EXPLORE HIDDEN MYANMAR,
VIETNAM & SOUTH EAST ASIA WITH
AUSTRALIA'S PIONEERING CRUISE LINE
Asia
A passion for expedition cruising
For over 30 years, Coral Expeditions has focused on
small ship expeditions to faraway lands.
SPOTLIGHT ON NATURE AND CULTURES
We believe many remarkable parts of the Australasian region
are best experienced from sea. Our ships, marine staff and
expedition teams are dedicated to getting you up close and
personal with nature’s wonders, and the cultural diversity of
our world. In contrast to traditional cruising, we avoid long
sea days and try to maximise time off the ship. Our ships
are owned by us and designed specifically to enhance the
expedition experience. We do not charter third-party vessels
or outsource any part of our marine operations. Our trips are
bespoke and sometimes not commercially justifiable, but we
believe it results in unique guest experiences.
AN AUSTRALIAN ETHOS
Coral Expeditions is unique in operating a fleet of Australianflagged and crewed vessels. We are the longest standing
operator of Australia-based passenger ships. Our on board
atmosphere reflects our heritage – we are proud of our
professional service and produce-driven, modern Australian
cuisine. We maintain the highest standards of marine
and passenger safety; we follow Australian regulatory
requirements in our staffing and operations.

RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
We believe that tourism doesn’t have to come at a cost
to the environment. We were one of the early pioneers of
environmentally sensitive cruising, starting out on the
Great Barrier Reef. We remain firmly committed to promoting
sustainability and minimising environmental impact while
sharing some of the world’s most incredible places with
travellers from around the world.
NO QUEUES, NO WAITING
Our ships are small enough to allow us to board and disembark
much quicker than larger vessels. There is minimal waiting.
Their shallow draughts allow them to get to locations larger
ships cannot.
OUR HERITAGE
Started by a fisherman-entrepreneur with a passion for life at sea,
Coral Expeditions was the brainchild of Captain Tony Briggs, who started
the company back in 1983 with a converted World War II submarine chaser.
Moving from Townsville to its current base in Cairns, the gateway to the
Great Barrier Reef, in 2002, the company pioneered small ship expeditionstyle cruising in the Kimberley, the Islands of the South Pacific and
Papua New Guinea.
Many of the additions and developments during this period were innovative
for the industry, including the use of interpretive guides and the build
and launch of Coral Discoverer (formerly Oceanic Discoverer) in 2005 –
a landmark vessel with global ocean capabilities built to very high standards
in Australia. The Coral Discoverer remains the only Australian-flagged
passenger vessel operating unrestricted international voyages.
Today, the Coral Expeditions fleet has grown to include three purpose-built
small ships that can be found anywhere from the tropical waters of the
Great Barrier Reef to the rugged coast of Tasmania and now, the coastal
villages and great rivers of South East Asia. Coral Expeditions remain the
only major operator of extended small ship cruises on the Great Barrier Reef.

The coral expeditions experience
Our guests come to us because of our unique destinations and shore-rich programmes.
ALL-INCLUSIVE EXCURSIONS
With a strong focus on visiting places not often touched by
tourists, our shore excursions are designed to promote local
interaction and cultural exchange. One of the great benefits
of travelling on a small ship is our ability to make impromptu
stops. Our small group size ensures that our shore excursions
are comfortable and enjoyable, but also have minimal impact on
the communities and environments we visit. Most activities are
suitable for all fitness levels; when a higher than normal level
of fitness is required for a particular excursion, your Expedition
Leader will advise you accordingly. You can expect one or
two shore or in-sea activities each day, all included in your
cruise price.
EXPEDITION TEAM
On each voyage, we will have an Expedition Leader who is a
Coral Expeditions staff member and takes overall leadership
of our expedition programme. Our Expedition Leaders are
typically Coral Expeditions veterans who bring the depth
of experience required to put together daily programmes
given prevailing weather and local conditions. They are
complemented by Expedition Staff who are experts in the
geology, history or flora and fauna of the Asian region.
EXPEDITION EQUIPMENT
We recognise that our guests aren’t armchair travellers.
One of the distinctive features of the Coral Expeditions’ ships is
their tender capabilities. Each ship carries an “Xplorer” which
is hydraulically lowered and lifted, enabling guests to transfer
for excursions right off the main deck. The Coral Discoverer’s
Xplorer can carry all passengers at the same time.
From the crystal clear beauty surrounding the Perhentian
Islands to the rainbow reefs of the Mergui Archipelago and
the imposing limestone karsts of Halong Bay, jumping into
the aquatic wonders of Asia is made easy when travelling with
Coral Expeditions.
Our range of snorkelling and SCUBA gear allows our guests
to really make the most of their time spent in coastal regions.
We also carry kayaks and zodiacs enabling more intrepid
excursions when conditions permit. When wanting to stay
above water, our glass bottom boat makes viewing coral and
sea life easy.

