A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS
In our already busy lives, many of us in the
spring and summer seasons tend to pack
even more into our schedules. We plan
our vacations and picnics. We venture
out more to reconnect with family and
friends now that the days are longer and
we don’t have to worry about a snowstorm
complicating our travel plans.
Tania S. Anderson
Chief Executive Officer
ARISE has a full calendar of special events.
Our third annual Celebrating Inclusion and
Achieving Independence dinner took place
on April 20. It was a wonderful opportunity
to celebrate the achievements of Leola
Rodgers and Nienke Dosa and celebrate
milestone anniversaries for our operations
in Oswego County and our ARISE & Ski
program. More importantly, it was a chance
for all of us to reconnect and celebrate the
work ARISE does every day to ensure that
every person, regardless of disability, can
live a full and independent life. Thank you
to everyone who supported this important
celebration.
Coming up on June 4 is the annual Ride
for Ramps at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego.
This motorcycle ride, 5K run and good-old
fashioned BBQ is always fun and supports
2
ARISE’s work in providing dozens of ramps
to families in Oswego County. We will
ride bicycles instead of motorcycles and
kids will have fun on the track doing the
Walk & Wheel-a-Thon on July 23 at the
ARISE and Ride at the Farm event. This
family-friendly day supports our inclusive
recreation programs at ARISE at the Farm
in Chittenango. Finally, we celebrate art
on August 18 with the opening night of our
exhibit of UNIQUE Magazine’s visual and
literary pieces at the Everson Museum in
Syracuse.
I encourage you to pencil any and all of
these events in your packed summer
schedules. I also encourage you to take a
break from the busyness, take a breath and
bask in the beauty of this season. For me,
that break comes when I drive my daughter
to the Farm where we can soak up the
simple joys of green grass, gentle horses
and caring folks. I hope you can discover
those joys and many others through ARISE
this season.
a fond farewell
ARISE Says Goodbye to Two Special People
In July of 2002, a new executive director took over
at ARISE. Tom McKeown led the organization until
his retirement on March 31. Over the course of
those 14 years, ARISE grew in significant ways. The
Independent Living Center for Onondaga and Oswego
counties, ARISE expanded and became a more regional
presence, serving Madison, Cayuga, and Seneca
counties.
Eleanor Michaels also retired on March 31 after 42
years of touching lives. Eleanor joined the staff of Child
& Family Service, Inc. in November of 1973. Among
the services provided by the agency were adoption
and mental health. Hired as the receptionist, Eleanor
soon took on the role of program assistant. Over the
year, the organization grew, moved offices, and added
satellite sites.
ARISE’s programs and services grew as well, and so
did the size of the staff. Ask any of our employees
about Tom, and they are sure to have a story to share.
Tom was always available to everyone, whether it was
a person connecting with us for services, a volunteer, or
an employee.
When Child & Family Service merged with ARISE in
1999, Eleanor became an ARISE staff member. As
part of the Mental Health Department, she conducted
intakes and assisted people who connected with the
clinic. Since the merger, Eleanor was the contact
person for people who called for information about
adoptions.
Tom’s commitment to the Independent Living
Philosophy, and person-centered services, guided
everything he did. His vision and commitment made
many terrific things happen. We are grateful to Tom for
his dedication and wish him all the best in this next part
of his journey.
We applaud Eleanor for her tremendous work ethic,
commitment to the people we serve, and dedication to
her colleagues. We will miss her and wish her health
and happiness.

party in March.

CELEBRATING INCLUSION & ACHIEVING INDEPENDENCE
3rd Annual Dinner Honors Nienke Dosa and Leola Rodgers
Two extraordinary honorees, a dynamic keynote speaker, a gifted master of ceremonies, and friends from
across the region came together to celebrate inclusion, access, and independence at our annual dinner event.
We were thrilled to honor Dr. Nienke Dosa, a developmental pediatrician, for her commitment to
her patients and their families. Dr. Dosa encourages families to focus not on medical conditions
but on lives that involve being artistic, athletic, theatrical, musical, and more. She is active in many
innovative fitness and inclusion efforts locally, nationally, and beyond.
Ms. Leola Rodgers is President & CEO of Syracuse Community Health Center. She worked
previously at Upstate Hospital and has spent more than 25 years working to ensure that everyone
has access to the best possible care, including mental health care. While at Upstate, Ms. Rodgers
was instrumental in partnering with ARISE to place one of our therapists in the Pediatric and
Adolescent Clinic.
Megan Coleman, news anchor at CNY Central, once again expertly performed the role of master of
ceremonies. ARISE Foundation Vice Chair Kim Brown once again served as a terrific auctioneer for our live
auction. We are so grateful to AAA of Western & Central New York for their donation of a Disney vacation
package! Thanks also to Michelle & Mark Alletzhauser and Marianne & Matt DiNiro for donating stays at their
vacation homes.
Dr. Anjali Forber-Pratt, a Paralympian medalist and faculty member at Vanderbilt University, delivered a
powerful keynote address. She shared her experiences in fighting for access in her high school and her
athletic accomplishments. Dr. Forber-Pratt quoted a high school English teacher who asked her, “Why are you
in Honors English, you won’t be going to college.” The collective gasp by members of the audience highlights
that we still have a long way to go in our work to change attitudes. Her personal philosophy: Dream. Drive. Do.
fits perfectly with the ARISE mission.
We hope you’ll plan to join us on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, for our fourth annual dinner event.
For more information on underwriting opportunities for the 2017 Dinner or other ARISE special events, please contact
Nancy Kern Eaton at 671-2903 or [email protected].

