A Letter From The President
Dear Family and Friends,
I hope you enjoyed a very happy and healthy 2013. Looking back on the past year, I am so grateful for the many gifts
of time, expertise, leadership and financial resources that our Melmark supporters have provided and the impact
these gifts have made on the lives of the children and adults we serve. It is equally important to note that together
we were able to help families, strengthen the talents of our staff, foster collaborations with other professionals in the
field and build stronger communities. We should all be very proud of our partnership and the many achievements
realized.
In 2013, we were able to tackle a variety of capital projects resulting in significant upgrades of residential and program
facilities. The implementation of advanced technologies was possible and helped us make tremendous strides in our
ability to provide a specialized and interactive curriculum for the children’s educational program. We incorporated
a wide array of training and educational tools for our staff, strengthening their efforts across all disciplines. We purchased rehabilitation and
medical equipment needed to help those we serve to overcome the challenges they face each day.
Melmark also enjoyed a number of successful special events throughout the year, attracting many new corporate partners and sustaining long
term relationships. Our volunteer force is stronger than ever, offering a variety of services throughout the year which have a direct impact on
the lives of those entrusted to our care. In addition, Melmark’s Board of Directors is always behind our efforts, providing their many gifts of
guidance, expertise and financial resources to underpin our mission and our continual strive for excellence.
The list of donors, types of support and results achieved is long. As you read this Donor Report, you will learn more about the number of
accomplishments that have been possible with your support and investment. I hope you will take great pride in knowing what a difference you
have made in so many lives.

A Message From The Chairman
Dear Family and Friends,
As this Donor Report marks the closing of another chapter in the Melmark book of accomplishments, it also
ushers in a new one. Each and every day, Melmark’s dedicated leadership, staff, volunteers, Board of Directors,
and especially the donors, provide hope and support to hundreds of children and adults and their families. I am
always humbled and inspired by the care and compassion that I witness at Melmark. It is my great fortune to be a
part of the extraordinary team that embraces such wonderful individuals and their families, who work so hard to
overcome their challenges.
There is always much to reflect on while we look forward to fulfilling our support and love to everyone we serve.
This past year, once again, demonstrated the generous and steadfast commitment of our many supporters and was
nothing short of remarkable. Philanthropy, in all its forms, is vital to the strength and well-being of Melmark and
over the last year, opportunities for creativity, growth and innovation were expanded. This has been demonstrated through advancements in
service and treatment delivery, improvements to programs and residential facilities, generating and sharing knowledge and best practices, both
internally and externally, and providing unrestricted support on a daily basis.

The Numbers
As we look back at 2013, we are amazed at the number of accomplishments that were realized, and most of them with help from our
supporters. As you read through this report, we hope you will share the joy in all that has been possible.
It is true that many of our important accomplishments cannot easily be quantified. There are no numbers that can measure the smile
on a child’s face when making eye contact for the first time, the pride of a young adult getting their first job, or the joy the Melmark
Players experience when taking a bow on stage.
And yet, numbers can be a very good way to communicate the impact of Melmark’s programs and services. In 2013, the numbers tell
the story.
About the Cover: A Number of Accomplishments!
Success at Melmark is measured differently for each student and adult we serve. On the cover of this donor report, you see four students who work hard each and every day to
reach their individual goals and to strive towards independence. Below is a sampling of their accomplishments since coming to Melmark.
Gordon
Reggie
Gordon’s speech therapists rave about his increased
communication and his ability to successfully use a Picture
Exchange Communication System (PECS). Gordon has a
cheerful personality, which blooms with enthusiasm when he
is able to clearly communicate with those around him.
When Reggie came to Melmark, she was exclusively tube
fed. Now she has mastered eating a variety of food items and
averages 52 bites of food per day. Upon admission, she could
only walk an average of 40 feet at a time. After working with
Melmark Physical Therapists, she can now walk 150 feet and
stands independently up to 26 minutes per day.
Ian
Alyssa
Ian has advanced beautifully during his education at The
Melmark School. One of his main challenges upon admission
was his unwillingness to exit the building, whether for a simple
trip to the playground or for a potentially life-saving fire drill.
He is now near 100% success with this skill. His work skills
have also greatly improved, and we are thrilled that Ian will be
returning to his school district for the 2014-2015 school year.
Upon admission, Alyssa required a staff alongside her at all
times. Now that her level of supervision has decreased to five
minute check-ins, she can independently transition between
programs. Her vocabulary has also flourished at The Melmark
School. Alyssa also enjoys swimming on the Melmark Special
Olympics Team and loves to play baseball. She is well on her
way to living a more independent adulthood.

