Our speakers for the April 5th meeting will be MSSFA’s President Dr. Ken Merckel, and Clinton River Watershed Ecologist Matt Einheuser.
WE WILL ALSO HAVE OUR ANNUAL SWAP MEET, SO BRING OUT YOUR GOODIES, AND SET UP A TABLE!!!! ANNNND MATT LUBAWAY
WILL BE DOING ROD TIP REPAIRS, SO BRING YOUR RODS WITH BROKEN TIPS!
The line up for Aprils general Membership Meeting is as follows-- not needing an introduction is MSSFA's
President Dr. Ken Merckel. We all know this man and the hard work he puts into this organization. He'll be
talkin a little on this Aquaculture which is the next huge hurdle we are crossing followed with some answers to your questions.
Dr. Merckel has fished and hunted all of his life and joined the Thumb Chapter of the Michigan Steelhead
and Salmon Fishermen’s Association in 1985. Dr. Merckel served the Thumb Chapter as vice president
for six years and president for two years. He has served as the chapter’s state director to MSSFA since
1991. During his tenure on MSSFA’s board he has fostered collaborative relationships with the MDNR,
Michigan Sea Grant, Great Lakes Science Center and United States Fish & Wildlife Service. He has successfully worked through MSSFA to secure funding for the MDNR hatchery renovation, increased the rod
limit to three per person and five salmon per person limit on the Great Lakes and continues to improve the
fishery through his work as a member of the Lake Huron Citizens Fishery Advisory Committee of the
MDNR.
Next we have Matt Einheuser who is the Watershed Ecologist for Clinton River Watershed Council. Matt will
bring us up to date on one of the rivers in our back yard that some of us fish. Matt joined CRWC in 2015. Previously, Matt worked as a conservation technician working with landowners and the agricultural community to
address natural resource concerns and water quality issues. He also has a background involving work in fisheries and hydrologic modeling. Matt received his B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife from Michigan State University. In
addition he received a M.S. from MSU in Crop and Soil Sciences, studying the effects of land-use change on
stream health. As the watershed ecologist, Matt is responsible for the coordination of the organization’s technical
needs through data collection, ecology, and field research. He manages CRWC’s Ecological Application and
Assessment Program, coordinates Clinton River Coldwater Conservation Projects, and assists with Adopt-AStream research data and training. In his free time, Matt enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, and overall spending
time outdoors.
Before the meeting which will be starting an hour early so the members can set up is our very own
swap meet. Clean out your fishin room, grab a table and get rid of that equipment you no longer use.

CLINTON RIVER STEELHEAD TOURNAMENT AND PUBLIC OUTING
Submitted by Tim Tenbusch, Event Chairman
Please accept this invitation to join Metro West
Steelheaders, Clinton River Watershed Council
and, City of Rochester Hills for the Clinton River
Steelhead Outing on Saturday, April 9th. This
important civic event heralds the arrival of springtime in Michigan and showcases the economic vitality and quality of life in our local communities that we enjoy because of our precious water resources.
It all takes place at Yates Park, where Avon Road crosses the Clinton River at Dequindre
Road, and begins with a morning of fishing. There will be ample parking, thanks to the generous participation by Yates Cider Mill.
We recognize your role as an important community/civic stakeholder. Join us for a look at
all the interest and activity that the steelhead spawning run generates each and every
spring with the return of the Great Lakes steelhead to the Clinton River. Although it has been a designated fishery managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division for more than 20 years, the Yates site remains
little-known and under-appreciated beyond a rather small circle of anglers.
The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and appreciation for the recreation and tourism value of the river. Event
sponsors will present a variety of angling and conservation sessions. Arrive early and enjoy hot coffee and pastry; Metro
West Steelheaders will serve hot soup, hot dogs and chips mid-day. Metro West Members, Remember to bring a can of:

Chicken or Vegatable soup to add to the club pot of soup (no cream varieties)

The Club provides everything else.
Metro West Steelheaders Club, City of Rochester Hills, and Clinton River Watershed Council … work together on this
event. It is a great way to shake off your cabin fever and experience a very exciting piece of Mother Nature right here in
our own backyard. The public is welcome from 9 am until 1 pm.; member tournament - daylight to noon.
Bring your fishing equipment and waders, if you are so inclined, or just your interest and a camera. Feel free to bring your
family and friends. If nature’s timing and weather conditions are right, you will get the chance to experience first-hand the
thrill of watching an 8-pound steelhead trout leap the falls at Yates Park.

