Presidents report
Hi All,
Here is the 7th Screaming Reel,
and once again I need to thank
Beno for all of his hard work in
pulling this together.
I also need to thank everyone
that helped to pull the open day
together, as whilst the numbers
were down on previous years
there was still the same amount of
work, and we simply couldn’t have
made the day a success without the
massive help we had from the great
crew that came along on the day.
Importantly on the day, I also
had the privilege of being able to
present a life membership to a
very well deserving Jeff Cooper.
Jeff is a long term member,
previous committee member,
president, and a very strong
ongoing advocate of the Broome
Fishing Club. He is also one of the
IGFA reps for our area, and now
adds his name to our list of lifers.
Our club continues to grow from
strength to strength, and we
now have around 350 members,
which is a great achievement
and a strong indication that we
are doing something right. We
are already well beyond our total
membership numbers for last year,
and given the range of activities
that are planned for the rest of the
year I am confident that we will
continue to expand.
Our range of activities includes
the popular full moon sessions,
and we will shortly commence
some additional Sunday activities
including some fishing workshops
and a weekly members only draw.
The announcement for these will
take place shortly as we need to
iron out a couple of items, and get
a solid itinerary together. Keep an
eye on facebook and the email list
as more detail will arrive shortly.
In closing, I would encourage
you all to have a crack at the
Thready Shootout this year. There
are massive numbers of fish out
there, as even I have been able to
land a couple lately, and if you are
coming down this Friday night
please let us know as there are a
set number of meals available and
we don’t want anyone missing out.
Committee
Correspondance
Yet again we’ve had a massive
couple of months. We are still
working away at sorting out our
online membership system as it
really will bring greater flexibility
and value to each and every
member.
We have almost finalised the
sponsorships for the year but are
still looking for some support for
Fatty’s Day and the Christmas
tinny competition, so if you
would like to discuss sponsorship
options for the coming year, flick
Beno and email at vice.president@
broomefishingclub.com.au. We
would love to thank all the current
support that we’ve had to this
point from our 2015 sponsors.
We are working on finding ways
to help each and every one of you
promote your business throughout
the year. Remember that we
have a great audience on Friday
nights that consist of a wide range
of angling abilities and some
who are generally interested in
developing their fishing skills. As
a club we are more than willing
to support anyone who wishes
to promote their products or just
wishes to engage the audience
on some other level. We’ve had
great deal of interest in having
some introduction to fly fishing
sessions, focusing on the gear
and the techniques for casting
efficiently. Additionally the
success of the blue water sessions
popular demand we’ve

we had last year have promoted
us to plan Sunday session to
extended our knowledge on some
of our iconic sportsfish. We are
hoping to have this organised for
the middle of May around some
bigger tides. This session will
cover off on the finer points of
finding the fish, the gear that we
use to target blue water species
around Broome, how to rig simple
baits and we are hoping to have
the Reel Tech simulator back
down at the club so that anglers
can test some new skills out on a
few fish before even setting a hook
into a fish! These events will be
posted to the club Facebook page
as they arise. Comment on them
when they pop up so that we can
get an idea of numbers.
The Thready Shootout is later this
week and the Mayday competition
is only a stones throw away. Both
competitions have had the rules
revised. The revised rules now
include a brand new Mystery
length category for adults and
kids sections and Mayday now
has a category set aside for land
based competitors to compete for
their own title! Both events are
now camping out events, enabling
anglers to make the most of a
weekend out on the water.
While on the topic of up coming
events, we’ve made an alteration
to the Billfish week for 2015.

