Your first choice in Switzerland - green Datacenter the biggest data
Your first choice
in Switzerland
Data center services
of the highest quality
If you want to get everything right from the outset, it is best to start
with green land. Our goal when planning the new greenDatacenter was to find
the right green land. Franz Grüter, CEO Green Datacenter AG
Your most important company
assets deserve the best location
A company’s data are among its most valuable assets. Before you transfer
such assets to a third party, it is essential to know precisely who they
are. While there are hundreds of individual requirements to consider, the
three main criteria for selecting a data center are:
The reliability of the location, in terms of infrastructure and from
a legal standpoint
The data center’s technical systems and environmental profile
The provider’s reputation
Green Datacenter endeavors to exceed customer expectations

in all
these areas. This is reflected in HP’s decision to locate its Europe-wide
cloud center in greenDatacenter Zurich West.
We carried out an unbiased evaluation before deciding in favor
of greenDatacenter Zurich West. We carefully analyzed the
infrastructure, electricity prices, line quality, and the minimum
and maximum distances to our mirror data center in the
greater Zurich area. The data center had a lot going in its favor,
above all the fact that it was built on green land using the
latest technology. Hauke Stars, Country General Manager, HP Schweiz
Swiss reliability, guaranteed
Switzerland is an outstanding location for data center operations.
Situated right in the center of Europe, Switzerland enjoys political stability,
a strong economy, firmly entrenched legislation, protections against
arbitrary governmental actions, and highly developed data protection
law. Swiss infrastructure meets the very highest standards in global
comparisons: power supply, public transport, and data transmission are
reliable and dependable. Education levels are high, and there is
a strong work ethic. Employees are usually multilingual and accustomed
to cultural diversity.
When it comes
to Switzerland
as a location,
‘cloud computing made and
performed in
Switzerland’ stands for genuine excellence in comparison
with international competitors. Security, stability, trust,
reliability, and professionalism make Switzerland the ideal
partner and location for – and supplier of – cloud solutions
and the associated enormous volumes of sensitive data and
applications that
are critical to a
company’s success.

