Best Kept Secret Auction
This Friday At Triangle
By Linda Rupp
The Women’s Health Coalition is counting down the
days until the Best Kept Secret Auction being held at the
Triangle Nite Club on Friday, May 11. The evening will begin
with a social hour starting at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres provided. At 7 p.m., the collection will be auctioned off by Dan
Goss.
This is the second annual Best Kept Secret, an awareness event for breast and cervical cancer. We have asked
organizations and individuals in the county to decorate
themed brassieres in a creative and entertaining way and
we currently have 25 beautiful and fun bras donated. The
money raised is used to assist women who are uninsured or
underinsured, meet income guidelines, but are not age appropriate for the Montana Breast and Cervical Health Program to receive free or low cost mammograms and pap tests.
So, plan on attending the Best Kept Secret Auction. There
is no admittance fee and it promises to be a night of fun.
During the social hour and after, the auction music will
be provided by “Banned Again”.
It is still not too late to get your entry in to the Richland
County Health Department. We will accept bras up until the
night of the auction but to be in the program you must have
your bra to us no later then Wednesday, May 9.
“Because I Love You” Artist is Kathy Nicholson of
the Candy Bouquet.
“Hunting for a Cure” Artists are Melissa Quilling and
Michelle Jensen of KGCX Eagle 93.1.
Change Of Owners
Brent Torgerson ceremoniously turns over the keys
to Smokey's Bar & Casino in Bainville to the new
owner, Rayne Romo.
Al & Rayne Romo New
Owners Of Smokey's
Al and Rayne Romo of Bainville have purchased
Smokey's Bar & Casino in Bainville from Brent and Carrie
Torgerson of Sidney.
Torgerson owned the establishment in his hometown
for seven years. Rayne, Carrie's sister, has managed
Smokey's since the Torgersons purchased the business.
Romos live in Bainville. Al farms in the Bainville area.
"We're glad to be able to sell it to Al and Rayne. They've
been involved since day one. Thanks to everyone for their
patronage and we're sure everyone will continue to support
the business as they have in the past," Torgerson said.
Romo said, "We're excited about the opportunity to own
Smokey's. No big changes are planned, just the same great
service and fun times."
"We're planning our big grand opening in September in
conjunction with our annual corn feed," Romo added.
Burgers & Brats In Park Again Thurs.
Sidney High School wrestling will be continuing their
burger and brat fundraiser this Thursday at Veteran's Memorial Park from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
Look for the banner by the train engine—that's where
the action is as wrestlers and their parents serve up delicious burgers, brats, beans and chips.
Enjoy supper in the park or take home a bag of food for
the entire family.
Sidney Wrestling Coach Guy Melby's wrestling program
is in the process of rebuilding and is raising funds to take a
Sidney team to the National Scholastic Duals in Orlando in
June.

The Rossols have
changed the look inside the
building. They had their
daughter-in-law, Afton RayRossol paint murals on the
walls in the restaurant.

at 102 E. Main, Sidney, and
can be reached at 406-4331839 for carryout orders.

“Opera In The Badlands”
Coming To Watford City May 22
Watford City is bringing opera to the Badlands!
The Fargo-Moorhead
Opera Company, in cooperation with the North Dakota Council on the Arts,
is mounting a touring production of American composer Michael Ching’s
“Corps of Discovery”.
The opera, based on
the story of the Lewis and
Clark Expedition, is scheduled to make an appearance at the Watford City
High School Gymnasium
on Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30
p.m.
The performance came
about with a telephone call
to Jody Renbarger, Watford
City, from David Hamilton,
director of the FargoMoorhead Opera Company.
He wanted to schedule the
performance somewhere in
western North Dakota and
needed some suggestions
on where the best place
would be. “Why not Watford
City?” exclaimed Jody. After making a few phone
calls herself she was able
to come up with people
willing to help make this
production a reality.
Other stops on the tour
include Fargo, Grand Forks
Syttende Mai Celebration
Dinner To Be Held May 17
The Sidney Sons of Norway will celebrate Syttende Mai
on Thursday, May 17 with a dinner at 6 p.m. at the M&M Café,
Sidney.
Norway adopted its constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814, and
it is this event that is celebrated on the 17th of May. Norwegian parliament held the first 17th of May celebration in 1836,
and from then on the 17th of May was regarded as national
day.
On June 7, 1905, Norway declared the union with Sweden dissolved. Oct. 26, 1905, King Oscar of Sweden recognized Norway as an independent nation and abdicated the
Norwegian throne. Syttende Mai is Norwegian for 17 May.

