This special club is named "The Robb," in honor of former member, Joe Robb. Before his death, Joe was known by all for his golf accomplishments, and he was most proud of shooting his age from age 68 to age 88! The first group of inductees were Ron Lindquist, Dick McGraw, Roger Simmons, Dick Burton, Neil Morrow, Tom Naylon, Willis Brown, Jim Welch, Libby Kitchens and Jim Hawkins. This year, we happily add Irv Lecker, Harry Allcock, Carlos Rodriguez, Earl Marshall, Tom Finley and Gary Graham to the distinguished club. Junior Golf Winter is the perfect time for juniors to work on their game. With the cooler temperatures upon us, it is easier to spend time on the range and putting green. The summer temperatures make practicing for more than 30 minutes exhausting. Bundle up this winter and head to the course. If your child needs a tune up, don’t forget about the junior clinics on Saturday mornings. The “off season” is also a great time to work course management and strategy. Check with the golf shops to find a tee time that is best for junior golfers. There are often slower parts of the day more accommodating to junior play. Junior and Junior Pro tees are set up on all three nines at the Nicklaus Course to encourage play for children of all ages. GOLF GREEN’S CORNER by Jeff Mack Now that the 380 acres of warm season turf maintained on the CCL courses is nearing dormancy, we will begin to shift our efforts toward more “off-season” tasks. Drainage work will begin shortly on select areas throughout the courses. Any drainage work performed in short-cut areas (i.e. fairways and approaches) will be sodded immediately following installation of the drainage network(s), which is a new addition to this process. In doing so, we hope to minimize the negative impacts on playability caused by this type of work. Drainage networks installed in the rough; however, will be encouraged to growover naturally rather than sodded. The greens have healed nicely following the aerification performed approximately one month ago. We are very pleased, and hopefully the membership as well, with the results of this year’s refined aeration schedule. The 2011 greens’ aeration schedule will closely mimic that of 2010. Please note that an unscheduled aerification may be deemed necessary at anytime if an emergency/unforeseen circumstance(s) on the CCL greens were ever to arise. Strict attention has been, and will continue to be, placed on improving the consistency between the hand-raked and machine-raked bunkers. There are approximately 180 bunkers on property, and maintaining them properly is a responsibility that we take very seriously. Particular sections of cart paths have been dotted with paint to obtain estimates for repair. The sections that are now painted are those in the most critical need of repair. There are nearly 14 miles of concrete cart paths amongst the CCL courses that must be maintained. At this time, it is uncertain how soon funding will be available to execute necessary repairs. Selective post-emergent herbicide work has already begun to control winter annual grassy and broadleaf weeds. As a reminder, blue tracker dye is placed in the spray tanks to serve as a visual aid to our spray technicians. The addition of this material helps minimize the risk of areas being skipped and/or being over-sprayed. The blue dye is shortlived and usually disappears within a few days. Although the Bermuda on the CCL courses is not actively growing during this time of year, the membership will still notice the rough mowers being utilized from time to time. These mowers do an excellent job of mulching leaves, which supplements our fleet of tractor-mounted blowers and turf vacuums in keeping the courses consistently “clean”. Frost delays will soon, if not already, come into play. If non-dormant turf (i.e. our Bent putting surfaces) receives any type of traffic while in a frosted state, the membranes of the plant cells can easily rupture causing significant, unsightly damage. It is imperative that we all refrain from any type of activity on the putting surfaces until they are clear of frost. We appreciate the membership’s patience and understanding regarding this matter. It is hard to imagine that 2010 is nearly coming to an end. The CCL Golf/Grounds Maintenance Department is very proud of the product that was delivered to the membership this year. We welcome the opportunity, and the challenges that come with it, of producing even better conditions in 2011. We sincerely thank all of you for your support, and wish each and every one of you a Safe and Happy Holiday Season. As always, if you should have any questions, please feel free to stop me on the course or make an appointment to see me in my office. 