Kislev - Tevet 5773 12 Dec THE VOICE OF TEMPLE ISRAEL MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA Shabbat Service, Chanukah Celebration and Congregational Dinner Friday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m. • See page 5 for details A PUBLICATION OF TEMPLE ISRAEL 2324 Emerson Avenue South Minneapolis, MN 55405-2695 612-377-8680 e-mail: hakol@templeisrael.com www.templeisrael.com AFFILIATED WITH THE UNION FOR REFORM JUDAISM Clergy Voice Dear Friends, Rabbis Marcia A. Zimmerman Alvin & June Perlman Senior Rabbinic Chair Simeon I. Glaser Jennifer S. Gertman Cantor Barry Abelson Executive Director Miriam Seidenfeld BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Sherri Feuer Vice President Alan Silver At its core Chanukah is about miracles. In our Religious School we teach our students about the miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days. When the Maccabees recovered the Temple from the Romans, they found enough oil to light the sacred menorah Rabbi Gertman for only one day. Miraculously, it lasted for eight days, the amount of time needed to produce more oil. As we get older we learn about the battle that took place between the small Maccabee army and the large Syrian army. It was truly a miracle that such a small band of soldiers were able to defeat a large army. Every year we marvel at the miracles of Chanukah that enabled Judaism to continue. Should we be surprised? It seems that Judaism is a story of miracles. We are a people who time and again beat the odds, survive the destruction, and continue to thrive. Last month I had the opportunity to travel to Cuba. Theirs is a story of miracles. It is a miracle that the small community of 1,500 Jews decided to rebuild and relearn Judaism after being unable to observe Jewish ritual and practices for the last 30 years. Teenagers in Cuba are taking it upon themselves to learn the prayers and Torah readings in order to lead services for their community. They are an inspiration to us all. Treasurer Lennie Kaufman Immediate Past President Muffy Rudnick Roberta Bonoff Mark Chodosh Stephen Cohen Sandy Donaldson Jeff Forester Andy Gellman Stuart Goldenberg David Gollin Kim Greene Jeremy Hanson Willis Mindy Isaacs Steve Levie Susan Lewis Maggie Thurer We have also seen many miracles here in Minneapolis this year. We have much to be proud of – from the defeat of the marriage amendment to the way in which our community came together on Thanksgiving Day to feed so many. It is inspiring to me that on a day devoted to decadence so many of you give of your time to care for others. As you watch the Chanukah lights flicker, I hope that you will keep all of these miracles in mind, as well as those that have occurred in your own families. I pray that these will warm your hearts and souls as we confront the cold months ahead. May the lights be a reminder of the blessings that surround us each day. I wish you a Happy Chanukah filled with warmth, light and miracles. i: B’virkat Shalom –With Blessings of Peace, Rabbi Jennifer Gertman 2 h a k o l Printed on recycled paper with soy-based inks by Shapco Printing Chanukah at Home Chanukah Candle Blessing Place the candles in the menorah from right to left (oldest to newest). Post your favorite latke topping on our Facebook page and see what our clergy’s favorite toppings are. facebook.com/templeisraelmpls Potato Latkes Serves 5-6; about 18 latkes 6 medium potatoes, peeled and grated 1 onion, peeled and grated 2 eggs, slightly beaten 2 tablespoons matzo meal or flour (matzo meal works better) 1 teaspoon salt Vegetable oil for frying Toppings: See our Facebook page for topping ideas Squeeze out liquid from potatoes or drain in a colander a few minutes. Mix with the grated onion, eggs, matzo meal (or flour) and salt. Heat the oil in a frying pan, using enough to cover the latkes amply. Once the oil sizzles when a droplet of water is added, drop the batter from a tablespoon or other large spoon, making pancakes about 3 inches in diameter. Do not allow the oil to smoke, and heat it up again when you replenish the oil. Fry the underside of each pancake until golden brown, then turn and brown the other side. Remove when done. Drain on paper towels. Keep warm in the oven or on a hot plate until ready to eat. See our Facebook page for topping ideas, facebook.com/templeisraelmpls. DECEMBER ‘12 7 Lighting the Way Giving Back Janice & Leonard Kennen establish fund for babysitting at Temple Written by Janice Kennen Len, Jan and Rachiel Kennen Len and I started the Kellar Kennen Child Care Fund because we wanted to give back to Temple Israel. Our daughter, Rachiel, went to preschool, Religious School, Bat Mitzvah, Confirmation and a trip to Israel with the help of scholarships from Temple Israel. It was our time to try and return the generosity. Now that our congregation is attracting so many young families, we believe that babysitting services will be a valuable help to those who currently cannot attend worship services or Temple functions due to child care issues. Currently babysitting is offered periodically during Sunday programs. Starting this month, it will also be offered during the Nefesh Shabbat service on the third Friday of each month (see page 5 for details), and our hope is that this new fund will eventually provide the resources to expand babysitting even further. The Kellar Kennen Child Care Fund is named in the memories of our parents, Dorothy & Cletus Kellar and Irma & Bernard Kennen. We are delighted to support Temple and help young Temple families in this way. w ww.te m p l e i s r a e l . c o m God spoke to Moses saying: “Tell the Israelite people to bring me gifts; you shall accept gifts for me from every person whose heart so moves him.” – Exodus 15: 1-9 Leaving A Legacy “Light tomorrow with today!” – Elizabeth Barrett Browning A legacy gift is a way to take your love for Judaism, Jewish community and our congregation and make it last forever. It is a way to light our children’s lives for tomorrow with something concrete that you can do today. A legacy gift is a donation to the Te m p l e Israel Foundation in your estate plan so that after you are gone, your love for our heritage, people, culture, religion and community lives on. It is a way of meeting your personal financial goals while at the same time making a substantial contribution to Temple Israel. Legacy giving can be as easy as putting the Temple Israel Foundation in your will; making the Temple Israel Foundation a beneficiary of your IRA, other retirement plan or insurance policy; or setting up a charitable gift annuity or charitable trust. A professional advisor will help you make a contribution to Temple Israel that is t ail ore d to y our p ar ticular philanthropic interests, financial objectives and needs, while also providing you with practical tax and income benefits in the here and now. Your gift can have both longterm impact and provide opportunities to reduce your personal taxes. ••• Why make a Legacy Gift? • Achieve your personal philanthropic goals. • Have your family remembered. • Realize personal financial goals. • Reduce taxes. • Maximize or supplement your income. • Maximize the benefits to your estate and beneficiaries. • Support our Temple community and keep Judaism thriving for generations to come. ••• How to make a Legacy Gift to Temple Whether in your will, retirement plan, insurance policy or other estate gift, please use the Temple Israel Foundation for your beneficiary: Temple Israel Foundation, 2324 Emerson Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55405 Tax ID # 41-1769841 Contact Jeri Glick-Anderson, Temple’s Development Director, for more information and to let us know of your plans: 612-374-0302 or [email protected].
