WHEN IS GREEN NOT
“GREEN”?
Answer: When it’s a palm frond
whether green, brown or dead!
Palm fronds are garbage and
should be placed in the garbage bin
– NOT the green recycling bin.
Palm fronds are fibrous and damage the recycling chippers. When
a palm frond is placed in the green
bin, the whole bin becomes garbage, costing VO more dollars to
remove it! Please do your part to
keep our green bin green.

such emergencies. They will

Have you heard about the Boyce

hand to tell you all about it. Find
out what their hours are, the cost
to tour it, who built it and when
all of this came about. Just show

Planning Committee
The East Pool Bathhouse/Exercise Room/Wellness Center. The plumbing at
the east pool has shown signs of similar deterioration as the West Pool. These
pipes are cast iron and after forty years of continual routing to clean hair and
blockages, they are thinned and breaking. After successfully clearing a major
blockage last season, we have our fingers crossed in hopes that we can get
through each season without having to shut down or bring in port-a-potties and
portable showers. Health laws require both for the pool to remain open.
In last year's survey, a sizable number of people put down a desire for better
fitness facilities, a separate heating/cooling system between the fitness and bath
areas, a central location for fitness classes and a wellness center. A better fitness
center has been a high priority since the original survey 10 years ago. At a
meeting of interested lot owners at the end of last season, it was pretty much
unanimous that we should start from scratch rather than try to remodel the
existing building. At first, the Condo Board and the Planning Committee
considered trying to do this project in two phases. But after considering the
following factors:
•
additional cost of two building permits
•
cost of setting up the construction site twice
•
building, then tearing out one wall to add the wellness center
•
the fact that the wellness center is much cheaper per square foot than
the bathhouse and exercise room
•
costs are cheaper today than they will be down the road
it was the recommendation of the Planning Committee to do the whole project at
one time. This project is currently in the design stage and plans will be available for
viewing and comments later this year or at the start of next season.
Stained Glass and Wood Carvers. Finding separate facilities for these two clubs
has been stuck on the back burner for 7 years. While the Woodcarvers Club has
stayed about the same size, Stained Glass has grown to over 150 members. Each
club gets to use the shop 3 days a week and then they share a day. Work space is
inadequate and safety has become an issue for a variety of reasons. An initial
suggestion was to get a portable building as a temporary solution. Some planning
members feel that “temporary” tends to become permanent and that all buildings
need to conform in style. At a joint meeting between the Condo Board, Social
Board and Planning Committee, it was decided to design a structure using preengineered steel, which in our first estimates was a very reasonable cost. The
location would be in the southeast corner of Venture Out (near the Broadway wall
just west of the RV wash).
Bocce Ball Expansion: Four years ago the Bocce Ball Club requested two
additional lanes due the increasing membership. Unfortunately, after much effort, it
was accepted that the city would not allow the second lane without thousands of
dollars of work on the retention basin. The design was scaled back to one additional
lane. In addition, a new building has been recommended to replace the shed which
will include an area to be used for serving during the potluck fun nights and other
events. The bids are being presented to the Condominium Board for implementation
of this project. The funding of this project will be a joint effort between the Social
Club Board and the Condominium Association Board.
Going Solar. Electrical costs are an on-going and ever increasing expense and one
of the major operational costs at Venture Out. Last year, our cost for electricity was
a whopping $156,900. A few weeks ago our park manager received a proposal to
install a solar system at the 6 highest-use facilities in the park. Many residents have
asked about the use of solar in the park, so a subcommittee was formed to study this
proposal and other possible options. The subcommittee is currently seeking detailed
proposals from several other companies that include lease/purchase options that
would not require an assessment. The subcommittee is meeting one or two times a
week in hopes of having an informed presentation for the March 13th Town Hall
Meeting.
The Planning committee continues to meet every Wednesday in the
Arts and Crafts room at 2:00 pm.

