Famous Iranian Personalities in USA

T h e W a t e r ’ s F o o t f a l l , is a truly amazing poem written by a well known Persian poet Sohrab
Sepehri. T his poet’ s poem is a true ind ic ation of the artistic way of putting W estern and E astern type
of poetry on the paper. Sepehri was born in K ashan on 1 9 2 8 . H e was a well ed uc ated person who
lov ed art and poetry f rom the young age. H e grad uated f rom high sc hool and began his stud ies at the
F ac ulty of F ine A rts at T ehran U niv ersity.
Sepehri is known around the world , in the east and the west f or his remarkable work. H e trav eled the
world f rom I ran to I nd ia, E ngland , F ranc e, B razil, J apan and U SA j ust to name a f ew. H e held
ind iv id ual ex hibitions in galleries and international painting f estiv als were he got lots of prizes and
earned spec ial d egrees. H e published six poetry books in his short lif e whic h was the hard work of
putting lif e, nature, lov e, heav en and hell into d iv ine word s.
Sepehri’ s poems hav e a uniq ue f orm of struc ture and style. H is poems are
struc tured in f ree v erse. I n W ater’ s F ootf all he starts writing about when
he was a teenage boy to when he was head ing toward s d eath. H e talks
about lif e being a pleasant c ustom and d eath not being the “ end of a
pigeon” . H e c learly ind ic ated that lif e was pleasant and enj oyable f or him
and d eath won’ t make any d if f erenc e to it. H e tells us that d eath might be
the end of us in this world , but this d eath is a new beginning. H e mentions
“ D eath goes in the mouth with a bunc h of grapes. I think it means d eath
is not bitter in reality it is as sweet as grapes. H e uses the f ruit metaphor,
the grape. G rape is the f ruit of heav en, it is the f ruit whic h makes the c lean
and holly wine.
I t is not v ery d if f ic ult to imagine the plac e that he was while he wrote
this poem or other ones. I c an imagine him seating d own und er a tree
somewhere nic e and q uite and writing this poem. Some resourc es
say the Sepehri gav e this q uote, he says: “ F or a poet to write a perf ec t
poem he need s the f ollowing: H e need s something to write with and
something to write on. H e then need s to be in nature away f rom
tec hnology and its reliability. H e was v ery ex ac t and the emotiv e
language f orms this poem. T here are lots of similes used in his
poems whic h make a better und erstand ing than ex plaining it in
word s f or instanc e “ d eath sometimes pic ks basils” this part points
out that d eath d oesn’ t nec essary c hase you all the time. H e says “ T he
lungs of pleasure are f illed with the ox ygen of d eath” this part means
that ox ygen is a great thing bec ause we breathe it in to surv iv e, but
it c ould also be sev ere and d angerous bec ause we are reliable on it
theref ore without ox ygen we would d ie. “ D eath sings in the larynx
of the red throat” these all spec if y that d eath is with us all the time
we c an’ t esc ape or run away f rom it.

H e c ommunic ates well with
his read ers through his
emotion and ex perienc es.
H e brings lots of word s

of some word s that c an’ t be translated not only to E nglish but
to the other languages. M ost of Sepehri’ s poems d on’ t
nec essary mean the same thing that is written. Sometimes
you hav e to translate it in your way so you c an hav e a better
und erstand ing of the poem.
I t is v ery engaging to und erstand the poet’ s personality and
his way of thinking throughout the poem. F or instanc e one
line he talks about lif e and a line af ter he talks about d eath.
O ne line he talks about horses being noble animals and one
line af ter he talks about people keeping v ultures as their pets.
I t might seem a bit wired but his poems are prof essionally set.
H e liked to rev eal his good and bad times through his poems.
I n some of his other poems he is j ust not und erstand able at all.
I t is sometime hard to pic k up his styles and meanings unless
we get d eep to his poem’ s style and meaning.

Silenc e in Fiv e Ac ts

T h e h o u se
was hushed and the woman,
asleep; d reaming? D reaming of a panther rac ing
af ter her c ar through the green mead ows of
A f ric a. O r maybe d reaming of an airplane c rash.
O r of lov emaking in the d ark of a c hilly c av e.
W as she sleeping, or f eigning it, listening to the
tic king of the c loc k, reminisc ent of the f ootsteps
of a man.
She c ould hate him, or lov e him. She c ould
worry ov er his c oming home, or ov er his not
c oming bac k. She c ould lov e him and hate him at
the same time. She c ould be d reaming of him, or
she c ould be d reaming of herself f eigning sleep,
waiting f or him.
T he house was hushed and the woman asleep.
T here wasn’ t any man there, and no man was
going to be there. N ev er had been, nev er would be.
She was who she was, but she thought that without
a man in her lif e, being a woman was meaningless.
B ut she was there, asleep, and she was d reaming.
D reaming of d ying, of d eath, of a man’ s d eath.
She was d reaming the male of a spec ies of spid ers
or sc orpions whic h would be eaten by the f emale.
She was d reaming and f eeling the taste of human
f lesh und er her teeth, and on the length of her
tongue; f eeling the hard , and at the same time,
sweet meat of the man who was also sleeping.
T he house was hushed and the woman asleep.
A nother woman was also asleep, in another plac e:
the woman she lov ed . T he woman she wished to
hold in her arms. She wished f or the house to be
not so d eep in silenc e, but f illed with the woman’ s
moans. She imagined her being asleep and , in her
mind , she took of f the woman’ s d ress. She
c aressed her all ov er, took of f her own d ress and
still touc hed her and c aressed her, her mind
j ammed with long and short shrieks.
T he house was hushed , the woman asleep.
M aybe not. M aybe the man she lov ed had killed
her in a moment of mad ness and sunk the house
into silenc e. M aybe the woman killed the man,
and lay on his bod y, trying to sleep d eeply so he
remains in his eternal sleep. M aybe the man she
still lov ed was in her arms; maybe she had yet to
kill him.
T he house was hushed , the woman asleep, but
maybe asleep in another man’ s arms, not her own
husband . M aybe that was why they were both
d ead . M aybe the woman was d ead bec ause the
wif e of the man she was in bed with sud d enly
walked in. O r maybe she d reamt it all and this
d ream was the seq uel to the d ream about the c av e
and the panther. M aybe a man had arriv ed and
killed her f or no reason. She d reamt of being d ead ,
and at times, d reamt of being a R agged y A nn d oll.
She saw in her d ream that the man was satisf ied
by her d eath, satisf ied with the c otton balls f rom
her insid es f illing the whole of the room.
T he house was hushed , but there wasn’ t a woman
to be asleep and not a man, either. T he house was
empty. T he bed was d isturbed , the c losets messed
up and j umbled c lothes all ov er the plac e, books
piled on the f loor, f lowers withered . T here was no
man, and no woman. T he house was empty, there
was only silenc e. . .