com.au. The main competition
will run as scheduled and the
registration for the events will still
be on the Friday 24th July.
Our Hawaiian International
Billfish Tournament invitation
is still open for 2015. This
gives members of the club the
opportunity to fish an event
with world wide exposure. The
team is open to Male and Female
anglers, but you must be a full
member of the club and be willing
to pay your own way along with
sharing team costs. What better
way to get amongst one of the
most successful Billfishing events
around the world! 8 - 15th August
2015. Email us at vice.president@
broomefishingclub.com.au for
contacts for the event.
Numbers of people through the
door on Open day were down
on previous years. Whether it
was due to the stifling weather or
the fact that we had changed the
event to a Saturday will probably
never be known. The committee
is currently in the process of
reviewing the day and the future
that it has in its current format.
Overall the day was a great
success, especially for those
kids who got to take part in
the Recfishwest casting clinic
supported by the lads at Workline
Dive and Tackle. The Reel Tech
Fishing simulator copped a
work out over the day, with Troy
Dalstrom taking out the prize for
the fastest time to land a Sailfish.
At 34 seconds he narrowly pipped
Club manger; Chris Macleod
at the post for honours. Karen
Crosby got out and about to
educate the little ones on the finer
points of using a cast net correctly.
If anyone hasn’t actually seen
Karen in action with that cast net
of hers then you probably should
pull her aside and ask for a few
tips!
A local contingent of Broome’s
businesses and departments came
down to present new information
and equipment that will be
available for sale in their stores
this coming dry season. Chris
gave a demonstration to the crowd
on how to correctly fillet a fish
without suffering the same fate as
Beno’s fish last year.
Photo Competition
The odd battle with Barramundi
has still been occurring over
the last few weeks, and many of
the fish are in great condition,
especially the ones that I’ve seen
photo’s of that have been over the
80cm mark.
Proudly sponsored by Rapala,
Okuma and Storm Lures. submit
any fishing photo providing it
displays correct fish handling.
Photo’s don’t have to be of anglers
holding fish.
We should see another good patch
of action on the Barra before the
weather cools down. The river has
still be hit or miss but the general
trend is encouraging for those
wanting to head away camping
for the weekend. At this time of
year the Barra from the river are
stacking on the condition before
the cool weather slows their
feeding activity to a halt. It’s very
common for them to be feeding
on tiny Bony Herring so don’t be
afraid to use small baits if that’s
all you can get, you’ll just have to
beat the catfish away with a stick!
They could be anything to
do with the recreational
fishing experience!
#BFCfisingcompetition when
posting, this makes it much
easier to track posts. Photo’s will
not be formally judged, Biggest
number of Likes wins. Photo’s
can be submitted also through
instagram, just use the same

Images displaying excessive blood,
poor handling practice; including
images of billfish out of the water
will be omitted from the comp.
A few anglers have already made
some contributions and a really

think that you’ve got what it takes
then make sure you submit what
you’ve got, you never know what
the public will love!
The report
The fishing has been heating
up ever since we’ve been seeing
better weather conditions. Makes
you wonder what the fishing is
like when we can’t get out there?
The mud crab fishing is a little
slow but crabbers have been
commenting that the numbers are
on the increase. Some crabbers
heading up the Peninsula have
commented on the good size of
the green muddies that they’ve
encountered. Hopefully we will
see some of this action down here
in the bay when the freshwater
running into the bay eases a little.
The freshwater running in at Crab
creek is still hanging around and
should offer anglers a good chance
of targeting school sized Threadfin
salmon over the coming weeks.
This should give anglers fishing
the Thready shootout an awesome
chance to get amongst good
numbers of fish.
Offshore reports are still very
quiet. I had some very good
action drifting broken bottom
North West of Cable beach lately.
The Trevally were prominent and
the small Coral Trout couldn’
t resist a baited jig. There have
been abundances of small spotted
and Spanish Mackerel around
the place as well small pockets of
Tuna, so trolling lures in likely
areas could be worthwhile for
those chasing a tasty feed.
There have also been a couple of
reports that there are a couple of
small Black Marlin, and limited
numbers of Sailfish appearing
for those searching for them.
Considering that the weather
has not mad it easy to get out
widegetting out wide this is
certainly encouraging for the
coming months.
Tips and tackle
How many times have you heard
that the fishing has been going off,
but you still come home without
anything in the esky. Have you
ever asked yourself why? What
are you doing wrong?
I must say that I’ve been there and
done that. A few things helped me
on my way. Probably the biggest
thing is listening to what people
are saying and to take everything
in, not just the little bits that you
want to here. The club now has a
great level of patronage on Fridays
nights. This is the best place to
hit people up about where to go
and what to do. Developing key
relationships with other anglers
is very important to finding out
what techniques work.
Number two is to take notice
of what isn’t working and try
something new. It could mean
changing from fishing a live bait,
to fishing a dead bait.
Fishing at a different time of the
tide or a completely different
tidal cycle. Trying a different rig
or different lure will commonly
change the outcome for the day.
It would be rare day where I don’t
change tactics to produce a good
bite. You might even change how
you fish a particularly favourite
lure - speeding up or slowing
down a retrieve will bring a fresh
perspective when the fishing is
slow, especially if you are fishing
surface lures.
Above and beyond all, don’t just
sit in the same spot for hours at a
time. Moving with the tide and
assessing your position regularly
will prove to find you more fish.