February 24, 2012
This week’s occupancy is 1515 or 87% vs. 1533 last week and 1514 for the year prior. There
are 420 renters in the park.
In the past few weeks we have tested three different types of street sweepers in the park. We
found that the dry vacuum manufactured by Tennant did the best job. This is one of the two dealers in town that
also does the maintenance on the equipment, which is a major consideration when purchasing. Interestingly enough,
one of our residents told me about this sweeper after we had tested it and told me that it is manufactured in the U.S.
and that all parts are also manufactured here, so that it would be a preferable unit to buy. It should be noted that in
spite of everyone’s opinion that a wet vacuum system would be better, it did not do the better job. The representatives
tell us that is because the water makes the dirt stick to the pavement and its easier to pick up dry dust and dirt rather
than wet. For those of us who vacuum a carpet now and then, that makes perfect sense. We will discuss this In depth
at budget. This is a reserve item.
We have been spending the better part of the last three weeks getting ready for Budget, meeting with contactors and
getting bids on everything from asphalt to tree trimming. One thing we are finding is that with the spike in oil prices
and the anticipated $5.00 a gallon for gas this summer, we are seeing major increases in the cost of asphalt and tree
trimming to just name two items. Budget meetings start next Monday at the Oasis at 9:00 am. All transmittals are
also reviewed at budget time by the Board for funding, so if you have a specific transmittal working through the system
and you want to know what is happening, this is a good time to attend.
I have been spending some time with Ken Dowlin Chairman of the Legislative Action Committee. Once again, he
and Carol Perkinson and their band of dedicated volunteers have been bird dogging the legislature. There are three
significant bills and the two most troubling are ones that would allow people to essentially never pay an assessment
in the park, once they bought in until the time of transfer to the next lot owner. Can you imagine someone living in
the park for 20 years and never paying anything? Well that is the gist of this legislation.
The second most troublesome is that Board members would be held personally responsible for court costs if they
“substantially lost” a court case. In my opinion these two bills were written as a back door way of destroying a Home
Owners Association. # 1 you have no power to collect fees and # 2 You have no one to run the Association. They
are both pretty outrageous and clearly they have not thought through the consequences of their actions. Venture
Out’s attorney also thinks they stand a good chance of being unconstitutional, however that takes time and money
to dispute them. About a thousand angry letters is a lot cheaper. Ken talked to one Legislator who put their name
on the bill as a sponsor... and they had not even read the bill or even understood what it was about. So perhaps the
others did too and it’s time to educate them. You will see postings on the Condo Board Bulletin Board and a
FASTMAIL is coming out with the information as well. We hope that everyone will take the time to write at least
one letter.
Finally in closing, we are in the process of filming the clubs and the activities in the park, to finish up the web site.
There is a Property Map on the web site that says “video tour.” There will be a series of cameras on this map and
when you click on the camera that is over for instance ‘Lawn Bowling’ up will pop a video showing the club in action.
We are trying to do this with every club and activity that we have. This summer we will stitch these all together in
a small video presentation that will also be on the Web site and will be used as a marketing tool for future lot owners.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Recreation Update
February 24, 2012
If you’re 90 years of age or older, your breakfast tomorrow is on Venture Out! Come to the
Baja Bistro anytime between7:30 am and 9:30 am and we’ll see you get a delicious breakfast
of scrambled eggs loaded with cheese, ham and green peppers, toast, hash browns, juice and
coffee. You’ll even have a table reserved especially for you! Everyone else is invited but they
must pay the $4.00 for the meal. Sometimes there are benefits to being older!
Congratulations must be extended to the Woodshop for their over-the-top raffle this season. They raised $3,533 in a
two week time period. Outstanding effort even if I didn’t win. Again.
The Annual Can/Am Softball Games will be held Wednesday, February 29 at Sunshine Acres beginning at noon. Head
on over to the ball field and support our local teams with an afternoon of men’s and women’s competitive play. Turn
left on Higley (North) and drive until you see Sunshine Acres Children’s Home on your right hand side (East) .
Help! Our wood supply for the March Weenie Roasts is pretty meager. Should you have anything you could contribute
please add to the small pile which is located behind the Oasis at the Higley wall. I know there are mountains of scrap
wood out there someplace!
Tickets are on sale from the Activity Office as well as at the door for the Knox Brothers Gospel Concert to be held
in the Buena Vista Ballroom beginning at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, February 29. This is a repeat performance by a talented
family of six brothers. If it was good the first time... and it was... it’s bound to be better the second time around!
Benito, Evolution, Hamlet II, Tomb Raider and Blue Crush. These are titles to a few of the new movies recently
added to our DVD Library. Stop into the Activity Office and check out the huge selection. Two movies may be
borrowed for up to three days. Free!
Please note the Tennis Club’s Auction & Bake Sale originally planned for March 2 has been rescheduled to March 9.
Another of the popular Inspirational Sing-a-Longs is scheduled for this Sunday at 7:00pm in the Buena Vista Ballroom.
A lovely evening with free admittance.
Members of the Shuffleboard Club, under the direction of Diane and Dave Obert, outdid themselves with last week’s
Pork Loin Dinner. For those who missed it... the club had carving stations which resulted in the best tasting, mouthwatering pork ever presented in Venture Out. A great dinner… a great club!
The biggest show of the year is just around the corner! Get your tickets today for the Scottsdale Performing Arts
performance of “Late Nite Catechism” to be presented on Venture Out’s stage Saturday, March 3. You don’t have
to be Catholic to thoroughly love this show. It is more than a hoot... it’s a Mega Hoot!
The Mesa Fire Department has children’s car seats on loan for free. Now that’s a bit of trivia which might be worth
knowing when the grandkids come to visit. Simply call to set up an appointment. Installation is part of the package.
Thanks to the efforts of resident Colleen Beyer, we are now collecting “Box Tops” for education to benefit Sunshine
Acres. The drop-off container is located in the Annex Breezeway.
Did you know you don’t have to be a member of ANY club to use the putting greens or to take part in the monthly
putting tournaments? Just grab your putter, ball and go for it!
The Fine Art Show and Sale is this coming Thursday, March 1 from 10:00am-2:00pm in the Baja Bistro. Come view
the talent of your friends and neighbors and be prepared to find that perfect piece of art for your living room. The VO
Grill will be open with Chef Todd manning the grill, so why not stay for lunch?
Do we have any individuals in the park who are into radio control airplanes? I have had some inquiries as to such and
am on a mission to find the answer. If you are such a person please drop me an email at [email protected].
Remember! Another fabulous Jam Session has been scheduled for this Sunday at 2:00 pm in the Buena Vista Ballroom.
See you for Enchiladas on Monday!

