Elton opened with The Bitch is Back and closed his set with Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love to a standing ovation from black tie-clad festival-goers. Celebrities in the audience included David Furnish, David Walliams, Alan Titchmarsh and Sir Steve Redgrave. Among the headlining stars we were delighted to experience this year were Elvis Costello, Will Young and the delectable Dame Shirley Bassey. audience. He walked into and around the audience to pleasing and an upbeat take on the Nick Lowe-penned Understanding. The audience were in their element, snapping with their mobiles, singing and dancing. On Saturday we knew that it was going to be a truly appearance in nine years and she did not disappoint. Blake, her backing band for the evening, sang and chatted with the crowd prior to Dame Shirley joining them on stage. She opened with Goldfinger, and the atmosphere was transformed to the She blasted out The Lady is a Tramp, Diamonds are Forever and Wonderful backed by th of its strength. She was magnificent. For the encore Dame Shirley joined Blake in singing Anything You Can Do, followed by The Impossible Dream and finishing with Hey Jude. As magnificent fireworks exploded overhead we headed to the next adventure. The Pizza Express Live venue outside the main festival enclosure was another place to enjoy the music and later the silent disco beckoned. This year Henley performances from José Feliciano, Natalie Williams, Mick Taylor and Ben Waters, Eliane Correa and Shakatak. On Thursday they had a surprise performance by Will Light My Fire. Will then returned to take centre stage and bring the festival to a spectacular close on the Sunday. He was utterly charming with his audience, chatting about growing up nearby, joking about his dad in between singing some of his greatest which he performed while riding a sparkling silver mobility scooter. At one point he even got his enthusiastic audience singing happy birthday to one lucky festival goer. Henley Festival is well-known for its high-calibre, wacky, often surreal entertainment and eclectic art and this year there were treats for the senses at every turn. Cindy Burrowes spoke to two of the headline acts for this year’s event from August 19 to 21 Rewind back to the 80s The Rewind South festival now sells out quickly and has vastly extended camping fields, an array of specialist bars, and a wide selection of posh nosh. There is a dedicated Kidzone, the ever popular Silent Disco, Blitz DJ Rusty Egan and the New York Brass Band. The rather intriguing Inflatable Church invites festival goers to have their very own bizarre wedding, complete with all the trimmings, and 100 guests. And the weekend kicks off with the Friday Night Welcome Party with special guests the Wurzels. This year’s weekend line-up of 80s stars includes Rick Astley, Erasure’s Andy Bell, Tony Hadley, Lloyd Cole, Jimmy Somerville, Leo Sayer, Adam Ant, Marc Almond, the Beat and Glenn Gregory. Henley Life cover star Toyah Wilcox will perform on the Saturday. With more than 38 years in the business Toyah has moved from punk princess to high priestess of TV, but she remains a unique performer. She is known for being charismatic, outspoken and impossible to categorise with hits that include It’s a Mystery and I want to be free. As well as performing annual music tours Toyah is an acclaimed actress and composer. As an actress her most recent film is the award 8 HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 nominated thriller Aaaaaaaah! This year also sees the Rewind debut of Hazell Dean and the return of legendary singer/songwriter and producer Trevor Horn. HAZELL DEAN THE QUEEN OF Hi-NRG At 62 Hazell Dean is still the queen of Hi-NRG and although she had the reputation as the ‘Queen of British Clubs’ around the world, this is her first UK Rewind festival. She is slightly nervous about working with Rewind’s live band, but she is quite looking forward to her performance at Henley this year. “I guess I am because they are such huge audiences [at Rewind] and it’s just nice to ‘feel the love’ as they say, and it is so nostalgic. That is what makes it fun because you are transported back if you like,” said Hazell who plays at a variety of 80s gigs “I feel like I served my apprenticeship and paid my dues. I was singing with bands for 15 years before I had a hit record” around the country. Whys does she think the music of the 1980s is so enduring? “Well the 60s/70s have had their time, been done - you don’t get as many 60s nights as you do 80s now,” said Hazell. “The 80s was the last age of the pop era and a lot of the people out there doing it can sing.” Hazell herself began her musical career in the early 1970s as a singer and songwriter. “I feel like I served my apprenticeship and paid my dues – I was singing with bands for 15 years before I had a hit record,” she told me. “You have to keep chipping away and you can’t give up at the first hurdle – it is all down to hard work.” And Hazell’s hard work paid off in 1975 with a single on the Decca record label called Our Day Will Come. This was followed by Got you where I Want you which joined her debut single as a huge hit on the Northern Soul scene. And suddenly, having honed her stage presence and song delivery through the conventional route of gigging all over the country, Hazell found herself the Queen of HiNRG. This musical genre of uptempo disco or electronic dance music began in the 70s with songs such as Donna Summer’s anthem I feel Teenagers of the 1980s will remember the huge hit Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. The video features lead singer Trevor Horn complete with a bouncing head of curls and large sunglasses to accompany his digitised voice love. It is typified by a fast tempo, staccato rhythms, reverberated vocals and pulsating basslines. When she stepped on to the stage at the iconic gay club, Heaven, she had no idea just how popular her single, Searching had become – but the reception she received was electric. “Everything changed with that show. I went on at 2am, stepped on to the stage and they were going wild. And I loved it!” Hazell’s music has been a vital part of the Gay Scene’s soundtrack ever since. She is a regular on the stage at Pride events all over the UK and defiant about continuing in that vein, even after the attack that left 49 people dead at Orlando’s gay nightspot, Pulse, earlier in the summer. “I shall just go out there and do it – we will still go. I am not going to stop doing Pride because of that. There are more good people than bad and we have got to remember that. “ lead vocals with 70s prog rock supergroup Yes in place of