Selecting Glass
The birds in these patterns represent actual North American species.
The accompanying color samples offer a simple guide to what colors of
glass might be used for the various pieces. If you want your project to
have more complicated colors and plumages, consult a birding guide or
color photographs to help you choose streaky or multicolored glass that
matches what you see. Have fun!
Using the Patterns
The birds in this book are all relatively small and so the patterns will
work great used actual size. You can simply solder loops for hanging to
the circle’s edge. (You can also, of course, enlarge the patterns on a
copier to make the projects in a larger size.)
You can easily add surrounding pieces to the patterns to create
square or rectangular panels that incorporate the circular bird patterns
but have the dimensions you want.
Creating Eyes
Many of these patterns include eyes. To create the eyes, cut a small gap
in the glass along the appropriate edge and fill the gap with solder. Or
you can cut and foil a tiny piece of glass to fill in the gap. Another way
to create eyes is to paint them directly on the glass (using paints made
especially for glass). If you do this, make sure the glass is clean and dry
before you paint.
