The Patriot Press March, 2016 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE (By Larry Oshodi) VOLUME 11, ISSUE 3 strong support of our parent community. GO PATRIOTS! Dear Parents, Great things continue to happen at Heritage. Our two Robotics teams were very successful at the NorCal FIRST Challenge tournament. Team “Patriots” won 2nd place in the Control Award category for best use of sensors and computer programming for a robot and the “Spaceballs” qualified to move onto the Western United States Regional Championships. After a grueling and intense season competing against students from the best private and public schools in the county, our Mock Trials Team defeated the defending champions at the Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) Mock Trials Tournament. I also want to congratulate Celia Rivera for winning 3rd place at the San Francisco regionals for the National Shakespeare Competition. Our Speech and Debate team also continue to win individual and team awards, sometimes competing against each other after defeating contestants from other schools. In athletics, all of our winter season teams successfully moved on to the playoffs after the regular season ended. Our boys’ soccer team went on to play in the NCS semi-finals game and our girls’ basketball team played in the NCS finals game and then moved on to the NorCal state championship tournament. Academically, almost half of our students made the Honor Roll!! I am extremely proud of our students and staff for their many accomplishments. I’m also proud and very appreciative of the COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL (By Rose Thompson) Mr. Oshodi would like to invite you to Coffee with the Principal. We hope to see you at one of the following meetings: March 31 April 28 May 26 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (ELAC) (By Julene MacKinnon) All parent English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. in the Career Center – 2nd Floor of the Media Center. Through Covered California, a program from the state of California, qualified legal residents of California and their families can compare health insurance plans and enroll in the one that works best for their needs and budget. Financial assistance is available to qualifying individuals and families to help them pay for health insurance premiums. This means the federal government may pay a portion of the health insurance premium. SUMMER SCHOOL 2016 (By Rose Thompson) WHO: Presently enrolled (2015-16) 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grade students (12th = 2016 non-grads). Econ and English 4, will be offered at Liberty High School. Govt. Econ and English 4 will be offered as independent study through Independence High School for 5th year seniors only (2016 non-grads). The open-enrollment period to enroll in Covered California health insurance plans happens once a year. Once the open enrollment period closes, you may enroll in a Covered California health plan only if you have a qualifying life event that makes you eligible to apply. Some examples of qualifying life events are: losing your health coverage, getting married, moving outside your plan’s coverage area, having a baby and turning 26. Summer School is NOT MANDATORY; it is an opportunity. Students who attend Summer School should expect to be dropped if they do not comply with all attendance and behavior policies. ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory. Each session (9 days) is equal to one semester. Students must attend all 9 days of class (each semester) or their grade and credit will be jeopardized. Board Policy – AR 6177 - Because summer courses cover extensive instructional content in a relatively short time period, consistent class attendance is crucial. Students who have more than 6 hours of absence may not receive credit for their summer session class(es) unless authorized by the Summer School Principal. APPLICATION DEADLINES Session 1 - 3:00 p.m., Fri., March 11, 2016 (only 1st semester classes are offered during Session 1) Session 2 - 3:00 p.m., Fri., June 3, 2016 (only 2nd semester classes are offered during Session 2) PLEASE NOTE: Second semester “walkin” applications will be accepted (if space is available) beginning June 8, 2016. No “walk-in” applications will be accepted on the first day of classes, June 7, 2016. Summer School applications are available. Please see your student’s counselor for an application. FOOD SERVICES: The Summer School campus will be considered a CLOSED CAMPUS. Students will not be allowed to leave campus during breaks or lunch. Food service will be provided on campus. Free/reduced lunch is provided for those students eligible. TRANSPORTATION: LUHSD shuttle service will be available for those students attending Summer School. Students will be picked up in front of Freedom and Heritage High Schools at 7:30 a.m. and transported to Liberty High