John Anderson. “I was never as good a singer as John Anderson so I produced after that,” said the 67year-old whose producing success started at the tender age of 30. “Before that I played on stage six or seven nights a week all the way up in rock bands, dance bands and I sang a bit.” Now that he spends so much time in the studio (he has his own studio that he runs with his son) Trevor loves the chance to play live. “I don’t care if it is a bit of a train wreck but we like playing and we have a good time.” He is hoping for a surprise guest at this year’s rewind having brought on the Police’s drummer Stuart Copeland at one live gig recently. And in terms of the progression of the music industry what does Trevor think? “I think if there is anyway they can stop piracy it would be fantastic – the music business is not what it was. But you have some pretty major artists still – you can’t deny Ed Sheeran and Adele write really good songs that are interesting and fresh sounding, and perform them really well. “Ed Sheeran is adept at making a great noise with an acoustic guitar – the first since Dylan in the 60s.“ TREVOR HORN Teenagers of the 1980s will remember the huge hit Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. The video features lead singer Trevor Horn complete with a bouncing head of curls and large sunglasses to accompany his digitised voice. However, there is more to Trevor Horn than meets the eye. He is one of the most awarded producers on the planet and he has been dubbed ‘The Man who Invented the 80s’. “I have given up fighting that title, I think it’s so preposterous, it cracks me up – I was one of the first producers to mix techno and pop together so that was the sound of the 80s,” he laughs, selfdeprecatingly. The chart topping Video Killed the Radio Star is also well-remembered as the first ever music video to be shown on MTV in 1981. Trevor then produced some of the most iconic records of the 80s, including three of the biggest selling singles of not only that decade, but of UK chart history: Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? and Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Relax and Two Tribes. Trevor’s résumé can boast an eclectic line-up of Paul McCartney, Cher, Tina Turner, Gary Barlow, Belle and Sebastian, Kylie Minogue, John Legend, Lisa Stansfield, Marc Almond, Jeff Beck, David Jordan, Genesis, Tom Jones and Olly Murs. Now in his fifth decade as a record producer, he has recently enjoyed Top 20 albums with The Overtones, Spandau Ballet and long-term collaborator Seal. He is also known for taking the Opposite Hazell Dean and Adam Ant. Earlier this year HM the Queen opened the new Land of the Lions enclosure – which is five times the size of the previous one. And for six nights a week until December this year you can actually sleep cheek by jowl with these incredible creatures. It was an opportunity I simply couldn’t miss. I grew up being taken to London Zoo for an annual treat – my abiding memories are wonderment at the elephants, gorillas and monkeys, but an overall sadness at their incarceration in monolithic grey concrete. A little of the concrete is still there, but the zoo has changed immeasurably in other ways. My husband and I went to the zoo with great friends – so we met at the magnificent new Penguin Pool and spent a happy half hour enjoying the antics of these hilarious birds. Then we broached welcome drinks where we met our hosts for the stay and the rest of the group staying the night (about 20) – an eclectic mix of young and middle aged couples, elderly friends and work colleagues. As part of our first zoo tour we were shown the new lion enclosure. London Zoo has partnered with Gir National Park in Northwest India where the last Asiatic lions live in the wild. So the new enclosure is a recreation of an authentic Gir village, complete with barber shop and food stalls, bright colours and a carnival atmosphere. They were brilliant – we learned so much in such a short space of time The village weaves around the new enclosure and leads into the setting for the lion lodges. In the midst of this, almost imperceptively separated by glass windows, are the lions – a male and three females who were born at the zoo. Although I remember the lions at Windsor Safari Park (now Legoland) this was far more intimate in that you were close enough to engage with them, and hear their magnificent rumblings, through the glass. Right next to the playful lions are the lodges. 10 HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 They are bijoux, and perfectly formed with modern comforts, ensuite shower rooms, and an Indian theme running throughout. On a warm Summer’s evening, sitting on the little veranda, listening to the lions, flamingos and macaws, one could be transported to a tropical land. Until you hear the traffic around Regents Park – which is a bit surreal. Before we ate we went to feed the pigmy hippos and the warthogs with the rest of the group. Throughout we were guided by our hosts, who were young, articulate women with a background in either zoology or veterinary science. They were brilliant – we learned so much in such a short space of time. It was fascinating and great fun. With my long-standing, nagging worry about animals in captivity they very much put my mind at ease in explaining about the zoo’s breeding, educational and conservation programmes. Having the zoo to ourselves was a real privilege – and to watch the animals slow down for the evening as the last day visitors trooped off to the exits was a real thrill. By the time we were flinging carrots and turnips down to the warthogs I was ready to join them in their frantic scrabble for food. Dinner was in a lovely private room, around one long table. It was beautifully done and confirmed the joy of communal eating. We dined on a freshly cooked selection of dishes at a buffet followed by dessert and cheese. Wine and beer was not included but you could buy wine by the bottle. Although we four sat together we also interacted with our end of the table and had a very jolly meal. OUT & ABOUT Afterwards we took a twilight tour of the zoo and went to meet the aardvarks. I didn’t realize aardvarks were real – but I am very glad to have made their acquaintance now – along with the nocturnal porcupines. It was a strangely grounding and lifeaffirming time to be so few, with so many animals. We finished our night tour tip-toeing past the lions so as to not wake them – and holding our breaths to be so near, so personal, with these dramatic creatures. I am a sound sleeper so sadly missed a lot of the wonderful night time animal songs that my husband heard. However, the