Sidney Health Center Volunteers Contribute
$30,000 To Purchase Ventilator
The Caring Corner Gift
Shop and Good Cents Store
recently donated $30,000 to
Sidney Health Center’s Respiratory Therapy Department.
The funds purchased a
much-needed SERVO-i Ventilator, which is a lifesaving
device for patients with respiratory failure.
Carter Hasselstrom, respiratory care manager, expressed his appreciation
saying, “I would like to take
this opportunity to thank our
volunteers for their generosity and dedication. Without
these dedicated volunteers,
the Good Cents Store and
Caring Corner would not exist. The fact that their hard
work paid for this equipment
is so impressive because it
benefits the whole community.”
A ventilator is an essen-
tial piece of equipment for
respiratory therapists in the
care of their patients. A patient in or approaching respiratory failure may be ventilated mechanically until the
disease or underlying cause
for respiratory failure has
been resolved and the
patient’s ventilatory efforts
have adequately resumed.
The SERVO-i is a universal intensive care ventilator for all patient categories,
from neonates and pediatrics
to adults. With its compact
design, advanced functionality and ease of use, it is well
suited for virtually all needs
in the Intensive Care Unit
and for patient transportation
within the hospital.
Remarkably, each year
proceeds from the Caring

Paddlefish snagging is a spring ritual for many Montana
anglers. Paddlefish, like many other native fish of Montana’s
eastern rivers, evolved to spawn when mountain snowmelt
and rainfall swell stream flows in prairie drainages.
Each year the availability of paddlefish depends on the
snow pack in the headwaters of the Missouri, Yellowstone
and Powder River drainages. The timing and volume of runoff determines the timing and quantity of the paddlefish moving up the major rivers.
Montana’s paddlefish season downstream from Fort
Peck Dam opens May 15 and runs from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily,
or as posted. There are several angling regulations to be
aware of:
Harvest
* Each angler is allowed one paddlefish per season
and their tag will be color coded to the area that the angler
plans to fish. Harvest days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. All paddlefish caught on
Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays throughout the season must be immediately released. Consult the 2007 Montana fishing regulations for details as the season and regulations vary depending on the area.
Snagging
* Paddlefish snagging is open May 15 to June 30 from 6
a.m. to 9 p.m. daily on the Missouri River downstream from
Fort Peck Dam and the Yellowstone River, including Intake
Fishing Access Site. A yellow paddlefish tag is required to
harvest a fish.
Quotas
* These waters are managed under a paddlefish harvest target in conjunction with North Dakota. Montana’s regulations are intended to prevent the annual harvest from exceeding 1,000 paddlefish. FWP may close the season within
24 hours notice on the lower Missouri and Yellowstone rives
if it appears that the harvest target may surpass 1,000 paddlefish. In addition, at the Intake FAS on the Yellowstone River,
the season may be closed immediately when 800 paddlefish have been harvested at Intake.
Fort Peck Dam To Fort Benton
* Upstream from Fort Peck Dam to Fort Benton, paddlefish snagging is open the entire year from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
daily, with a limit of one paddlefish per angler. A white paddlefish tag is required to harvest a fish here. The same mandatory catch-and-keep and catch-and-release days in effect on
the lower Missouri and Yellowstone rivers are also in effect in
this portion of the Missouri River above Fort Peck Dam.

Fort Peck Dredge Cuts
* Fort Peck Dredge cuts are open to bow and arrow use
only from July 15 to Aug. 31 and a blue paddlefish tag is
required.
A paddlefish tag is $6.50 for each resident and $15 for
each nonresident angler.
Detailed paddlefish regulations and descriptions of areas open for paddlefishing are available on the FWP web
site at http://www.fwp.mt.gov/ fwp.mt.gov under Fishing, or
see the 2007 Montana fishing regulations book available at
all FWP offices and license providers. A special paddlefish
regulation pamphlet is also available at FWP offices.
Anglers may also contact the FWP Region 7 office in
Miles City at 406-234-0900 or the FWP Region 6 office in
Glasgow 406-228-3700 for more information.
ND Baitfish Regulations,
Import Restrictions
North Dakota anglers should be aware of regulations
regarding live baitfish, and restrictions on importing baitfish
into North Dakota.
Fathead minnows, creek chubs, spottail shiners and
sticklebacks are the only legal live baitfish that can be used
in most North Dakota waters. The only exception for waters
that allow live baitfish is the Red River, where white suckers
may also be used. In addition, in 20 state waters it is illegal to
use any live baitfish.
Anglers are urged to buy bait from a licensed retail bait
vendor. Because it is sometimes hard to identify bait fish
species due to their small size, bait vendors inspect bait and
can properly identify the species.
Using game fish or parts of game fish as bait is illegal,
except for perch eyes, and trout and salmon eggs.
Anglers should also note restrictions on importing live
baitfish or other live bait into North Dakota. This includes
minnows and other live baitfish, worms, night crawlers, wax
worms, leeches and insects.
Anglers who want to import or bring live bait into the
state must obtain a valid North Dakota bait vendor’s license.
Otherwise, anglers must purchase all live bait in North Dakota. The purpose of this regulation, implemented in 2002, is
to provide better control against unintentional introduction of
aquatic nuisance species.
For more information anglers should refer to the 200608 North Dakota Fishing Guide, available at license vendors
or online at the state Game and Fish Department website,
gf.nd.gov.

