Annual
Report 2014
A Letter from the President
Dear Supporters,
2014 was an extremely good year for Hedge Funds Care/Help For Children. We distributed close to
$4 million in 110 grants to prevent and treat child abuse. And we know, given our numbers from
previous years, those grants will touch at least 50,000 individuals. That is a lot of children and families who, without the services these grants provide, would have been left without the resources to
prevent child abuse from occurring or to heal from its pain when it does.
And we at HFC know that this amazing amount of support for real child welfare would not have
been possible without you. It is you, our partner hedge funds, service providers to the hedge funds,
and those of you in the broader alternative investment community and beyond, who make it possible for us to address our Mission of positively addressing child abuse. Without you there would be
no HFC.
2014 also saw the realization of expansion begun in 2013: the addition of our new affiliate, Hedge
Funds Care Ireland. And what an inaugural event they planned and executed in Dublin last May!
And soon after the event the very first HFC Ireland grants were made and services supported to
begin the HFC prevention and treatment effort there.
As we look forward to next year I want to acknowledge a big change at HFC. Dr. Kathryn Conroy,
our Executive Director and CEO of the last 7 years will be retiring at the end of June 2015. She
started with Rob Davis, our founder, back in 1998 and became our executive ten years later. Under
her leadership we weathered the financial storm of 2008/2009, expanded our name, and added two
new affiliates, Ireland and Hong Kong.
And it’s time to welcome our new ED/CEO, Renee Skolaski. She also comes from an extensive child
welfare background and has significant management experience. We are very enthusiastic about
her joining HFC and have every confidence she will lead us forward building on the fine foundation
that has been laid. Please join me in welcoming Renee.
We are very much looking forward to next year. With your support more money will be raised and
better and better services will be made available for very vulnerable children and their families.
And all this is possible because of you.
Thank you so much.
Dean Backer
President, Global Board
A Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Supporters, Friends and Colleagues,
As our President, Dean Backer pointed out, 2014 was a good year for HFC and thus a good year
for children and families at risk of, or struggling with, child abuse. As the only operating charity
that solely addresses child abuse, and commits all of its funds to grants to other organizations to
do the work of preventing and treating it, our $4 million contribution to that effort is exceedingly
important.
This is my last Annual Report for HFC. I am retiring from full time work at the end of June 2015.
I am delighted that the new ED/CEO will be Renee Skolaski who I have known for years. She is
steeped in child welfare and has the commitment and skills necessary to only make HFC stronger
and better.
It has been my privilege to be the ED/CEO at Help For Children/Hedge Funds Care for the past 7
years and the New York Academic Consultant for the previous 10. It has been a profound experience
working with such a dedicated and knowledgeable Board, committed and skilled staff, and seeing
first-hand what our grantees accomplish. These 17 years add up to a considerable amount of work
on behalf of the most vulnerable and at-risk children and families. Of that I am extremely proud.
I know that HFC will continue to deepen and grow over the coming years. And that is only because
of the support you give. Thank you so much.
Very best regards,
Dr. Kathryn Conroy
Executive Director/CEO
WHAT IS CHILD ABUSE?
Child abuse and neglect is a
parent or caretaker of a child
literally not taking care of them.
This can take the form of
physical or sexual abuse, failure
to perform an act for the child,
such as feeding and clothing
them, or failure to protect a
child from the abuse or
neglectful behavior of another.
IN THE UNITED STATES:

Blue Sky Bridge
The School-Based Prevention Education
Program at Blue Sky Bridge provides child abuse
prevention education to third grade students,
their caregivers, and teachers. After each
presentation to students, a staff member is
available in the hallway outside of the classroom
for children wanting to ask questions or wanting
to share their thoughts in private. During one
recent hallway consultation, a brave little girl
named Lucy told her secret. Someone close
to her and her family was harming her. Lucy
was embarrassed and scared, but the Blue Sky
Bridge class presentation gave her the courage
to share. Lucy’s teacher, who had also recently
participated in a Blue Sky Bridge child abuse
prevention presentation, helped ease Lucy’s
parents’ concerns when they anxiously reached
out to her about the investigation process. Blue
Sky Bridge was able to help Lucy and her family
navigate the investigation process and the maze
of support services, helping them start to heal
from the trauma.

The Hope in Your Home program at Advocates
for Children provides home-based services to
at-risk families and pregnant teens. Mary, a
client in the Hope in Your Home program, was
not adequately supervising her 3 and 5 year
old children. She used profanity in front of
her children, had food on the counter from
previous days, and cigarette ashes on the floor.
After becoming estranged from her boyfriend,
Mary found herself homeless, with no job,
and no way to provide for her children. Mary’s
parent educator helped her get into a shelter
where Mary was given daycare assistance for
her children while she searched for work.
She also continued her parenting sessions
every week. With more structure, Mary was
able to focus on herself and her children.
She started listening and talking to her kids,
spending quality time with them, and showing
them affection. By the end of the parenting
sessions, Mary had gotten a job and had
developed healthy, positive relationships with
her children.

The Family Defense Center
The Mother’s Defense Project at The Family
Defense Center provides legal services to mothers
and children who are wrongfully separated by
child protection authorities. Linda’s case began
when Chicago police responded to a tip and found
Linda in the middle of a bipolar manic episode in
her home. Linda was clutching her son, Tom, and
when the police tried to physically take him away
from her, Linda became agitated and the police
used a Taser on her to subdue her. Tom was taken
away from Linda and placed in the custody of
the Department of Children and Family Services
(DCFS). Linda was deemed unable to care for
Tom, even though she had never harmed Tom,
never intended to harm him, was vigilant in her
treatment efforts, and had safety plans in place.
The Family Defense Center helped Linda appeal
the findings against her and helped her begin the
process of reuniting with her son.

The Parks Inner Child Therapy (PICT) Pilot
program at Imara CIC is a new therapeutic
intervention for children and teenagers who
have been abused. Clara is a 15-year-old girl
who disclosed that she was sexually abused by
her stepfather. Clara’s mother did not believe
her and actively protected Clara’s stepfather so
that Clara had to go and live with her paternal
grandparents. The stepfather was not charged
due to insufficient evidence, although a hearing
concluded that he probably did abuse Clara and
that her mother had emotionally abused and
neglected her. By the time Clara started services
at Imara, she was struggling with her recovery.
Clara continued to self-harm and to experience
significant intrusive thoughts and voices. After
working with the Imara therapist, however, Clara
began to improve. She engaged extremely well
with the PICT, and at her most recent session,
Clara noted that she had not self-harmed for
several weeks. Clara is now committed to her
recovery and doing well.