2010 Ryder Cup Final Results Champions: Team Latham Jeff Hamilton Don Latham Ray Everts Bob LaBant Alvah Bohannon Steve Euler Everett Wixom Ed Hackman 2nd Place – Team Purdum Steve Edgerton Gary Purdum Pete Hexter Joe Tomlinson Al Wordsworth Jim Matthews Ron Sukoneck Pete Dallow 3rd Place – Team Meeker Derek Woods Dick Burton Dick McGraw Cliff Long Tim Meeker Tom Naylon Bob Davenport Don Rhine Caddyshack Party Saturday, December 4 at 7 p.m. Landfall Clubhouse Ballroom $18++ per person Come celebrate the end of the 2010 golf season. We had a wonderful round in the morning. The Closing Dinner had over 120 MGA Members in attendance. The dinner was highlighted by a fantastic meal prepared by our kitchen staff, the induction of the 2011 MGA Board members and the awarding of: the season ending trophies, prize monies and door prizes (which are nice for those of us who are better at holding a raffle ticket than we are at putting or driving a golf ball). The MGA provides the membership a wonderful forum to play interesting formats on a weekly basis and enjoy the camaraderie and friendship that develops during play. We might not always have our A-game, but we can usually find enough good shots to help out the team. With this in mind, the 2010 MGA season was an overwhelming success. We would like to thank Nick Duffy, our pro staff liaison, for all of his efforts in helping us to make this past year a tremendous success. His efforts on Wednesdays and behind the scenes are very much appreciated by the MGA members. We would also like to thank the MGA board members: Fran Drury, David Ellis, Mark Schwartz, Peter Smoot, Ron Sukoneck, Bert Koudjis, Tony Fisher, John Johnston and Mike Giblin. We would like to welcome our newest board members for 2011: Bill Chepla, Mead Briggs and Fred Campau. The MGA Board would like to thank all of you who enthusiastically participated in many of this year’s events. You served as a source of much fun, constant laughter and newly formed friendships. With your help, we can look forward to more of the same for the 2011 MGA Season. GOLFERS LIVE LONGER by Marshall Newman Dye Shop Assistant A recent study conducted by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that people who play golf have a five year longer life expectancy than non-golfers of the same age, sex, and socioeconomic status. What’s more, those with lower handicaps tend to live even longer. If you have a scientific frame of mind, you are probably laughing to yourself, cum hoc ergo propter hoc (Latin for “with this, therefore because of this”). Correlation does not mean causation! This is true, but take a minute to ponder what could be the possible causes of the statistically proven link between golfers and longer life. It could be from being outdoors in the sunlight, but it could also be from the fulfillment of a primitive instinct to hit things with clubs (I bet tennis and baseball players live longer too). It could be the necessary walking required to reach the next shot, but it could also be from undiscovered nutrients found in sand and dirt that coat a golfer on a windy day. The answers to these questions are arguably uncertain, but one thing is for sure: the Karolinska Institute guarantees golf will make you live longer. TIP OF THE MONTH Trap the Ball for a Better Short Game Work on using your shoulders in order to keep your hands passive, producing the proper shaft lean through impact. Keeping the butt of the club moving ahead of the club head is a must. This ball striking position will insure a proper trapping position thru the hitting area assuring great contact and superb distance control. Good Luck! Stick It Tight! - Greg Guman GOLF s The CCL Ladies Golf Association wrapped up another successful year at their closing meeting and luncheon. Our 18 Advanced Tennis Team this year has earned the right to go to Nationals in Surprise, Az on October 28-31. They represented the whole southern region by winning the NC State Championship and then taking the Southern Sectional Championship. This team included Alex Gaines, Will Kent, AJ Stilwell, Alex Gianoplus, Danielle McGee, Miller Hales, Smith Hinton and Ashleigh Antal. At Nationals, our team won their group in round robin play to earn the right to move onto the semi-finals. The team lost to the defending champions from Texas (Austin Tennis Academy) in the semifinals, but then fought hard to upset Southern California by 1 game (31-30) for third place. This is one of the biggest accomplishments ever from a group of juniors at CCL. This team has won the State and Southern