amorous flamingos heralded dawn with the wonderful, deep-throated mumbles of the lions just behind us. Quite a way to wake up after a good night’s sleep. Everyone was very chatty at breakfast, which was held in the zoo’s large and updated main restaurant/café – a far cry from the crumbyfloor, soggy sandwich scrum of years ago. And then there was the opportunity for an early morning wander around the zoo. In conclusion – this is a wonderful experience, for a great cause, and is suitable for all members of the family. Animal lovers will be thrilled and non-animal lovers will be enchanted, and then converted. The Gir Lion Lodge experience includes welcome drinks, a two course dinner, B+B and morning and evening zoo tours. There are nine lodges that can accommodate two adults and two children (aged five to 13.) Prices start at £378 per night. For more information www.zsl.org/girlionlodge Here, a typical lion lodge. It’s 177 years since Captain Edmund Gardiner proposed an annual regatta “under judicious and respectable management” at the Henley Town Hall. The Henley Royal Regatta is now the most famous in the world and the crowning glory of the British social calendar. We joined the rowing fraternity to embrace the activities on offer over the five days of this year’s event. Here is a look back at our highlights. The Leander Club did not disappoint with the usual suspects starting each day perusing the rowing schedule in their world famous pink ties and navy blazers with gold buttons. Leander chef, Scott MacRae’s acclaimed food was consumed in vast quantities for the traditional Leander lunch each day whose guests included a fair smattering of dignitaries, celebrities and famous athletes. Chateau Marmot The temporary dining option on the Thursday and Friday of this year’s Regatta was none other than the hugely successful pop-up dining experience Chateau Marmot. Henley Life’s Vivienne M Clark relives her afternoon spent at this novel Regatta experience. Founders, Theo Cooper and Danielle Treanor, have been making regular appearances in and around Henley for a number of years, but they have also taken the concept all around the UK, and beyond. They pride themselves in turning up at unexpected locations and delighting their many customers with the ‘pop-up’s’ enduring appeal. 12 HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 Case in point, Chinawhite returned to said bank of The Thames for the fourth year at Temple Island Meadows, Remenham Farm. Since opening the original club on Air Street in London, Chinawhite has been a regular haunt of world famous recording artists, models, movie stars and other celebrities as well as hosts to the enclosure at the Cartier International Polo for 11 years. The club has become so popular at Henley that this year it grew to include an exclusive VIP tent and garden, a pop-up boutique hosted by Taylor Morris and an enlarged riverview green space. More than 4,000 people visited the stunning venue, just yards from the start line at Temple Island. We sipped cocktails while we cheered on the country’s finest rowers and enjoyed a selection of gourmet street food. As the sun set into the beautiful English countryside the real party action kicked off with Saturday night’s headliner DJ Roger Sanchez taking to the stage. Drinks were served from the swanky bar – we particularly enjoyed the current drink of choice – Givinity Gin made in the UK. Then we danced into the night surrounded by glamorous revellers. Visitors are lured to Chateau Marmot by the Pop Up formula, and the frisson of excitement brought on by the element of surprise. The venue this time was Culden Faw Meadows near Toad Hall Garden Centre and it provided an alternative to the other, mainly corporate entertainment venues. The Chateau Marmot tent was buzzing with a relaxed party vibe. This special position, with uninterrupted views of the start of each HRR race, added to the feeling of exclusivity. The live musician was friendly and the professional waiting staff welcoming and fun. Chateau Marmot puts local food centrestage. We enjoyed a stunning four-course tasting menu made with the finest local and British produce. It was beautifully presented and combined mouth-watering flavours from across the seas. The innovative dishes included Gabriel Machin’s line-caught cod, apple & cucumber water, fennel, avocado, buckthorn oil and crisp. This was just for starters and was followed by my favourite dish: Bosley Patch heritage beetroot, ricotta, black cardamom honey, radish and hazelnuts. The culinary adventure continued with a delicious pork fillet and finished with a coconut and lime mousse. Acclaimed Chef Tim “Tonto” Yates was adept at fusing ingredients with exotic syrups and Asian-inspired elements. The superb food and drink, intimate atmosphere and stunning setting was an all-round winning combination. What was not to love about this highly recommended new addition to the Regatta? And the Leander Club was, as always, the place to be post-racing, as everyone gathered at their Riverside bar to discuss the day’s events on the water, with increasing levels of exuberant noise, in correlation to the amount of Pimm's consumed. So many ladies wore fabulous hats this year at Phyllis Court, which is set on the sprawling landscaped grounds alongside the River Thames. This elegant hotel and club in a grand Georgian-style mansion is the perfect spot to view the regatta. It’s a long-standing favourite with the locals who want to study the finishing line performances. Alternatively, family and friends sit together to enjoy the quintessentially English splendour – in a rather calmer atmosphere to that on the Berkshire Bank. HENLEY REGATTA EVENTS Fawley Court The Saturday of Henley Royal Regatta dawned bright with white scudding clouds and the hint of a shower, which only lasted a few minutes. Down at the beautifully restored local stately home of Fawley Court a wonderful celebration lunch was in full swing to raise funds for Sue Ryder Nettlebed Hospice. The owner of the magnificent riverside estate is Aida Dellal-Hersham and she is passionate about the work of the hospice nearby at Joyce Grove, Nettlebed. The 12-bed facility costs £3.1m per year to run for people aged 18 and over who are living with conditions like cancer, heart failure and lung disease. The range of care and support includes inpatient nursing and a seven-day community nursing service allowing people to stay at home and providing respite to carers. The specialist care teams work together to provide support for people and their families at the most difficult time of their lives. Although Sue Ryder expects to raise £800k