the traditional Catholic schools. Well, maybe not that traditional! Whether or not you are Catholic, you, as a member of
the audience, will become a student in a hilarious adult catechism class. Late Nite Catechism is a sharp satire, but never
mean. It is simply an evening of fun and laughter.

Crazy For You is the story of Bobby Child,
a well-to-do 1930’s big city guy whose
dream in life is to dance. Despite the serious efforts of his mother and soon-to-beex-fiancee, Bobby achieves his dream!
Filled with the classic tunes of George &
Ira Gerswin, Crazy For You is a high-energy musical comedy with showmanship,
fabulous dance numbers, sentiment, and
true love. Winner of three Tony awards including Best Musical, you’d be crazy to
miss this show!

GOSPEL CONCERT FEATURING THE
KNOX BROTHERS
Return
Appearance
by Request!
Wednesday • February 29
7:00 pm • Buena Vista Ballroom
Get ready for some OLD TIME SOUTHERN GOSPEL music. The six singers really
are brothers, raised in a biblically-based, hard-working farm background. Their
singing ministry has spanned more than four decades, ranging from small churches
to the Great Western Fan Festival (for eleven years), hosting eleven cruises including the Sapphire Princess inside passage cruise, and the Pacific Gospel Music
Association’s annual festival in Eugene, Oregon. The Knox Brothers not only sing,
but do their own instrumentation, even on their albums. You’ll love the harmony and
big bass voice. So get your foot tapping ready and prepare to have your heart
warmed by some great gospel. The Knox Brothers are coming to VO!
Tickets $9.00 available from the
Activity Office and at the door