Creating Moments On and Off the Field
Melmark is pleased to announce that the Phillies Charities gave a $7,500 grant to
the Melmark Charitable Foundation in December 2013. The grant will be used to
support the Mustangs Baseball Team and the Special Olympics Program at
Melmark.
Physical education and therapeutic recreational programs facilitate motor
development, improve strength and endurance, and increase independence and
participation in school and residential programs.
The Philadelphia Phillies continue to provide countless opportunities to the
children and adults served at Melmark. Just this summer, The Phillies extended an
invitation to The Joybells, Melmark’s handbell choir, to perform before a sold out
crowd at Citizens Bank Ball Park. We are grateful to The Phillies for their ongoing
support.

The number of ways the Boston Red Sox
supported Melmark in 2013
The Boston Red Sox are longtime friends of Melmark. This past year,
the team donated many game tickets for staff and students at Melmark
New England. They also supported the fore Melmark New England
Golf Tournament with a sponsorship and donated auction items for
that event and others. The Red Sox hosted MNE at a Fenway Park
event, and Wally the mascot visited The MNE School.

The Boston Red Sox became the World Champions again in 2013, but for years,
they have always been champions to Melmark New England. The Boston Red Sox
organization has supported MNE in numerous ways, from the generous financial
support they extend every year to the annual golf tournament to offering game
tickets to our students and staff.
This relationship has grown to where the World Series Champions make our
students and staff feel like the winners and heroes that they are.

Providing Training Opportunities
In December 2013, the Hoxie Harrison Smith Foundation awarded
Melmark a $10,000 grant in support of the purchase and implementation of NetLearning, an online training library. The foundation’s grant
will be used towards the training needs of our direct care staff, ensuring they will have the most current and effective training to provide
the very best care for the individuals we serve. This online training
tool will allow staff the flexibility to complete training at any time
throughout the day and without interruption of service.

SAP Fall Festival
In the fall of 2013, nearly two dozen volunteers from
SAP North America, headquartered in Newtown
Square, Pennsylvania, participated in a fall festival for
children and adults at Melmark’s Berwyn campus.
The festival featured an inflatable moon bounce, rock slide and sports games such as
a basketball toss, baseball pitch and golf chip. There was even a hayride throughout
the Melmark community. Each activity was designed to ensure access to people of
all ability levels and provided a safe, fun day of play for all ages.
While several SAP volunteers staffed the games, others rolled up their sleeves
to help get the Meadows Garden ready for winter. Volunteers from SAP worked
alongside members of the Country Garden Guild to remove dead plants, rake
leaves and spread mulch. Melmark is thrilled to have such a beautiful partnership
with SAP.

Since 2011, Stoneham Cosmetic Dentist has been a devoted partner and generous
friend to Melmark New England. Not only is Dr. Diane Bonanni an enthusiastic
parent, she supports the school in many ways - both personally and through her
dental practice. She provides vocational experiences for our students, contributes gifts
in kind to special events and also finds time to volunteer and attend events and parent
gatherings. We are grateful for the continued support she offers, which benefits MNE
students in a number of ways.