in statutory funding this year, the remaining £2.3million needs to come from donations. By providing the magnificent fundraising Henley Regatta Lunch at the Fawley River Club, Aida and her team helped raise in excess of £40,000 in just a few hours. Around 80 people enjoyed a delicious lunch on the banks of the Thames, which included tuna carpaccio, roast duck and pommes Anna followed by isles flotantes with caramel. The stunning wrought iron structure rung with the laughter and chatter of people gathered to support this worthy cause. The charity auction alone helped to raise at least half the final amount for the day with lots that included a Land Rover drive experience day, a day’s hire of a 12-seater Edwardian class launch with skipper and four tickets with reserved seating to see Lord Heseltine at the tenth Henley Literary Festival. A hugely popular lot was two tickets for the Wales v England RBS Six National rugby match at Cardiff in 2017 with a World Cup ball and photograph signed by the Welsh national squad which went for £2,000 and was matched by Aida herself. It was donated by former Welsh rugby player Sean Legge who works for Aida at Fawley Court. Cindy Burrowes ditched the pasties for lunch to try Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen on Watergate Bay. When chef Jamie Oliver became a success, he decided he wanted to put something back into the community. In 2002 he founded the restaurant Fifteen, in East London. The aim was to get young people to believe in themselves and believe it is possible to create their own futures. Each year the flagship restaurant, and the subsequent ones in Amsterdam and Cornwall take on a group of unemployed, The seafood sharing plate did not have a under-qualified 18-24 year olds and trains ‘fritto misto’ in sight, but lobster claw, fried them to be qualified chefs. Leaving the oil in overnight allows for maximum absorbance and will leave your hair strong, soft and shiny. Tip: Coconut oil is an excellent natural sunscreen. Spray on for ultimate natural nourishing protection. Summer hair care While we may enjoy some Summer sunshine our hair certainly doesn’t. But with just a little extra attention our hair can thrive the summer months and can even get stronger and glossier, according to celebrity hairstylist, Asgar Saboo, whose clients include Cindy Crawford and Twiggy and Hollywood actress Eva Longoria. Here are his summer hair care tips… The Coconut Oil Mask The vitamins and essential fatty acids that are naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum that builds up from the hair follicles. Coconut oil also moisturises the hair which prevents hair breakage and slows down hair fallout whilst giving the hair shine and a healthy appearance. At the end of the day soak and The Caffeine Coffee Rinse Coffee is excellent for balancing pH for hair and is also really effective in stimulating your hair roots by improving its structure and growth. Apart from making the hair stronger and smoother, caffeine also gives your hair a natural sheen and make it more manageable. Pour pre-brewed cool coffee into dry hair and allow to sit on the hair for 20 minutes before cold rinsing and conditioning out. The Vitamin E Drench Vitamin E is extremely good for hair and has been an essential ingredient in body lotions, shampoos, and conditioners for years. Take it in a capsule to work from the inside out or mix vitamin E oil with coconut oil and apply it to your scalp for a luxury hair mask. The Cold Rinse A super steamy shower can be rough on your hair and can leave it coarse and dry. Rinsing with cold water helps to seal the cuticles and strengthen the hair, helping it grow longer and maintain its health. Trim The Ends Snipping your hair more often helps in faster hair growth and removes split ends. Regular styling makes your hair prone to split ends and damaged cuticles therefore trimming the lower portion of your hair every six to eight weeks ensures that the damage is minimum, and this promotes the growth of healthy hair. Lay Off The Heat High heat styling tools makes your hair look better for a second and worse for a lifetime afterwards. There are so many other options out there such as rag curls, rollers, braid waves. Allow your hair to air-dry as often as possible or select the cold settings when using a blow dryer. When using it on hot, keep the dryer a distance of at least six inches away from your scalp. Don’t Over Colour Hair Highlights or lowlights will have a direct impact on how healthy or unhealthy your hair will look. Over colouring causes dry split ends, lack of lustre, hair breakage and plays havoc with the overall health of the hair. Ultimately when you dye the hair you are destroying the first layer to change the colour within leaving nothing to protect the hair. Put the dye down to stop hair breakage. My therapist, Sophie, treated me to exfoliation, a superb back and neck massage, head massage selecting Sarphin products - creams and oils perfectly suited to my skin type to leave me a wilted mass of contentment. I barely made it to the relaxation suite I was so floppily chilled. Me and my guest were lucky enough to visit on a sunny day so we sat outside overlooking the beautiful grounds to enjoy a deliciously healthy salad lunch accompanied by a not so healthy, but very welcome, chilled glass of Sauvignon. So if you’ve no plans for jetting off this month, consider treating yourself to some serious pampering at Spa Illuminata at Danesfield House. HEALTH FOCUS Avoiding and dealing with tennis injuries With all the excitement and physical prowess of Wimbledon being played out just recently, many people will have caught the tennis bug and have taken up the sport or gone back on the courts, perhaps after several years away from them. Two thirds of tennis related injuries are caused by overuse due to lack of technique or physical training. Most overuse injuries affect the shoulders, wrists, and elbows. Here are a few tips to help avoid such injuries, however if you are unfortunate enough to sustain an injury we have dedicated orthopaedic consultants and a physiotherapy department to advise and offer treatment to help you get back to full fitness. Tennis Elbow Overuse of the muscles that extend the wrist backwards, such as when the tennis ball impacts with the racquet, can cause what is more commonly known as “tennis elbow”. To help avoid such injury ensure that you have the proper grip size on your racquet, that you strengthen the muscles around your wrist and that you have a proper routine to warm up. 18 HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 So if, like me, you enjoy being pampered, take