Since 1990, BGSU has seen 32 student-athletes earn Academic All-America honors • In the spring of 2004, Stefanie Wenzel (below) became the Falcons’ sixth women’s basketball Academic All-America selection, being named to the first team. Wenzel joined twotime honoree Talita Scott (first team in 1993-94, third team in 1992-93), Stephanie Coe (first team in 1986-87), Chris Tuttle (honorable mention in 1982-83) and Jacki Raterman (third team in 1998-99) as BGSU’s Academic All-America honorees • Eight of the 13 student-athletes on the 2005-06 BGSU women’s basketball roster finished the academic year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or higher. In fact, 11 of the 13 – a total of 85 percent – maintained a cumulative GPA of over 2.50. The new Student Union has quickly established itself as the heart and soul of the University, featuring designs and programming intended to take BGSU well into the 21st century. The Student Recreation Center – a blend of a student center, health club, and sports facility – offers modern and expansive recreational facilities for the Bowling Green students, faculty/staff and alumni members. SIDNEY A. RIBEAU Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau has served as President of Bowling Green State University since 1995 and holds an academic appointment as Professor of Interpersonal Communication at the University. Under Dr. Ribeau’s leadership, BGSU has been recognized for its residential learning communities, values-based education and innovative graduate programs. It offers programs in more than 270 academic and professional fields, and maintains an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students. On the national level, he serves as a Trustee for Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association and on the President’s Council for the National Collegiate Athletic Assocation. In the State of Ohio, he serves as a Chair of the Inter-University Council of Presidents. Dr. Ribeau is active throughout the community working with the Bowling Green Area Community Partnership, the Regional Growth Partnership, Toledo Urban League, Toledo Symphony, Andersons Inc. in Maumee, Convergys Corporation, and Worthington Industries. His honors, too numerous to list here, include distinguished alumnus awards from Wayne State University and University of Illinois, scholarly recognition from the National Communication Association and the President’s Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. President Ribeau and his wife, Paula Whetsel-Ribeau, are the proud parents of three children. Active in University organizations, she is past-president of the Latino Student Union, a member of the Diversity Leadership Team and has participated in the University’s Leadershape Institute. Ms. Colon, who graduated from Clay High School in 2003, is the daughter of Diana Segura of Curtice and Roberto Colon of Oregon. SHARON S. COOK Upper Arlington (2007) Sharon Cook is a realtor with Coldwell Banker King Thompson Realtors in Upper Arlington, where she has earned designation as a member of the International President’s Elite premier sales associates. Before pursuing a real estate career, Ms. Cook enjoyed many years in education, teaching in preschool through high school grade levels. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University in 1961, graduating cum laude. At BGSU she was a member of the cheerleading squad, University Chorus, University Activities Organization and Delta Gamma Sorority. Ms. Cook holds membership in a number of professional and community organizations and remains active with her alma mater through the Columbus Alumni Chapter, the Presidents Club and the Falcon Club. She also served as the Board of Trustees Representative to the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Ms. Cook and her husband, Don, a 1958 and 1963 BGSU graduate, reside in Upper Arlington. JOHN F. HARBAL Genoa (2010) John Harbal is president and CEO of Impact Products in Sylvania Township, a manufacturer and supplier to the janitorial and sanitary supply industry. Mr. Harbal received his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1972 from Bowling Green State University. He has been an active member of the College of Business Administration’s Alumni Advisory Council and the Presidents and Falcon clubs. In 2003, he was a finalist in the Ernst & Young Northwest Ohio Entrepreneur of the Year competition. He has served as president of the Genoa Area Board of Education and helped establish the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Mr. Harbal and his wife, Kaye, reside in Catawba Island. 136 BOWLING GREEN FALCONS • 2006-07 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL STEPHANIE MAGYAR IMHOFF Granville (2013) Stephanie Magyar Imhoff, a certified public accountant, is chief financial officer of The Longaberger Co., a leading producer of handcrafted baskets and home and lifestyle products and a member of the Direct Selling Association. A 1982 cum laude graduate of BGSU in business administration, while a student she was a member of Chi Omega sorority and of student government and was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society. Imhoff is active in her community. She currently serves on the board of trustees of the YWCA of Columbus, Ohio, serves on the finance committee of the Direct Selling Association and serves on the finance committee of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. She is past board chair and treasurer of the YWCA of Columbus, past treasurer and chair of the organizations’s mission/money task force and endowment board, as well as past treasurer of the board of Columbus chapter of the United Nations Association. A native of Shadyside, Ohio, she resides in Granville, Ohio, with