LIFE ON BOARD
RELAXED ENVIRONMENT
Our ship environment is designed to be casual. There is no
dress code or assigned seating at meal times. Our ship layout
encourages mingling. Complimentary coffee and tea stations
are open throughout the day in the lounge and dining areas.
There are no minibars or in-room televisions, but there is
plenty of common space. Social interaction amongst our
guests is a very important aspect of the Coral Expeditions
experience. Also, we operate an open bridge policy and
encourage travellers to visit the bridge and observe ship
operations. Our captains enjoy talking to you – test them out!
YOU ESPECIALLY TO THE CHEFS –
“THANK
OUR VEGAN MEALS WERE ALL DELICIOUS
”
JUDY & PHIL H., PAPUA NEW GUINEA, NOVEMBER 2015

CUISINE AND WINE
Our cuisine is fresh and small batch – with no more than
72 passengers, our chefs can take a more indulgent
approach to cooking. Our meals tend to be hearty, modern
Australian with influences and produce from the regions we
are passing through. Dietary restrictions can be catered for
with two weeks notice. We are proud of our winelist – it is an
abbreviated selection that reflects the depth and variety of
the Australian wine scene. House wine and beers at mealtime
are included on our Asian itineraries. Our ships also feature
artisanal Australian and New Zealand spirits – all our ships
carry barrels of slowly ageing Tasmanian single malt whisky.
Sample a dram after dinner!
THE CORAL DISCOVERER
YOUR EXPEDITION SHIP
The state-of-the-art Coral Discoverer was built in Australia,
and launched in 2005 and is purpose-built for cruising in the
tropical regions of South East Asia and the Pacific Ocean.
With stylish furnishings, generous decks and modern facilities,
the Coral Discoverer accommodates just 72 guests in
36 spacious staterooms. With a cruising speed of 12 knots,
Coral Discoverer’s shallow draught allows access to even
the most isolated and remote locations of South East Asia,
beyond the reach of most other ships. Coral Discoverer is
fully SOLAS compliant, is equipped with the latest navigation
technology and communications equipment and is actively
stabilised to ensure comfortable cruising in open seas.
ONGOING IMPROVEMENTS
In 2016 ahead of the Asian season, the Coral Discoverer will
receive a comprehensive refit seeing the addition of a new
Sun Deck Bar and lounge area with a small fitness corner,
new soft furnishings throughout the ship, revamped lecture
lounge, and a new class of Bridge Deck Staterooms with private
balconies allowing you moments of privacy when you really
want to get away from it all.
These additions will preserve the expedition character of
the Coral Discoverer but enhance guest comfort making her
amongst the most desirable small cruise ships afloat today.