MANISTEE BROWN TROUT TOURNAMENT APRIL 23, 2016
steelheaders
Submitted by Event Chairmen Dave Zawacki and Ted Ringer
Two great Tourneys for one days Fishing off the Beaches of Manistee Michigan.
Metro West:
Invite: Captains Ted Ringer of the “Fish Eye” and Dave Zawacki of the “Salty Dog” will be co-chairing the “3nd Annual ” Big Lake Brown Trout Tourney, on Saturday 4/23/16. This event will be held in conjunc-tion with our good friends Paul & Darcy Stewart of the “Lake Shore Motel” in Manistee.
You can participate in one, but we highly recommend both tourneys. There will be one fee for the MWS Tourney ($5/ Man and $10 for Big Fish, per
boat) and a second fee for the Lake Shore event. Both weigh in’s will be held at the Lake Shore Motel, adjacent to the South Pier, in the port of Manistee. This will be a Big Lake Event, with points being awarded for “Captain of the Year”. Note: Our Pier and Beach members can still participate by
entering the Lake Shore Motel event (See below).
Big Lake, Brown Trout fishing early in the Spring is usually done by long line trolling stick baits & spoons in the shallows, just off the second & third
troughs, along the beaches. This can be a big plus because you can hide in tight along the bluffs from offshore winds and still have a great day of
fishing. If the winds do play into leaving port, we have fished the harbors and adjacent lakes of Manistee, Ludington and Frankfort, as well. This is a
“Brown trout” Tourney, but the weigh in will count for any combination of one person’s legal limit of Brown Trout, Steel Head, Coho Salmon, King
Salmon, or Lake Trout. The “Big Fish” contest will be for the biggest “Brown Trout”. There will be no food provided at the Weigh-in, but a Banquette
will be held for those participating in the Lake Shore event, later that evening. Note: A separate entry applies, payable at the Lake Shore Motel by
10PM on Friday 4/22/16 (See Below). The Lake Shore Motel is offering special room rates for this event: Single Accommodation/Bed @ $54/night,
Double Accommodation/Beds @ $59/night. There is a $5/person adder for extra folks.
Details & Rules : MWS Details MWS Rules MWS Liability Waiver
Lake Shore Motel:
Invite: The Lake Shore Motel is sponsoring its 25th Annual Spring Brown Trout Tournament. The Lake Shore Tourney is an every man for himself
event, so each man weighs his best (one) fish for each allowable species (Brown Trout, Steelhead, Lake Trout & Salmon). Your weight in each category then earns your place for trips to the prize table. You may fish anywhere in Michigan waters. The first place Brown gets his name on the coveted
“Lake Shore” cup and gets to keep it until next year’s event. A raffle ticket is issued when you register. This ticket is used for a drawing of the prize
money at the end of the event (Vs. payout by place. Gives everybody a chance to get involved). The Lake Shore Motel Tourney has a $25 entry fee,
payable in cash, at the Motel office, by 10PM on Friday 4/22/16. The comradery at this event is awesome. I was invited for the first time almost 10
years ago and believe this to be a great kick off to the season, with a bunch of excellent fisherman!
Please send all RSVP’s to Ted Ringer or Dave Zawacki by 2 PM Monday 4/18/16, to allow Dave & Paul time to finalize Banquette Planning.