Three key criteria:
location, systems, provider
Companies want their data center to be located a safe distance from
large urban centers, well away from the arrival and departure
routes of international airports and transport routes for dangerous
goods. Delay-free data transmission to and from the urban centers
of Zurich, Basel, Bern, Lucerne, and Zug has to be guaranteed.
Power supply and optimum connections to Switzerland’s high-speed
data network are also very important factors.
The Central Switzerland region meets all the aforementioned
requirements in an ideal manner. Moreover, in Central Switzerland
the risk of natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes
is very low. These outstanding advantages were among the r easons
behind the decision of US data security company AppRiver
to move its European headquarters to Lupfig and to locate its IT
infrastructure in greenDatacenter Zurich West.
We recently opened AppRiver AG, our headquarters for
Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in Lupfig to respond to the
growing demand for IT security solutions in the region.
We chose to partner with Green and operate our infrastructure
in greenDatacenter Zurich West because of the company’s
unwavering commitment to data security, customer privacy and
connectivity. What’s more, the data center is centrally located
for outstanding accessibility. Michael Murdoch, CEO AppRiver
Security without compromise
Because greenDatacenter Zurich West is a new building, we were able
to consider all desirable security measures from the outset. We
even went a step further and invited an experienced security expert
to supervise the entire construction process. Separate security
zones and separate personnel and goods control systems are just two
of the resulting security features. Exterior and interior surveillance
cameras and biometric entry checks are of a uniquely high standard
in Switzerland.
Power supply and Internet connection are supplied via separate,
redundant infrastructures. The data center has its own transformers
within the building, and diesel generators can provide at least
seven days of autonomous emergency power. These were among the
high-end features which convinced energy company Axpo to use
greenDatacenter Zurich West as its primary company data center.
Axpo Informatik AG provides the Axpo group with high-quality,
sustainable IT services. greenDatacenter Zurich West
is an essential part of this service contract and meets all our
requirements in terms of high levels of security, uptime,
and the environment. Robert Gebel, CEO Axpo Informatik AG
What international experts say
We feel it is important that the quality of greenDatacenter Zurich
West be independently certified and that customers be able to draw
on solid arguments when choosing us. We have therefore always
endeavored to exceed international standards in information security
and to obtain recognized certifications that reflect this.
To date, greenDatacenter Zurich West is the only data center in
Switzerland to have successfully completed the Uptime Institute’s
Tier III Design Certification. Our processes have received
international ISO 27001 certification from SQS and IQNet, thus
assuring the highest levels of information security. Working
in conjunction with a certification institution, customers’ compliance
with FINMA and ISAE 3402 can be assessed via audits. These are
among the reasons that make greenDatacenter Zurich West
an ideal commercial data center for banks, insurance companies,
and reinsurance companies. Saxo Bank, for example, uses
Zurich West as a mirror data center.
A highly available IT infrastructure based on state-of-the-art
technology is of vital importance to our business. This includes
data centers, and in Green Datacenter AG we have found an
operator who guarantees us reliability, uninterrupted uptime, and
flexibility at the highest technical and professional level. Ian Keates, COO Saxo Bank (Switzerland) AG
We are greenIT
As indicated by our name, we are heavily oriented to sustainability.
Within Switzerland, only Green is allowed to use the designation
“greenIT”. Having achieved a PUE factor of 1.4, greenDatacenter
Zurich West is one of Switzerland’s most energy-efficient data centers.
The measures we took to achieve this include the data center’s
energy-optimized archi-tecture and installation of the latest generation
of heat exchangers and air conditioners.
In future, waste heat will be used for the neighboring six-storey
InnovationTower office building to be completed in 2014. A large-scale
photovoltaic solar power plant will also be set up. In addition,
our customers can already choose to meet 100% of their electricity
requirements with power from Swiss hydroelectric stations.
AC, DC, or both?
At greenDatacenter Zurich West, ABB has installed a completely new
type of DC power distribution solution in addition to conventional
AC technology. AC power is centrally converted to 380 volts DC and
distributed in that form uniformly to end devices, thus eliminating
the need for conversion in separate network components. DC systems
are simpler in structure and require less space than conventional
power supply systems.
DC technology reduces conversion losses for the entire energy flow chain
by up to 20%, and as a result further improvements in overall efficiency
can be achieved.
As well as the new DC technology, greenDatacenter Zurich West
of course also has conventional AC distribution for running traditional
server systems.
For ABB, the leading-edge technology of greenDatacenter
Zurich West, its high environmental standards, and e xcellent
location make it the ideal reference location for DC solutions.
Working with Green Datacenter AG, we are able to demonstrate
the advantages of using DC technology in a data center. André Schärer, Global Marketing Unit Manager

We grow as you grow
Colocation in greenDatacenter Zurich West starts with a quarter rack and
includes power, cooling, cabling, and a fast Internet connection.
Customized housing is set up in separate data center areas with sizes
ranging from 30 to over 1,000 square meters (total usable area at
the data center: 10,000 square meters). The customer decides who should
have access and whether to expand.
To ensure uninterrupted operation even in exceptional situations,
we provide workstations and emergency workplaces right next
to the data center. These are equipped according to customers’ wishes
and requirements.
Green Datacenter:
your partner for the future
The green.ch group consists of two companies, green.ch AG and
Green Datacenter AG. green.ch AG is a successful Internet
service provider and web hosting provider that has been in operation
since 1995. Green Datacenter AG is a data center provider and
runs the data center business for the green.ch group. The group has
around 100,000 customers in total.
The green.ch group is a privately held business that pursues a
sustainable, long-term, infrastructure-based investment dividend
strategy.
Between 1995 and 2009, the company acquired and expanded
three data centers, which have since reached full capacity.
In 2011, Green Datacenter therefore set up Switzerland’s first freestanding data center used solely for commercial purposes
in Lupfig, Aargau, at a total project cost of over CHF 100 million.
