Close Reading Re-examined in Secondary ELAR Classrooms (Grades 7-12) – 010934 This session will explore key ideas and lesson topics from leading experts on close reading strategies. Secondary English Language Arts and Reading teachers will learn about the process and purpose of close reading and analyze text complexity. The ultimate goal of teaching students about close reading strategies is to allow them to develop a meaningful relationship with various texts so that they will grow their future-ready skills in academic readiness and communication. A Journey to Writing Success: Guiding Student Writers from Ideas to Essays for Grades 7-12 – 012273 This learning experience will provide participants with strategies to guide students from the brainstorming process to a complete essay through development of ideas and purposeful revision. Participants will learn how to guide students through the entire writing process to become accomplished secondary writers. 7 Reading with a Purpose - Online – 011258 In order to reach our diverse student population, educators need multiple tools. Setting a purpose for reading supports comprehension and increases motivation. Teachers often report that poor reading skills hinder many students' ability to learn and therefore prevent their success. Using the clear instructional technique of setting a purpose for reading is a scaffold for your students, especially those who are struggling. This online course is designed for all grade levels and content areas. What you learn will enable you to help more students become independent, successful readers. This course is free for districts/charters that purchased the Instructional Services contract and offers three hours of continuing professional education. Use Shorter Texts to Dive Deeper in Secondary ELAR Classrooms (Grades 7-12) – 012072 Too often, secondary English language arts teachers get caught up in the cycle of reading novels and long pieces of fiction while at the same time needing to reinforce higher-order thinking, vocabulary, writing, and grammar skills. This session will highlight a variety of short texts across multiples genres with the goal of saving time while going deeper. Pieces of literary nonfiction and shorter texts can pack the same punch as novels and long short stories, and they can spur students to be thoughtful readers. Cut your prep time in half by teaching shorter texts and engaging your students with multiple genres! Beyond the DBQ – 010960 Reading, writing, and critical thinking are imperative skills in the Social Studies classroom. Successful implementation of DBQs in the classroom is dependent on the capacity of the teacher. Once participants have gone through a completed essay, questions and concerns arise. Reviewing the process, calibrating essay scoring, and focusing on point of view and inference will enhance teaching the DBQ. Extended Learning is expected. Sheltered Instruction: Supporting English Language Learners in the Content-Area Classrooms In this workshop, participants will gain a basic understanding of how to design instruction that focuses on providing accessibility for English language learners (ELLs) to grade-level content curriculum and concepts while they continue to improve their academic language proficiency. Participants will learn to use second-language acquisition strategies as they teach content-area knowledge and skills and differentiate instruction for ELLs.
