of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad
spectrum of quality entertainment and education
programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity
of the region; foster understanding and

cultural enrichment for people at all economic
levels. It also is our mission to develop and
maintain a world-class venue that enhances the
enjoyment of these entertainment and education
programs; contributes to the cultural and
economic vitality of the community and the
region; and honors the memory of Count Basie.

JULY 9 – The 2010-11 year began with one
of the first performances anywhere by the
Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band.
Pictured greeting Derek Tucks and Susan
Tedeschi are (far left) William Marraccini,
of the theatre’s Board of Trustees, and
Russell Clark (far right).
The restoration of the theatre’s exterior and
façade was completed during the first half
of fiscal 2011. Begun in March, protective
scaffolding shrouded the theatre’s façade
through November while the work was
conducted.
The $2 million “Let’s Face It” project included a completely new exterior brick and stone
wall facing Monmouth Street. The only original material left on the façade of the building
are the stone Griffins that sit atop the peak
of the façade.
The project included new digital signs, which
sit within a brand new marquee designed to
more closely resemble the historic marquee
pictured in this photo from the late 1940’s.
AUGUST 2 – Filmmaker and Red Bank native
Kevin Smith celebrated his 40th birthday at
the Count Basie Theatre with an evening of
audience Q&A. The event was filmed for TV.
The evening included a life-sized bust
of Kevin created in cake by the Cake Boss,
Buddy Valastro, of Carlo’s Bakery in
Hoboken. Buddy has also appeared live
at the Basie.
AUGUST 14 – Guitarist Will Ackerman, a
friend of Marketing Director Diana St. John,
performed a benefit concert for the theatre’s
restoration fund, and spoke about the founding of the record label he owns, Windham Hill
Records. The Two River Theater provided the
intimate setting for this special event.
AUGUST 24 – The Count Basie Theatre’s
Performing Arts Academy ended its
summer term with a showcase featuring
performances by its students. Enrollment
in the Performing Arts Academy reached
record numbers in fiscal 2011.
SEPTEMBER 23 - Theatre CEO Numa Saisselin
accepted Preservation NJ’s Vision Award for the
preservation and restoration of the Basie, “A community and regional landmark.” Also honored were
Evergreene Architectural Arts, and Rambusch
Studios, two firms whose work includes the
Basie’s restoration.
SEPTEMBER 23 – The annual Golf Outing
to benefit the theatre’s operations was held
at Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic
Highlands. Pictured having a laugh is Dave
Callahan.
Pictured concentrating on a putt to benefit
the Basie is Todd Axt. The Golf Outing raised
$39,000 to benefit the theatre.
On September 25 at Sandy Hook, Bike for
the Basie raised $9,000 to benefit the theatre.
The morning of family fun began with a
yoga class.
OCTOBER 17 – The Count Basie Theatre
Foundation presented a concert to benefit
the theatre’s capital restoration fund with the
Black Crowes. Pictured greeting the band are
supporters Tom and Karen Hyland. $146,000
was raised.
Also pictured with the Black Crowes are
Christine and Paul Valestin.
OCTOBER 29 – The Monmouth County Arts
Council honored Basie board member and
actress Siobhan Fallon Hogan at their 2010
Gala, and asked Basie CEO Numa Saisselin to
present the award. Pictured left-right are
Siobhan, Numa and Katherine Scott, a Red
Bank Catholic High School senior who performed a monologue honoring Siobhan.
OCTOBER 29 – the Basie provided a helping
hand to Best Buddies, an international organization dedicated to creating opportunities for
people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. A dedicated group of volunteers,
including Fran Luisi and Mary Rawlinson,
pictured here, seek to form a NJ chapter.