The Paul and Mildred Krentel Legacy Society
The Paul and Mildred Krentel Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have made provision in their estates for future gifts in support of Melmark, thus creating their own legacy
that will ensure the organization’s excellence beyond its first 100 years. We are grateful for those who have identified their plans to ensure a legacy at Melmark.
The Schoemaker Legacy
Unlike people, a legacy lives forever. The late Hubert J.P. Schoemaker, Melmark parent, Melmark Board
member, and Melmark philanthropist clearly personified the ideals of living a legacy. It has been more
than eight years since Hubert’s passing, and yet his Melmark heritage lives on through the facilities and
programs he championed, the leadership he provided, and his generous support.
In his lifetime, Hubert and his wife, Anne Faulkner Schoemaker, were devoted to the organization that
provided care for Hubert’s daughter, Maureen, affectionately known as “Beanie.” She was a resident of
Melmark for 28 years until her passing in 2010. During that time, Anne and Hubert provided the funds
for the complete renovation of the Pines, a campus residence now known as the Schoemaker House.
Their generosity and forward thinking took a campus house that had a complex and clinical-looking
environment, and turned it into a beautiful home that would provide all the necessary care to Melmark’s
most fragile residents. From 1993 to his death, Hubert served on the Board and provided valuable
guidance through a challenging transition period for the organization.
“When I came to Melmark 17 years ago, it was a time of substantial administrative and financial change,”
said Joanne Gillis-Donovan. “Hubert was a source of unremitting support throughout the new growth
process. I cannot imagine having gone through it successfully without him.” She added that his presence
on the Board created an infusion of optimism, energy and ideas, and that he radiated personal respect,
encouragement and excitement about the work of Melmark.
After his death in 2006, Anne took on Hubert’s place of leadership
on the Melmark Board. She did this until 2010 when she was
named Vice Chair of the newly organized Melmark Charitable
Foundation, where she served until 2012.
“I am the carrier of Hubert’s torch,” said Anne. “His commitment
to Melmark is a standard to which we all should aspire.” When
Melmark initiated the Paul and Mildred Krentel Legacy Society in
2010, Anne became a Charter Member of the Society, establishing
a future gift to the organization through her will, thus preserving
her and Hubert’s legacy in perpetuity.
“I am merely carrying on Hubert’s vision for Melmark,” Anne said,
“and I am happy that there will be a significant part of Hubert and
me that will work to sustain and enrich this organization that has
been a home and a family to so many wonderful children and
adults, like our Beanie.”

Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Classic for Melmark
On Monday, October 7, 2013, the Philadelphia life sciences and business community gathered for the Eighth Annual Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Classic
to benefit Melmark with Title Sponsor, Accenture. The event included a day of golf at three premier courses, Waynesborough Country Club, St. Davids
Golf Club and Gulph Mills Golf Club. Golf was followed by a cocktail reception, silent auction and dinner with a live auction at Waynesborough.

This year, we were honored to welcome new Classic Advisory Board Members, Armando Anido and Conrad J. Radcliffe. The 2013 tournament also
welcomed media sponsor, KYWNewsradio. Founded in 2006, by Lee Ahrensdorf, President of Ahrensdorf and Associates, the Schoemaker Classic has
become the major charity event for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
The Classic is held in memory of the late Hubert J.P. Schoemaker, a leader and advocate in the region’s life sciences community and founder of
Centocor. The $308,000 raised by the 2013 Classic brings the tournament’s eight year total to nearly $3 million, all of which directly impacts the
children and adults at Melmark.

The 8th annual fore Melmark New England Golf Benefit for Children with Autism was another amazing day of golf, fundraising and
friendships.
Over 160 golfers and sponsors attended the event, held at Andover Country Club. Participants also had the opportunity to participate in
raffles, a helicopter golf ball drop, skills contests and silent and live auctions for their chance to win cash and prizes.
The day was highlighted by a visit from and the live singing of Rene Rancourt (Boston Bruins national anthem singer). Rene posed for
photos, sang songs and placed the Stanley Cup ring on the fingers of every Boston Bruins fan there. The golf tournament was kicked off with his lofty rendition of the Star Spangled
Banner.
A big thank you to all who supported this special event with donations, volunteerism, dinner attendance, auction support – and to those who participated in the helicopter golf ball drop.
We look forward to seeing you on July 28, 2014 for the 9th annual event!