some time out for yourself and head to Spa Illuminata it feel you are swimming in a lagoon, and a session in the steam room and hot tub, we moved on to the second treatment of the day, a Jessica pedicure. Bliss. This Mother and Daughter Day at £180 per person is just one of many days available here which start at just £80 for full use of the facilities and a two course lunch. You can add on treatments to personalise your visit. There’s also a fully equipped gym there and a fitness instructor at the spa should you feel energetic during your visit. But after my morning massage I had neither the inclination nor the energy to even put on my trainers. So if, like me, you enjoy being pampered, take some time out for yourself and head to Illuminata. Shoulder Injuries The shoulder is formed of a ball and socket joint. When this joint becomes fatigued or weak there may be an increase in the “play” of the joint, this can lead to irritation in the tissues and the bursa may become inflamed. Symptoms include pain when raising the arm above the head and can lead to problems with sleep and simple daily activities. Using some light resistance and flexing and extending the wrist as part of your normal workout routine may help decrease the risk of injury and lessen the pain associated with this type of injury. Stress Fractures Stress fractures can occur when muscles are overused and put increased stress on to the bones. This type of injury is usually associated with an increase in training too rapidly, or “too much too soon”. This type of injury usually causes a crack in the bone rather than an actual break, usually occurring in the leg or the foot, resulting in a great deal of pain to the player. A programme of strength and endurance training will help prevent these injuries, as will wearing the correct footwear. Muscle Strains A routine warm up followed by proper stretching will reduce the risk of muscle strains, which usually occur from rapid, sudden movements. WELLBEING If you have any concerns about an injury The Berkshire Independent Hospital offers a range of services and would be happy to advise an appropriate specialist for you to see. He spent hours touring the show with co-founder Niki Schäfer and took time to chat to the stall holders and public. His friend and former colleague on DIY SOS is Julia Kendall and she came to watch him speak, and support him during the day. Cindy Burrowes reports back on what Nick had to say. Nick Knowles to the rescue Nick Knowles makes his presence felt. He is a tall guy with a wide smile and a booming voice. Most of the nation will recognise him as host of the BBCs Saturday night prime time TV show National Lottery:Who Dares Wins (now in its eighth series) or the quiz show Perfection. However, he clearly loves his emotional, altruistic role as the host for DIY SOS which he has fronted for 13 years. The nation loves to watch the team transform the home of a deserving family or individual in a tight time frame, using only volunteer tradespeople – 22,000 in the last eight years alone. He said in discussion with the audience at the Henley show: “The Valhalla for a TV presenter is the Saturday night slot, and I have been lucky to do that for nine years now, so you would think that would be the thing. But I would happily give all that up (don’t tell the BBC) just to do DIY SOS. “When we make the programme we make sure that everybody who works on it understands that we are the least important thing that is happening there. There is a family at the centre of it that actually need their story changing in a very real way and they have to be treated with respect and have their story represented in a very respectful way. “Secondly, 250 people have turned up to help us do that, for free, so they are the next 20 HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 most important thing. So you end up with a program that is respectful and entertaining.” And he added that he sees it as a duty to keep the programme going, but to make sure that it evolves all the time. It is such a popular format that nine million viewers watched the special when the team transformed a whole street of houses in Birmingham for returning injured and traumatised veterans with the help of Princes William and Harry. He has been seen to break down occasionally on the programme with the emotion of changing a family’s life – but it is You end up with a programme that is respectful and entertaining talking about the veterans that gives him a catch in his throat, and pauses his stream of chat with Henley’s enthusiastic audience. “The veteran street was 62 houses in 15 days. So the £3.5 million project showed us that we could do more, that the country would come out and support us. We’re working very hard at the moment to find more elderly people to represent as we tend to represent the young families and children with disability. “There is a huge problem with suicide rates within elderly men because very often when they have lost their work and then they lose their partners, they don’t know how to connect with other people.” The elderly, and their infinite experience, wisdom and capability were Nick’s driving force for his recent feature film Golden Years. He started writing it six years ago after seeing the perambulating entertainment of Granny Turismo (young people dressed as old who do a shopping trolley dance display) at the Henley Festival. His film, about a team of elderly bank robbers, was finally released earlier this year with a stellar cast including Virginia McKenna, Simon Callow and Una Stubbs. Nick’s other writing includes a series of accessible history programmes for the BBC. “I am amazed when I pull anything like this off – I come from a council estate in West London. I’m kind of amazed I am doing any of this. I was handing out awards at the palace, on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh and I worked with William and Harry. It is weird that I am meeting these people and having anything to do with them. Sometimes you want to pinch yourself. “I feel I made a decision at 16 that I wanted to live a life less ordinary, which means taking chances. So after a reasonably successful television career I then chucked everything in to making a film – if it does well, that’s fine, if it doesn’t, I will have lost everything that I have built up over the past 30 years. Life without risk is dull.” HOMES & GARDENS Nick’s Dos and Don’ts of Home Improvements DON’T THINK YOU SHOULD DO DIY DIY is all very fine, but in various publications I have told people not to do DIY! There is a reason a builder comes with one hundred thousand pounds worth of tools in his