The students in the Unit have gained credits and made great progress in their learning this year. As always the students worked hard to create a magnificent spread of goodies for morning tea. They used letters and words as the theme. The party is a way to thank parents, school staff and community agencies and members who all support our students to achieve their goals. After much discussion we have also decided to change our name from Special Education Unit to Totara Learning Centre or TLS Selwyn for short. Sheryll Ofner took great delight in unveiling the new plaque. Selwyn Tennis Champions 2012 The play offs for cups for our Tennis Champions were held recently. It is wonderful to see tennis back so strongly at Selwyn again. Thank you to parent James Hoskins for his enthusiasm and management of this sport and to Malcolm Ali and Brad Waelen. The following students are our champions for 2012. Congratulations to: Junior Boys: Timmoy Llanes Junior Girls: Alice Hoskins Intermediate Boys: Mahdi Hossaini Intermediate Girls: Ayesha Horley Senior Boys: Taneroa Emery Senior Girls: Nita Rakovica Selwyn Snowboarding Sports Team Trip to Mt Ruapehu After many weeks of training at Snowplanet, the Selwyn Snow Sports team finally got to experience real snow during the Term 3 break! The team travelled to Mt Ruapehu and spent two fabulous days skiing and snowboarding on the Turoa Ski Field. During this weekend, the team managed to try out new jumps on the terrain park (along with the teachers!), practise their carving from the top of the mountain, as well as learning about valuable mountain safety skills. The Snow team were lucky to have beautiful weather and fresh powder on both days – we couldn’t have asked for more! The last supper was at Volcano Pizza in Raetihi (owned by a former Selwyn College student!), where we had amazing 18” pizzas and warmed up with a hot chocolate. A big thanks to teachers – Natasha Bagley, Carol Du, and adult volunteer Chris Blom – for making this trip possible. The Selwyn Snow Sports trip has been extremely successful and we will be looking forward to expanding the team over the next years. We will be recruiting new students next year for the team and will be entering selected students into the North Island Secondary Schools Skiing and Snowboarding Competition, so keep an eye out for it.
