TIOGA COUNTY, NEW YORK Voted Best Travel Guide in New York State: 2004 River Country VISITOR’S GUIDE www.visittioga.com Photo by Elaine & Mike Lovegreen www.visittioga.com • 800-671-7772 “Rivers must have been the guides which conducted the footsteps of the first travelers. They are the constant lure, when they flow by our doors, to distant enterprise and adventure…” Henry David Thoreau Kayaking the Owego Creek Photo by Deena Haner i Welcome www.visittioga.com • 800-671-7772 I n Tioga County, New York, we don’t make bold claims such as “We’ve got it all,” or “We’ve got just what you’re looking for.” We don’t have the deepest, the widest or the largest, but we do have some of the most unique. From river paddling to riverside dining, scenic dinner trains to scenic golf courses, quaint gift shops to cozy B&B’s, experience a land built on rural charm and character. You’ll discover peaceful river pleasures, unspoiled natural beauty and hometown hospitality. Take the kids on a variety of exotic farm tours or feel the excitement of motocross or stock car racing. We invite you to “Experience Tioga,” your passage to the Finger Lakes region, and all that our past, present and future have to offer.” Table of Contents FOR QUICK REFERENCE, REFER TO COLOR CODES AT TOP OF EACH PAGE 1 History . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2-3 Heritage & Cultural Attractions . . . . . .4-5 Family Fun & Recreation . . . . . . . . . .6-7 Trails/Camping . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .8-9 River & Creek Recreation . . . . . . . .10-11 Hunting/Preserves . . . . . . . . . . . . .12-13 B&B’s/Hotels/Packages . . . . . . . . .14-15 Dining/Groups & Gatherings . . . . . .16-17 Shopping . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .18-19 Farm Tours/Markets/U-Picks . . . . . .20-21 Golfing . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .22 State Forests/Preserves/Parks . . . . . . .23 Events & Festivals . . . . . . . . . . . . .24-25 Helpful Information . . . . . . . . . . . . . .27 How to Find Us/Maps/Car Rentals . .28-29 www.visittioga.com • 800-671-7772 “To the north of the village (of Owego) and about half a mile from the river, there is a bold ‘headland’ that rises to the height of four or five hundred feet, jutting into the valley, its slopes facing the south and west, upon the latter of which is situated EVERGREEN CEMETERY. This headland forms the northern and northeastern boundaries of the village. The river, flowing from the east, makes a beautiful curve at the eastern border of the village. By a road along the south face of the headland, as well as by the road to the cemetery, easy access is had to the top; and standing upon this bold elevation, there is to be had a view extending for miles up and down the river, and over the valley extending northward, of remarkable beauty and diversity.” (Historical Gazeteer and Directory of Tioga County, 1887, W.B. Gay) “When you put your hand in a flowing stream, you touch the last that has gone before and the first of what is still to come.” CIVIL WAR SECTION OF EVERGREEN CEMETERY Leonardo da Vinci A prominent feature of Evergreen Cemetery is the Civil War section at the western end of Broad Avenue. This portion, set aside for the burial of the army and navy of the Civil War dead by the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) features an impressive arrangement of four commemorative canons and a number of interesting limestone monuments. A few of them have stone relief’s, including one topped with a crossed gun and sword. SA-SA-NA LOFT MONUMENT At the highest point in Evergreen Cemetery overlooking the village of Owego and the Susquehanna River, a 17’ obelisk stands to mark the grave of Sa-Sa-Na Loft, a Mohawk Indian maiden, and a direct descendant of Thayendanegea, also known as Joseph Brant, a Mohawk leader during the Revolutionary War. She came to Owego in 1852 with her brother and sister and presented two singing concerts, the proceeds of which were to go for translating the Bible into the Mohawk language. Two days after leaving Owego, she was tragically killed in a train accident at Deposit, NY. The people of Owego were so sympathetic that they asked her family for permission and were granted the honor of making their village her final home. The words on the front of the stone read, “In memory of Sa-Sa-Na Loft, an Indian maiden of the Mohawk woods, Canada West, who lost her life in the railroad disaster at Deposit, NY, February 18, 1852, age 21 years.” Carved on the reverse side is a single wild rose with its stem broken and a leaf missing. The west side reads, “By birth a daughter of the forest; by adoption, a child of God.” Civil War Section, Evergreen Cemetery Photo by Jim Mullen 2 History www.visittioga.com • 800-671-7772 F ormed in 1791, Tioga County is New York’s twentieth county, made up of nine towns and six villages. The name is Iroquois, meaning "at the forks" referring to the juncture of the Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers at Tioga Point, near Athens, PA. By the time of the American Colonial period, the Cayuga and Onondaga tribes of the Iroquois nation were settled in Tioga County. Near the end of the Revolutionary War, in August 1779, the armies of Generals Sullivan and Clinton burned the small Indian village at Owego as they made their way west. This was also an opportunity for the soldiers to see