SELECTED SENIOR STAFF
GARY WILSON
CAPTAIN STEVE COX
EXPEDITION LEADER
PETER MILLER
ASST. EXPEDITION LEADER (INDONESIA)
With over two decades at sea, Captain Gary is
the Senior Master of the Coral Expeditions fleet.
He has been commanding the Coral Discoverer
for over four years. Gary is a consummate
professional who not only enjoys bridge watchkeeping and ship handling but also mingling with
travellers. Gary loves the open bridge policy of
Coral Expeditions and sharing his passion for
ships and ocean passages with guests.
Steve, our company’s Senior Expedition Leader,
has been at Coral Expeditions for over seven
years having previously worked as a Tour Guide,
a Dive Instructor and a professional cricketer.
With a growing reputation for expedition travel
in South East Asia and Indonesia particularly,
Peter joins our team to provide expert
commentary and guidance on our trips involving
the Indonesian archipelago. Peter brings an
intimate knowledge of the people and cultures
of this diverse region and takes great pleasure in
sharing this with travellers from all over the world.
Captain Gary lists Mesemta on the island of Misool
in Raja Ampat as one of his favourite places
because of its spectacular location and as it is
a real challenge to get the ship into such a tiny
anchorage. Gary is looking forward to taking his
guests to new waters of South East Asia.
With such a varied career and skill set, he is well
equipped to lead our Expedition Team for Asia.
Steve does interpretations and presentations
preparing guests for shore excursions ahead and
then plans and manages all off-ship water and
land-based activities. He enjoys photography,
interacting with guests and ensuring everyone’s
expectations are more than met.
Steve rates swimming with the whale sharks
at Cenderawasih Bay, West Papua as one of
his best ‘on the job with Coral Expeditions’
experiences and looks forward to sharing such
moments with guests during the Asia cruises.
Peter rates kayaking the Komodo Islands,
climbing Mt Rinjani on Lombok and getting up
close and personal with the orangutans of
Tanjung Puting National Park as three of his
all-time favourite experiences.
Peter will join our expeditions from Kalimantan
to Singapore and Singapore to Darwin.
Please note
Coral Expeditions cruises offer something so unique that many of our guests choose to return
again and again to experience the world the Coral Expeditions way.
That’s why we’ve created the Xplorers Club, our community of pioneering travellers who want to
spend their time enjoying genuine experiences in remote and exotic destinations.
The Xplorers Club is our way of rewarding our guests for choosing to travel with us. When you
travel with us, you automatically become a member of the Xplorers Club, with your membership
activated as soon as you complete your first cruise.
With three tiers of membership on offer, the more cruises you enjoy the greater your future
rewards will be. Your membership level is calculated by the number of nights you have spent
aboard our ships over your lifetime, so whether you’re a frequent cruiser who travels with us
each year, or someone who travels a little less frequently, you’ll be rewarded for choosing to
explore the world with us.
Visit our website to find out more about the Xplorers Club tiers as well as how to access
exclusive offers and discounts.
6
These are expedition itineraries covering
remote regions rarely visited by cruise ships.
Your captain and Expedition Team will make
changes to the daily schedule to maximise
the guest experience given the weather,
local environment and safety considerations.
As such, please treat the daily schedule
listed on the itineraries as indicative only.
In particular, any river voyages are susceptible
to tides and local pilotage and may be delayed
or cancelled on some occasions.
Further, while we have made every preparation,
immigration clearances for the ship are
in remote stations and procedural delays
may occur.
Our shore excursions are designed for
people of average fitness and all age groups.
When there is an activity such as a hike
that requires a higher than average fitness
level, your Expedition Leader will advise
you beforehand. Guests who choose not to
participate in such activities will be provided
less strenuous alternatives.

Singapore to Yangon A PASSAGE TO LOST MYANMAR
BURMA RAILWAY MEMORIAL AT THANBYUZAYAT
The war cemetery and memorial at
Thanbyuzayat is one of three cemeteries associated with the infamous ‘Death Railway’
constructed by the Japanese military using forced local and POW labour during World War II.
An estimated 90,000 local workers (mostly Burmese and Malaysian) and 12,621 POWs died
in its construction. Two labour forces, one based in Siam (Thailand) and the other in Burma
(Myanmar) worked from opposite ends of the line towards the centre. The most famous (and
accessible) of the three cemeteries is at Kanchanaburi in Thailand. The Thanbyuzayat cemetery
at the Burmese end of the railway is 370km from Yangon and 65km from Mawlamyine, and
has 3,770 graves including 1,355 Australians, 1,588 British and 621 Dutch.

