Inside This Issue
Dear Families and Friends of WBHS,
The 2015-16 school year will end it’s first semester of instruction on
January 21, 2015. Students will be off on the 22nd as staff work on
completing grades for the semester and participate in district wide
in-service.
As we prepare for the New Year and second semester, here are a few reminders:
1. Semester 1 Exams~ January 20 - 21 we will run an extended period schedule. Odd
period classes will take exams on the 20th and even period classes will test on the 21st.
There will be a 47 minute Advisory period on the 20th to give students an opportunity to
study for the next day’s exams, meet with teachers, and complete work. Honor students may
leave during their assigned lunch period and during Advisory, if not requested by a teacher.
This year we have reduced the length of the testing period which allows us to
have exams completed on Thursday, January 21 at 12:00. The afternoon will
be dedicated for test re-takes. Students who have completed all required work
for the semester and have finished all their exams will be dismissed after lunch.
Students riding busses will be supervised in the commons until the normal departure time at 3:25.
2. 2016-17 Scheduling~ Scheduling for the 2016-17 school year will begin shortly after
the 1st semester ends. Please be watching for information about new courses and course
changes. It is very important that families look over course options together to best prepare
students for their post-secondary plans. The scheduling handbook does a great job at providing important information for families about requirements, dual credit options, and course
pathways.
3. 2016 Graduation Dates~ The 2016 commencement ceremony is scheduled for May
28, 2016 at 7:00 PM in the high school gymnasium. The Senior Awards Ceremony will be
held on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 7:00 pm. This schedule change is due to several conflicts in the athletic schedule. Please note this change on your calendars.
4. 11th Grade ACT Exam~ This assessment will measure college and career readiness
for students at the end of their junior year. The ACT helps provide families and students with
reliable predictors of post-secondary success. This test is often required for college or technical school entrance. The test would cost families approximately $55.00 if taken outside the
district. By taking the test here at WBHS, students will not only get great information about
their futures, but it will save families money. The test is scheduled for all juniors on March 1,
2016.
5. 11th Grade WorkKey’s test~ ACT WorkKeys is an employability skills assessment
system that helps employers select, hire, train, develop, and retain a high-performance workforce. This series of tests measures foundational and soft skills and offers specialized assessments to target institutional needs. WorkKeys focuses on three areas; Applied Math,
Reading for Information, and Location Information. The test is scheduled for all juniors on
March 2, 2016.

Veteran’s Day
Wednesday, November 11th , the Witt-Birn High School honored the Veterans in a
ceremony in the gym. The WBHS Band performed many songs and the Veterans of the
community and school were honored. "THANK YOU VETERANS!"

Witt-Birn High School Hosts CWC Social Studies Partnership Meeting
Twenty area educators attended the CWC Social Studies Partnership Meeting at Wittenberg-Birnamwood
High School on Thursday, October 22, 2015. Major topics for discussion included a review of the upcoming
state mandated Civics Test for High School Seniors and a presentation by local resident Karl Hanke on his
experience at the Colonial Williamsburg Summer Teacher Institute. WBHS educators also shared teaching
strategies with the attendees. Kevin Wick demonstrated a game based learning website called Kahoot,
Chris Bartletti shared various Psychology Resources and John Heinrich shared vocabulary instruction resources for Social Studies teachers. Also in attendance that day were Witt-Birn Middle School Teachers
Mike Balliett and Jeff Stoddard.
Each year, Social Studies Teachers from the CWC meet to share resources and knowledge. Later in the
day, each teacher in attendance was allowed to share a resource which could be a lesson plan, assignment,
website, or other classroom activity. This sharing of knowledge and networking is extremely valuable for local teachers. Local WBHS graduates in attendance were Karl Hanke (All Saint’s - Antigo) and Shane Larson
(Rosholt).
CWC Teachers would like to thank Ms. Swinick’s FACE courses and Principal Jill Sharp for planning and preparing the awesome lunch and snacks.

WBHS Sophomores Paige Lewis and Jazmine
Wolff, joined Mrs. Susan Swinick in attendance at
the University of Wisconsin- Stout Family and Consumer Sciences Conference on Friday, September
25. The students toured the campus and then
joined educators during lunch where they had an
opportunity to learn more about the profession of a
Family and Consumer Science Educator. In the afternoon, the students attended a workshop with Mrs.
Swinick titled, "Apps for FACS." FACS educators
are encouraged to invite students to accompany
them at this conference in the future as there is high
demand for this profession. Paige and Jazmine enjoyed their campus visit and networking with Wisconsin FACS educators.

Fabrics in Wausau to purchase materials for their
sewing projects. They
learned about fabric selection, and cutting and how to
purchase notions and manufacturer's patterns under the
guidance of Mrs. Swinick.

Mrs. Swinick's Creative Foods class visited
Fox Valley Technical college, Appleton to explore the culinary arts program on 10/22. Several students also investigated the health science and public safety program. Students enjoyed eating food prepared by the culinary arts
students in the food commons.

