Haiti: The Earthquake!
On January 12, 2010, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude hit Haiti. It killed ¼ million people,
injured over 300,000 and left 1.6 million people homeless. (Photo credit: Reuters)!

Hôpital Sacré Coeur saved thousands!
Far from the epicenter, CRUDEM Foundation’s Hôpital Sacré Coeur survived the
earthquake and thousands were flown in by helicopter. (Photo credit: CRUDEM Foundation)!

Project HOPE sent engineers!
When most NGOs sent medical workers, Project HOPE sent engineers. There were
thousands of amputees due to emergency surgeries after the earthquake. With our help,
Project HOPE safely installed portable prosthetics labs throughout Haiti. !

Our strong relationship with Haiti continued, transcending the earthquake and cholera
epidemic that followed. (Photo credit: Project HOPE)!

What we learned!
In Haiti and many other parts of the world,
engineering is a life-giving profession.!

Haiti Needs: Safety, reliability & sustainability!
Like many developing places, electricity in Haiti is tenuous on a good day, let alone a
disaster. The needs are vast: ranging from short-term safety, to mid-term reliability, to
long-term sustainability. Mazzetti works to address all three of these needs. !

Re-engineering Hôpital Sacré Coeur!
Located in Milot, this is the largest private hospital in the North of Haiti. It serves a large
catchment area, far beyond the town. !

The Facts: Hôpital Sacré Coeur!
u Founded in 1970s (in current location since 1987)!
u 75,000sf healthcare campus!
u 120 patient beds; doubled capacity during earthquake &
cholera epidemic!
u Several ad hoc additions built over the years !
u Electric grid destroyed in earthquake!
u Cost to run generators: over $0.40/kWh*!
u Great solar access!
u But first needed to address basic safety & reliability
needs!
*including maintenance and amortization

Overview: steps to renewable electricity!
Alleviate safety
issues
•  Put it underground
•  Rewire for safety
Install stable
conventional
systems
Install sustainable
& renewable
systems
•  Generators
•  Battery backups
•  Solar
•  Waste to energy
Mazzetti Case Studies: Haiti!
16!
Step 1: Alleviate safety issues!
Fires, electrocutions and outages were all very real problems. The hospital was losing
expensive medical equipment due to spikes. Loose wires hung out of boxes and broken
outlets existed where children played. !
Mazzetti Case Studies: Haiti!
17!
1A. Put it underground!
Lines were hit by trees and trucks. Residents tapped into the hospital’s electricity, with
sometimes deadly consequences. The solution: put the distribution system underground.
Mazzetti Case Studies: Haiti!
!
18!
1B. Rewire!
For 3 years, we brought volunteer electricians down to do the job of rewiring the hospital
to a basic level of safety and reliability. !
Mazzetti Case Studies: Haiti!
19!
Step 2: Install stable conventional systems!
Before!
After!
Mazzetti Case Studies: Haiti!
20!
3. Install sustainable & renewable systems!
Solar panels provide much needed energy self-reliance for the hospital: diesel for their
generators comes from Venezuela, where the supply is erratic, the prices are very high –
energy is the #2 cost to operate this hospital, second only to staff. !

Logistics: how does a box car get to Haiti?!
It goes through the Panama Canal! From this project we created a ready-made toolbox of
equipment and supplies – much like Project HOPE’s prosthetics lab – which we can ship
to any new project. !

Teaching skills, transforming lives!
The social impacts are incredible in a country with 80% unemployment and low education
levels. We work with at least a 1:1 ratio: 1 Haitian to 1 American – to teach skills, provide
local jobs and ensure the equipment maintenance. !
Mazzetti Case Studies: Haiti!
26!
Benefits: social impact!
•  Stable, working
hospital improve pride
as well as health!
•  Old wires used for
houses!
•  Boost to economy from
jobs & volunteers
spending money!
•  Bridge between
societies!
Improve
public
health!
•  Diesel fumes reduced!
•  Reliable Haitian hospital
in times of disaster!
•  Jobs help Haitians feed
& take care of their
families!
Impact
local
community!
Provide
jobs and
skills!
•  Reduced outages from
fuel embargos & high
costs!
•  ICU and OR have
reliable electricity & AC!
•  No fires in panels and
wire nests!
•  No shocks when
flipping on a switch!
Save !
lives!
Mazzetti Case Studies: Haiti!
•  1:1 means we’re
always teaching skills!
•  Many have gone on to
use their skills regularly
for income!
•  English skills, personal
help from electricians!
27!
Benefits: reverse innovation!
Experience finds
Haitian doctors wash
hands with cold water!
Research shows US
systems actually
breed legionella!
Can we develop a
way to simplify US
systems?!
Can we adapt current
policies to allow for
this new method?!

“We are impatiently waiting for the new center, because the tents are really unsafe and
uncomfortable – they get very hot with the heat, and when it rains the patients get
soaked.” – GHESKIO Nurse!

GHESKIO Cholera Treatment Center!
Goal: Create a low-cost, low-energy replicable model
for cholera treatment and prevention.!
u  Innovative onsite wastewater and water
treatment system purifies 25,000 gallons of
sewage per year, stopping disease outbreak
at its source.!
u  Water catchment system delivers rainwater
through a cistern that filters and eliminates
disease.!
u  Because symptoms of cholera are odorous,
we developed a low-cost, low-energy
ventilation and temperature control
system utilizing large circulation fans. !
u  100% natural lighting minimizes energy
use.!

31!
The need for energy innovation!
We need to create more energy at a lower cost.
It’s essential. There must be creative ways to use
more solar, more air, more wind… and waste in
particular.!
!

and Professor of Medicine, Cornell University!

32!
Next Step: Waste to Energy!
Waste to energy systems can solve several problems: public health affects of burning
plastics and pharmaceuticals, emissions of diesel fuel burning in generators, and reliance
on expensive and erratic diesel fuel for energy. !