van. It’s so that you don’t go and buy crappy ones that don’t last five minutes. You might get a sense of pride from tiling the bathroom over 14 days yourself, but they are going to be wonky and you could have been doing something else. Pay a professional one day’s work. DO BE REALISTIC Be realistic is really my advice. Do what you are good at, earn money at what you are good at. And then pay somebody to do something they are good at. DO PLAN AHEAD People say to me it’s really hard to get a good tradesman. If you are thinking a year ahead and saving for 18 months – go and look at builders now, talk to builders now, tell them what you are after. Put it in the calendar and you will get a good builder who is trustworthy and not going to make a mess. DO ASK TO SEE A BUILDER’S RECENT WORK And if he is any good he will have other stuff that he has done – and if he has done a good job the person he has done it for won’t mind you going round to have a look at it. DON’T BE SURPRISED IF A BUILDER THAT IS FREE AT SHORT NOTICE TURNS OUT TO BE A DISASTER If you only booked him three weeks ago and he was available what makes you think he was any good? Someone available ASAP is probably not that good – it’s probably someone who keeps juggling four or five jobs at once. DO TAKE AS MUCH STRESS OUT OF BUILDING WORK AS POSSIBLE There’s huge stress in moving house – it is a really good idea to extend the gap before you move in, and have the heavy duty work done. Living in a house while its being done will drive you mad and will probably ruin your relationship. And you will think it will happen in a year and it will be about four years. Photo taken by Kathryn Fell at the Henley House & Garden Show DO USE A DESIGNER/PROJECT MANAGER It’s worth getting a designer and spending the money on somebody who will oversee your project. A good designer will do all this for you. There is now a crossover between architect and designer. HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 21 HOMES & GARDENS organised woman in the world’ but her secret is mostly likely in her absolute passion for tidying and her love of passing that on to others. And when we say ‘tidying’ – we do not mean sweeping everything back into the cupboard and hoovering the floor. This is a visceral clear-out of the home – leaving only things that you love, which are then organised. Marie Kondo’s six basic rules of tidying: The tidy guru As part of our Home series, Cindy Burrowes explores the magic of the Japanese tidying guru Marie Kondo. The next few issues will describe the KonMari principles, and the practicalities of using her method to transform your home. Marie Kondo has been on a one woman mission to ‘tidy the world’ since she was five years old. Already her work has transformed millions of homes around the globe through her consultancy, her online demonstrations and her hugely successful books: The Life Changing Magic of Tidying (translated and published in more than 35 countries) and Spark Joy. She has been dubbed ‘the most 1. Commit to the tidy-up – plan it and go for it. 2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle – really think about the environment you would like to live in – sketch it, write it out, hunt out pictures from Pinterest, magazines etc – this is a turning point. 3. Finish discarding first – it is hard to sort storage, re-organise your environment and start again if you have not removed all unnecessary items first. 4. Tidy by category, not location – to avoid just shuffling things from one room to another tackle each category in a huge pile. 5. Follow the right order – in order to achieve number four it is crucial to follow the right order: clothes, books/papers, komono (miscellany) and then sentimental items. By Kitchens We do not mean sweeping everything back into the cupboard the time you reach the distracting elements of old photos, etc, you will be an expert at discarding and hopefully won’t get distracted. 6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy – ‘Spark Joy’ is Marie Kondo’s criteria for everything worth keeping. Hold every item in both hands – notice how you feel when you hold it, touch it, smell it. If you feel heavier you probably don’t feel joy for it. Let go of the discarded items with gratitude and appreciation and the process will feel fruitful and positive. HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 23 S Fire up your imagination ummer is a good time to plan the redecoration of your living room, and the starting point has to be a new fireplace. With such a wide variety of fireplaces now on offer it is sometimes difficult to know where to start, but the best way is to visit a large showroom with many displays to get an idea of what is now available and to get expert advice on what is possible for your home. Only a few years ago, glass-fronted fires were few and far between. Most people wanted an open fire with big flames and were more interested in the overall look than in the fire’s efficiency. Nowadays, with greater awareness of global warming, tighter building regulations and increasing fuel bills, people are far more discerning about the performance of any appliance that they install in their homes. Contrary to what many people expect, a glass-fronted fire, burning gas or solid fuel, is more efficient than an open fire. Of course it still has to look stunning as the centrepiece of the living room, but fortunately many manufacturers have risen to the challenge and there are now hundreds of designs that look fantastic and are also extremely efficient. Gas or electric glass-fronted fires can be fitted as “hole-inthe-wall” fireplaces and there is usually no requirement to have hearth in front of the fire. This saves space. However fires burning wood or coal, always require a hearth to avoid risks when re-fueling. Gas-burning stoves, which have been around for many years, have enjoyed an enormous come-back in recent times. This has long been recognised as one of the most efficient ways to burn logs and many people are turning back to this carbon-neutral fuel. And while traditional designs remain popular, there are many highly modern designs that would look at home with the most contemporary décor. A:We are often asked about changing a bath tap to one which incorporates a shower attachment, known as a bath/shower mixer tap. However these will only work on the existing hot water system and if it is gravity fed — a tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard — then you may not get pressure from the shower. Also mixing the hot and cold water can make it troublesome to get the right temperature consistently, which could result in the hot