her husband, Keith, a 1981 BGSU graduate, and twin daughters, Grace and Sarah. MICHAEL J. MARSH VICE CHAIR Bowling Green (2009) Michael Marsh is a partner with the law firm of Marsh & Marsh Attorneys in Bowling Green and Grand Rapids and serves as attorney for the City of Bowling Green and the villages of Pemberville and Grand Rapids. Mr. Marsh received his bachelor’s degree in 1976 from Bowling Green State University and his law degree from Ohio State University in 1978. Active in the community, he was named 1999 Citizen of the Year in Bowling Green. Mr. Marsh is past president of the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce and president and co-founder of the Bowling Green Community Development Foundation. He was instrumental in the development of the BGSU Research/Enterprise Park and is a member of the Presidents and Falcon clubs. Mr. Marsh and his wife, Terri, reside in Bowling Green. BACK-TO-BACK MAC CHAMPIONS BGSU BOARD OF TRUSTEES JOHN E. MOORE, JR. Dayton (2012) John Moore is the executive director of Wright Dunbar, Inc. a Main Street Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Mr. Moore’s immediate prior positions were with Dayton Power and Light. Before that, he completed 26 years of distinguished service with the United States Air Force, retiring as a colonel. Mr. Moore was president of the Trotwood, Ohio Chamber of Commerce, Miami Valley Military Affairs Association and is the chair of Eastway Behavioral Health Care Corporation and the Heritage Ohio boards. He serves on various other boards in Dayton and is active with Leadership Ohio. A 1966 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a major in biology, Mr. Moore was the president of the Alumni Board of Directors in 2000 and is currently a member of the Alumni Board Past Presidents Council. Mr. Moore and his wife, Debra, reside in Montgomery County. WILLIAM J. PRIMROSE III Westlake (2015) William J. Primrose III is president of Primrose, Inc., which comprises The Dickey-Grabler Company, Tremont, Inc., and The Metal Marker Manufacturing Co. in northeast Ohio and Red Rock Stamping in Phoenix Arizona. He is a former president of DickeyGrabler Co. Mr. Primrose received his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1974 from BGSU and is a CPA. Bill has been a member of the Dean’s Council in the BGSU College of Business and received the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Alumnus Award. He has served on the BGSU Foundation Board and the Alumni Board and is a member of the Presidents Club. Bill’s family has significant ties to Bowling Green; both of his parents, his wife Diane, his sister and nephew are alumni. As a student he was a varsity swimmer, a fraternity Vice President and is a Trustee of the Fairview Lutheran Foundation. He resides in Westlake, Ohio. DEBRA (SCHEETZ) RYAN Wadsworth (2014) the BGSU National Campaign Steering Committee and the BGSU College of Arts & Sciences Board of Advocates. She has been active with the Wadsworth City Schools. Ms. Ryan and her husband, Patrick, a 1974 BGSU graduate, reside in Wadsworth. J. ROBERT SEBO Salem (2011) Robert Sebo is a retired senior vice president for Paychex Inc., of Rochester, New York, where he aided in the evolution of the payroll service company. Mr. Sebo received his bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1958 from BGSU. His Bowling Green affiliations include membership in the Presidents Club, Heritage Society, Falcon Club and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. In addition, he and his wife established the Bob and Karen Sebo Football Scholarship, Bob and Karen Sebo Endowed Scholarship in Jazz Studies and the Bob and Karen Sebo Lecture Series in Entrepreneurship in the College of Business Administration. Mr. Sebo and his wife, Karen, reside in Salem. MICHAEL R. WILCOX CHAIR Toledo (2008) Michael R. Wilcox is CEO of Wilcox Financial, a diversified financial services and consulting firm in Toledo. As an undergraduate, Mr. Wilcox served as Student Representative to the University Board of Trustees as well as President of the Interfraternity Council. He played on the hockey team, was a two-time captain of BGSU’s nationally ranked lacrosse team and was named as a lacrosse All-American for three consecutive years. He was inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame, the Ohio Lacrosse Hall of Fame as well as The Peddie School Athletic Hall of Fame. He serves as a Trustee of The Culver Academies. He also serves as a Trustee of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, The Toledo Hospital Foundation, the U.S. Lacrosse Foundation and is a past member of the BGSU Foundation, Inc. In addition, he is a member of the BGSU Presidents and Falcon Clubs. Mr. Wilcox and his wife Jan, a 1975 graduate, reside in Toledo. He was appointed to the Board in 1999 for a term ending in 2008. Debra (Scheetz) Ryan is co-founder, vice president and secretary of the PDR Foundation Inc., a private family charitable foundation,and of the PDR Group, LLC, a family limited partnership/investment company. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Bowling Green State University in 1974. As a student she was vice president of Alpha Chi Omega, a member of Beta Beta Beta biology honorary, an orientation leader and a member of the Student Body board. Currently, she is a member of BOWLING GREEN FALCONS • 2006-07 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BACK-TO-BACK MAC CHAMPIONS 137 DR. ED WHIPPLE Dr. Edward G. Whipple joined the Bowling Green State University staff in July of 1994, and continues a 25-year career in higher education administration. As Vice President for Student Affairs, he is responsible for the overall administration of nearly every area of student life at BGSU and a variety of programs, including intercollegiate athletics, counseling, cooperative education, career services, health, disability services, multicultural affairs, recreational sports, golf course, ice arena program, residence life, Greek affairs, student life programs, student publications, the Bowen-Thompson Student Union and University Dining Services. In conjunction with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, he also oversees the BGeXperience program and the Office of Student Academic Achievement, a retention-based program. Dr. Whipple is an adjunct associate professor in the Division of Higher Education and Student Affairs in the College of Education and Human Development. During his tenure at Bowling Green, the following university-wide initiatives have been implemented: * Realignment of student services and programs to reflect institution goals and priorities * The integration of the intercollegiate athletics program into the Division of Student Affairs * Thirty-five million dollar student union renovation and expansion * More than 80 million dollars in residence hall and small group living renovations including an establishment of system-wide residential computer labs * Increase in residence hall occupancy * The creation of the First-Year Experience Program * The creation of learning communities in the Residence Life area Dr. Whipple graduated with a degree in English and French from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. After earning a master’s degree in English from Northwestern University, he taught high school English and French in Chicago and Reedsport, Oregon, in addition to coaching swimming and track. In 1978, he enrolled in the college student services administration doctoral program at Oregon State University. He received his doctorate in 1981 and his first student affairs position was Greek affairs coordinator at Iowa State University, where he supervised the activities of 48 fraternity and sorority chapters. In 1982, he was named associate dean of students and assistant professor of education and a member of the graduate faculty at Texas Tech University. In 1985, he became dean of students at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, and taught in the Department of English. Prior to coming to Bowling Green, Dr. Whipple was vice president for student affairs at Montana State University-Billings, and that institution’s first vice president for student affairs. At that institution he was given the challenge of reorganizing the student affairs area at Montana State, a university of 3,800 students. In addition to managing the student affairs program, Dr. Whipple was also an associate professor and taught courses in both the School of Liberal Arts (English literature) and the School of Education (teacher preparation). He has written articles for student affairs journals, texts, and monographs and is affiliated with several professional organizations. He has held leadership positions at the regional and national level in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). Currently, he serves as President of NASPA’s Foundation Board and is also a member of that organization’s Journal Board. He currently serves as Chair of the Council of on Student Affairs of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges Council on Student Affairs. He also serves on the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges as an evaluator for institution accreditation. Dr. Whipple served two terms as President of the Ohio Student Personnel Association. He is the past international President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and is currently the national President of Order of Omega, the Greek/leadership/scholarship honorary. Dr. Whipple has served on the Woodlane Industries Board of Trustees and is Vice President of the Bowling Green Exchange Club. He has served as President of the BGSU Friends of the Libraries and the Bowling Green Junior High School PTO. * A revision of the Code of Student Conduct * Creation of the first University Student Handbook * Revamping of the general fee process to allow significant student input into the institution budgeting process including increased funding for student organizations * Creation of a Student Affairs fund raising program 138 BOWLING GREEN FALCONS • 2006-07 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL His educational background also includes traveling to France to study the French language at the University de Caen in Caen and graduate work at the Universite Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers. In 1988, he took a special management development program at Harvard University. Dr. Whipple is the parent of a 19-year-old son, John. He and his wife, Cindy, a member of the Romance Languages faculty at BGSU, reside in Bowling Green. BACK-TO-BACK MAC CHAMPIONS GREG CHRISTOPHER Greg Christopher was named Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs/Director of Athletics at Bowling Green State University on June 13, 2006. Christopher previously was Associate A.D. for External Relations and John Purdue Club Director at Purdue University. Christopher, who is the 12th full-time athletic director in school history, oversees an 18-sport program which has a budget of $14.3-million and 73 full-time employees. BGSU, which is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), is one of 13 programs in the country which sponsor Division I-A football and compete in men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey on the Division I level. