Welcome to the Draycott Homeshare Carol Service. I would just like to
thank you all for supporting Draycott Homeshare and helping us to raise
the profile of this wonderful organisation which has the power to give
security and peace of mind at a time when it is greatly needed and
appreciated.
The world can be a lonely, frightening and inhospitable place if you are
living on your own. It can also be problematic and costly if you are a
student, young professional or living away from home for the first time,
especially in a new country. The simplicity of the Draycott Homeshare
concept is to provide accommodation in exchange for an agreed level of
companionship and practical support to help manage the home.
Essentially we bring two people together who have a great deal to offer
each other in meeting their different needs.
Draycott Homeshare provides a positive solution for people who want to
remain independent, stay in their own home and continue to be part of
their community of neighbours and friends for as long as possible. For the
Homesharer it provides an affordable home in return for a little time, help
and companionship. For the Householder it provides peace of mind for
them and for their families.

St Luke's
The church was built in 1824 and is the biggest and tallest parish church in
London, its Gothic grandeur is emphasised by its spacious setting. It is
unusual in London in being visible from every side. A landmark in the
history of the Gothic Revival, this tall, elegant church was built to house
the growing population, which was rapidly becoming too large for the
original parish church on the Chelsea embankment, now known as Chelsea
Old Church. St Luke's architectural grandeur should not belie the pivotal
role it plays in the community, lying opposite the Royal Brompton Hospital
and just a few minutes walk from the busy King's Road. Even for those
people who do not visit the church, it stands as an enduring symbol of the
power of faith. The church is open daily.

Heartfelt thanks
Desdemona Ndanga Desdemona was previously a homesharer with the
household of George Melly. Of Homeshare she says “When I approached
Homeshare I was far from home, lonely and feeling a little lost. I was
homeless and staying in a hostel where I was sharing a room with 6
complete strangers. Homeshare matched me with a family . They gave me
a warm safe place to live and a family that cared for me and held my hand
through some very tough times. Now five years later we are still a part of
each other's lives and I wouldn't have it any other way”.
Lynda Bellingham Lynda’s 40 year career includes many memorable theatre
performances and a catalogue of successful roles in popular TV series including
All creatures Great and Small, Second Thoughts, At Home with the Braithwaites
and of course, as the long-suffering mum in the Oxo TV ads. Lynda starred in
Calendar Girls for a year and in January will be touring with them again, she is
also a regular presenter in Loose Women.
Nickolas Grace is best known for his roles on television - including
Anthony Blanche in Brideshead Revisited and the Sheriff of Nottingham in
Robin of Sherwood. Grace made his theatrical debut in weekly rep in
Frinton-on-Sea in 1969, and appeared in Trevor Peacock's Erb later that
year. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1972, and in 1973
played Aumerle in Richard II which transferred to Broadway. Back at the
RSC he appeared as Dromio of Ephesus in Trevor Nunn's first ever musical,
The Comedy of Errors, with Judi Dench, Michael Williams and Roger Rees,
Hitler in Schweik and Witwoud in The Way of the World and played
Hamlet for the opening of Derby Playhouse. He filmed Brideshead
Revisited from 1979 to 1981, and following the success of that programme
played Richard II at the Young Vic and Mozart in Amadeus at Her Majesty's
Theatre in 1982. He then began working in operetta, playing Koko in The
Mikado and Joseph Porter in HMS Pinafore for Sadler's Wells Opera in
repertoire. The film Heat and Dust followed in 1983. Other theatre
includes Jenkins' Ear, Bernstein's Candide, The Mystery of Irma Vep, Cole
Porter in A Swell Party and Ken Russell's production of Princess Ida for
ENO at the Coliseum. These are just a few of Nickolas’s many roles – an
actor constantly working and in demand.
Emma Munro-Wilson trained at the Italia Conti in the City of London and
thereafter won a place to study Musical Theatre at The Arts Educational
School. The breadth and depth of Emma’s career has led her to headline for ‘The
Rock Legends’ Tour of South Africa. Recent career highlights include her role as
the principle singer on Cunard’s Queen Mary II and a finalist in the BBC Radio 2
Voice of Musical Theatre competition. Emma formed her own Jazz Quartet in
2007. “Early one evening passing through the fine rooms of Burlington House,
The Royal Academy of Arts, I was slightly startled in a pleasurable way by the
sound emanating from an adjacent room of a woman’s sparkling voice singing a
jazz standard. It was a most marvelous, mellifluous sound that I hoped would
continue. It turned out to be the melodious and rhythmic voice of Emma Munro

