illage Antiques & Ethnic, as
the name suggests, started
with antiques collected from
villages in Rajasthan. As supplies dwindled, Mahaveer
Jain moved on to manufacture reproductions of antiques.
Quite a few years ago, the unit was manufacturing
furniture of every shape and size but it stopped doing
that and concentrated on a single kind of furniture.
Jodhpur, of course, is known for solid furniture and
even in this category there are several design concepts.
The unit decided to concentrate on straight line, solid
furniture for valid reasons. First, it is easier to adhere
to quality; second, it is good to achieve economies of
scale and, finally, it is much simpler to build volumes.
Earlier, Mahaveer Jain’s products had buyers in a
single destination: the USA. Now, however, the unit
has entered markets in South Africa, Gulf countries
and the Far East.

of craftsmanship. Be
it paintings on cloth, on paper, on wall or carvings on wood or marble, Indian handicrafts
has it all. One such hub that houses some
exquisite wooden handicrafts is Jodhpur.
Jodhpur is one of the oldest stronghold
craft pockets popular for creating wood and
wooden handicrafts. The industry has an
inherent skill, potential and techniques that
often results in some splendid masterpieces.
Handicrafts produced in Jodhpur are exported
to different parts of the world, mainly Europe
and USA. It has been estimated that the
handicrafts export from Jodhpur is more than
Rs 1,000 crore. The city is often frequented by
foreigners in search for some exclusive artwork
or many a times they get an art piece created
as per their specifications.
Leading in production of wooden handicrafts, a sad fact remains that even in the prevailing modern era of technology; manufacturing of many handicrafts in Jodhpur is done
manually. Due to use of old techniques, quality and fast production cannot be ensured.

process, which not only makes the entire exercise quite tedious but is also very time consuming.
It is sad to note that despite the vast
potential that exists in this craft pocket,
exports are not increasing at a faster pace.
Analysed on the basis of a study conducted, it
was stated that the reasons for slow growth of
exports is lack of technological up-gradation
due to which some products become inferior in
price and incompetent as compared to the
wooden handicrafts from Indonesia, Thailand,
China etc.
Exports of wooden handicrafts from
India contribute majorly to the economy of
the country - more than 32 per cent. However,

there still lies immense potential in the world
market for the Indian wooden handicrafts,
especially the antique furniture of Jodhpur,
which is most preferred among the overseas
buyers.
Since modern machinery and technology
is kept at bay, due to various constrains of
quality, such as cutting, joining, planning and
moulding, wooden handicrafts from Jodhpur
are often technologically inferior in comparison to the handicrafts of other countries such
as China, Indonesia, Thailand, etc. The Indian
handicrafts industry lacks technical expertise
and institutional support required in the
wooden handicraft sector as the latest plant,
machinery, equipment and accessories
required for production of handicrafts is neither demonstrated nor available.
Realising this shortcoming of Indian
handicrafts industry and with an objective to
address these issues while providing complete
technological facelift to the Jodhpur Wooden
Handicrafts Industry, EPCH, with the assistance of Ministry of Commerce and Industry,
Government of India and O/o Development
Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has set up a Common Facility Centre in Jodhpur.
In its endeavour to set up a Common
Facility Centre in Jodhpur, a financial proposal was submitted by EPCH and subsequent
presentation were made before the Empowered Committee which approved the setting up
of the Common Facility Centre. As part of
this initiative, a land measuring 1,492 sq mt
was procured by EPCH at Plot No. SPL-1,
Basni Indl Area, Phase-I, Jodhpur. Up next, a
building has been constructed for setting up of
the centre and the procurement of machines
has also been completed. The machines that
will be used in the Common Facility Centre in
Jodhpur have been imported from Spain, Germany, Italy, Taiwan etc. The Centre has already
started imparting common facility services to
the exporters from Jodhpur.
The Common Facility Centre in Jodhpur
has been planned along the lines of a similar
centre in Saharanpur, which too was set up by
the EPCH. Saharanpur, which is often
referred to as the ‘wood city of India’ is today
a known name in the world handicrafts market, thanks to EPCH, who envisaged an ambitious plan of setting up of Common Facility
Centre with the latest technology in Saharanpur and has only looked forward since then.
The Pilot Project comprises setting up of photo and picture framing technology (photo
frame is 4th largest selling product category in
any of the stores world over). Based on the
feedback a complete Technology Up-Gradation Centre was set up with the advance technology and machinery.
The major machineries deployed in the
Commom Facility Centre includes Pressure
Cutting Machine, Outer Shaper, Inner Shaper,
Joinery for Frames, Four Side Planner, nock