Special of the Week
John Reynolds With Fort Peck Laker
John Reynolds of Sidney reports that the lake trout are in the shallows at Fort Peck this time of year. He said
they were in 15 to 25 feet on April 27. He said lake trout fishing should be good for a while longer, until water
temp reaches approximately 50 degrees. John joked, "Just use a deep diving crank and put your outfit in the
rod holder.....It's so easy a caveman could do it." He added, "We got three off of Haxby Point and then two
more over close to the Pines area."

Control Horn Flies With
R&J Ag Supply Minerals
With Altosid® IGR Feed-Thru
The feed-through difference.
Unlike many insecticides, feed-through products are a
touch-free, stress-free way to control horn flies. Feedthroughs pass through cattle into manure, where horn flies
lay their eggs. The result? Horn fly pupae are prevented
from developing into breeding, biting adult flies - and
future infestations.

28th Annual Montana Juried ExhibitWorks On Paper On Display At
MonDak Heritage Center
The 28thAnnual Southeastern Montana Juried ExhibitWorks on Paper Traveling Collection may be viewed at the
MonDak Heritage Center from May 1-28.
The Traveling Collection features 20 works representative of the 28th Annual Southwestern Juried Exhibit-Works
on Paper shown earlier this year at the Custer County Art &
Heritage Center in Miles City. Through the juried process,
this exhibit represented some of the best original professional and amateur art works form across Montana and surrounding states. Eligible entries were limited to works on
paper: either the support or the medium had to be at least
50% paper.
From nearly 100 entries, juror Gordon McConnell selected 42 works for exhibit. Gordon was senior curator and
assistant director of the Yellowstone Art Museum for 16 years
before embarking on a career as a full-time artist and independent curator. He awarded cash prizes totaling $1,000 to
his choices for first, second and third place, in addition to
several “honorable mentions.” The CCAHC staff then selected
20 works for inclusion in the year-long Traveling Collection.
The Traveling Collection will tour eastern Montana until
the end of the year, with stops in Broadus, Baker, Colstrip,
Ekalaka, Hardin, Jordan, Sidney and Terry.
Stockman Bank of Miles City and the William & Lorene
Nefsy Foundation sponsor both the Juried Exhibit and the
Traveling Collection.
The feed-through benefits.
Less Stress on Your Herd
Since Altosid IGR Feed-Thru is administered
in your herd’s mineral, cattle don’t need to be
touched to be treated, as they do with sprays, pour-ons,
dusts and ear tags.
More Effective Than Insecticides
Rubbing stations and dust bags must be frequently
serviced to ensure that the insecticide is present and that
they are working properly. Dusts and sprays remain
effective only with periodic retreatment. Since ear tags use
a single chemical family, pyrethroids, horn flies have
become resistant to this method of control.
More Convenient, Too
When your herd takes its mineral, it’s being treated with
Altosid IGR Feed-Thru. No stress-inducing applications for
your herd - and no time-consuming extra steps for you.
More Control for Less Cost
With Altosid IGR Feed-Thru, you can control horn flies for
less cost.
Available in Sweet Cake Mineral Tubs and
50-lb. Bags of 12-12 and 16-7 Minerals.

From riding around town,
it is apparent that many
homeowners are getting outside and working on their
yards. Good for you! There’s
just something about working on your home and yard
that Americans have always
enjoyed. According to
Wickepedia.com, about 70%
of people in the United
States live in their own home.
This rate is the world’s highest, and is up 10% since
1960. Despite some headaches associated with home
ownership, we usually regard working on our homes
as a labor of love.
It is obvious to me that
homeowners are often “experts” in many areas of home
and yard care. While there
are established guidelines
on many landscaping topics
(optimal lawn mowing technique, how to grow tomatoes,

common plant diseases, how
to pick shrubs that grow well
in this zone, etcetera), I think
it is also interesting to hear
what you have to say on
these topics. As a people
doctor, I always wanted to
know how you felt before I
made a diagnosis or prescribed a treatment. In the
same way, I want to know if
you have any landscaping
pearls of wisdom: on growing peas and other topics.
I have heard some sage
advice in my life. . . My dad
told me one man’s weed is
another’s flower. If you regard
your Hosta as a nuisance, for
example, maybe someone
else can use them as ground
cover in their troublesome
shady areas. Joe Halvorsen
says spacing in your garden
is just as important as timing.
An English teacher taught me
that no matter how hard you
try, you’re never gonna get rid
of all your weeds – and he
wasn’t just talking about gardening.
Future columns will research landscaping topics. I’d
also like to hear your ideas.
Please drop off your ideas at
the Roundup office, email
me
at
kesslerj@
midrivers.com, or share a
cup of coffee with me at one
of the local pit stops. Together
maybe we can come up with
some useful and/or entertaining material for this column.
