1956 Ford Big Window
Truck Headliner
The 1953-`56 Ford Trucks originally
came with a cardboard headliner
held in place with a rubber headliner-to-roof seal. To say that it was ugly
is an understatement. If you had the
truck painted in any light color and
were using a light colored headliner
material you were gifted with a big
black rubber strip from the back of
the door up and around and over the
windshield – pure ugly.

Modular Armrests can be used with any type of door paneling (cardboard or plywood door skins). Each armrest has an integral
mounting flange. Simply cut a hole in the panel the shape of the armrest, use glue or pop rivets to attach the flange. Armrest

HOW TO INSTALL MODULAR ARMRESTS
There are three quick and easy steps to getting good
looking, inexpensive and lightweight armrests on your
doors. Each armrest comes with a 3/4” flange. The flange
allows you to attach the armrest to the door panel with
screws or by gluing.

window to the top of the armrest is 9-12 inches. Use this as a
starting point and then adjust the position to suit yourself.
Step Two:
Install the door pull into the armrest. The pull attaches to the
door with a metal bracket so that at no time are you pulling
on the armrest or the door panel to close the door.
HINT: Our armrests are hollow so they will accommodate
installing switches for power windows.

This most important step is to locate the armrest on the
door in the best position for you. This can be determined
either by approximating the final seat height with a milk
crate and a few telephone books or by having the seat in
the car. As a general rule, the height from the bottom of the

the armrest does not interfere with the design on the door
panel. Draw an outline of the armrest on the panel with a

marker by tracing around the flange portion of the armrest.
Then draw a parallel line 1/2” inside the outline. Then score
the inner line with a utility knife, break out the plastic from
the panel and test for fit by inserting the armrest through
the hole from the back of the panel.
HINT: The hole you make should be a little tight to the
armrest, so carefully carve out the hole until the armrest
fits with one of two recommend gap dimensions — 1/4”
or 1/8”. Make it 1/4” if you are going to glue the armrest
into the door panel and then cover it integrally with the
door panel.
Make the gap 1/8” if you’re going to cover the armrest
separately from the door panel. Be sure to glue the fabric
down over the flange portion, too. If you need more space
to clear your fabric, carve out the hole a little more.

When covering the armrest in RodFoam we recommend that you should have NO GAP with the RodFoam
over the armrest and before covering the armrest. This
will provide a clean Sharpe detail once the armrest is
inserted into the panel. Then use our carpet clips to
attach the armrest from the back of the panel; or, for a
more secure method -- screw the armrest directly to the
door, slip the armrest through the hole in the panel and
attach the door panel as normally directed.

Most were a twist on these models.
An example of this is the 1939 Cadillac. The ‘38-’48 Sedan Style Armrest best resembled what was originally in
the rear, only the armrest extended into the door area, requiring the armrest to have a back and no flange in that
open door area. Again, this is easily adapted by gluing
scrap plastic onto the part of the armrest that extends
into the doorway with ABS pipe cement, and cutting off
the unnecessary flange with a utility knife.

In our quest to help you create the hot rod interior of your

carpet as the background element, and a somewhat
abstract representation of a bench seat with inserts as

There are sixteen swatches in the book representing the
most popular color combinations we see at the many rod
shows we attend every year.

Much has been written about the theory of color and
how it impacts people. Much could also be discussed
about fabric types and textures. But we won’t attempt
that kind of talk here.
If your car is already painted, go with a combo you see,
or use the swatches to help you identify another color
combination that will work best for your car.
If your car isn’t painted, review the “Interior Before Paint’”
article on the inside back page of this catalog before
deciding on your ideal interior color scheme. Then pick a
paint color to work with it. In either case, we think you’ll

TIP
S
TRIMMING
We’ve seen people use skill saws, saber saws, hand saws,
and die grinders on our plastic panels. But, nothing
works better than a simple, sharp utility knife. Chalk out
a line, score with your utility knife and snap like wallboard
to break. All the plastic parts that we sell will sand like
wood, drill like wood, and break like tile. So trimming out
a panel is a snap.
MISTAKES
The biggest fear that most people have is that they’ll
make a mistake. Not a big deal. If you trim a panel too
small you can always glue it back together with ABS
pipe cement. Add a backer plate from scrap so the joint
is not just a butt joint. Once the repair has dried you can
sand it smooth, retrim and the fabric will cover over the
repaired seam.
But always remember our Motto, “Call twice, cut once”
If you can dream it up, we want you to get there. Call us
anytime if you need help making your idea a reality.
EXTRA DETAIL
Any panel can have extra detailing add onto it in
several ways.
DESIGN OR NO DESIGN
Some builders are quite content with our preformed
designs. Others have their own ideas and designs. For
those builders we offer Flat Stock and RodFoam. Flat
Stock offers the greatest freedom to go your own way.
A flat panel is a clean slate where the only limitation is
that thing between your shoulders.

