PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
It’s hard to believe it is December already! This has certainly been one of the
most exciting years the Chase Elementary School community has experienced in
its 75 year history. Thanks to the amazing teachers, students, and parents that
make up Team Chase, the Lighthouse initiative is moving ahead in ways that have
benefitted everyone involved. I have been so impressed with how everyone is
working together for our students that I have written quite a bit about our
journey this year. Please take some time to check out what I have written so far
on the Lighthouse Reflections website or one of my recent blog posts –
http://bit.ly/15OfZsj OR http://bit.ly/1sYijFN . Did you know that BCPS has
partnered with Microsoft to make MS Office available to all students??!! Check it
out - http://www.bcps.org/news/articles/article6787.html.
More exciting stuff happening at Chase . . .
 Our 5th graders have started their own blog https://chasein5th.wordpress.com/.
 Our STAT Teacher, Ms. McVicker, has starred on Math Homework helpers http://bit.ly/1zg6w5E and has written her own blog entry about the Lighthouse
initiative - http://bit.ly/1pQ4Yzi .
 Mrs. Piunti and I were interviewed for BCPS News http://vimeo.com/112518037
 County Council Chairwoman, Cathy Bevins, visited us during American Education
Week (see pictures).
 We had an amazing turnout for the Grandparents Breakfast sponsored by our
fabulous PTA.
HOT OFF THE PRESS - - - On Wednesday, December 3, Chase Elementary was officially chosen as 1 of only
2 Baltimore Ravens’ Hometown Grant schools. The school received a $5,000 grant from Fuel Up to Play 60,
Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, and the Baltimore Ravens. The third grade students represented Team Chase
at M&T Bank Stadium to accept the grant, tour the stadium, and meet with former Raven, Qadry Ismail!!
Dear Parents/Caregivers:
For the past 4 years Chase Elementary School has participated in a program called Fuel Up to Play 60.
This is a program founded by the National Dairy Council and NFL, in collaboration with the USDA. Fuel
Up to Play 60 is the nation’s largest in-school wellness program and creates real transformational change
in more than 73,000 schools. It empowers students to make healthy food choices and get 60 minutes of
exercise every day. Physical activity, in combination with good nutrition, is essential to a healthy lifestyle.
In fact, some studies show that active kids do better when it comes to academic performance and
concentration in class. We want students to make a difference not only in their lives, but also in their
community.
Students are able to take the pledge to Fuel Up to Play 60 at http://fueluptoplay60.com/. Every Chase
student will be able to participate in the activities that will take place throughout the school year. It is
important to note that students do not have to take the online pledge in order to participate in Fuel Up to
Play 60 activities. Everyone at Chase Elementary School is a Fuel Up to Play 60 team member!
On Wednesday, December 3, Chase Elementary was officially chosen as 1 of only 2 Baltimore Ravens’
Hometown Grant schools. The school received $5,000 in Fuel Up to Play 60 funds from Fuel Up to Play
60, Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association, and the Baltimore Ravens. These funds will be used throughout the
school year for things such as physical activity equipment and to incorporate even more healthy eating
options in the school. Each member of the Chase community will benefit from this prestigious award and
also play an important role in the continued success of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program at our school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Gina Sherwood and Mr. Jude Silverman