Yangon to Singapore GLIMPSES OF LOST MYANMAR
THE MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO
The Mergui is a group of about 800 islands on the remote south
of the Myanmar coastline. Isolated for centuries until Myanmar started opening up two decades
ago, this is a region of stunning beauty with beaches, stretches of mangroves and pristine coral.
The archipelago’s isolation from human influence has resulted in a great diversity of flora and
fauna, including animals such as deer, monkeys, wild swine and tropical birds such as hornbills.
The local people are an ethnic minority called the Moken. They are a sea-dwelling people and they
follow a traditional way of life, doing things such as fishing and building boats very much the
way they have done for centuries. They can be found living on their traditional boats during the
dry season, but usually keep to land in the rainy season. Today, the only way to visit the Mergui
Islands is on board a diving boat from Thailand, or on your Coral Expeditions cruise.

CON SON ISLAND Isolated from the Vietnamese mainland, the Con Dao Islands (of which
Con Son is the largest) has a remarkable history. Mentioned in Ptolemy’s Geography as the Isles
of the Satyrs, it came under French rule as Grande Condor following the Treaty of Versailles
in 1787. Its subsequent history as a penal colony began when the French colonial government
established a prison to house political detainees in 1861. In 1954, the South Vietnamese
government took over the prison. It remained a notorious holding area for prisoners till 1975
when the war ended. Today, the Con Dao Islands are turning heads thanks to their striking
natural beauty. Con Son is ringed with lovely beaches, coral reefs and scenic bays, and remains
partially covered in thick forests. In addition to hiking, diving and exploring empty coastal roads
and deserted beaches, there are some excellent wildlife-watching opportunities. Roughly 80%
of the land area in the island chain is part of Con Dao National Park, which protects Vietnam’s
most important sea turtle nesting grounds.

A CLASSIC VOYAGE THROUGH OLD VIETNAM
Hanoi
Haiphong
HOI AN “Hoi An ancient town is located in Vietnam’s central
Quang Nam Province, on the north bank near the mouth of the
Thu Bon River…It is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a
small-scale trading port active the during the 15th to 19th centuries
which traded widely, both with the countries of South East and
East Asia and with the rest of the world. Its decline in the later
19th century ensured that it has retained its traditional urban tissue
to a remarkable degree. The town reflects a fusion of indigenous
and foreign cultures (principally Chinese and Japanese with later
European influences) that combined to produce this unique survival”.

a volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between the
islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian province of
Lampung. The name refers to the surrounding island group of
three volcanic peaks which was obliterated in a cataclysmic
1883 eruption, unleashing huge tsunamis killing more than
36,000 people. The explosion is considered to be the loudest
sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being
heard up to 4,800km (3,000 miles) from its point of origin.
In 1927 a new island, Anak Krakatua, or "Child of Krakatoa",
emerged from the caldera formed in 1883 and is the current
location of eruptive activity. As of late 2011, this island
has a radius of roughly two kilometres, and a high point of
about 324 metres (1,063 ft) above sea level, growing five
metres each year.