One way is to cut scrap ABS plastic to the design you
want and glue it directly to any panel with ABS plastic
pipe cement. When the fabric is applied over the panel
the “design” will show through as another design element. This is in addition to what was originally on the
panel for an “Embossed” look. You could do this with

Another way to add extra detailing is to use our
RodFoam as shown on page 34. RodFoam is manufactured from the same high density closed cell foam
that professional upholsterers use, only we’ve added
an adhesive to the back to make installation faster
and quicker. Foam is used to soften a panels look.
Foam is used sparingly, on the tops of armrests or
anywhere that the arm may rest. Foam can also be
used to add that “extra” detail to a panel. Like with our
die cut emblems.

Panel will wash out the “design”.
Anywhere there is a panel break or line in the panel
you want to cut the foam 1/8”-1/4” away from that
line, that will prevent the RodFoam from washing out
the design. Prior to covering the panel will have a
“Guernsey Cow” like look, with lots of black and lots of
white on the panel.
Remember, when using RodFoam you don’t want to
cover the entire panel with foam. Covering the entire

HOW DO I FIT AN ARMREST?

PANELS?
44” x 32”. Each set contains two black ABS panels, right and
left, with the pattern centered in each panel. See detailed
diagram on page 2.
WHAT SIZE ARE THE PATTERNS?
23”, 30” & 36”. The designs are sized so you can trim the outside dimensions of the panel to fit your door without cutting into the design. See detailed diagrams on page 2.
Some panels have an integrated armrest, or you can add a
modular armrest (see page 5).
WHAT ABOUT MY REAR DOORS AND PANELS?
Several styles can be purchased in double sets for rear doors
or quarter panels. Reversing the panels in the rear allows the
design to flow through the car. The Healey above is a good
example. Also, see the examples on the bottom of page 19.
HOW DO I TRIM THE PANELS?
Use your old panels as a template or make a new template
from cardboard. Transfer the pattern to the new panel. Use

a sharp utility knife to score the trim line and then break off
the excess. Drill appropriate sized holes for door handles
and window cranks.
COVERING YOUR PANELS?
Oversize your material by 2”-3” all around the panel. Fold the
material in half, starting in the center or over the armrest.
Spray adhesive on a 2 sq. Ft. area of both the panel and
material, let it tack up. Then stretch the material over the
armrest and work your way up and down the panel. Once
you have the center down, work toward the outside edges in
strips 2 sq. Ft. at a time. Glue Cheese Hi-Temp spray adhesive
is recommended.

Included in each Trim-to-Fit Installation Kit is a roll of
self adhesive Foam Edge Tape. When applied flush
to the edge of the door on the back of the panel,
the Tape will fill in any gap that the Tabs holding
the panel off the door may have caused. Additional
benefits of this method is that should there be an
indentation in the door; instead of a gap we can
double up on the tape, before covering and fill in
any gaps.

The owner of this truck chose to use
our Flame ll Trim to Fit Panel. There was
enough extra Panel to cover the Kick
Panels also for a flow-thru design.
For this `28 Ford truck the owner chose to
use our Headliner and flat stock for door
panels and underdash cover. This is a
great install. Much time has been devoted
to customizing what we send in our kits
with foam to add that “Extra” dimension.
If you’ve watched our DVD you may recognize this cab as the one we used in the
background when we were filming. A two
birds one stone sort of thing, as we were
filming we were also making templates
so that the fit will be perfect.

For this truck the owner chose to use our “HUGO”
model. The armrest is already trimmed in the
panel. They also decided to use the contrasting
fabric on the insert panel. The headliner is available in a molded one piece ABS plastic panel that
saves time on installation and gives a cleaner
look and fit over the four piece “Lemon wedge’”
look original.
The “LUPE” model. With this model you can use
the original door pull in the armrest. The builder
went with power windows operated at the center
console for a real clean look. Two toning the
panel to match the seat is another simple but
clean way to go.

Here is an important item. The original
access plate on the `55-`59 Chevrolet
truck holds the door panel off the door
too far, so you’ve got to remove it to get
the door panel to fit flush to the door. But
this panel also covers the latch on the end
of the door. Sure you can just cut off the
panel if you like and use the end of the
access plate. Or you can use our Latch
Cover Plates. They fit better than originals,
are made from thicker material, and can
be easily chromed.

We’ve tried to help with these Pods,
mounted in the upper outside back corners of the cab. They are out of the way
and nearly out of site. These pods are
precut to fit directly to the cab contours
and mount with only a couple of screws.
Speaker wires are hidden between the
inner and outer cab sheet metal. More

This clean, finished look hides dangling
wires and gives you more area for mounting A/C vents, climate controls, ignition
switches, and light accessories.