Saying goodbye
BrandiLee and Dan Schafran are the proud parents of three
wonderful boys. Their oldest son, Gavin, has cerebral palsy
and started taking riding lessons at ARISE at the Farm when
he was three. He has benefitted greatly from therapeutic
riding. When Gavin wanted to ski, Dan tuned up his skills so
that he could volunteer with ARISE & Ski and be part of the
fun.
We were thrilled when both BrandiLee and Dan agreed to
serve on the ARISE Foundation Board of Directors. When we
wanted to build a playground at the Farm, BrandiLee and Dan
shared our dream and were instrumental in making it a reality.
BrandiLee and Dan are now making their family’s dream
come true as they move to Tennessee. We are so grateful to
them for everything they have done, and we send them off
with love and wishes for a wonderful future.

celebrating frankie
Seeing Frankie Barney ride at ARISE at the Farm was like
watching the definition of joy. Frankie loved the horses and
being at the Farm. He was one of the kids who participated
in our first 21-Day Challenge in 2012, making tremendous
progress and loving every minute of it.
Frankie also enjoyed skiing and flying down the slopes with
ARISE & Ski.
And we all loved Frankie. His mom, dad, sister, and his
constant companion and brother, Hunter, made sure that
Frankie was able to take part in all kinds of great experiences.
They never let his disabilities prevent him from being active.
News of Frankie’s death was devastating. He was
unforgettable and he touched many lives. We were moved
when Frankie’s family asked that contributions in his memory
be made to ARISE at the Farm. Frankie’s legacy continues
through those gifts. He will never be forgotten.

what arise is
New Videos Share What ARISE Means to Those Connected to Us
As an organization that serves
people of all ages with all types
of disabilities, it can be hard to
tell our story. At our Celebrating
Inclusion and Achieving
Independence Dinner event
every year, we debut a new
video hoping to convey some of
ARISE’s impact.
Thanks to Janelle Fields, a
member of our Marketing
Committee, we connected
with the talented folks at
Congruent Media. These gifted
professionals know how to tell
stories in compelling ways, and
we were delighted when they
agreed to work with us.
We hoped to highlight the
five areas that encompass
our services: Advocacy and
Accessibility; Basic Needs
and Assistance; Education,
Employment and Skill-Building;
Health and Wellness; and
Recreation and Art.
We selected five individuals to
feature and the creative minds
at Congruent went to work.
Over the course of a week, they
spent time with each person
at their home or work, doing
interviews and learning about
their connections with ARISE.
AJ is a member of the ARISE
Foundation Board. He is an
executive with Enterprise
Holdings Company and has
hired people with disabilities
through our Employment
Department. AJ is impressed by
the highly qualified people we
have referred to him.
Donna first came into contact
with ARISE when she was
looking for a job in Oswego.
She knew what she wanted to
do and we helped her make it
happen. She recently celebrated
her 14th anniversary in her
position. This past fall, Donna
wanted to fulfill her dream of
living on her own. We helped
her get an apartment. Donna
loves her home and the busy life
she has made there.
Jim is the Exalted Ruler of the
Oswego Elks Club. He heard
about people in Oswego waiting
for ramps and mobilized his
members to volunteer with our
Oswego Ramp Program.
Katie is Director of Special
Education at Lyncourt School
and created a partnership with
ARISE to provide mental health
screenings and services for their
students. She has seen the kids
develop the skills they need to
be successful now and in the
future.
Rachel participates in our ARISE
& Ski program and rides at
ARISE at the Farm. She loves
being able to participate in
athletic activities and has never
let challenges stand in her way.
Congruent Media took their
stories and created five amazing
videos that are hosted on a
brand new site they developed
for us: #ARISEis. By going to
this site, you can watch each of
these outstanding videos and
meet people who tell their story
– and ours – so powerfully.
Rachel’s video debuted at our
dinner event and the response
was overwhelming. We are
proud of these videos and the
people in them. They showcase
so well the importance of our
work to make it possible for all
people, regardless of disability,
to achieve their dreams. As
Rachel says in her video,
“ARISE is important because
it shows that with a little help,
anything is possible.”