Wilson, singing with the accompaniment of a few musicians and I cannot
recommend this rare musical experience highly enough.” Professor
Maurice Cockrill RA The Keeper of the Royal Academy of Arts. Emma has
just returned from Monte Carlo doing a gig for Tim Rice singing with Lea
Mead. She sings every Friday night at The Goring Hotel and is available
with her Quartet or Trio for private functions.

Jonathon Leonard Director of Music began his musical training in Bristol
where he was Organ Scholar at the Cathedral. When he was 17 he was
awarded the Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music for Organ
Performance. He studied music at Durham University, specialising in
baroque performance practice and early 20th century opera. He was
Organ Scholar of University College, conducted the University Chamber
choir. During his time at Durham he gained the Fellowship of the Royal
College of Organists having won the Sawyer, Durrant and Samuel Baker
prizes for ARCO. As a recitalist he has performed in cathedrals throughout
the country, broadcast for the BBC and performs regularly as a continuo
player. He is currently Director of Music at St Luke’s Church, Chelsea
where he has been instrumental in expanding the repertoire and activities
of the choir and has established a prestigious concert series.
Benjamin Frost Assistant Director of Music was Organ Scholar at Exeter
Cathedral, studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and
trained as a repetiteur at the National Opera Studio. He has worked with
the BBC, Lesley Garrett, Nelly Miricioiu, Marianne Cornetti, Sally
Matthews, English National Opera, European Chamber Opera, The Opera
Group, Opera Circus, Opera Omnibus, First Act International Opera, Floral
Opera, and Opera Mint and has accompanied the London Symphony
Chorus, the London Philharmonic Chorus and the BBC Singers. He is
currently working as a freelance repetiteur, recently performing in Bake
for One Hour with English National Opera, and is also Assistant Director of
Music at St. Luke's, Chelsea. He has recently been appointed Interim
Assistant Chorus Master at English National Opera. He has also appeared
on In Tune for Radio 3 and Operatunity for Channel 4. He will be Assistant
Conductor for Tamerlano with Opera by Definition next spring. Current
projects include The Enchanted Pig by Jonathan Dove.
Michael Peluso trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama on the BA
Hons Acting For Stage. He finished in June and is now represented by Jeremy
Conway of ConwayVangelderGrant. Previous work includes a feature film
called ‘Nine’ released Christmas 2009, Eastenders, Twelfth Night, various
adverts, a feature film called ‘Don’t go breaking my heart’ released in 1998
and from January 2010 Michael will start touring in Calendar Girls in the role
of the photographer. Michael became involved with Draycott Homeshare
through Angela Hamlin who is a dear friend of his mother Lynda Bellingham.
He believes it to be a wonderful cause which deserves as much help and
recognition as possible and hopes that you enjoy the evening.

What a surprise - four calling birds arrived this morning. They are very sweet,
even if they do call rather loudly - they make telephoning impossible. But I expect
they'll calm down when they get used to their new home. Anyway, I'm very
grateful - of course I am.

Dearest Edward
The postman has just delivered five most beautiful gold rings, one for each finger,
and all fitting perfectly. A really lovely present - lovelier in a way than birds,
which do take rather a lot of looking after. The four that arrived yesterday are
still making a terrible row, and I'm afraid none of us got much sleep last night.
Mummy says she wants us to use the rings to 'wring' their necks - she's only
joking, I think; though I know what she means. But I love the rings. Bless you

Whatever I expected to find when I opened the front door this morning, it

certainly wasn't six socking great geese laying eggs all over the doorstep.
Frankly, I rather hoped you had stopped sending me birds - we have no room
for them and they have already ruined the croquet lawn. I know you meant
well, but – let's call a halt, shall we?