water getting too hot and scalding, so this is generally inadvisable. There are thermostatic bath shower mixers available which help to negate temperature imbalance and reduce the risk of scalding, but if also on a gravity fed system could also result in poor water pressure. Mains pressurised hot water systems or combi boilers should work fine, but if you do not have either of them then a pump may be required to boost the pressure of a gravity fed system. Other options are to install a dedicated shower over the bath and there are many, but some, such as instantaneous showers and thermostatic, can result in a fair bit of work and disruption. We often recommend installation of a digital shower and these are available from manufacturers such as Mira and Aqualisa. These are normally very simple to install in a few hours. They are available either pumped or unpumped and the ceiling-fed models allow for minimum disruption to the existing bathroom. The showers are very reliable and control the temperature of the water in my opinion far more effectively than other showers on the marketplace. X155R Petrol ride-on lawn mower Hampton Court Henley Life visited the world’s largest annual flower show, the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, last month. It was a horticultural haven brimming with an eclectic mix of Show Gardens created by leading designers, beautiful Show Features and stunning floral displays. Favourites included the popular Festival of Roses Marquee and the thought-provoking Concept Show Gardens. Also the clever planting of lush ferns and lavender in the Smaller Show Gardens demonstrated what can be done to make the most of any size space. Our overall highlight at this year’s show was the enormous butterfly dome (pictured left). It was worth patiently standing in line to be transported into an exotic paradise. Walking through the thousands of tropical butterflies felt surreal. It was a fascinating and unusual experience and we joined-in with gasps of delight as wide-eyed visitors surveyed the magical environment. Stretches of unplanned time are a real luxury for most of us. However, most families face at least a block of time where energetic children need to be gainfully occupied. Although the easiest thing to do is leave them with the screens to which they seem to be attached, by the end of the day, most parents begin to feel guilty. Depending on the age of the children, one worth parents setting them up for them. Another way to occupy tech savvy children is to direct them to use their devices, tablets etc, more creatively for example painting or drawing digitally. As girls tend to love to sit and draw, make sure you stock up on plenty of cheap paper, pens and other art materials. Activities such as designing clothes or mapping out an ideal bedroom are just two of the suggestions gleaned from an online search of ‘at home activities’. approach is to plan and negotiate each day in advance, marking time blocks of activity which the children agree with. Sometimes an award scheme is great during the holidays to ensure that parents don’t have to battle all the time. A full day in the summer is a long time, and most parents, if they are not away working, will still have jobs to do at home. So a planned day can help and can incorporate watching TV, playing games on screens, school book reading, meals and bathtime. Children may enjoy drawing up a weekly planner themselves, or helping get meals ready. In terms of monitoring the games children play on screen, there are many educational mind games free online that will work young minds (www.knowledgeadventure.com or www.learninggamesforkids.com) so it is It may be worth spending an hour or so researching first It may be worth spending an hour or so researching first before planning the few days ahead. Useful websites for this are: www.educationalworld.com and www.disneyjunior.disney.co.uk. The upcoming Olympics and Paralympics will also provide a fantastic source of entertainment with lessons that children may carry with them for the rest of their lives. The whole family can look at the schedule, plan the events they might like to watch, and then re-enact in the garden afterwards. The BBC website is a good place to start then the whole extravaganza can be made a central part of August’s acitivities, won’t cost anything and will keep children active and thinking. SENIORS water on its own then put a jug of it in the fridge with some lemon slices, cucumber peelings, sticks of mint, or ginger to flavour the water. 2 Keep eating – you need to keep your strength up and in fact, it is believed that hot spicy foods which help you sweat are good to eat to speed up the cool down process. 3 Keep a mini hand fan handy – this costs a few pounds and can be kept in a drawer until you need it. If you are suffering then sit with it in your hand pointed at your face and you will feel much more comfortable. Some like it hot... Traditionally August should be a hot month, although this is not always the case in the UK. However, as we get older we find extreme temperatures harder to manage. So, just in case August turns into a sizzler, it is worth remembering what you can do to stay comfortable in the heat be it searing sunshine, or humid thunder storms. 1 Drink lots of fluid - to replace what you lose through perspiration. If you don’t like drinking 4 Only exert yourself at the cooler times of day – walking, gardening, housework and outside jobs should be done when it is cooler early in the morning or in the evenings and not in the middle of the day at the height of the sun and heat. 5 Put a fan on the windowsill – if you are inside and it is cooler outside then open the window and put a fan on the windowsill to push the cool air from outside across the room to keep it ventilated. It is worth remembering what you can do to stay comfortable in the heat 6 Block out the sun – close curtains and doors on bright sunshine throughout your home, and try to stick to the cooler areas of the house. If you are leaving the house for a few hours get into the habit of closing the cutains so it will be cooler on your return. 7 Wear loose clothes – there is a reason Bedouin robes work – the air circulates through and around them, unlike tight trousers and tops. 8 Put your hands in cold water – plunging your hands in a bucket or bowl of cold or iced water will help you cool down. 9 Take cool baths or showers – then air dry, this will help bring down your body temperature. 