4 keeping PACE • keeping Richard P. Jacoby, DPM Zimmermann Preserves the Human Connection by Cindy Zimmermann is a speaker, consultant, author, and patient of Dr. Jacoby’s practice. As a self-appointed advocate of the handwritten note, she has taken her passion for preserving handwritten communication to the next level. Q. What is your relationship with Dr. Jacoby? A. Dr. Jacoby was my father’s podiatrist. Q. How did Dr. Jacoby impact your father’s life? A. Dr. Jacoby added years to my father’s life, To share your own inspirational story about how the doctors at Valley Foot Surgeons helped you achieve your own dreams, please contact [email protected]. Q. Do you have a personal example of this? A. While recently talking to Dr. Jacoby, I mentioned the thankyou note I sent him after my father passed, as well as some expensive steaks my family sent to him. He still has the card, but couldn’t even recall the steaks! It just reaffirms my belief in the value of a handwritten note. If our forefathers were trying to write the Declaration of Independence with blackberries, touch pads, and laptops, we’d probably live in a very different world. Dr. Jacoby treated my dad when he was suffering from gangrene and severe arterial disease, and suggested he try Chelation, which successfully changes minerals in the body, among other things. He’s even doing that today in his practice with the use of laser therapy to treat neuropathy, pain, and other ailments. work with groups like the Girl Scouts of America and Boy Scouts of America, and am passionate about teaching them the value of a hand-written note. I see how significant hand-written letters are in the cycles of life. In our technologically savvy society, these types of notes are becoming less and less popular. A friend of mine lost her husband, and she searched to find a hand-written note, hoping to find something to cherish, even though he was never keen to writing. 1 North Scottsdale 8962 E. Surgical lasers use an intense beam of light to gently remove unwanted, damaged, or diseased cells without harming the surrounding healthy cells. While surgical lasers, or laser scalpels, are used to cut living tissue, therapeutic lasers are a non-surgical alternative to pain relief. All of the lasers used at the Extremity Health Center use the right amount of light and the correct wavelength to penetrate deep tissue, stimulating cellular activity and increasing blood flow instead of cutting tissue. This new, safe technology offers advanced pain relief and expedited healing times through a process known as photobiostimulation, where deep, penetrating photonic energy brings about profound physical WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW About Therapeutic Laser Treatments Laser Therapy Process: There are many lasers for many different conditions. Get the right diagnosis first Select the right laser and the right therapies for the right person Lasers therapy is customized for each condition Acute injuries require fewer treatments, while chronic conditions require more Therapeutic Laser Dosage: changes in the patient’s cellular chemistry. Class IV lasers work by flooding the tissues with photons, energizing damaged cells and increasing circulation to the painful area. This increases production of ATP (adenosinetriphosphate), producing a cascade of healing responses in the body to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and accelerate tissue healing time. Power output, wavelength, and time determine therapeutic laser dosage. Class IV lasers incorporate adjustable power settings up to 10 watts and multiple modes of operation, including continuous wave and pulse modes. Wavelength: The length of the light wave Frequency: The vibration of energy Power Density: The power output of a laser Spread Area: The diameter of the area treated at one time Penetration: The depth a laser beam will penetrate into the body, dependent on the type of laser and the frequency range it applies 8962 East Desert Cove Suite 115 Scottsdale, AZ 85260 Extremity Health Center READ THIS NEWSLETTER to learn about the new Extremity Health Center and the convenience of laser therapy! Toenail Fungus Warts Veins Class IV laser therapy kills the pathogens that cause toenail fungus in one 30-minute trip. Class IV laser therapy can remove a wide range of warts that are resistant to traditional therapies, without a high risk of scarring. Laser therapy can be used to remove a variety of veins, including facial veins, tiny leg veins, spider veins, varicose veins, angiomas, rosacea, and broken capillaries. »Clinical » studies have proven that laser treatment of resistant warts is successful where treatment with acids, cryogenics, chemical agents, or surgical excision have failed. »Laser » treatment is safe and non-surgical, targeting specific blood vessels without harming the surrounding tissue. »The » laser shines through the toenail to penetrate the fungus instantly. »Patients » experience no discomfort, and can walk out of the office with no side effects. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a mix of concentrated platelets and serum. It is created when blood from a vein is placed in a special centrifuge to concentrate platelets (usually 3–5 times their normal concentration). Healing depends on platelets, which are rich in growth factors and help form blood clots during injury. During the first week after injury, platelets coordinate a repair response by releasing various growth factors over time—such as stem cells and new blood vessels to ensure the body receives more blood to the injured area. In essence, PRP enhances the healing process. »Laser » therapy is a welcome alternative from other forms of treatment requiring drugs or surgery. »Scientific » studies show that laser treatment, coupled with good hygiene of the toes, produces promising longterm results. »Laser » energy is targeted on the vein to be removed, which is gently heated so the blood will clot. »Laser » wart removal is relatively painless, is safe for children, and is preferred by most patients. »The » vein collapses and seals, and the blood is reabsorbed by the body’s natural healing process. »The » laser light focuses on the tiny blood vessels that feed the wart near the dermis of the skin. »Dr. » Jacoby and Dr. Ledesma will design a treatment plan to fit your vein removal needs. »A » topical or local anesthesia may be administered. Breakthrough Study: Blood is drawn from the patient Blood is placed in the centrifuge to concentrate platelets Our Proprietary PRP + Laser Treatment Therapy PRP therapy includes blood components (red and white blood cells, plasma, and platelets) derived from the patient’s own blood and injected into the area of pain. PRP + Laser Therapy The Extremity Health Center is proud to announce its own proprietary model for integrating PRP with laser therapy, resulting in greater results in pain relief. Lasers used with stem cell therapy enhance platelet growth and speed healing. PRP + Laser Therapy is used for patients who want to: »Avoid » surgery »Improve » healing »Avoid » a joint replacement after surgery 3 Dr. Jacoby and Dr. Ledesma also treat several common skin, foot, and leg conditions using laser therapy. MLS Laser The MLS Laser offers a dual wavelength emission that best treats acute pain and offers both anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Treatments are personalized to each patient’s condition. This laser therapy is specifically aimed at the treatment of bone, muscle, and tendon conditions such as: »Treatment » of pain »Plantar » fasciitis and inflammation »Ulcers, » wounds, burns, »Fibromyalgia » and sores »Arthritis » keeping PACE Laser Therapy to Heal Common Conditions Dr. Richard Jacoby and Dr. Paul Ledesma use five different therapeutic lasers for treatment of various conditions at the Extremity Health Center. These are: »The » Fotona Laser »The » LCT-1000 »The » K-Laser »Proprietary » treatment of PRP + Laser Therapy »The » MLS Laser • Plasma Rich Platelets + Laser Light Therapy = New Nerve Growth PRP is prepared and ready for injection The doctors at the Extremity Health Center use PRP Therapy to take advantage of each patient’s own healing properties, enhancing the platelets’ healing proteins to increase tissue recovery. This emerging procedure is a variant on the body’s production of platelet cells to enhance the natural healing process. The technology was first used 20 years ago with cancer patients undergoing jaw reconstruction, and has since been used in various other fields of medicine. A small amount of blood is drawn from the patient and placed in a Cold freeze spray numbs the surface skin centrifuge for approximately 15 minutes to remove components that are not involved in healing, and to mix special medications into the solution. The study posits that PRP, followed by laser therapy, is a sound and effective combination for treating nerve injuries. The plasma-rich component is injected back into the patient’s body using a local anesthetic or conscious sedation. No foreign material is used in this procedure, which uses the patient’s own healing properties. A pilot study at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center in Israel examined the effects of treating spinal cord injuries by using laser light therapy on implanted embryonal nerve cells (stem cells, or plasma rich platelets [PRP]). After platelet injection, healing is enhanced with the use of laser therapy on the injection site. This treatment combination provides better results than single modalities. This study suggests that light therapy has an antiinflammatory effect on the injured spinal cord, thus providing a possible mechanism by which light therapy may result in axonal regeneration. The Results The Conclusions The use of implanted stem cells or PRP, paired with laser light therapy, can create new nerve growth. PRP is injected with ultrasound guidance Color doppler shows the platelets injection The injection is complete Laser light therapy is applied to the injection site Source: Transplantation of Embryonal Spinal Cord Nerve Cells Cultured on Biodegradable Microcarriers Followed by Low Power Laser Irradiation for the Treatment of Traumatic Paraplegia in Rats, Neurol Res. 2002 Jun; 24(4):355-60, Rochkind S, Shahar A, Amon M, Nevo Z, Department of Neurosurgery, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Israel
