Little Current Lions have benefited area for 75 years
W
hile the Little Current Lions assembled for one of
their final meetings before
Haweater Weekend, hammering out the work schedule and finalizing the list of
events, they can rest
assured knowing that the
community has benefited
from another year of good
works.
The members sit under
the roof of the Lions Pavilion, named in their honour
as the funds donated to the
municipality came from
their hard work, and which
will soon be all hustle and
bustle as ball teams vie for
‘A’ and ‘B’ supremacy on
Haweater Weekend.
The land on which the
Lions Pavilion sits, Low
Island Park, was also once
in the hands of the club
until it was gifted to the
charge of the municipality
for the price of $1. On the
south side of the park lies
Nolan Sisson Park, a multiuse area created for the
youth of this community
and which also received a
generous Lions Club donation as has, in the past, the
swimming docks which
were full of happy folks of
all ages, cooling down on a
hot summer night.
“The Lions Club was
started by a group of businessmen and has evolved
into a group of people who
enjoy doing good works,”
said President Steve Nunn
as he surveyed the happy
group.
Lion Steve recently took
over the president’s job
from Lion Bruce Burnett, a
role he’s held in the past
four different times in his
17 years as a Lion.
The president noted that
when he first joined the
club, fundraising was a far
easier task, but that it gets
harder and harder with
each passing year as more
groups emerge, all jockeying for the same few dollars.
But the Lions Club is an
important one to support,
he added. “People should
continue to support the
club’s endeavours as we
give a lot of money away
each year to benefit the people and groups in this community.” Lion Steve noted
that his greatest joy as a
Lion is not the large giveaways that get the club
press in the paper, but
rather the gifts that mean
so much to an individual

in need of a wheelchair.
Lion Steve said joining
the club is one of the best
decisions he has made, as
the friendships he has
forged will last a lifetime
and the sense of accomplishment he gets from
helping others just can’t be
beat.
“Someone once told me
that the Lions Club was like
a second tier of government after the municipality,” he commented. “I asked
them, ‘what do you mean?’
and they responded, ‘if the
town won’t pay for it the
club probably will!’” he
laughed, gesturing to the
pavilion.
Donations, large and
small, add up. Over the past
year the club has donated
upwards of $50,000 to individuals, the Manitoulin
Health Centre, seniors’ programs and various organizations and committees.
This money, he explained,
is thanks to the support of
individuals and businesses,
whether they purchase
Nevada tickets from K&T
Variety, attend the Hawfest,
sponsor Haweater Weekend
or put a hockey team in the
Winterfest hockey tourna-
ment. “And none of this
would be possible without
the dedicated members of
this Lions Club,” the president added.
Lion Steve noted his
predecessor, Lion Bruce,
and his hard work and commitment each year as
Haweater chair, joking
about the binder always at
Lion Bruce’s side known as
the ‘Haweater bible.’
“He’s carried it above
and beyond anyone’s expectation—it’s more than anyone ever imagined it would
be,” the president said.
“Haweater started as a
homecoming weekend with
a few hundred people and
now it boasts thousands of
people on the Sunday night.
I’m not sure that was ever
expected by that first
group.”
“In the year to come I
hope we have a successful
Haweater, Winterfest and
other small fundraisers
that helps the club along so
we can continue to donate
to worthy charities and the
people of this community,”
the president said of the
upcoming year.
“If it wasn’t for the dedicated Lions in the club this
weekend would never be

Cardboard boat race marks
10th anniversary this year
LITTLE CURRENT—How
time flies when you’re having fun! This Haweater
Weekend marks the 10th
annual cardboard boat race,
which is always a crowd
favourite for festivalgoers.
The cardboard boat race
anniversary coincides with
that of the MacMan Challenge, also in its 10th year,
as the event was started as a
fun way to get the community involved in the inaugural yacht race. Fun it was,
and as the MacMan was initially to be held every other
year in Little Current, the
asked if they could borrow
the event for its big weekend, which the Little Current Yacht Club gratefully
allowed, and there the boat
races have stayed, an integral part of the new
Haweater tradition.
“What makes the cardboard boat races so great is
that it really is an event for
all ages—something young
and old alike can do—from
the construction of the boat
to the actual race day,” said
Amanda Roy, part of Team
Cardboard.
“It’s so amazing to see the
shoreline at the Low Island
docks fill up with people
each year, eager to see the
hits and misses of the cardboard boat races,” added
Team Cardboard’s Alicia
McCutcheon.
One of the prizes, the
Titanic Award, goes to the
crew with the “most spectacular sinking,” the pair
explained. Fittingly, the
prize for this special award
is always a pair of lifejackets.
Four categories make up
the races: ages 8-11, 12-15, 16
plus and business. Last
year’s business winner was
the crew from Hayden’s
Meats, the trophy proudly
on display at this Little Current butcher shop. Hayden’s
Meats took the title from
long-time winners Tim’s
and Co. RONA, which
reused its sturdy vessel for
a number of years. Who
will take this year’s title?