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from MAC-member Miami University in 1988 and earned his MBA from the institution in 1991. He played football for one season before the former linebacker’s career was cut short due to injury. In 1987-88 and 1990-91, Christopher was involved as a television color commentator in football and play-byplay voice for men’s ice hockey which aired on regional cable television and WPTD-TV in Dayton. He also served as a graduate assistant in the Office of Admissions at Miami in 1990-91. Christopher, 40, is married to the former Tina Smith of Leetonia, Ohio. The couple has a son, Zachary, 10, and two daughters, Megan and Allison, ages 8 and 6. Christopher, a native of West Lafayette, Ind., had been at Purdue since 1997 and was a member of the department’s senior staff which collaborated on all athletic, human resource and management issues. He served in that position since March of 2005 and was accountable for external and revenue-related areas for Purdue’s $50-million department. In his role, he oversaw several areas, including development, marketing, promotions and advertising, athletic licensing and sports information. Under his leadership, Purdue raised $17.2-million in total giving for Athletics last year. He also played a significant role in a seven-year campus-wide capital campaign which is in the final two years and is on track to raise $111 million for Athletics during that period. Projects that have come to fruition in this time frame include tripling the number of endowed athletic scholarships and several facility additions or renovations. Among the facility projects are an indoor golf training center, football stadium renovation, aquatic center, indoor tennis center, and basketball video board campaign. He also was the advisor for Purdue’s chapter of Athletes-in-Action. Additionally, Christopher served a period of time as the sport administrator for Purdue’s men’s and women’s tennis programs. In addition to working with the teams during this period, he oversaw fundraising and business planning for the facility which will not only benefit the University, but will serve as a tennis club for the entire community. He began his career on the Boilermaker staff as Assistant Director of the John Purdue Club from 1997-99 and was promoted to Director in 1999. He was promoted to Assistant A.D. in 2002 and was the program administrator for tennis prior to 2005. Christopher served as Executive Director for the Society of Professional Journalists in Greencastle, Ind., from 1994 to 1997 after joining the organization in 1991 as its Marketing and Development Director. During that time, he managed a staff of 15 and a $1.6-million budget for the nation’s largest not-for-profit journalism organization. His tenure focused largely on external relations, fueling growth that doubled the net worth of the foundation and association. He also improved relations with SPJ’s 250 local chapters and national volunteer leaders and negotiated contracts and corporate partnerships. Prior to joining SPJ, Christopher was an Account Executive at WWWV-FM in Charlottesville, Va., from 1988-90. In that capacity, he designed and managed station promotions, including partnerships with the athletics program at the University of Virginia. He also was part of the “Page Program” at NBC in New York in 1988 where he served as a research analyst, assisting the Manager of Sports Programming and Market Analysis in research of television sports. BACK-TO-BACK MAC CHAMPIONS 139 ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF JANNA BLAIS ASSOCIATE AD/SWA Janna Blais is in her eighth year as BGSU’s Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator. She is the sport coordinator for eight of BG’s 18 intercollegiate sport programs (women’s basketball, ice hockey, volleyball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and women’s swimming & diving), and is responsible for the administration of the athletic training program and student-athlete services office. Blais is an integral part of maintaining progress on BGSU’s Minority Opportunities and Gender Equity Plans. She serves as the advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is in her third year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Softball Committee. Blais came to BGSU after serving for three years as the Assistant A.D. for Institutional Compliance/SWA at the University of Hartford. In that position, she established and managed the complete compliance program for the athletic department including interpreting NCAA legislation, maintaining NCAA squad lists, serving as the liaison with the NCAA Clearinghouse, and maintaining compliance with Division I and America East rules and regulations. Additionally, Blais was responsible for the operation of seven sports (men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, and softball) while coordinating the National Letter of Intent program and maintaining the $2.4 million athletic scholarship budget in her position as the senior woman administrator. A native of Lakeville, Mass., Blais earned her undergraduate degree in sports medicine/athletic training in 1993 from the University of Connecticut where she played softball. She served as captain as a senior helping them to a fifth-place finish in the Women’s College World Series. In her final two seasons, she was named ECAC Player of the Year while earning All-America honors. Blais later earned her NATA certification in athletic training in 1995 and in 1996 earned her master’s degree from Connecticut in sport management. Blais and her husband, Michael, reside in Bowling Green with their two sons, 3-year old son Brady, and newborn son, Jace. DR. LEE MESERVE FACULTY ATHLETIC REPRESENTATIVE Dr. Lee Meserve is in his ninth year of serving as BGSU’s Faculty Athletic Representative. A native of Hollis, Maine, Dr. Meserve began his teaching career at BGSU in 1973 after receiving his Ph.D. at Rutgers University and working