Dresden at Christmas Time 2010 Christmas Markets | Concerts Events | Exhibitions Decoration of the Dresden Christmas Tree 4th Advent weekend, 18. – 19.12.2010 Dresden Striezelmarkt 1 The 576th Dresden Striezelmarkt at the Altmarkt 25.11. – 24.12.2010 Daily 10am to 9pm 25.11.2010, 4pm to 9pm 24.12.2010, 10am to 2pm www.dresden.de/striezelmarkt Experience Tradition Anew When the chants of the Dresden “Kreuzchor” choir drift out of the wide-open doors of the Kreuzkirche church into the Altmarkt, and fill the alleyways between the opulently decorated market stalls, Dresden and its guests know: the Advent season has arrived. Every year for more than half a millennium, the city’s central square is transformed into a Christmas wonderland: the Dresden Striezelmarkt. As Germany’s oldest Christmas market, it has maintained its traditions to this day. Merchants offer wooden art from the Ore Mountains, gingerbread from the gingerbread town of Pulsnitz or Herrnhuter paper stars. There is always the scent of hot mulled wine in the air over the many small places, where the original Dresden Christstollen tastes best in the romantic air. Towards evening, the world’s largest Erzgebirge Christmas pyramid as well as the Christmas arch, which you can walk on, extend above of the sea of lights. The children’s adventure world is the main daytime attraction. Here, the prune chimney sweep’s cottage and the bakery are open to the little ones for kneading and arts and crafts. Furthermore, there is the puppet theatre, merry-go-round and a children’s railway. The daily stage programme provides Christmas cheer and the events on the Advent weekends are a special highlight. Prune Chimney Sweep and Gingerbread Festival 1st Advent weekend 27. – 28.11.2010 Dresden Stollen Festival 2nd Advent weekend, 4. – 5.12.2010 A giant stollen is pulled in a procession through the Baroque old town to the Striezelmarkt and is cut and handed out by the “royal court master baker“ and the Dresden stollen maiden. Pyramid and Christmas Arch Festival 3rd Advent weekend, 11. – 12.12.2010 With a height of a good 14 metres, the Erzgebirge Pyramid overlooks the hubbub of the Dresden Striezelmarkt, and the motives on the six steps “come alive” for the Pyramid festival. Further highlights are a singing contest and performances by popular musicians. The diverse programme tells the history of the prune chimney sweep (Pflaumentoffel). The “Gingerbread Princess” will also be crowned. The Christmas theme, charity, is the main focus of the decoration of the Dresden Christmas tree: Clubs, media and organisations from Dresden each decorate a Christmas tree and donate it to an establishment where people live who cannot be home for Christmas. The Striezelmarkt newspaper includes a detailed programme and is available one week before the opening of the market from the city of Dresden, Tel: +49 351 488 1840 Fax: +49 351 488 1843 www.dresden.de/striezelmarkt or from the office in the Striezelmarkt. Child Care at the “Elves’ Cottage” in the Striezelmarkt Mon – Thurs 2pm to 6pm Fri 2pm to 7pm Sat – Sun 11am to 7pm Face painting, story telling, drawing and crafts (starting from 1 year of age) Christmas Market Prager Strasse 25.11. – 24.12.2010 2 Daily 10am to 9pm 25.11.2010 4pm to 9pm 24.12.2010 10am to 2pm Advent at the Neumarkt Dresden Christmas Markets Christmas in Dresden is not only the famous Striezelmarkt. A whole Christmas mile extends from the Christmas market on Prager Strasse right across to the other side of the Elbe to the Christmas market on the Hauptstrasse and to the Neustadt Advent, where a preChristmas air invites visitors to stroll along festively illuminated streets of the baroque neighbourhood around the Hauptstrasse, Königstrasse and the Wilhelminian quarter, Outer Neustadt, where a diverse programme of Christmas events is offered. The “Advent at the Neumarkt” takes you back to more than 100 years ago and shows how things looked here between 1830 and 1920. In this same spirit, costumed craftspeople, artists and merchants offer highquality traditional and hand-made products at the historical Christmas market. There is a lot to see: book printer, wood carver, letterer, hatter, bag-maker, goldsmith, chocolatier, candy maker and much more. Right next to the Neumarkt, you can stroll over to the small and cosy Christmas market by the Frauenkirche and be impressed by the seasonal air of the Münzgasse, which is decorated with a multitude of lights and the ultra big Herrnhuter Star. For the first time, a Christmas market for gourmets greets its guests