Parent and Child students visited the Aspirus Birthing Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Wausau. They observed a birthing room, a NICU suite and had
the opportunity to continue to learn about the birthing process and infant care from
Parent Educator, Laurie Solomon.
The Parent and Child classroom had the pleasure of
learning about autism from Ms. Deanna Jensen, Special Education teacher at Wittenberg Elementary
School on November 3rd. Students participated in an
activity to create awareness for the sensory overload a
student with autism may experience.
Ms. Beth Schaefer, representative from the Wisconsin Milk
Marketing Council, shared nutrition facts about dairy in a
“Rethink the Drink” presentation for the Basic Foods classrooms on October 6.

Notes from the Nurse:
Parents and students please follow the school procedure for leaving school due to unexpected
illness.
Students feeling too ill to remain in class should report the high school office.
Students are to discuss their circumstances with office staff.
Students are allowed to keep medications at school for the treatment of minor illness and
may rest in the health office. Use the Medication Consent form, available in the office,
for permission to use medication at school. Students with fever (temp >100 degrees)
and other signs or symptoms of illness should go home.
If deemed necessary after discussion with office staff, students may then contact parent for
request to leave school. Sign out procedures, including authorization from parent, must
be followed.
There is an increasing trend of students and parents making arrangements to leave school using text messaging. Please follow the above
procedure to ensure student safety and effective communication with
the high school office.
Ms. Bacon's Physical Education Classes - Swim Unit
We will be starting the swimming unit on December 1st and will go 6 days in 2 weeks. All students in Ms. Bacon's PE class at the present time will need to bring proper swimming attire and
their own towel to class. All students are able to wear a shirt, but it can not have cotton in it,
needs to be a dry fit or compression shirt. Girls can not wear a two piece without a shirt over it.
Boys need to wear to trunks for the unit. If the student has a medical issue with the water or
chlorine, a doctor's note must be provided ASAP and an alternative unit will be provided.

The Witt-Birn Chargers Volleyball Team made school
history last fall as they won their WIAA Regional D3
bracket. First volleyball team to ever do this at WBHS.

Physical Education classes on Friday, November 13th to teach self defense techniques.
2015-16 Food Drives
The WBHS Charger Athletic Club will be hosting 5 food drives this season at the boys and girls non-conference basketball games. Bring in 1 Non-Perishable Item and recieve 1 Free Admission into the Game Or 1 chance to win a $10.00

CHARGER ATHLETIC CLUB
On November 6th, Wittenberg-Birnamwood HS Charger Athletic Club had two groups of members take on the task of raking
leaves for the community.
The 22 students that volunteered to rake the Homme Home were Corrisa Konkol, Taylor Nier, Madi Pietz, Makayla
Verkuilen, Lexie Balliet, Dylan Sprague, Kyle Adamski, Danica Wendler, Nate Miller, Devin Gruna, Kendra Stoltz, Sam
Kasprak, Victoria Dombek, Kylie Linke, Nikki Luecke, Katie Tryba, Maddy Pietz, Alyssa Meverden, Molly Gretzlock, Erica
Wendler, Marquise Piotrowski, and Derek Hoffman.
The Second group of members raked at Karen Steger’s home in Eland. The 22 volunteers were Stetson Potrykus,
Keegan Delforge, Emily Norrbom, Nikki Mahan, Griffin Magee, Siri Zeinert, Kyle Premeau, Alex Nelson, Amanda Muscha, Ian
Zeinert, Michael Nelson, Keegan Miller, Matthew Kapitz, Josh Wick, Trevor Groshek, Matt Thrun, Paige Norrbom, Abbey
Yaeger, Gavin Czerwonka, and Alex Peplinski.

attended the FFA National Convention in Louisville,
Kentucky.

The WBHS Agricultural Education Department would like
to extend its gratitude and deepest appreciation to the
Wittenberg-Birnamwood FFA Alumni for its generous
donation of a classroom set of laptops and cart. The commitment that the FFA Alumni has displayed throughout the years to
the education of WBHS students is phenomenal! Members of the
FFA Alumni are friends, parents, community members, and former
FFA members that have banded together with the common interest
of helping current FFA members reach their true potential. Each
year they host the annual Corn Roast in order to financially support
students postsecondary education, and assist students in attending
personal and leadership development conferences and conventions.
Their support plays an enormous role in the opportunities that the
WB FFA members have. The FFA Alumni have knowledge and experience that members can ask for help and seek out new experiences. Each year they provide animals for members to learn how
to care for and show at the county fairs, their business successes allow members to see you can be financially stable doing something you love, and their knowledge of history about the FFA proves invaluable when looking through past pictures. The FFA Alumni
is an amazing organization that allows adults, whether they were a former FFA member or not, to actively participate and make a
difference in every single FFA member’s life.
The WBHS Agricultural Education Department and the WB FFA Chapter would not be the same without your support. As the WB
FFA Chapter celebrates our 75th anniversary, we have received a wonderful gift. The WB FFA Alumni’s generous donation made
the purchasing of the classroom set of laptops and cart possible. This gift will not only help FFA members, but it will make an impact within every agricultural education student’s experience. WB FFA Alumni, you are definitely living out this year’s FFA theme
through amplifying and boosting your impact! Thank you to all of the FFA Alumni members and their supporters!