Jodhpur: An oasis in Thar

Jodhpur is the second largest city in
Rajasthan. Amidst the sand dunes and thorny
vegetation of Thar Desert, the ‘Sun City’ has
traditional colourful lifestyle, festivity and
affable people that make visiting the city an
unforgettable experience.
Situated in the fringe of the Thar Desert,
Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a
chief of Rajput clan known as Rathores. The
old city is still surrounded by a ten km long
wall, built about a century after Jodhpur was
founded.
This imperial city echoes with tales of
antiquity in the emptiness of the desert. The
graceful palaces, forts and temples strewn
throughout are the glimpse of historic
grandeur of this city. Adding a romantic aura
to Jodhpur, are its exquisite handicrafts, folk
dance and music and the brightly attired
people. Scene of walking women here and
there in lovely and multihued ghagra-choli and
men in colourful turbans gives an illusion as
there is an year round celebration of colour
and chroma.
Located on the foothill of a sandstone
hillock, the city of Jodhpur seems like an oasis
in the vast desert. There are host of tourist
attractions in Jodhpur, enchanting the

tourists. These tourist spots stand as a living
proof of the splendour, traditions and culture
of the Jodhpur. The glorious past of Jodhpur
is personified through the various forts,
palaces and monuments.
The most magnificent fort in Jodhpur,
Mehrangarh Fort, is one of the largest forts in
Rajasthan. There are seven gates that have to
be crossed to reach the fort. A number of
attractions to see are within the fort like
palaces, galleries, a museum and temples. To
the left of the Mehrangarh Fort complex is
the Jaswant Thada of Jodhpur — an example
of architectural brilliance. It is a white marble
memorial, built out of intricately carved
sheets of marble.
One of the fascinating palaces of Jodhpur
is the Umaid Bhavan palace. Maharaja Umaid
Singh constructed it in 20th century. A part of
the palace has now been converted into a heritage hotel and a museum. Use of special type
of sandstone — Chittar sandstone, gives it a
special appearance. Umaid Bhavan palace of
Jodhpur is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic
architecture. There is also the Throne Room
with its exquisite Ramayana murals, a library,
a private museum, an indoor swimming pool,
a Billiards Room, tennis courts and unique
marble squash courts.
Not only, rocky forts and palaces are
spread in the city but colourful parks and
azure lakes also beguile the visitors. There are
quite a few beautiful gardens for the purpose
of sightseeing, like Mandore Garden and
Umed Garden. The rocky terrain and the
cenotaphs of Jodhpur rulers make these gardens attractive. In Mandore Garden there is
the hall of heroes which is dedicated to various deities and Rajput folk heroes. The statues of the deities and heroes we are carved out
of rock and painted in bright colours. Umed
Garden has lush green lawns with beautiful
roses and other seasoned flowers. The garden
is known for the mesmerising nature's beauty
in which it exists.
The tranquillity of the water leads mind
to the calmness and if you are in Jodhpur, you
have so much to get a sense of composure and
serenity after spending some time near Balsammand Lake, Kaylana Lake and Sardar
Samand Lake.These lakes are a virtual treat
to the eye. Near Balsammand Lake stands the
Balsammand Palace, an artistic eight-pillared
palace with three entrance gates. All around
the lake are lush green gardens. An artificial
cascading waterfall brings water from the
reservoir to the gardens. This lake offers a
breathtaking view of the sunset. At that time
the sky looks like a canvas splashed with spectacular colors. Kaylana Lake is the perfect
place to relax. Also known by the name of
Pratap Sagar, the area around this lake was
once full of wild bears. The scenery of this
lake is fascinating. Sardar Samand Lake
attracts countless varieties of migratory birds;
so if you are a bird watcher, this is the place
to roam. Also enchanted by its placid waters
are tourists who come to enjoy peace and solitude of the place.
The Jodhpur museums in Rajasthan,
India are reminiscent of the history of Jodhpur, especially the royalty of the past. Also,
displayed in the museums, are the samples of
the art and craft of the region and some other

around Jodhpur. These places have also their
own history of glory. Mandore, Guda Bishnoi
Village, Ossian Jodhpur, Jaswant Sagar Dam,
Pali City Jodhpur, Nimaj, Nagaur City, Sojat
City, Machia Safari Park Jodhpur are
the sights worth visiting during a tour of
Jodhpur.
Glimpse of colourful life is clearly seen in
fares and festivals here. The festivals express
the rich culture and traditions of Jodhpur.
Marwar festival, Nagaur fair and Jodhpur
international Desert Kite festival are most
talked about and popular festivals in Jodhpur.
Nagaur Fair is almost the second biggest fair

Jodhpur has lots to offer in cuisines right from

One should not forget to try the famous
kachouri (a snack eaten with chutney),
laddoos, which simply melt in the mouth and a
glass of buttermilk or lassi. A number of Indian delicacies have also originated in Jodhpur.
Makhaniya lassi, mava kachori, pyaaz kachori,
hot and spicy mirchi-bada and panchkuta are
the names of some of them. Jodhpur is also

Jodhpur climate is of an extreme type, with
the variations in temperature range being very

How to Reach Jodhpur
By Air: The Jodhpur Airport is five km from
the city centre. Regular flight services connect the city with other major cities in and
around Rajasthan. There are daily flights to
Delhi, Mumbai, Udaipur and Jaipur.
By Train: Jodhpur is well connected by railroute. Trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and
Kolkata are easily available. The 'Palace on

By Road: Another convenient mode of transportation to Jodhpur is by road. The main
highway between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer is
via Agoli and Pokaran. The highway is well
connected with Agra, Ahmedabad, Ajmer,
Delhi, Jaipur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur by bus.

There is so much to see and do in Rajasthan
that a tourist would be at his wit’s end to find
out where to begin. There are forts with tons of
history, havelis with exquisite paintings, bird
sanctuaries, culture and cuisine.

he battle cry piercing
the stillness, clanging of
swords, soldiers making
frenetic attempts to
climb the battlements,
thud of cannon balls
and sounds of hooves of galloping horses —
that was Rajasthan of yore. There was splendour, opulent living, magnificent palaces, large
forts and fierce battles. If you think there was

blood and gore only, think again. The rulers
were also patrons of art — unique Rajasthani
culture and cuisine were flourished under
them.
The palaces were embellished, elaborate
stucco work and frescoes adorned the walls,
waterfalls or fountains kept the courtyards
cool in native ingenuity, ubiquitous sheesh
mahal, or large room adorned with mirrors,
held prime spot in most of the palaces and
least of all were exquisitely-crafted jewellery
that the rulers displayed.
The history of Rajasthan is replete with
valour, a few inescapable internecine wars,
and a lot of individual heroic deeds. The forts,
palaces and monuments are past and on this
past the foundation of present tourism has
been laid. Today, Rajasthan is
a hot and haute destination in the world
of tourism.
First-time visitors have one question:
Where to start in this land of splendour and
awe? Is it “golden triangle” circuit or a
Jaipur-Ajmer-Pushkar circuit? To be frank,
every corner of Rajasthan is a start point. It
is often said that every sand dune in the Thar
Desert has history written all over it; so have
the forts and palaces.
A tour of Rajasthan does not start, or
end, with Jaipur, Jodhpur or Udaipur. What
about Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, Jhalrapattan or
Shekhawati region that has a collection gigantic painted mansions, now popular as
Shekhawati art!
Jaipur, the Pink City, is sine qua non on a
Rajathan tour. Till the beginning of the 18th
Century, the royals lived inside Amber fort
and subjects scattered around in hamlets. It
was Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II who decided