TIME TO UPDATE! WANTED! BIG STEELHEAD & KING SALMON FOR
DISPLAY MOUNT UPDATES! GET YOUR TROPHY MOUNTED AT NO COST TO
YOU!
The Plan:
Jeff Bustos is heading up the effort to replace the clubs current Steelhead display mount. During the January 2014 Board Meeting Jeff made the pitch
for three new mounts. At the May 2014 Board Meeting funding was approved for Taxidermy and transport cases for one fish. Funding for the remaining two proposed mounts will be reviewed and approved as the process progresses in 2015. A Taxidermist has been selected to provide “skin on”
mounts, for a Winter Male Steel head (Pink/Red Cheeks), a Summer Big Lake Steelhead and a Summer Big Lake King.
If you decide to “Donate” your fish for update of the MWS Show & Outreach Display’s, here is
what you get:


Bragging Rights!!
Your name w/ date caught & weight, will be engraved on a brass tag located on the display
base.
Criteria:





All submittals must be in good condition (No broken backs, prop or lamprey marks…
please).
Sammy Steelhead is being retired!
Winter River Male (Pink/Red Cheeks): Minimum Weight (Close to): 14 Lbs
Summer Big Lake Steelhead: Minimum Weight (Close to): 14 Lbs
Summer Big Lake King: Minimum Weight (Close to): 27 Lbs [Silver phase only]
Note: 1) Selection will be based on a first come first served basis, except where more than one fish may be available. If more than one fish is
submitted, say at a MWS event, then the “Better Looker” will be selected, 2) Minimum Weights: We want a “Big Fish”, but also want a mount
ready for the 2016 shows, so if you get a 12.5# Steely, or a 25# King, send a Pic to Jeff for a ruling (May be accepted).
What to do:
1.
2.
3.
Confirm weight of Fish.
Take a picture and send it to Jeff Bustos ASAP for a ruling (accept/decline) and so he can get word into the Taxidermist to coordinate pick
up & drop times.
Wrap the fish, with fins laying naturally flat in a SOAKED
bath/beach towel. And place into garbage bag with as
much air removed as possible. Keep the fish on ice, or
place into freezer. Most importantly, LAY FLAT when on
ice/freezing.
Field Care Guidelines:
Any questions, call Jeff Bustos at (734) 968-6143, or E-Mail at [email protected]
UPDATE!
We have the first considered submission! Lucas Kenbeek has donated a 12.6 lb, 36” Female
Skamania Steelhead! A final decision will not be made until we see what the rest of the year
brings!
So if you catch a nice fish, follow the care instructions above and contact Jeff Bustos immediately!

OUT-DOOR-RAMA REPORT
steelheaders
Event Chairman: Mark Platt
After chairing these shows for apx. 10 years, starting out with the Ultimate Fishing Show than switching over to Out-Door-Rama I'm
stepping down so as to start practicing for retirement. We do need some of the newer members to step up and help out with some of
these club functions seeing how we 're one of the better clubs out there but getting there and staying there takes a little work. I will
mentor anybody that wants to try it, actually it's pretty easy.
Enough business cause the show must go on and indeed it did. Once again we got many kids to put away those silly video games
cause we got them hooked on fishin with our fish simulator. The show was a huge success with a lot of help coming from our members
but the special one being Hermann Christoph again, Chris covers the first half of the show while I'm working, than I cover the last half. Also he helps out with the other
two shows SOOOO many thanks Chris ! Another special one or one's is Jeff and Phil Bustos, these two guys take care of and deliver and take down the fish simulator
plus the sound system at the shows and meetings so many
thanks to you guys also. Not but least is Henry with his
magical fingers making that computer do what he needs it to
do (not an easy task) in sending out all the club info, schedules or whatever else we need to put the show on,
thank you.
Besides the smiles we put on all those kids, we also
signed up 7 new members plus 2 old ones. It did take 44
members to put this show on (best turnout ever) so many
thanks to all that helped. We also signed up many kids for a
chance to go too MUCC camp, a raffle we have every year
to determine who the lucky ones are that get to go to this
camp at our expense. Last year I believe we sent 18 kids to
camp learning how to hunt, fish, canoe, and just enjoy our
wonderful outdoors.
Good Time had by all!