Entry forms/rules can be
picked up at The Expositor
office or at K&T Variety and
must be filled out before
race day. Team Cardboard
reminds entrants that sonotubes are not allowed in the
competition, as they are not
technically
cardboard.
Cardboard
tubes
are
allowed, as long as they are
not waxed. The only materials allowed for construction
are corrugated cardboard,
duct tape and latex paint.
Decorations, however, are
encouraged, as long as they
do not enhance the structure/flotation of the boat.
Paddle blades must also be
only made of cardboard
and duct tape, but wood is
allowed for the shafts. A traditional boat design must
be followed as well—rafts
are a no go. For more information,

Meet this year’s Miss Manitoulin contestants

LITTLE CURRENT—After
a nine year hiatus, the Miss
Manitoulin pageant is back
for another Haweater Weekend. On Thursday, August
at 7 pm, the Manitoulin
Hotel and Conference Centre will host the pageant’s
highly anticipated return,
with seven Island girls competing to be crowned this
year’s Miss Manitoulin.

lineup this year is magician and ventriloquist John
Hopman who, he explained,
developed a love for magic
and ventriloquism at the
tender age of 6 while
watching Detroit Public
Television on a black and
white television. Sixty
years later, Mr. Hopman
has toured Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and most of the
western provinces with his
show.
"It's a fun clean show," he
explained. "It also incorporates audience participation," he added, noting that
one lucky audience member can expect to be turned
into a full-size ventriloquist’s 'dummy.'
Speaking of dummies,
the audience can also look
forward to meeting Mr.
Hopman's friends Leroy,
Crackers the duck, Boscoe
the bear and more.
"It's a good show for boys
and girls and the young and
young at heart," he added.

Roller Derby blasts onto Manitoulin for Haweater
Action, strategy the hallmarks of this fast sport
LITTLE
CURRENT—It
takes guts, determination
and a little bit of sass, but
those who play roller derby
say there’s nothing quite
like it.
Over the last decade, the
sport of flat-track roller
derby, which gained a following in the 1970s for its
televised bouts and stars
like Skinny Minnie Miller,
has gained in popularity to
become the fastest growing
women’s sport in the world.
And, on August 3, the
action will be coming to
Haweater Weekend.
Greater Sudbury Roller
Derby (GSRD) will play at
the Little Current Curling
Club on Saturday, August 3,
starting at 7 pm. Admission
to the bout (game) is free of
charge, but donations to the
Dragonfly Fund or the CTVLions Children’s Christmas
Telethon are greatly appreciated. All are welcome to
attend.
“This will be a great
chance for the family to
come out and see what
roller derby is all about,”
said GSRD president Crystal Larose. “It’s a fast sport
with lots of action and
great entertainment for
parents, kids, grandparents
and anyone who wants to
see something new.”
Fans of derby in the early
years who enjoyed the allout brawls of the televised
version may not recognize
today’s sport, which puts an
emphasis on athleticism
and strategy, and is governed by a strict set of rules
standardized by the World
Flat-Track Roller Derby
Association (WFTDA).
But the general premise
is the same: two teams of
five players each take to an
oval track, playing offence
and defence at the same
time, while a jammer from
each team tries to score
points. The team with the
most points at the end of
the game is the winner.
For many skaters, the
opportunity to make new
friends and excel at something new holds big appeal.
Before joining derby, few
skaters have had much
experience on skates. The
great thing about roller derby is that anyone can learn
it, and GSRD guides all its
new recruits through everything they need to know
about the sport, including
the rules of the game, strategy, and how to play safely.
“I joined derby to make
new friends, get involved in
the community and challenge myself to try something new,” said former
Expositor staffer Lindsay
Kelly, who’s been skating
for a year and a half. “The
sport is a lot of fun, and it’s
helped me find new
strength I didn’t know I
had.”
Roller derby is known for
its camaraderie amongst
skaters, and after a game,
it’s not uncommon to find
new friendships emerge
between players of opposing teams—the rivalry
always stays on the track.
GSRD also has a social
conscience. Formed with
the intention of giving back
to the community in a positive way, GSRD works in
support of the Dragonfly
Fund, a Sudbury-based
organization that offers
financial assistance to
those who are facing financial hardship after being
newly diagnosed with
breast cancer.
The skaters appear at
community events through
the year where they promote breast health, fitness
and friendship, while raising money for the fund. In
2013, the league will donate
50 percent of its ticket sales
to the fund. Last year, GSRD