at Vassar College. Over the last 34 years at BGSU, he has served as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor and distinguished teaching professor of biological sciences. In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Meserve has reviewed manuscripts for textbooks in endocrinology, general biology, human biology and human anatomy and physiology. He has also been a reviewer for Choice Magazine, Journal of Gerontology, Life Science and the Ohio Journal of Science. Dr. Meserve received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1966 in animal sciences, and his doctorate degree from Rutgers in 1972 in zoology. He holds membership in numerous honor societies including Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Phi Omega. In 1990, he was the recipient of the Hollis A. Moore University Service Award. Two years later, he was honored with the BGSU Master Teacher Award. Dr. Meserve was also the recipient of the BGSU Distinguished Teaching Professorship in 1993, received the BGSU Honorary Alumnus Award in 1997 and was given the BGSU President’s Advising Award in 2001. He also has memberships in many professional organizations, including the American Institute of Biological Sciences, Endocrine Society, the Ohio Academy of Science and the Society for Neuroscience, as well as the National Association of Advisors for Health Professions. A long-time volunteer at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, Meserve served as volunteer chairman for the LPGA event in 2006. Dr. Meserve and his wife, Marge, reside in Bowling Green. SHERI QUIROGA ADMIN. ASST. Sheri Quiroga is in her eighth season in the athletic department, assisting the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the volleyball team, in their dayto-day operations. Bre Detrick ...............................5388 BACK-TO-BACK MAC CHAMPIONS STUDENT-ATHLETE WELLNESS Dr. Richard Barker Dr. Randy Trimpey Dr. Tom Wojciechowski Dr. Richard Barker, a Bowling Green native, is one of the physicians available to aid the Falcon athletic programs. Dr. Barker completed his undergraduate degree at BGSU in 1969. He completed his medical degree, as well as postgraduate orthopaedic residency training, at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Since 1978, Dr. Barker has enjoyed a general orthopaedic practice in Bowling Green, including trauma, total joint replacements, arthroscopy and sports medicine. He has been team physician and orthopaedic consultant since returning to Bowling Green in 1978. Dr. Barker is a member of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Barker and his wife Holly, a teacher, have three children. He has held numerous offices at Wood County Hospital, including chief-of-staff and President of the Wood County Medical Society. Dr. Randy Trimpey is a recent addition to the BGSU Sports Medicine Team. Prior to working with Falcon athletics, Dr. Trimpey trained in sports medicine at Sports Care in Toledo, where he worked with the University of Toledo athletics, Storm hockey and Bedford High School sports. He received his medical education at Medical College of Ohio (1997-2001) and Flower Hostpital Family Practice Residency Program in Sylvania (2001-03). Dr. Trimpey was a varsity wrestler at Ohio Northern University where he performed his undergraduate studies. Currently, he practices family medicine and sports medicine at Bowling Green Clinic. He resides in Bowling Green with his wife, Chris, and three daughters, Meagan, Hailey and Samantha. A fixture around the Falcon athletic program for many years is team physician Dr. Tom Wojciechowski. “Doc Wojo,” as he is known around the program, received a B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Toledo in 1967, and his M.D. from Wayne State University. He did his residency from 1975-78 at Toledo Hospital before entering into private practice in Bowling Green. Dr. Wojciechowski received his American Board of Family Practice Board Certification in 1979. He has been a member of the Wood County Medical Society, the Ohio State Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Association. He is presently a Physician Consultant for Portage Home for Mentally Retarded. His past activities include Physician Consultant to the Wood County Cancer Society, Secretary of Medical Staff and Physician Consultant on Alcoholism. He also was a Charter Member of the Wood County American Diabetic Association as well as serving as a member of the OSMA Residency Affairs Committee. He and his wife are the parents of four children (Tom Jr. and Ed, who are also M.D.’s, Stacey and Lisa) and reside in Bowling Green. BOWLING GREEN FALCONS • 2006-07 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Dr. Jeffrey Noftz is an assistant professor in both the Physician Assistant Program and the Physical Therapy Program at BGU. He was assistant professor in Orthopaedics and Family Practice prior to accepting a position at The Bowling Green Clinic, specializing in non-operative musculoskeletal pathology and family practice. Prior to coming to Bowling Green, he was the director of Primary Care Sports Medicine within the department of orthopaedics. He served as the team physician Dr. Jeffrey Noftz for Toledo Public Schools athletics, Owens Community College athletics, Toledo Ballet, Toledo Ice Diggers and Toledo Cherokee hockey clubs. Dr. Noftz completed his residency at the Medical College of Ohio Department of Family Practice and served as chief resident and team physician for Toledo Central Catholic High School during his residency. Dr. Noftz graduated from medical school and physical therapy school from MCO. He received top graduate honors from BGSU upon completion of physical therapy school. Dr. Noftz and his wife, Renee, have a daughter, Jordan.