“I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of
deeds - achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists;
in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we
now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years.”- The FFA
Creed. The FFA Creed is a rite of passage within the FFA, it has touched the lives of every
FFA members for the past 85 years. The creed is made up of 5 simple paragraphs, but these are
more than just words, they are series of fundamental beliefs.
The first paragraph previously mentioned, discusses our need to follow through with actions
rather than just make promises. Throughout history there has been times of great suffering, these
experiences have forced us to act and by doing so it provided an opportunity for us to learn and
grow. WB FFA is no different, over the years it has had it’s share of struggles and triumphs as any
organization has. The FFA’s mission is to “make a positive difference in the lives of students by
developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.” WB FFA strives to provide all of its members with opportunities that allow
them to grow.
One such experience is that of the National FFA Convention that was hosted in Louisville,
KY, where over 65,000 FFA members met for the 88th annual convention. Five of our FFA members were able to attend. Through our travels, we visited several agricultural stops such as the
Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, Mammoth Cave System, Louisville Slugger, Glasswork Studio, and others. When we explore new things, many opportunities open to us.
If you can’t find opportunities, make them for yourself, by going out and trying something
new. Take a healthy risk, you never know, it may become your Supervised Agricultural Experience, or even your career. The National FFA Convention provides the stage for students to be recognized for their efforts. This year, Wisconsin was privileged to have over 75 individuals and chapters that had their healthy risks acknowledged on a national level. WAY TO GO WISCONSIN! The
students that were acknowledged will surely never forget being on stage in front of 65,000 of their
peers.
The National FFA Convention kicked off the school year in a big way. It left us thinking how
can we implement the FFA’s theme for the year, “Amplify! Boost your impact!” We all have our
choices, how will our choices make an impact? It is up to us, what will we do to make our surroundings better? What will we choose to believe? We leave you with the last paragraph of the
FFA Creed, and how will you influence our community and make an impact? “I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert
an influence in my home and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.”FFA Creed

Winter “To Do List” for Seniors
*If you are planning on attending college (either a 4-yr or 2-yr) get those applications in! After you apply,
make sure you ask Ms. Spiegelberg to send your transcripts to the school(s) you have applied to.
*WBHS will be holding an informational meeting on Thursday, January 7th, at p.m. A Great Lakes College Access advisor will be presenting “Finding Money for College: Completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid). This presentation walks students and families through the different types of financial aid available, including grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans, with focus on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®).
*Make yourself aware of scholarship opportunities at the colleges/universities you are considering. You
can find scholarship information on the Financial Aid websites of most colleges/universities. WBHS’s local
scholarships will become available on February 1st.
*Visit campuses you are interested in and narrow down your choices.
*If you are still undecided about what you are doing after graduation, please stop by the school counselor’s office to get some help with the decision process. We can work to get you in contact with an admission representative, coordinate a school visit, and/or set up a job shadow with a place of employment that
best fits your interests.

*Continue to think about what you want to do when you graduate high school. If you are planning on attending a university or technical college, research the admissions requirements for the school you are interested in. If you are undecided, it is important to go on some college visits and/or job shadows to get a
better idea of what path you might take when you graduate from WBHS. See Ms. Spiegelberg if you need
help setting up a college visit and/or job shadow.
*All Juniors, state-wide, will be taking the ACT and the ACT WorkKeys on March 1st and March 2nd. See
the State-Testing information section, following the Winter “To Do List” for Freshman for more detailed
information about the ACT and the ACT WorkKeys.

* In the past, all Sophomore students had to complete the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concept Exam. This
year the state decided that they were going to test the Sophomores using the ACT Aspire assessment.
This assessment is now required for all WI’s Freshman and Sophomore students. All Sophomores, statewide, will be taking the ACT Aspire in late April and early May. More detailed information about the testing schedule will be provided as the testing window gets closer. See the State-Testing information section,
following the Winter “To Do List” for Freshman for more detailed information about the ACT Aspire.
*Watch the announcements for college admissions counselors and military reps that are visiting the
school. Take advantage of this opportunity to speak, first hand, with an expert from that college or military branch.
*Study hard and continue to be aware of your current grades and your GPA.
*Start thinking about course selection for next year. The scheduling process will start shortly after 2nd semester begins.

Charger Athletic Club Trip
Members of the Charger Athletic Club went on
their first club trip to Appleton’s Xtreme Air where
they enjoyed the exciting and fun activities to do
there. To end the day, they went to eat at Stones
Grill.

because of the person’s sex, race, color, national orientation, or physical, mental, emotional, or learning disability or handicap as required by S.118.13 Wis.
Stats., political affiliation, arrest or conviction record, membership in National Guard, State Defense or Reserve Component of the Military forces of the United States or State of Wisconsin. This policy also prohibits discrimination as defined by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (race and national origin), and
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
The district encourages informal resolution of complaints under this policy. A formal complaint resolution procedure is available, however, allegations of
violations of the policy in the Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District should be directed to:
