For Christmas 2013, the Club again
asks for the community’s help in
sponsoring 100 of our lowest income
families for Christmas. You will learn
a little about your sponsored family
and receive a thank-you in January.
There are two ways you can sponsor a
family:
Do It Yourself: The Club can give
you the “wish” list of gifts, food and
decorations for the family. Then your
family or office group may get the
tree, decorations, dinner and purchase
and wrap the gifts yourselves. If you
wish, you can also deliver all of it
directly to the family. Office groups
and donor families find this to be a
bonding experience and a lot of fun!
Please contact Sara Gentry at the Club
(605-343-3500) as soon as possible but
before December 18 if you wish to do
this.
Let Us Do It: You can donate $300
for a family of four and the Club staff
and volunteers will buy and wrap the
gifts, purchase Christmas dinner and
get a Christmas tree and decorations
for the family. If $300 is too steep but
you’d like to participate, you can give
any amount and we will combine it
with other donations to sponsor a
family. Please write “Christmas
family” on your check and send it
to: Club For Boys, Christmas Families,
Attn: Sara Gentry, P.O. Box 907, Rapid
City, SD 57709. Please try to get these
donations to us before December 18 so
we have time to shop for the families.
Whichever way suits you best, know
that the Christmas families deeply
appreciate it.
is a real house on a main street in
Rapid City and you’ve probably
passed it many times. Inside this
house, there’s no furniture at all in
the living room or kitchen except a
rickety table and two folding chairs.
There are no toys on the floor, no
clothes lying around, nothing. And
yet nine children from the ages of 10
months to 12 years live in this house.
All of the boys above age six are
members of the Club for Boys.
The parents suffer from past
substance abuse and a current
inability to provide
financially for the
family. These nine
children pay the
price.
sparkle. A heap of gaily-wrapped
presents are under the tree.
Christmas dinner is cooking on
the stove and fills the house with
a delicious aroma. Imagine what it’s
like for these children to have all this
in their home.
Your gift to the Christmas family
program means the world to these
children and children like them who
have been disappointed time and
time again. Your gift to the Christmas family program uplifts them and
makes their whole year brighter.
545 Santas
Last year about 545 people in Rapid City
gave to the Christmas family program,
either as part of an office or family
group. Their efforts helped 100 families
of Club for Boys’ members---families
earning $400 per person per month or
less (Interestingly, the number of family
members helped was also about 545).
Rock Stars
By Ida Walter, Nutrition Director
With the sounds of the Beach Boys, the
Beatles , Bill Haley and the Comets and
other rock and roll greats melodically
drifting through the gym, the Club for
Boys held its annual Volunteer Banquet
on September 30. The rock and roll
theme was the backdrop to honoring 101
volunteers who are truly “Rock Stars”
with thousands of service hours at the
Club during the past year. Volunteers
may help on a daily basis in program or
two afternoons a week at the Thrift Store
or at a special event during the year.
The Club could not provide its range of
services without the time, talents and
dedication of our volunteers.
The President’s Volunteer Service
Award issued on behalf of the President
of the United States, was given to 15
dedicated volunteers. Recognizing the
best in the American spirit, the award
encourages all Americans to improve
their communities through volunteer
service and civic participation.
One volunteer,
Marilyn Mulz, received
the President’s Lifetime
Achievement Award,
which represents over
4,000 hours of service.
Marilyn came to the
Club in October of 2002 Our Volunteers Rock!
because she had
grandsons who attended the Club.
Most of her time has been spent in the
Club’s cafeteria where her efforts help
assure an accurate meal count of all the
boys who eat here. She also is a Club
bus monitor, riding with the bus driver
and helping maintain peace and order—
which can be a real challenge—on the
bus. She is loved by the boys and is a
true grandmotherly influence in many
young lives.
The Club values all of its volunteers
and hopes to see you at the next
Volunteer Banquet!
Attention Alumni
If you can say, “I used to go to the Boys
Club,” then we want you!!! We want to have
as many former members as possible come
down to our 50th Anniversary Celebration on
November 23rd from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There
will be a lot of “old school” activities and fun. So, save the date, mark it on the calendar, tell
your friends, and make sure to be there!
Oh, the Things They Say
by Clay Quinton, Program Director
A six-year-old boy was waiting for his ride
and so I was talking to him about school. In
the conversation he told me that his teacher
was mean. When I asked him why she was
mean he gave me a funny look and said, “I
don’t know why she’s mean. You would have
to ask her.”
Congratulations, Marilyn!

Move to Benefit the Club
Exciting changes are in the works. After 24 years, The Thrift Store
benefiting the Club for Boys has moved to a new, larger facility at 960
Cambell Street. It is a change that will greatly improve our ability to help
the Club for Boys.
As one of the area’s first non-profit thrift stores, The Thrift Store quickly
became an essential element in funding the Club and has set an example
for other non-profit organizations. Our generous donors have allowed us to
build a brighter future by providing funding that gives recreation, meals,
guidance, job training and education to Club for Boys members.
Since opening in 1989, The Thrift Store’s dedicated, talented, and
knowledgeable volunteers and staff have created a clean, organized, friendly
and truly unique shopping experience. Now, in our new location, we will
continue that tradition as a destination for quality apparel, furniture, house
wares, and home décor. We look forward to welcoming current and new
donors and customers to The Thrift Store.
