A brief history of the
Dom Museum Wien
•
Founded in 1933
•
In 1973, the museum moved from the Archbishop‘s
Palace to its current location
•
In 1980 the museum‘s holdings were expanded to
include the Otto Mauer Collection
•
The museum was closed in early 2012, and is since
undergoing a major redesign and restructuring, with
the re-opening scheduled for fall 2016.
•
In March 2013 Dr. Johanna Schwanberg was
appointed the new director

• He funded and promoted the artists of the young Austrian avant-garde
during a time when there was no institutional or legal groundwork for
funding for the arts

Secessionists (Klimt, Schiele,

• The Otto Mauer Prize has been
awarded annually to young
Austria-based artists since 1983
• The prize also stipulates the
purchase of a major piece by the
respective winner
• Guarantees that the collection is
continuously expanded to include
contemporary works.
• Recent additions include pieces by
Heimo Zobernig, Johanna Kandl,
Dorit Margreiter, Esther Stocker,
and Nilbar Güres.
• Since 2013, the museum has also
begun to acquire further works for
the collection

The new Dom Museum Wien
In continuation of Monsignore Otto Mauer’s legacy:
• Permanent exhibition,
• Special exhibitions and events (contemporary perspectives
on the history of sacred art),
• Projects by contemporary artists
Inter-cultural and interfaith questions will be addressed, as
well as existential themes that form the cornerstones of the
Christian faith, such as identity, migration, marginalization,
violence, and poverty.
