the specified lengths Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie Checklist: ___photo is in specified Performance: Be able to add (select, place, posi6on in project window reposi6on) photos to a movie and make ___photo is specified length adjustments to photos in a movie Criteria: Successfully 4.5 Adjust Photo 5-‐Add Transi6ons Checklist: ___specified transi6ons are in 5.1 Click on Transi6on Icon Performance: Be able to add (select, place, specified posi6ons 5.2 Select and Place Transi6on reposi6on) transi6ons to a movie 5.3 Reposi6on Transi6on Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie Criteria: Successfully 4 Objective Chart Step Objec)ve 6-‐Add Titles Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie 6.1 Click on T Icon 6.2 Select Title 6.3 Place Title 6.4 Reposi6on Title Assessment Checklist: ___specified 6tle is in Performance: Be able to add (select, place specified posi6on in project reposi6on) 6tles to a movie and adjust window 6tles in a movie ___6tle is specified length Criteria: Successfully 6.5 Adjust Title 7-‐Add Music 7.1 Click on Music Icon 7.2 Select Album/Folder 7.3 Select Music 7.4 Place Music Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie Checklist: ___specified music added to Performance: Be able to add (select, place, project window reposi6on) music to a movie and adjust ___music adjusted as the music volume in a movie specified Criteria: Successfully 7.5 Reposi6on Music 7.6 Adjust Music Volume 8-‐Review and Export 8.1 Review Full Screen 8.2 Click on Share Condi6on: Using a Mac and iMovie Performance: Be able to export a movie Criteria: Successfully 8.3 Click on Export Movie 8.4 Name and Save Movie 8.5 Choose Size and Export 5 Checklist: ___video is successfully reviewed in full-‐screen mode ___video is exported with specified se`ngs to specified loca6on Instructional Material 6 Welcome to this print-based iMovie tutorial! Once launched, you should recognize the iMovie layout from your work on the previous objective. First, direct your attention to the the event library, where you will see a list of your computerʼs hard drives and folders that contain video clips. Items in the list indicate the location that the clips are stored on your computer. By selecting different items in the list, you will see various groups of video clips appear in the event browser. For this instruction you will click on “iPhoto Videos.” k c cli he re Videos that are stored on your computer in iPhoto automatically appear in the iMovie event browser when you select “iPhoto Videos” from the list. Practice: 1.# Launch iMovie (launching applications is implied in entry skill of operating Mac OS, so no specific instruction is required) 2.# From the list of items in the event library, select “iPhoto Videos” (your videos that are stored in iPhoto will automatically appear in the iMovie event browser). If you have selected correctly, iPhoto videos will appear as clips in the iMovie event browser (as pictured above). # # If so, great job! Continue on to objective 3 (page 15). ! ! If not, review objective 2 and try again. 14 Objective 3: Using a Mac and iMovie be able to add (select, adjust selection, place, reposition) video clips to a movie and adjust video clips in a movie. Successful completion of this objective requires that specific clips (provided) are added to the project window, arranged in the specified order, and adjusted to the specified lengths. 15 Video clips are selected and arranged simply by clicking on and dragging and dropping the clip to the desired location in the project window. You begin by clicking on a video clip in the event browser. l se ec ta cl i p By default when you click on a clip, 4 seconds of video is selected. You can adjust the length of the selection by clicking on and dragging the left or right ends of the yellow selection box to the desired position. ag dr cli p he re Once you are satisfied with your selection, click on the middle of the selection and drag the selection to the project window. A vertical green line indicates where the clip will be inserted. Clips can be repositioned in the project window by dragging and dropping. 16 iMovie allows you to readjust a clipʼs length after you have dragged it to the project window. As you hover your cursor over the clip in the project window, an icon appears in the lower left corner. cl ick he re If you click on this icon (it looks like a gear) a drop down list of advanced options appears. Click on “Clip Trimmer.” The clip trimmer will be displayed. click on le ft or righ t en ds to adju st You will see your selection highlighted in yellow with the the rest of the video clip appearing darker. You can now readjust the clipʼs length using the same process as was used in the event browser. Click “Done” when you have finished adjusting the clip. 17 Practice: 1.# Using the supplied video clips practice adding clips to the project window, arranging clips within the project window, and adjusting clip length as follows: • • • • • 1st clip- street (4 seconds) 2nd clip- house (3 seconds) 3rd clip- wreath (2 seconds) 4th clip- bird houses (6 seconds) 5th clip- flamingos (5 seconds) The specified clips should now be visible in the project window, should be the correct length and should be arranged in the correct order (as pictured above). # # If so, great job! Continue on to objective 4 (page 19). ! ! If not, review objective 3 and try again. 18 Objective 4: Using a Mac and iMovie be able to add (select, place, reposition) photos to a movie and make adjustments to photos in a movie successfully. 19 Photos from the iPhoto library on your Mac are made available by clicking on the photos icon of the media browser. cli e kh re c Photos appear here Make sure “iPhoto” is selected in the media browser. Any photos in your iPhoto library will appear below the grey line as shown above. dr ag ph ot o he re Photos are selected and added to the project simply by clicking on and dragging and dropping the photo to the desired location in the project window. Photos can be repositioned in the project window by dragging and dropping. 