the rich farmland already planted with corn and fruit trees. Some returned with their families, mostly from New England and Pennsylvania to make Tioga County their new home. At first, the main highway was the Susquehanna River. The first industries were lumber and farming. Huge rafts were constructed, loaded with all kinds of goods and poled down to ports in Pennsylvania as far as the Chesapeake Bay. Later, roads were developed and the trains came through. In 1828 the Ithaca & Owego Railroad, the second railroad in New York State was chartered. Large steamboats were built in the Village of Owego that traveled as far east as Binghamton and south, to Pennsylvania. As the transportation system improved, businesses from pianos to peanut factories flourished throughout the county. Many notable people were born and/or lived here, including philanthropist John D. Rockefeller and Benjamin F. Tracy, Secretary of the Navy in President Harrison’s cabinet. Although the Susquehanna River is no longer the main highway, the main highways through Tioga County now follow along side of it. Lumber and farming still play significant roles; but as of the 1950s, high technology became our most important business when IBM moved to Owego and helped to send men into outer space. Today Lockheed Martin Systems Integration employees have the distinction and honor of being the primary contractor for the production of the Marine One presidential helicopter fleet. Elements of Tioga County history can still be seen in all of our towns and villages. The natural beauty of the hills with the large old-growth trees and the creeks full of trout, the historic homes and the treasured cemeteries all contrast with today’s modern technology industry plants. Yet, one of the county’s most natural resources is the ambience created by the warmth of its people. 3 www.visittioga.com • 800-671-7772 “To the lost man, to the pioneer penetrating a new country, to the naturalist who wishes to see the wild land at its wildest, the advice is always the same – follow a river. The river is the original forest highway. It is nature’s own Wilderness Road.” Edwin Way Teale Bement-Billings Spring Festival, Newark Valley Photo by Robert Zelle 4 Heritage & Cultural Attractions www.visittioga.com • 800-671-7772 TI-AHWAGA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER PO Box 102, 42 Delphine St, Owego, NY 13827 607-687-2130 www.tiahwaga.com [email protected] 150 seat cabaret style theatre. The river and her tributaries, Catatonk and Owego Creeks, boasts some of the most beautiful and varied fish habitat you will ever encounter. The river is generally broad and shallow with widths of 250-1,000 feet and depths ranging from boat-dragging shallow to 30 feet or more. Anglers should note that the river is also subject to flooding and in high water can be a dangerous and unproductive fishing trip. HOT SPOT: If there’s one spot that’s popular with all species and the fishermen trying to catch them, It’s between Hiawatha Island and Owego. Smallmouth bass and Tiger muskies up to 20 lbs. live there. East Branch Owego Creek: From Bridge Street to Ballou Road, and going north from Payne Road to the Cortland County line. West Branch Owego Creek: From Brigham Road to 1/2 mile below Jenksville Cross Road. WALLEYE are scattered in the deep pools around Hiawatha Island and at Big Bend off the state ramp in Nichols. There are also nice pools of good habitat near Barton. Fall walleye fishing is exceptionally good in the slack water between Owego and Hiawatha Island. There are some who claim the walleye angling is some of the best in the state. MUSKIES are found in the deepest pools around sunken trees and structures in the river and near Hiawatha Island, Big Bend, Nichols, the pools at Barton and south. Pan Fish are abundant throughout the river. There is also another less-sought-after-prize: the Channel Catfish that inhabit the deepest pools of the river. The bass are distributed evenly in the river, but there are some really big ones between Smithboro and Barton as well as Owego and Hiawatha Island. TROUT WATERS Cold water species are found predominantly in the Cayuta Creek, Catatonk Creek, the East Branch, West Branch and main-stem of the Owego Creek. SeptemberMarch 15 is the best cold water fishing. Of these five creeks, East Branch Owego Creek is the best for wild trout stocks, especially at the north end, north of the village of Richford. Stocking of brown trout takes place from the Cortland-Tioga county line south to Berkshire. It is the largest island in the Susquehanna River within New York State. Waterman Center also owns 15 acres of riparian woodlands on the mainland. These two parcels comprise the Hiawatha Island Riverfront Park Complex. The island is home to hundreds of flora and fauna species, including several listed on the state endangered species listing. Remnants of a hotel and farm buildings are visible on the island. Access to the island is from the western end of Marshland Road in Apalachin. A pontoon boat provides access from the mainland to the island for special tours and events. River & Creek Recreation www.visittioga.com • 800-671-7772 Boat Access Sites Water Access Map There are six places where you will gain boat access to the best holes. Although New York does not require blaze orange hunting gear for turkey hunting, it is a safety precaution to wear the hat.