School. The buses will leave Liberty High School at 3:10 p.m. and transport students back to Freedom and Heritage High Schools. Students WILL NOT be picked up or dropped off at home! Transportation is NOT available to/from Independence High School for students in the Independent Study Program. DRESS CODE: District Dress Code (BP/AR 5132) will be strictly enforced. All clothing shall be within bounds of decency and good taste. Shirts and shoes are required at all times. Hats and sunglasses are not to be worn in classrooms/instructional areas. Wearing of any gang symbols, such as handkerchiefs, suspenders, belts, shoestrings, jewelry, jackets associated with group intimidation or gang affiliation is strictly prohibited BEHAVIOR: Students must fulfill the expectations listed in the student agreement. Parents/Guardians must support their child in these behavior expectations. Any student who is not a current HHS Junior will need a DANCE BID. DANCE BIDS are due on March 9th before our break. DANCE BIDS may be picked up at any SLC office. COUNSELING CORNER By Natalie Mathrole As we approach the fourth quarter of the year we want to remind you of summer school deadlines that are rapidly approaching (first session deadline is March 11th and second session deadline is June 3rd). Summer school applications are now available in the SLC offices for those students that need to remediate an F or D grade in a graduation requirement course. Please contact your student’s counselor for more information. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for submitting your student’s course requests online. If your student signed up to take an Advanced Placement course next year, please make sure that they check in with their teacher for summer work before leaving for summer vacation. Students will be notified of AP courses they will be enrolled in later in the year. If your student changes their mind about taking an AP course, please have them notify their counselor as soon as possible. If you have a current senior, make sure you are monitoring their grades in current classes to assure that they are still on track for college admissions and graduation. Earning a D or F grade or a dramatic drop in GPA can jeopardize admissions. The team defeated the defending champions California High School, finishing higher than any Heritage team in our ten year history. Mock Trials has the longest season of any team sport, starting in September and ending in February. Over the six months the team traveled to San Raphael, Alhambra HS, Miramonte HS, the Santa Clara Invitational and finally to the CCCOE Tournament at the Martinez Court House. During the tournament, our team defeated El Cerrito HS, Richmond HS, Campolindo HS, Northgate HS and finally California HS. Many of these teams are coached by lawyers and retired judges. Northgate HS is coached by Mark Peterson, the District Attorney of Contra Costa and the Ron Leone, Vice Mayor of Concord. The Liberty Union High School District has transitioned to a new Student Information System, Parent Portal through ABI (Aeries Browser Interface) for parents. We think you will enjoy the new interface and access to more timely information. The attendance in the portal is updated live-time, as are any assignment updates completed by the teachers. Who do I contact if I need assistance? If you need assistance, you may contact The ABI Parent Portal website was completed with FAQs, video instructions, and other documentation to assist you in navigating the portal. The interface is Heritage directly; however, we request that you first go to the online resources on the Parent Info tab to address your questions. CAFETERIA COMPUTERIZED PAYMENT SYSTEM How do I get an account? Accounts were generated at the end of the first quarter. Any parent with an accurate email address listed in the student’s electronic record received an email with the login process as soon as the portal was opened. Do I have to have an email address listed to get an account? Yes. If your email address is not listed in your child’s record and/or you did not update it at walk-thru, please contact the school or email [email protected] to have that information listed in your child’s electronic record. If you do not have an email account, you can create one for free through G-mail. Can my son/daughter sign up for an account? Yes, your son/daughter can sign up to access his/her own account. To do so, your son or daughter’s email address should be listed in the student’s record. The view for a student is identical to that of a parent, so they will want to select “Student” when asked what type of account they want to create. The Liberty Union High School District recently adopted the Nutrikids computerized Point-of-Sale payment system for meals purchased in the district’s cafeterias. Some parents may be familiar with a similar system that is used by some of the elementary schools. Each student