CAMP LEAKEY
Located in the Tanjung Puting National Reserve (now National Park)
in South Central Borneo, Camp Leakey was established in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas
and former spouse Rod Brindamour. The purpose of the program was and continues to be
the study of the behavior and ecology of wild orangutans as well as the conservation of
wild orangutan populations and their rain forest habitat. Originally consisting of just two
huts, Camp Leakey is now an assemblage of permanent wooden structures designed to
provide a base for scientists, staff, students, and Park Rangers.

passenger or the passenger’s property. No variation or
waiver of any term or condition of these Cruise Ticket
Conditions will have any effect unless they are in writing
and signed by the carrier.
No undertaking, guarantee or warranty is given or shall
be implied as to the seaworthiness, fitness or condition
of the Ship. In addition to any other limitation of liability
contained in these Cruise Ticket Conditions the carrier
shall have the benefit of any statutory limitation of liability
available in Queensland including but not limited to the
Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims Act
1989 (Cwth).
Where tours and services of operators other than the
carrier are engaged e.g. tour operators and hoteliers,
which are not under the control of the carrier,
whilst the carrier takes all reasonable care in selecting
these operators it cannot accept responsibility for those
operators’ conduct or the conduct of their representative
employees or agents or for any ramifications of that
conduct.
12. PASSPORT AND ENTRY VISAS: It is a requirement
that all passengers have a valid passport and appropriate
visa/travel permits for the countries to be visited. Passport
must have a validity of more than six months beyond the
duration of travel. The company cannot be responsible
for any travel restrictions or expenses arising through
passengers not having relevant documentation.
13. PASSENGER BAGGAGE: All baggage brought on
board the Ship by a passenger remains in the possession
and control of the passenger during the Cruise and must
be stored and kept in the cabin allocated to the passenger.
The carrier has made recommendations with respect to
baggage in the brochure. Baggage should be prominently
marked with the name and address of the passenger. The
passenger must not bring on board the Ship in baggage
or otherwise any dangerous or inflammable substance
including any prohibited drug or non-prescribed drug.
Liquor laws prohibit passengers from bringing supplies of
alcohol or liquor on board the Ship. Baggage remaining
unclaimed on arrival of the Ship will be stored at the
passenger’s sole risk and expense. The carrier is not
responsible for money, jewellery, documents and any
other valuables which passengers keep on their person,
in their cabins or in their baggage and the carrier strongly
recommends that passengers obtain adequate insurance
to cover any loss or damage in this respect. In no event will
the carrier’s responsibility or liability to the passenger for
loss of baggage or personal effects exceed US$100 and
the passenger agrees to indemnify and keep indemnified
the carrier from and against any claims made against the
carrier in excess of this amount in this respect.
14. RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES: The carrier will not
be liable to passengers for any injuries or damage which
occur while the passenger is participating in recreational
activities aboard the Vessel or otherwise including but not
limited to passenger participating in snorkelling or scuba
diving programmes. By utilising these facilities passengers
agree to assume all risks associated with those activities
and fully release and discharge the carrier from any and
all claims, demands, damages, causes of action, present or
future, resulting from or arising out of the passenger’s use
of or participation in those facilities. The passenger may
be required to sign a release or waiver prior to undertaking
these activities and the carrier will be entitled to refuse to
allow the passenger to participate in those activities if the
waiver or release is not signed by the passenger prior to
participation in those activities.
15. APPLICABLE LAW: Should any provision of these
Cruise Ticket Conditions be contrary to or invalid by
virtue of the laws of Queensland or the Commonwealth
of Australia or for any other reason the relevant provision
will be deemed to be severed from these Cruise Ticket
Conditions and shall be of no effect but all remaining
provisions shall remain in full force and effect. These
Cruise Ticket Conditions shall be governed in all respects
by the laws of Queensland and the passenger agrees that
any claims or disputes between the passenger and the
carrier in connection with these Cruise Ticket Conditions
shall be commenced, filed and litigated before a Court of
proper jurisdiction in Queensland and if possible in the City
of Townsville.
16. WHAT TO EXPECT: For most activities a relatively low
level of exertion is required. You will need to climb into and
out of zodiacs and other excursion tenders for excursions
ashore: there will be staff and crew members on hand
to assist. Ashore, you must be able to walk moderate
distances over sometimes rough terrain. There are no
lifts on Coral Expeditions ships and the stairways between
decks are steep, so a reasonable agility is required.
Participants will most enjoy the remarkable opportunities
these expeditions offer if they travel with a spirit of
adventure.
