RoR Step-by-Step Review 20130902* Miami Vice Ferrari Testarosa 1:25 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-4264 Review The car that followed the faux Daytona Spyder in the hit TV show “Miami Vice” was the very well designed Ferrari Testarosa. From what I’ve learned Ferrari had the Testarosa specially painted white just for the night scenes in the television show. For the Modeler: This is the Revell Motor Sports Series “Miami Vice” Ferrari Testarosa in 1/25 scale. It is a skill level 2 Model. It contains 96 pieces, is molded in white, chrome, and clear parts, and has soft black vinyl tires. This kit (#85-5251) features. It also includes illustrated directions and waterslide decals. Finished dimensions are: Length: 7-5/16", Width: 3-1/2", Height: 1-7/8." Covered in this Review: If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; alternate assembly sequence suggestions for fit and ease of finishing; paint and adhesive selections and applications; cleaning up flash; part orientation; directional tire identification; engine detailing and blackwash; dealing with warpage; engine and frame alignment; test fitting; suspension construction and detailing; handling delicate parts: contest model considerations; body panel fitment and assembly sequence; detailing realistic turn signals; adding highlights to the interior; identifying and repairing seam lines and decal preparation and application; are all fully examined in this pictorial 15 page, full-color Stepby-Step review. Unless stated differently; Testors Model Cement (Tube Glue) was used for construction of this kit, and the small parts were brush painted with enamels, however the Clear Red and the Turn Signal Amber are acrylic model paints. Figure 1001 and Figure 1002 The engine top is glued to the engine bottom then the transmission cover is glued to both engine halves. The right and left engine sides are glued to the engine bottom. The engine assembly is then painted Testors Aluminum. The right and left rocker covers are painted Testors Gloss Red with a part painted Testors Flat Black before they are glued to the engine top and engine bottom. Figure 1015 and Figure 1016 In Step 6 the engine is glued into the lower rear frame assembly. The half shafts are painted Testors Flat Black (Rubber Boots) and Testors Aluminum (Shaft) before it gets glued on both sides of the engine and both wheel hubs. Figure 1017 and Figure 1018 The muffler is assembled by gluing the left side tank, right side tank, and muffler back to the muffler front. This assembly is then painted Testors Aluminum. After the paint is dried it is glued to the lower rear frame assembly. Figure 1019 The left catalytic converter and the right catalytic converters are painted Testors Aluminum. They are then glued to the exhaust manifolds and the muffler assembly. If you’re building this model for a contest, there is a seam here (blue arrows) and a sink (red circle) that should be addressed prior to paint. The right and left body side panels are glued into the door areas of the body. The overhead console is glued to the ceiling of the body. Figure 1025 and Figure 1026 The cover, engine cover, hinge retainer, and hinge are spray painted Testors Primer Grey and then spray painted Model Master Bright White. The center brake light is painted Model Master Clear Red. The engine cover is detailed with Model Master Semi Gloss Black and then the cover is glued into position. The center brake light is glued to the cover with Testors Clear Window Cement. Without using glue the hinge is installed onto the engine cover and then the hinge retainer is glued to the engine cover trapping the hinge in place. Figure 1027 The right and left windshield wipers are painted Testors Flat Black and then glued to the windshield with Testors Clear Window Cement. The right and left turn signal gets partially painted Model Master Turn Signal Amber. Figure 1028 and Figure 1029 The turn signal lenses are glued to the front of the body with Testors Clear Window Cement. I painted the area where the lenses go Testors Silver to add realism to the lenses. The tail light section and the license plate section on the body are painted Model Master Semi Gloss Black. The horse on the tail light section is painted Testors Silver. The tail lights are painted Model Master Turn Signal Amber and Model Master Clear Red. The tail lights are glued to the interior rear of the body with Testors Clear Window Cement. Figure 1030 and Figure 1031 The tires are directional so attention needs to be paid on the tread of the tires to distinguish between the left tires and right tires. The tread is the same on all four tires so when assembling the tires how the outer wheels and inner wheels get snapped into the tires determines left and right tires. Figure 1032 The right door panel, left door panel, seats, and interior are painted Testors Flat Tan. The steering column, dashboard, and steering wheel are painted Model Master Semi Gloss Black. Figure 1033 Decals; 1, 2, and 3 are applied to the dashboard and then Decal 4 is applied to the steering wheel. Figure 1034 and Figure 1035 The right and left door panels are glued to the interior. The shifter and seats are glued to the interior. The rear window is glued to the back of the interior with Testors Clear Window Cement. The steering column is glued to the dashboard and then the steering wheel is glued to the steering column. The dashboard assembly is then installed into the interior assembly. To add realism around the shifter, shifter handle and the exterior of the interior dish are painted Model Master Semi Gloss Black. Figure 1036 After the interior is completed the interior, chassis and body gets assembled. I found it easier to glue the interior dish to the chassis in its correct position then slid gently and cautiously the body onto the chassis. Without gluing the interior bucket into place the assembly can be very difficult. Figure 1037The engine cover seems to have warped or there is something twisting the engine cover. After looking over the car I found the engine bay was crooked so after straightening up the engine the hood fit properly. The exhaust tips are glued to the muffler assembly. The license plate is painted Model Master Semi Gloss Black then glued to the back of the body. Figure 1038 The left mirror housing and the right mirror housing are spray painted Testors Primer Grey then spray painted Model Master Bright White. The two mirrors are glued into the mirror housings before the mirror assemblies are glued to the model’s doors. Figure 1039 Decal 10 is applied to the engine cover and decal 16 was applied for the license plate. Sadly once the car is assembled the taillights cannot be seen so any detail work done on them is hidden. Figure 1040 The 5 liter DOHC 12 cylinder really looks awesome. I used a piece of gold sprue to prop open the deck lid on the left side to see the engine. Figure 0999 Even with the difficult parts of assembly I really enjoyed building this kit. Revell did a really good job in replicating the Ferrari Testarosa. I would definitely build this kit again. Well it is time to go down to the local dinner and show off this sweet ride. Right On Replicas, LLC ©2013 All rights reserved. *All registered trademarks are the property of their respective brands.