to create a new habitat and was built under
the supervision of a young
architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya and completed by 1727. This city planned on grid pattern stands in stark contrast to the present
haphazard growth, in all directions, that is
called Jaipur.
Within the hustle-bustle of the Pink City
are several palaces, the stone observatory Jantar Mantar and picture postcard perfect Hawa
Mahal — the palace of wind, a five-storey
building having a façade of semi-octagonal
and delicately carved honeycomb windows.
Hawa Mahal was built for the women of the
royal household to watch, without being seen,
the life on the streets below or royal processions.
From the bazaar one can see the hillocks
to the north on which are perched massive
forts of Nahargarh and Amber (pronounced
Amer). The Kachchwaha dynasty that ruled
this region for almost a millennium, uninterrupted, migrated from central India or present
day Madhya Pradesh. Down the centuries as
the dynasty grew it splintered, as it naturally
happens, and the princes set various, but
smaller, kingdoms or principalities but
remained vassals to Jaipur’s Maharaja.
A short trip takes you to Amber fort,
located on a hill, a little lower than Nahargarh
fort. There are three ways of going up to the
fort: by foot, vehicle or ride an
elephant. The latter is a favourite mode for
foreign tourists, perhaps to experience the royal mode of travel before experiencing the royal
way of living within the ramparts. There is
undoubtedly plenty to see.
History buffs have plenty to savour within
the fort as well as in other forts that dot the
Rajasthan landscape. There is, however,
another kind of history one can go through in
the Shekhawati region, north of Jaipur. It is
not about the mustachioed kings on their
horses but business kings. Their names ring a
bell: Birla, Goenka, Jhunjhunwala, Kajaria,
Poddar, Saraf and many more have their origins in this sand-swept region. They have not
left any forts but massive havelis, or mansions,
decorated by frescoes within and outside. In
short, the havelis could best be described as
open air art galleries.
Start haveli-gazing from Sikar, about 115
km from Jaipur on NH 11, but be armed with
a good map and preferably with a guide.
Though the owners of many of these havelis
left generations ago in pursuit of lucrative
businesses, a number of these mansions are
still intact and the frescoes on the outer walls
have not faded. One guide proudly remarked
that these were painted with vegetable pigments and followed with a tongue in cheek
remark, before British Raj came up with synthetic paints!
Art connoisseurs would be delighted to see
the gradual transformation of traditional
themes of gods, heroes, epics and legends to
contemporary trains and cars, figures of
sahibs and memsahibs holding parasols with
dogs on leash. It is an indicator that as
decades passed by, interaction and association
with the British, the themes changed with the
changing times.
Look around: these massive mansions and
the frescoes flourished despite inhospitable,
semi-arid surroundings. If you travel in northern and western Rajasthan to a more formidable desert region it would amaze you. In fact,
a kingdom flourished in the midst of the
desert: Jaisalmer.
This magnificent fort comes into view till
one is at the foot of the hillock on which it is
perched. One is awed by this towering presence and as a traveller exclaimed, “Jaisalmer
is a place that should exist only in the imagination…The vision of Jaisalmer’s massive fort
thrusting heavenwards out of the barren landscape is unforgettable, and the magic doesn’t
diminish as you approach its walls and
bastions.”
This is a living fort unlike many others
that have become monuments in the true
sense. Present residents inside the fort claim
descent from forebears who arrived here in the
12th or 13th Centuries after the fort was completed in 1156 A.D. The wealth of rulers came
from the toll collected from camel caravans
carrying merchandise that crisscrossed the
Thar desert.
Opulent palaces and havelis are a manifestation of that wealth. Old palaces are within
the fort while havelis are located in the old
township. Do not miss Nathmalji ki haveli,
Patwon ki haveli and Salim Singh ki haveli. It
will not be an exaggeration to describe them
as symphonies in stone. Intricate carvings and
exquisite filigreed work all over are indeed
breathtaking.
Both for adventure seekers and laid-back
leisure travellers a few kilometres beyond
Jaisalmer, Sam is the destination point. An
hour’s drive to Sam, one would be staring at
the Sahara-like desert. The villagers of Sam
have suddenly realised the power of tourism
and many have turned into professional safari
cameleers. Even a half-a-day safari into the
vast, open, monochrome sand dunes is an
evocative way to sample the desert ambience.
Heard of beautiful queen Padmini of
Chittaurgarh? If the looks of Helen of Troy
could launch a thousand ships, then Padmini
attracted thousands of horse-borne soldiers.
Allauddin Khilji of the Delhi Sultanate was
infatuated by her beauty and when he could
not succeed in his desire to have Padmini as
his consort, he reacted by sacking the fort. In
the end Khilji and his army had to make a
long trek back to Delhi in utter dejection.
Chittaurgarh is one of the largest forts in
Rajasthan. In fact, inside the fort one can
drive through to visit many monuments.
Though some of the palaces within the fort
are in a dilapidated condition, the other monuments are still in good shape. Do climb Vijay
Stambh, a 37m tall and nine storeys high tower that offers a splendid view of the fort as
well as the town below.
Forts, forts and more forts! Is there any
thing to see beyond forts? Plenty. Visit the
world famous and now a World Heritage site
called Keoldeo Ghana National Park or
Pushkar, famously known for camel and
cattle fair.
Once a sleepy pilgrimage village with a
rare Brahma temple and the pious visiting it
during Karthik Poornima, it has blossomed
into an international destination during this
period. It is not so much the religious sentiments that bring in tourists but the camel fair
and the fanfare associated with it. Apart from
camel or camel cart rides, tourists truly experience and enjoy rustic ambience.
Siberian cranes, a rare and vanishing
species, make a long haul all the way to
Bharatpur’s bird sanctuary, Keoldeo Ghana
National Park. Winter is the season. There is
an artificial water body created to attract
ducks so that sahibs of the Raj era could
indulge in duck shoots. That intention aside,
today it has become unwittingly a World Heritage site!
While in Bharatpur a visit to Lohagarh,
or iron fort, is a rewarding experience, though
it does not match the grandeur of the other
forts of Rajasthan. Forts were protective ramparts that rulers had in turbulent times in the
past. There is plenty art to be seen within
these forts. The culture and cuisine evolves
through centuries and Rajasthan has plenty
to experience. A visit to Rajasthan is never
mundane and always exhilarating. January 2010