FIELD AND STREAM SPRING FISHING KICKOFF EVENT - MWS MEETINGsteelheaders
THE PUBLIC
Submitted by Henry Nabors
Metro West Steelheaders was invited to participate in the
Field & Stream Spring Fishing Kickoff event on Sunday
March 20th. We were offered a donation of $100 to participate and talk about Metro West Steelheaders’ fishing in
Michigan. Tim Tenbusch, John Andersen, Gale Frazee and Matt Lubaway and I
manned our table in the middle of the F&S Fishing Department where Club Member Jason Sweeney is Department Manager. During John’s time at the table, he tied flies and talked with visitors. All of us talked about Metro
West and the fishing we do around the State. There was a lot of talk about the steelhead being caught in the
Clinton River at
this time. Jason
share his success stories with
many of our visitors - and a few
visitors share
there success
stories with us. Five of our visitors joined Metro West and many of the visitors indicated they would come to the
General meeting on April 5th or visit us on April 9th at the Clinton River Outing. We added twenty seven new
newsletter recipients to our distribution list. They wanted to learn more about our club.
We distributed calendar cards, club information and Coast Guard boating information provided by our Coast
Guard friends - Clyde Schoen and Anthony Mallia. Over forty CG
coloring books were given to the children that visited (or to parents/grandparents if the children were not with them). Thanks
CG!! The boating safety information was appreciated as well.
The materials and coloring books will be available at future MWS
events - including the Clinton river outing April 9th and the Kids
Outing on June 11th.

WHEN PREPARATION MEETS OPPORTUNITY
steelheaders
Submitted by Roger Hinchcliff
What if I told you 80% of your FISH are caught from home? Many things can
influence how much water a river gets every season. The rising river flow will
impact the river’s clarity, the water levels and even temperature. Those factors
can most certainly affect your fishing success, what tactics you use and where
the fish will be. A quick rain shower or rain storms, snowmelt, openings of the
dams, and even tributary activity will impact the current river conditions.
Here in Michigan, the winters of 2013 and 2014 were the worst in 130 years.
Because of the abnormally cold water temperatures and the increased flows
some rivers and creeks saw very few fish. While other rivers had better runs
than years past. Some rivers had runs that lasted well into June. Remember
folks these fish do not have to run up a river. Just because you fished that
river last year at that time doesn’t mean it will fish this time. Only the right
conditions will bring you a good steelhead run. Hence, why you need all the
right info to help you predict where to fish and when they will be there?
Don’t even think of heading out until you have done all your homework. At a
minimum get the river-level information at least. In the springtime, that’s when
conditions can change overnight, and blow everything out very quickly. By
knowing what rivers are in shape to fish can save you a lot of grief and money.
There are many Web sites like USGS and River Boss, and they are always updated.
Take advantage of today’s technology and the use of your smartphone. I personally
love to use the Fishead App. It’s the best $7.00 you will ever spend. Your favorite
rivers can be programmed and everything is at my fingertips at a moment’s notice
including the weather by the hour and moon phase.
By knowing the flows and the water temperature through a system you can predict
how you fish and where. By
checking NOAA’s National
Weather Service and
knowing the water temps in
the Great Lakes you can
actually predict when your
favorite river will get a run
of fish. Every river has its own run clock. If the river temps are warmer than the big lake
temperatures and you have the right winds along with increased flows, means the fish are
coming. Depending on when those events took place that will determine where the fish will
be either high or low within the system.
Want to fish a new river? Never been there? No worries now that you know when the fish
are coming, your next search should be on google maps. Locate the darker river water on
your computer or right from your phone. Look for any dark holes, steep gradient areas,
bends, downed trees, boat launches or even bridges. Where ever there is a bridge the fish
will be there. Take advantage of technology and plan your trip from home. By knowing
what’s going before you even leave your house that will put you ahead of the game.
Bottom line you need a game plan before you even leave the house and remember Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

Membership Status Report. Mark Davis will attach them.
MSSFA Rep, Eric Braden: Next MSSFA Mtg is 17 Feb. MSSFA is still unable to conduct their raffle program as they do not have a structure
that complies with the Michigan gaming commission. In order to comply they must change how they report and monitor financial matters,
specifically they must have all chapters submit to official financial oversite by the MSSFA board. MSSFA asks that our board vote to approve
giving them financial oversite. After lengthy and inconclusive discussion, Mark Davis moved to table discussion until MWS President is in
attendance. Melissa Gagnon seconded same and it was moved.
MUCC Rep, Matt Lubaway: MUCC has made no resolutions for the net pen issues as of yet. MUCC is concerned that the Agricultural Michigan government departments are trying to take control of decision making on aquaculture and that the DNC should be the organization with
oversite. MUCC is asking us to contact legislators. If questions, ask Matt.

