NEWSLETTER SPRING 2016 Happy Spring!!! As Midwesterners, we are accustomed to patiently waiting for Spring each year. We look forward to warmer weather, longer days, watching the ice disappear off our 10,000 lakes, baseball season and the Twin Cities Chemical Coaters Golf Outing! The TC-CCAI chapter cannot control the weather, but we can expedite the fun factor with a Saints baseball game and another great golf event! The golf committee is preparing for a fun day to spend with friends and colleagues on June 16th at Oak Glen golf course in Stillwater. Also at the 2016 golf outing we will be announcing the 2016 scholarship recipients. There is still time to submit an application for a scholarship. The deadline for submitting applications has been extended to Friday, April 15th. Please see the chapter website for the details and application. Thank you to Mark Mense and Matt Kirchner for speaking at our February Symposium. Both did a great job educating the attendees on the industrial finishing coating process and how to create and train world class manufacturing teams. Matt’s presentation left us all thinking how we can keep manufacturing in the forefront of people’s thoughts and actions. Stay tuned for a Fall event when the chapter brings high school students and manufacturing together throughout the Twin Cities. The turnout for tours this winter has been outstanding. Thank you to all who have attended, hosted or helped to coordinate the 2016 programming. Upcoming events include: Wold Rim and Wheel – Thursday, April 21st St. Paul Saints Baseball Game- Thursday, May 19th TC-CCAI Golf Classic- Thursday, June 16th Enjoy the Sunshine! This perspective changed somewhat as the TC-CCAI hosted a tour of 30 people to see the Whirltronics, Inc. manufacturing facility in Buffalo, MN. Whirltronics is lawn mower blade manufacturer producing over 4 million OEM lawn mower blades a year with 70% of the blades powder coated. Whirltronics Director of Operations Neil Bengtson began the program with a presentation of the manufacturing process for its lawn mower blade production including the powder coating line. Whirltronics is a ISO 9001 Certified company using 6-Sigma as well as 6S principles. When the presentation was concluded the tour attendees gathered into three groups for a guided factory tour. In addition to Neil Bengston, Lee Schultz and Matt Severson were the Whirltronics tour leaders. The tour attendees viewed blades starting out as coil stock and after forming and sharpening procedures were put through a heat treating process. Most blades are racked while on a conveyor line and sent to a powder spray booth with a six automatic powder spray gun application and then into an IR cure oven. Cured powder coating blades are removed from the conveyor line and placed into cartons ready for customer shipments. After the factory tour, the group consumed nine large pizzas with soft drinks and cookie deserts. TC-CCAI member Roy Schwarze of Douglas Finishing was not present when his name was drawn for a $75.00 attendance award – too bad Roy. At the February TC event, the Pot of Money drawing will be worth $100 to a TC Chapter member if present during the drawing. Thanks to the Whirltronics organization for a really fine company presentation and tour of their manufacturing facility. 9 LBLUE A total process-eontrol methodology developed by Troy Chemical ~~ ~/~;( -based on 40 years of pretreatment expertise- ~I KOOL BLUE™ • Maximizes the efficiency and minimizes the cost of operating your pretreatment system. • Reduces environmental impaet, energy requirements, and water usage while meeting the highest Quality standards.