20 To adjust the length of your photos, double-click the photoʼs thumbnail image from the project window. Once you have double-clicked, a pop-up window will appear. This is called the inspector and it displays information about your photo. do le ub -cl h ick oo et pe o np up p- er Notice the clip tab and the video tab at the top of this pop-up window. By selecting the clip tab, you will be able to adjust the length of the clip and add certain visual effects to your photo. The video tab will allow you to adjust exposure and other image attributes. click on le ft or righ t en ds to adju st It is also possible to shorten the length of the photo by directly clicking on the photoʼs thumbnail near the edge and dragging as you would for a video clip. 21 Practice: 1.# Using the supplied photo of the blue shark, practice adding a photo to the project window, arranging it so that it comes after the flamingos in the project window. 2.# Adjust the length of the photo to be 6 seconds. The photo of the blue shark should now be visible in the project window after the flamingos and should be 6 seconds in length (as pictured above). # # If so, great job! Continue on to objective 5 (page 23). ! ! There are many different styles to choose from and titles can be added as stand alone elements or superimposed over a video clip or image. t dra gt ran sit ion cl he h ick er e s fir re To add titles simply select and drag the desired style to the desired location in the project window. As usual, a vertical green line indicates the insert point. However, if a title is placed on top of a clip, a blue highlight over the clip indicates the insert point. If you add a title as a stand alone element (not on top of a clip) then a pop-up window opens and requires the selection of a background color or image. 28 A title is represented in the project window by a title box located above the clip or background it is superimposed on. Reposition titles by dragging and dropping the title box to the desired position in the project window. st k lic he re cli fir c i ed e tt h xt e er Once the title is in the desired position click on the title box. The text can now be edited in the project viewer by double-clicking on the text and then clicking “Done.” 29 c o kd ne Practice: 1.# Add the following “Centered” style title to the project window editing the text and positioning it as indicated: • The End (superimposed over blue shark) The specified title should now appear above the blue shark clip and the text should read: “The End” (as pictured above). # # If so, great job! Continue on to objective 7 (page 31). ! ! If not, review objective 6 and try again. 30 Objective 7: Using a Mac and iMovie be able to add (select, place, reposition) music to a movie and adjust the music volume in a movie successfully. 31 Adding music to an iMovie project is simple and can really enhance the movie. Access to music is made available by clicking the music icon of the media browser. After clicking the music icon, select “iLife Sound Effects” from the list. t cl sel h ick er e s fir ect Many sound files will appear in the media browser. By default the music is positioned to start at the beginning of the movie. ka lic nd ag dr c To reposition the sound file, click and drag on the green translucent area until the audio is in the desired position. To indicate repositioning, the green changes to purple. If you are unable reposition the music (the music might be longer then the total length of your video clips) the color will remain green. ta se first double-click u o di b ta c le ag cl a i ck nd dr Double-clicking on the now purple area opens the inspector pop-up. Volume controls are made available within the inspector pop-up by clicking the “Audio” tab. Volume is adjusted by clicking and dragging the volume slider to the desired level. 33 Practice: 1.# Add the following audio file to the project window: • Barbeque Blues Medium.caf volume = 75% 2.# Reposition audio file to align with end of blue shark clip. 3.# Adjust audio file volume to 75%. The specified audio file should now be visible in the project window, should be in the specified position and its volume adjusted to 75% (as pictured above). # # If so, great job! Continue on to objective 8 (page 35). ! ! If not, review objective 7 and try again. 34 Objective 8: Using a Mac and iMovie be able export a movie successfully. 35 iMovie makes it is possible to review a movie in full-screen mode. It is a good idea to do this before exporting incase you missed an error in editing that was undetectable in the small project viewer window. cl h i ck e er To play back a movie in full-screen mode, click on the full-screen playback icon in the lower left corner of the iMovie window. After you have reviewed a movie and found no errors, iMovie makes it easy to export the movie in a variety of file sizes. c cli kh e re fir st sel ect To export a movie, click “Share” at the very top of the screen and select “Export Movie.” 36 After clicking “Export Movie,” the export dialogue box opens. Within the export dialogue box are settings for the file name, save location, and file size. The dialogue box also contains a useful chart that offers guidance as to what file size should be selected based on the intended end use of a movie. ie ov e m m na save location select large cl h ick e er la st After entering a name, selecting a save location, and choosing a file size click on “Export” to begin the export process. Depending on the complexity and length of a movie, the export process could take less then a minute or be significantly longer. Once a movie is finished exporting it is ready for use. Locate the file on the desktop and double-click the file to open it and begin playback. 37 Practice: 1.# Export with the following file name, location, and size: • • • Export As: Demo Project Where: Desktop Size to Export: Large lick do e -c ubl pe to o le n fi 2.# The export process should take less then 5 minutes. 3.# Locate the movie on the desktop and double-click on it to playback the file. The movie should playback completely and without error, and should match the movie called Demo Project Key. If so, great job! Congrats on successfully creating a movie using iMovie. Continue on to the final objective (page 39). ! ! If not, review the movie and export settings. Try again. 38 Final Objective: Using a Mac, iMovie, and provided media, create a movie that is at least 30 seconds long and includes all of the effects steps reviewed in this tutorial. Use the iMovie Post Test (page 40) as a checklist as you complete this objective. 39 iMovie Post-Test Using your own video files, photos, music, etc., create your own iMovie video.