Championships 2 years in a row, finished 4th at Nationals last year and 3rd this year. Wilmington is a small town and this team finished in the final four as the only team not from a tennis academy. The scope of the win becomes clearer when you realize that this team was one of 6000 teams nationwide that played in the 18U Advanced Division. Three of the players on this team will be signing to go and play college tennis next year: Will Kent will be going to UNC-Greensboro, Miller Hales is staying locally to play for UNCW and Ashleigh Antal is heading to Nashville to play for Vanderbilt. After losing in the semifinals our juniors were heartbroken because they really wanted to bring the title home. It took a lot of courage to go out after the loss to Texas, and play with so much passion to finish with a win for 3rd. It was even more special that these kids have grown up with each other in this community, pushed each other on the courts and share a moment together that they will never forget. Over exposure to basketball in March drives many to madness, so keep your basketball jersey on from the night (or week) before and come out marathon morning and release some of your exhilaration (or exasperation) by cheering on the runners. Alumni groups have already been contacted to take over aid stations outside Landfall, but Landfall residents need to show ‘em how it’s really done! Put on your school logo, grab your fellow alumni, decorate your yard with your team’s colors and have a front-yard breakfast party, or volunteer to man an aid station or a street corner in Landfall. We need your help and the runners really appreciate your enthusiasm. By far, the majority of letters that were received from runners this past spring extolled their positive experiences while running through Landfall. Let’s raise the bar and make 2011 even better! Kenan Chapel's 2010 Holiday Program – December 5 at 5 p.m. – Reception to follow Dye Clubhouse Complimentary tickets are available two weeks prior to the event at the NE Branch of the New Hanover County Library. MAYOR'S BRUNCH Sunday, January 23, 2011 at noon e The annual Mayor's Brunch with mayor Bill Saffo will take place at the Landfall Clubhouse. Mark the date. Robert Burns' Birthday The Great Oaks Club by Maria Johnson The busy holidays are upon us. Our Holiday Tea and Landfall House Tour is on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 2:30 p.m. If you haven't called the club for your reservation, be sure to do so. Those who are not Landfall club members can send a check to Cecile Blankenhorn at 2009 Seawind Lane. The cost is $13 and the check is made out to Great Oaks. Following our tea, Ann Jones will hand out directions to the homes of our gracious hosts. Please remember, this event is open to members of Great Oaks only. On Saturday, Dec. 11, we invite friends and family of Great Oaks members to New Bern to experience an 18th century Christmas celebration. We will leave from the Arboretum gate at 3:15p.m. and arrive in New Bern in time to walk around town before enjoying supper at Stanly Hall Cafe, 247 Craven St. At 8 p.m. we are due to tour Tryon Palace, which is decorated for the season. There will be performances by the Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps, the Jonkonnu troupe and an assortment of other performers. The evening ends with a fireworks display over the south lawn. We expect to depart about 9:30 p.m. The cost of the bus and tour tickets will be $50 a person, if we have 25 people. If we have more join us, the cost will be adjusted. Supper will include a choice of three entrees, dessert and a beverage and will cost $25 a person, exclusive of bar drinks. Checks will be made out to Great Oaks and sent to Cecile Blankenhorn. The trip to Atlanta will be April 27-30. The approximate base price will be $380 for 3 nights lodging, the bus, a home tour, tour of the Governor's Mansion, snacks, boxed lunch, Swan House and a tip for our bus driver. There will be itinerary choices and a $100 non-refundable deposit will be due in January. It sounds like a great trip! Dr. Errante was our guest speaker for October and he was wonderful. He began his presentation playing selections of past Wilmington Symphony Orchestra events. We heard opera, jazz, broadway tunes, a spanish guitar and the full orchestra. He plans to continue to improve both the quality and variety of the music offered. On December 4 and 5, he will present a very ambitious undertaking, Hansel and Gretel. Remember, you can join us at anytime to enjoy these monthly programs. The cost is only $25 a year. Our food donations will be going to the Good Shephard this month.