I thought I said no more birds; but this morning I woke up to find no less than
seven swans all trying to get into our tiny goldfish pond. I'd rather not think
what happened to the goldfish. The whole house seems to be full of birds - to
say nothing of what they leave behind them. Please, please STOP

Frankly, I think I prefer the birds. What am I to do with eight milkmaids - AND
their cows? Is this some kind of a joke? If so, I'm afraid I don't find it very
amusing.

Look here Edward, this has gone far enough. You say you're sending me nine
ladies dancing; all I can say is that judging from the way they dance, they're
certainly not ladies. The village just isn't accustomed to seeing a regiment of
shameless hussies with nothing on but their lipstick cavorting round the green and its Mummy and I who get blamed. If you value our friendship - which I do
less and less - kindly stop this ridiculous behaviour at once.

As I write this letter, ten disgusting old men are prancing about all over what
used to be the garden - before the geese and the swans and the cows got at it;
and several of them, I notice, are taking inexcusable liberties with the
milkmaids. Meanwhile the neighbours are trying to have us evicted. I shall
never speak to you again.

4th January
This is the last straw. You know I detest bagpipes. The place has now become
something between a menagerie and a madhouse and a man from the Council
has just declared it unfit for habitation. At least Mummy has been spared this
last outrage; they took her away yesterday afternoon in an ambulance.
I hope you're satisfied.

Our client, Miss Emily Wilbraham, instructs me to inform you that with the
arrival on her premises a half-past seven this morning of the entire percussion
section of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

and several of their friends she has no course left open to her but to seek an
injunction to prevent your importuning her further. I am making arrangements
for the return of much assorted livestock.

I tried to ignore my digestion’s loud rattle
(For three Peperami put up quite a battle)
And that’s when I heard them – the sleigh bells a-jingling.
They shouted instructions that set my scalp tingling -

“Come Rudolph, come Romeo, come Posh Spice, keep prancing –
Come Matt & Alesha, come Brucie, come dancing.
Come Biggins, Capello, Wayne Rooney, don’t slack –
Graham Norton – keep up at the back!”
I heard their hooves clatter and scrabble for grip
(For our roof is quite steep and it’s easy to slip).
I heard Santa alight and I heard my heart beating
For then I remembered – we have central heating!
The flue–pipe is tiny – he hasn’t a hope
But surely he’s magic – of course – he can cope.
He’ll squeeze down the chimney – he has – that’s the noise
Of a very small man with a sack of toys.
He’s got to the boiler – I heard a small cough
Poor Santa – I hope that the gas is turned off.
Go back, Santa Claus – it’s not too late to jump
Oh no! I can hear him – he’s caught in the pump.
He’s off on the circuit, through all of the rads –
The hall, then Sam’s bedroom and then Mum and Dad’s.
He’s going through mine now – I heard a small clank!
It’s the towel rail next, and then the hot water tank.
Then back to the boiler –now gasping for breath –
He can’t have survived. What a horrible death.
Hush, listen! – Exactly, there isn’t a sound –
Poor Father Christmas has definitely drowned.
How shocking! No stockings, no gifts anymore
No presents for me, or for Kevin next door.
The kids of the world will be simply appalled
And blame us, for having the heating installed.
My brain in a fury, I had a small weep
And, pale and confused, must have fallen asleep.
I woke to the sound of the pipe’s early knocking
Remembered the horrors, then noticed my stocking.
The varicose sides and the end-of-toe tumour
That speaks of the Rolos, the Twix, the satsuma!
I cried “ Santa lives – it was only a dream!”
(The heating cheered too with a small hiss of steam!)
What a nightmare – but my fault. I must have been barmy,
Last thing at night to eat three Peperami.