Board of Directors
WHY I SUPPORT ARISE
Patricia Contant Clary, ARISE Foundation Board Member
Volunteering
became
important
to me after
I became
a widow
with three
daughters,
ages two,
four, and
six. Living in a place where I had
no family, I was amazed that people
I barely knew or didn’t know at all
stepped in to help us make it through.
At the time, one of those helpers told
me that someday I would be able to
feel joy, laugh, and experience a full
life again. She assured me that I
would then be able to do something to
make a difference for others.
I first learned about ARISE from my
employer, Haylor, Freyer & Coon, Inc.
Soon after that, I went to ARISE at the
Farm and immediately felt a strong
sense of connection. I will never
forget the smiles I saw on the faces of
the riders and everyone else. It gave
me an unbelievable feeling of joy, and
made me want to learn more. The
scope of ARISE’s work to promote
independent living, including inclusive
recreation, moved me to become
involved.
I love seeing what ARISE brings to
everyone – support, services, being
part of a community, and a focus on
abilities.
A person can live where he or she
wants to live because of ARISE. A
person can work where he or she
wants to work because of ARISE.
Whatever your ability, ARISE is there
to be part of someone’s journey
to make his or her own decisions
and choices. ARISE is about every
person living a full and joyful life as a
real part of their community.
The ARISE Foundation is building
financial security so that ARISE can
continue to do what it does so well.
We want to be sure that ARISE at
the Farm, ARISE & Ski, and all of the
services are available now and into
the future. I am happy to be able to
give back and proud to support work
that makes it possible for people to
have lives filled with joy, laughter and
choice. I am so honored to be part of
the Foundation Board that supports
this amazing organization.

WAYS TO TOUCH LIVES
If you’re looking for a way to give back, share your time, and make a difference, check out our
wonderful volunteer opportunities:
ARISE at the Farm
There are lots of ways to join us at the Farm! Individuals and groups can volunteer to help with lessons, work in the barn with
the horses, do landscaping, help with building repairs and maintenance, or come up with your own project. We’d love to have
you or your group/company share in making inclusive recreation possible for all!
Oswego Ramp Program
ARISE is the only option for people in Oswego County who need ramps but cannot afford them. With no government funding
for ramps, our Ramp & Home Modification program makes it possible for people to remain at home rather than be forced
to go into a nursing home. We partner with local companies and groups to raise the funds for materials and coordinate
volunteers to build the ramps. You can change someone’s life by donating funds and/or sharing your time to build a ramp.
Ombudsman Program
ARISE coordinates the Long-Term Care Ombudsman program in Onondaga, Cayuga, Cortland, and Oswego counties. By
becoming a trained volunteer Ombudsman, you can be an advocate for people in nursing homes and adult-care facilities who
may have no family to check on them. For as little as 90 minutes a week, you can make a significant difference in the lives of
folks in their later years.
ARISE & Ski
Thanks to tremendous support from Toggenburg Mountain Winter Sports Center, ARISE & Ski has been making it possible
for people with all types of disabilities to take part in winter sports since 1996. Skilled instructors and trained volunteers
teach participants how to ski and snowboard, sharing the thrill of flying down the slopes. The number of participants we can
accept into the program each year depends upon the number of volunteers we have sharing their time. If you love skiing or
snowboarding and want to share the experience with people wanting to learn, we’d love to have you join us!

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF ARISE & SKI
By: Michael Theobald
ARISE & Ski is the longest running
adaptive ski program in Central New
York. The program began at Toggenburg
Mountain in 1996, and has been growing
every year. The program provides people
with disabilities, no matter their age or
ability, with the proper equipment and
volunteer staff to assist them in skiing or snowboarding.
Like most adaptive equipment, the bi-ski was initially
created for disabled veterans returning after World War
II. Back then the adaptive skis were much different,
and they were normally at ski hills much bigger than
anything around Central New York. Most bi-skis now are
still intended for bigger hills because the ski takes some
adjustments to get on the lift, and then readjusted to go
down the hill.
Skiing can be expensive for anyone, but the costs of
skiing for someone with a disability can be in another
stratosphere, due to the adaptive equipment required.
ARISE & Ski provides all of the equipment needed for
participants. The relationships created during the program
can last far beyond the time in the program. Some
skiing participants and staff even go to events together
throughout the year.
The ARISE & Ski program’s mission statement states that
skiing should be available for everyone no matter their
ability. Skiing is a lot of fun for a person with disabilities
if they’re surrounded by the right people, and the right
people can be found at ARISE & Ski at Toggenburg.