The Underdash Cover is made of ABS
plastic in two sections, 16" wide on the
driver's side of the column and 44" wide
on the passenger's side.
Depth: 18" back from the dash to

Height: 6" front lip that can be

WON’T THE UNDERDASH COVER CUT OFF THE
RETURN AIR FOR THE AC?
Only 15 sq. Inches of opening is required to give you AC
unit all the air it can cool/heat. When trimming for fit the
underdash is first fit snug against the bottom of the dash,
kick panels, and firewall. Then decide where to find the
required air gap. We like to leaves a 1/2” gap along the back
against the firewall. It doesn’t have to be one opening, it
can be several. You could also drill 2” holes across the back
for a “Salt Flats” look. We’ve even seen louvers used, let you
imagination be your guide.

MY AC UNIT HANGS DOWN TOO FAR?
Sometimes there is just no room to completely seal or
disguise the AC unit. In that case we work with the unit.
Letting the Underdash drop as far down as possible to
try and cover as much of the AC unit as possible. Cut the
Underdash around and up to the AC cover. Once the
underdash is covered mark the area on the AC unit that
will be exposed and cover that area with material.

WHAT IF I DON’T USE THE HIDE-A-VENTS?
No each unit is designed to be used either together
or independently. An example is if you were using a
Chrome Steering Column we do not recommend a
Column Cover. The same thing if you wanted to use
only the Steering Column Cover.

would meet. Mark that line and score and
break the panels apart.
Block sand the edges smooth and cover

block sand the panel till you have an

Carpeting on the bottom of a panel is
similar. Only we staggering the Carpet
Clips across the panels, so that the difference in thickness between the fabric and
carpet is split between the panels.
Remember that because of the thickness
of the carpet you’ll also want to remove
1/4” off the base panel that will be covered with carpet, not along the break
line, but on the outside edges. Otherwise

If you have a coupe, just pick a panel design you like.
But if you have a sedan, this seems to throw people off.
The worry is that it won’t all work for some unspecific
reason.
The reality is that many of our panels are specifically
designed for rear quarter/rear doors. In the two pictures to the left we show how a bunch of high school
students installed “The Healey” panels on their shop
built `37 Woody. They chose to upgrade the look by using the precut inserts as templates for real maple wood
insert. WOW!

Here’s a neat trick. Two “The Bobeck” panels are glued
together to form a cool headliner panel with the design
already formed in. This is a twist on traditional techniques for fabricating hard formed headliners. After the
headliner center panel is trimmed to size, side panels
are cut out of flat stock for around the cars interior.

the norm and the cause of many a

“Take two pods, install them in the
morning and you’ll be listening to

HOW TO CHOOSE WHICH
POD?
For sound without an ugly speaker grill, we’ve developed
a quick template kit. Just mark the holes., drill through the
plastic panel, cover as directed and punch thru the fabric
from the back side. When the panel is installed only the
small holes in the panel are visible.
Choosing the right pod may seem daunting, but it’s
really quite simple.
The kit includes templates for one 8" round speaker and
one 6" x 9" speaker, a 3/16" punch and instructions.
RD4070 Speaker Templates

This is to accommodate the various sizes.
Flush Mount means that there is No room behind the
pod to allow the magnet of the speaker to recess into an
open pocket area behind the panel.
Recessed Mount means that the panel behind the
pod is open and you CAN recess the speaker magnet into
that open area. For a less raised speaker mount.
A common example would be If we’re mounting a 6-1/2”
speaker in a kick panel of a ‘47-72 Chevrolet Truck. Unless
we’re willing to cut the sheet metal in the kick panel area
you’re going to need a 6” Flush mount Speaker Pod.
The same thing goes for ‘56 Ford Truck. The Kick Panel
area is open behind the panel and you can use a 5” Recessed Mount Speaker Pod to mount a 5-1/2” speaker
and allow the speaker magnet to recess into that open
area behind the kick panel.
4,5, OR 6” Speaker Pod? We offer different sizes
for different speakers. The face is oversized for each size of
speaker . A 6” Speaker Pod has a 7” face, the 5” Speaker has
a 6” face, and the 4” Speaker Pod has a 5” face.

guide is to help you through the process and help make
sure you don’t end up with unexpected surprises($)!
Here’s a check list to help you make sure you’re ready
for upholstery:

where needed for courtesy lights, third brake lights, power
seats & door locks, door contacts, power antenna and power
windows. Extra wire length left for shrinkage in
final assembly?
8 AC/heating units installed and working. Defroster ducts
mounted and finished, including vents.
9 Wiper motors installed, wired and working.
10 Power windows and door locks purchased, installed, wired
and working.
11 All glass and weather strips installed.
12 Radio/CD-tape units test fitted and working. If possible, they
should be mounted.
13 Gas tank and filler neck sealed to prevent leakage in the shop.
There easily can be more. Make your list and check it
(twice)! Not overlooking something will save you money,
time and grief!
Remember...

so make one!
“Interior before Paint”
means trimming the panels
and getting them through
all those “ins and outs” of
fitting to the vehicle.
Now you're ready to paint
and you've lessened the
chance of scratching a
new high-buck paint job.
Plus if you need to weld
on any special brackets,
now is the time. After paint
it's too late.

can do it!