10 Take water with you – if you have to travel on public transport, or to appointments, take a bottle of water with you, and even a cold damp flannel in a plastic bag. HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 27 LOCAL ROUND-UP Golfing talent at Harleyford Harleyford Golf Club (pictured right) opened 20 years ago this month to much fanfare having been designed by world renowned course architect Donald Steel. During this relatively short period (for golf clubs anyway) the club has seen just about everything from boom and bust economics to the rise of international golfing sensation Tiger Woods and, some might add, his spectacular fall from grace. The club, one of the longer courses in the area, has developed its fair share of talent as well. Christian Donald was an assistant professional at the club until he was lured away to caddy on the PGA tour for a string of big names including Paul Casey, Martin Kaymer and his brother Luke. Christian is still out on the PGA tour currently teamed up with American professional Brendan Steele. Lately though, all eyes have turned to current member Tyrrell Hatton who joined the club some 13 years ago as a fresh faced 11-yearold. Today Tyrrell is a veritable veteran of the European golfing scene and in recent weeks has risen to be ranked just outside the world’s elite top 50 players (OWGR 55th at the time of writing) having finished second at the Scottish Open and finding himself in a tie for fifth place at the Open Championship after four days battling those seemingly impossible Scottish links conditions. Club Captain Ian Baines said: “Donald Steel made the greens at Harleyford particularly tricky, perhaps that’s why Tyrrell is one of the best putters on tour?” Talent and quality seem to permeate throughout the club with Bucks two-time ladies’ amateur champion, 15-year-old Thalia Kirby, a member along with a whole host of top quality youngsters blazing a trail that would be the envy of just about any club in the land. Ladies’ Captain, Bryony Moore, commented: “As young and talented as our current crop of player are, we still have players in their 80s winning big tournaments in the ladies’ section.” The club, under the ownership of the Harleyford Group, has gone from strength to strength over the last two years and is now developing into one of the best tests of golf in Buckinghamshire. Save the date... Everyone loves to laugh, and right now the country needs a good belly laugh. Luckily there's a brand new comedy coming to Henley’s Kenton Theatre in September which fits the bill perfectly. The Three Musketeers stars Peter Duncan, of Blue Peter fame, who heads up a quality cast for this laugh-out-loud show. Full of innuendo, with fast moving dialogue, and puns-a-plenty the production probably has more jokes than it is healthy to experience in two hours. It’s set in September 1942. There has been a theatrical disaster, it's time for curtain up and the majority of the actors, set props and costumes have not made it to the theatre. Aubrey Everett (Peter Duncan) tells the audience that the show can't go on. He swiftly changes his mind when he discovers that there is a man who has the power to change his career sitting in the audience – Arnold St Arnold, the prolific film producer. He mobilises the only three actors he has available to re-fashion his epic, sprawling and swashbuckling re-telling of The Three Musketeers using only the props they can find in the theatre. Chaos ensues, but the show must go on. The show is on from September 1 to 17 at 7.30pm with matinées on at 2.30 pm on the 3, 10 and 17. He is currently in Rio for the 2016 Olympics where he hopes to stroke the GB Eight to victory. As a teenager Will went to Shiplake College on a rugby scholarship. At around 16 he decided to go ‘go down the rowing route’. “I wasn’t very good at first, it took me quite a while to get the skill, but it kept my Mum happy and I wanted to prove everyone wrong,” he says. Will’s mother is Sally Satch, who teaches Design Technology at Shiplake College, and has coached rowing there for many years. When Will left school he went into the Leander cadets programme – he describes this as ‘eat, sleep, row’. He is one of very few top-flight rowers who did not go the university route, but dedicated his youth to rowing. Will lives in the centre of Henley where he has a short commute to the Leander Club. Why are you in Henley? Well, Henley is the centre of rowing – and is known all over the world for its Regatta – which is awesome. And now most of my family live here too. Although I didn’t grow up too far 30 HENLEYlife | AUGUST 2016 Olympic rower away, in Hurley. It feels like home, but I do like going to London occasionally. What do you like about Henley? I quite like the peacefulness, in the winter on a Sunday night it’s quite nice. Up in London it was buzzing all the time and there was no respite. My Mum’s here too, just down the road so if I need a hot dinner or some washing doing... What do you dislike about Henley? There aren’t a lot of young people in Henley so I am meeting people who are stuck in one environment – so rowers with rowers, etc. My mates moved on to London or America and I am left behind. Where is your favourite place to eat and drink in Henley? I don’t really go out in Henley, but occasionally it might be the Bull or the Giggling Squid is quite nice. A night out here tends be full of rugby players or rowers! What is your favourite Shop? There aren’t many left – lots of hairdressers though, so Ted James Barbers is my favourite – it’s awesome. Eddy who runs it is a good pal and he is a good bloke. What is your prized possession? My Olympic medal – it’s in a wine box with all my other medals. But I just want the gold now! What is your pet hate? Women with thin eyebrows! Thick eyebrows is my thing – thin ones make me feel really strange. I don’t know what it is. What is your favourite book/film or song? Book: Papillon by Henri Charriere –I’m reading it now and absolutely loving it. Film: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as a book and as a film is incredible. Song: The one I listen to that came on randomly before the Olympic final: Wolfmother’s song Joker and the Thief. It brings me straight back into that situation. And I am really into Wolf Alice at the moment – I used to watch them live in Camden before they took off. What is your biggest regret? Maybe not going to the States to University when I had the chance. What is the best advice you were ever given? Will have to think about that one, but I think I have been given too much advice over the years... manninguk ManningUK Tailor made for ForAll All Your Insurance Your Insurance Requirements Requirements Specialist insurance brokers ManningUK pride themselves on providing a personal, professional and a face to face service.