has their own meal account based on their Student ID number. Transactions will only require that the student swipe their ID card across a scanner that is located at each cashier terminal. The posting of credits to your child’s account is done on the Nutrikids website by using a credit card or via Paypal. A link to nutrikids.com is on the Parent Portal, and also on the HHS website. You will be able to view your child’s meal purchases online, by accessing your account on the Nutrikids website. We are encouraging you to create an account for your child, but the system is flexible, so you may still pay for meals with cash. If your child qualifies for Free-or-Reduced price lunches or breakfasts, this information is securely contained within the system and the transaction will be processed just as it is for all other students. If you are concerned about a food allergy that your child has, please provide the cafeteria with this information. A warning will appear on the cashier’s screen for a quick review of the items on the student’s meal tray. HERITAGE ROBOTICS (By Rob Pardi) In January, Heritage Robotics Teams took top honors at Intel Corporation in Folsom. The two robotics teams knocked off the two top seeds in the semis and squared off in the finals. Winning Team: “Mission Impossible” Team members who participated at this event were Andrew Williams, Miranda Breves, Nick Leuenberger and Ilia Andriychuk. Finalist Team: “The Patriots” Team members who participated at this event were Brandon Lopez and Xingbu Qin. Team “Mission Impossible” was awarded the PTC Design award for the best overall robot design. Team “The Patriots” was awarded the Rockwell Collins Innovate award for the most innovative robot design. Team “Mission Impossible” has earned the right to participate in the FIRST Tech. Challenge Northern California Championships to be held on February 2728, 2016. UPDATE: "The Patriots" and "The Spaceballs" from Heritage were among the top 48 FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics teams in Northern California to compete in the NorCal Championships at Newark Memorial High School. Both Heritage teams faced each other in the division semifinals with "The Spaceballs" coming out on top. Spaceballs eventually won their division but lost in the tournament Championship finals. "The Patriots" team was awarded 2nd place in the Control Award category for best use of sensors and computer programming for a robot. "The Spaceballs" have now qualified to move onto the Western United States Regional Championships held in Oakland on March 24-26. HHS PERFORMING ARTS BOOSTERS (By Steve Ernest) February 6th & 7th was a busy weekend for Heritage musicians. Three members of Wind Ensemble/Symphonic Band auditioned and became members of the 2016 County Honor Band (Adan Ortega (12), Tiffany Do (11), and Brooke Farrar (9). February 6th was also our Annual Spring Swing Fling at Shadow Lakes. The Heritage Jazz A and B bands were joined by Brentwood Big Band for a night of live swing music, fine eats, and lots of smiles. Boys State is held at Sacramento State University and Girls State is at Pitzer College in Claremont. The delegates will work and study programs in functional government. The delegates are students that have a sense of civic The AFJROTC first Radio Controlled Aero Club meeting took place on Monday, January 11, 2016. Romeo Durscher, from Visual Aerials came in and gave a presentation on the countless activities you can do with the Phantom-3 drone. After the presentation club members went outside and watched as Romeo flew the drone and explained interesting things about the amazing piece of technology. He angled the camera for us to see ourselves from 100 feet up in the sky. In this new RC Club we will be learning how to fly the drone but also to use radio control to fly it on auto piloted missions. The hope of this club, with the help of the Patriot Jet Team, is to learn the basics of flying radio controlled aircraft while having fun with fellow cadets. the win!! The teams played earlier this year to a 4-4 draw. ■ Congratulations to Celia Rivera, Heritage’s entry at the San Francisco Regionals for the National Shakespeare competition. With 30 schools competing, Celia won 3rd place and a $200 prize. It was an impressive performance at a very challenging event. ■ On Saturday, March 5th, the Delta Region Odyssey of the Mind competition took place at Edna Hill Middle School. Three teams represented the Liberty Union High School District; two teams from Heritage and one team from Liberty. All three teams are going on to the State competition on April 2nd at the U.C. Riverside campus. The team advanced to semifinals and missed finals by 1.15. Overall, the PATRIOTS finished 11th – the TOP California team and west of Texas. ■ Congratulations to our Varsity Boys Soccer Team on an epic win over De La Salle in the first NCS playoff game in school history!