New Business: Karen Wesphal reported that we need a new tumbler for the raffles. Matt Lubaway moved she be authorized to buy another
tumbler up to $200. Adam Trenz Seconded. Motion passed. Board discussed management of camp scholarships. We stressed to Karen
that she not waste time when dealing with the children’s name pulled from the public raffle. That she give the winner one week to respond
and if no response then that public seat is considered not used and she offer the scholarship to club member kids or other acceptable candidates.
Scholarship opportunities were offered to MWS sponsored Salmon in the Classroom teachers to administer. Karen proposed a fund raiser
for a sick kid she knows. Donations Committee, Carmen and Melissa will work on. Karen wants to borrow banquet buckets for an event she
is doing. Club rules dictate she must have a board member supervise.
Meeting adjourned: Robert Grech motioned to adjourn the meeting at 9:15 pm. So moved.

Florida Fishing Report
Submitted by Henry Nabors from March 3rd Text Messages from Gary Towns and Friends
Gary Towns (5:11): Caught my best SNOOK ever … a
few hours ago. Tampa Bay. 36 inches and about 20
pounds. GREAT FIGHT!
Jim Robertson (5:18): GOOD FOR YOU. Were you able to keep it? They
are out of season further south. … (8:07) Congratulations Gary, I’m happy for
you.
Henry Nabors (5:29): Outstanding!!!! Nice!!!
Gary Towns (8:05): No … it was too big to keep. There is a very restrictive
slot limit. It was a thrill to catch … fought like a junkyard dog!
Dan Keifer (5:52): Wow. Gary, what a beautiful fish! Way to go! I didn’t know
they still ran that large! What did it hit? Was it ou of the blue, or was it in one
of those “right where they’re supposed to be?
Randy Emery (5:30): Nice snook; congrats!!!
Gary Towns email reply to Dan: Dan asked if this SNOOK was a catch 'by chance' or if he was targeted. Actually, I was on a two-man charter with Capt John Paiva out of Appollo Beach, Fla. We were
fishing primarily for SNOOK, redfish and sea trout. We ended up catching a few of each! We were
using live scaled sardines for bait....they look a lot like alwives. I'd recommend Capt Paiva to anyone
looking for a nice trip in central Tampa Bay. BTW - there are "trout" in the ocean...see pic.
I think we will hear a lot more about this fish over the next several months!!

QUALITY OF LIFE GROUP ISSUES REPORT ON AQUACULTURE IN THE GREAT LAKES
Submitted by MSSFA Executive Director Dennis Eade
Great news today! The State of Michigan’s Quality of Life Agencies (composed of the MDNR, MDEQ & MDARD) released its final report at noon on
Net-pen Aquaculture in the Great Lakes (http://www.michigan.gov/aquaculture) and the agencies do not recommend pursuing commercial net-pen
aquaculture in the Great Lakes at this time.
Three major reasons were given: “(1) Given the ecological and environmental risks and uncertainties, commercial net-pen aquaculture would pose
significant risks to fishery management and other types of recreation and tourism. Furthermore, both collaborating management interests and tribal nation interests would likely not agree to Michigan moving forward and pose a significant challenge in any attempts to do so. (2) The $3.3 million
to implement a commercial net-pen aquaculture program by the State to protect the public’s interest in the Great Lakes and provide the stated
expected service to the industry are not provided through any conventional funding models available to the QOL agencies. There would need to be
a new funding stream identified for this industry effort to support initial costs as well as the $2.33 million needed annually to monitor and maintain
the program and protection of the state’s resources. This level of public investment for an estimated return of $10 million (under the modeled scenarios for two facilities) does not appear to be a prudent use of the state’s resources at this time. (3) Regulatory authority does not currently exist
to issue registrations for commercial aquaculture in the Great Lakes.”
This report bolsters our position against commercial net-pen aquaculture in the Great Lakes and the legislation being considered in Agriculture Committees of both the State House and Senate. We will continue to monitor how the legislature reacts to this new development and keep you advised.