in the romantic inner courtyard of the Kurländer Palace. Ten market stands offer all sorts of treats. You can still come here when most of the traditional Christmas markets have already closed. There is a whole other atmosphere at the Elbhangfest Christmas market, which is nestled among picturesque half-timbered houses near the “Blue Wonder” bridge. In lovingly decorated stalls, merchants offer products ranging from handicrafts, pottery, pewter, glass and wickerwork. Insider tips include select concerts at the Dreikönigskirche and many other Dresden churches, with Frauenkirche Advent music, oratorios, organ recitals and gospel concerts to accompany you through a reflective and joyful Advent and Christmas season. The Christmas concert from the Dresden Philharmonic takes listeners to the fairy-tale Christmas world of our dreams with the pantomime Hansel and Gretel. During Advent, performances of Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” or the ballet “Sleeping Beauty” carry us off into a fairy-tale world where good triumphs over evil. This year’s children’s and family play at the Staatsschauspiel Theatre Dresden is the world premiere of the fantasy adventure “Reckless” by Cornelia Funke. The story, set almost exclusively in the 19th century, is about the brothers Jacob and Will Reckless and is inspired by the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. There will be eerie gingerbread houses, a queen who is served by dwarves, unicorns, fairies, a speaking fox and much more. The music for the stage version is from the Dresden band Polarkreis 18, who also attract international attention with their chart success. “Christmas aboard the Theatre Barge” has also become a fond tradition with Christmas songs and stories. The “Striezelmarkt Economy” is the end-of-year message from the satire icons Manfred Breschke and Thomas Schuch, who present you with a review of the past year’s highlights. Once again this winter, the Landesbühnen Sachsen are presenting several Christmas fairy tales: Wilhelm Hauff’s fairy tale “Dwarf Longnose” promises exiting adventure, the “Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens as a ballet will enthuse the whole family, and “Hansel and Gretel”, just like every year, takes one right to the heart of magic. The children’s opera “Petterson and Findus” will also be restaged. This year’s exhibition focuses on the Advent calendar and Erzgebirge Mountains folk art. 200 of the most beautiful Advent calendars from the collection of the Berlin Museum of European Cultures will be presented. Erzgebirge folk art is known throughout the world for its Christmas lighted figures, pyramids, nutcrackers, smoking men and toys. The Dresden City Museum will be showing the most beautiful pieces from the collection of Klaus F. W. Tempel from Dresden. The oldest of which is about 150 years old. A special highlight during the Advent and Christmas season at the Transport Museum is the 0-gauge model railway at 325 square metres, it is one of the largest and most important model railways of its size in Europe. A popular tradition in Dresden to set the mood for Christmas is a visit to the Museum of Saxon Folk Art. The time-honoured Jägerhof with its cosy arches (recently made wheelchair-accessible) is decorated all over with individually designed Christmas trees. Folk artists show their craftsmanship, and children can do arts and crafts in the craft corner. The bells never sound sweeter than at Christmas time…! Only five minutes away from the Striezelmarkt, the Deutsches Hygiene Museum welcomes you to the special exhibition “What is BEAUTIFUL?”. The exhibition offers multifaceted insights and suggestions to reflect about one’s own relationship to beauty. This year’s Christmas exhibition at the Burgk Manor in Freital traces back the origins of probably the most classic Christmas figures, the angel and miner, in all their different facets. In the 17th century, churches in the Erzgebirge region already used miner figurines as candleholders instead of altar candleholders. 16 Christmas in the Landhaus 27.11.2010 – 9.1.2011 Advents and Christmas Songs Concert 27.11.2010, 12., 18.12.2010, 4pm 5., 19.12.2010, 11am and 3pm More information in November at www.neustaedteradvent.de Advent Songs 11.12., 18.12.2010, 2pm Tues – Thurs, Sat, Sun 10am to 6pm, Fri 10am to 7pm, Closed on 24., 25., 31.12.2010, 1.1.2011 Deutsches Hygiene - Museum Dresden with children’s museum Lingnerplatz 1 www.dhmd.de Dresden Transport Museum Augustusstraße 1 www.verkehrsmuseum-dresden.de What is BEAUTIFUL?
