However, you should watch out for this brainy diva, as she’s known to be quite touchy on occasion. Axi Dente is the ultra-creative professional victim. At times, this clumsy diva can be a very meticulous and impatient woman. She earns her way in this world by mysteriously causing accidents and winning lawsuits. The town of Snow Falls is growing tired of this mishap queen of misfortune. Elizabeth Winter is the blatantly honest food inspector. Isabella Rudolph Roxy Rich played by: played by: Each player will have one in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 5 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HOST Get ready for an awesome holiday-spirited time with your purchase of this murder mystery game from mymysteryparty.com! This party is an entertaining and comical mystery where the players act the roles of hilarious personalities while sleuthing the intriguing story line. This is an excellent choice for your next holiday season get together! The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and slip them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round. Envelopes are always optional as you can simply fold the clues or put them into a ‘scroll’ and tie ribbon around them - just make sure to label them with the character name and round! Full Instructions are included in the purchased game The game is organized into three rounds: PRE-GAME STARTER: these pre-game starters are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game starters are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These starters are not vital to solving the mystery. In this game, the starters are pre-game tasks for the characters to perform. These pre-game tasks are optional and the omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. You will need to fill in your guests’ contact information (email is typically the best method of contact) on the pre-game task sheets for each guest to be able to contact the characters listed on each of their task sheets (see below). You can also use the Your Mystery Party site as a pre-game warm-up as well. Appetizer HOUR: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. DINNER HOUR: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner to your guests. DESSERT & THE BIG REVEAL: Deliver these clues with coffee and dessert. For further questions, check out our FAQ web page at www.mymysteryparty.com/frasqu.html If your question is not listed in our FAQ, contact us at the email addresses below. [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 6 For more information on how to host, here are some helpful videos and articles for you to view (click on the following links): • • • • How to Host a Murder Mystery Party Instructional Video How to Plan a Murder Mystery Party Instructional Video How to Host in Ten Easy Steps Article How to Host a Phenomenal Event Article *IMPORANT INFORMATION REGARDING CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS: Assign your most definite RSVPs and outgoing guests to the required characters and the more tentative, shy/reserved guests for the optional characters. To figure out who will be a ‘definite RSVP’, it is highly suggested to send a ‘save the date’ email out to your prospective guests way in advance of the party date so you can either eliminate those guests from your list who can’t make it (and therefore you will not assign them to a character) or you can change your party date if enough required-character guests simply cannot make it. It’s suggested to invite more than the required number of players as any of the ‘required’ guests could cancel at the last minute and leave you high & dry. You can play as many optional players as you wish and in any combination that you choose. The optional players have the same materials and same participation level, but these optional characters are not ‘mandatory’ for the storyline to play out and therefore for the mystery to be sleuthed appropriately. What happens if one of your required characters cancels on you at the last minute? First, take a deep breath…it’s not the end of the world. Full Instructions are included in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 7 HELPFUL HINTS ON HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY PARTY GUEST INSTRUCTIONS You’ve been assigned a character and you’ve come to the party dressed in the most awesome holiday attire and have been told to play your role. Now what? The mystery is divided into three main rounds of party play. During the party, you will receive an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues for the characters at the party provide everything that you need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to everyone’s clues to get the whole picture of what has happened. Full Instructions are included in the purchased game From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing a ‘hypocritical police officer,’ then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. Some characters are designed to be played more reserved than other characters. Feel free to play your role in any manner that you feel comfortable. Embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other guests to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information. Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 8 HOST DIRECTIVES Get ready for a fun time at Snowflake Lodge in Snow Falls with your purchase of the Murder at the Ugly Holiday Sweater Party game from mymysteryparty.com! This party is an exciting murder mystery where the players act the roles of intriguing personalities while sleuthing the captivating story line. You can never go wrong with a MY MYSTERY PARTY game for any occasion! The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues, slip them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round and you can purchase the exact amount needed for your game on the www.MyMysteryparty.com site in the Mystery Prop Emporium section. For economy’s sake, an alternative is to scroll the clues and fasten with a ribbon. Be sure to label the outside of each scroll with the character/round. In these instructions, however, we will assume you are using the envelope method for each character, each round. The free, downloadable invitations are located on the item page where you first purchased this game. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link that says ‘free, downloadable invitation’ to download the pdf file. Fill in your information in the text fields and either print or save to your hard drive. You can email these invites to your guests to save paper costs. You will need to enter your information in the text field and save one on your hard drive for each player, changing the character to be played on each invitation. Full Instructions are included in the purchased game This mystery comes with 20 characters. There are 8 required characters (#1 through #8) and 12 optional characters in this mystery (#9 - #20). If you do not have guests for these 12 characters, simply omit the clue cards of these guests. If you need to have unique characters added beyond the available expansion pack, please purchase custom characters from the My Mystery Party site under the Game Extras, Custom Characters section. Please allow us a maximum of up to 7 business days to complete your request (however, during the busy times of the year, this might be extended depending upon demand). Depending on the author cue, we might be able to do them quicker for you but if you are in a hurry - please check with us first before you purchase. Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 9 If you do not want to know the solution, do not view the final round of clues or the final answer key at the end of this document. For a complete surprise, you can elect the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the mymysteryparty.com site and we will send you the clues in sealed envelopes and the rest of prepared game documents –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge since we utilize our paper, ink, envelopes, labor, etc.). We also offer mystery props on the My Mystery Party site in the Prop Emporium including a thunderstorm ambiance 10 minute sound wav to play in the background, authentic crime scene barrier tape, crime scene balloons, mystery investigation pens, white face makeup for the victim, victim t-shirts, and even instrumental rap beats as a downloadable mp3 for the optional but highly suggested bonus game rap contest. If you follow us on Twitter @mymysteryparty &/or like our Facebook page @mymysteryparty – we often post coupon codes for props and also give hosting tips and host challenges. The game is organized into four rounds and is structured as follows: OPTIONAL PRE-GAME TASKS: these optional pre-game task sheets are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive (not optimal). All pre-game materials are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These tasks are not vital to solving the mystery and omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. APPETIZER (COCKTAILS 4 ADULTS) HOUR / ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. DINNER HOUR / ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner (optional) to your guests. DESSERT, AND THE BIG REVEAL/ SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with coffee/hot cocoa and dessert. Note: you do NOT have to serve dinner, this is only suggested and the instructions tell you ‘when’ to serve it and what to do around the time you serve it. You also do not have to serve dessert – again, it is only a suggestion. You can simply skip both without a problem and just serve snacks/appetizers the entire time. For further questions, check out our FAQ web page at www.mymysteryparty.com/frasqu.html If your question is not listed in our FAQ, contact us at the email addresses below. Mystery Questions: [email protected] Web based Questions: [email protected] OPTIONAL PRE-GAME STARTER Before the party, encourage your guests to view the Your Mystery Party YourMysteryParty.com/uglysweater website &/ or use the free printable My Mystery Party invitations as they have the character descriptions included. There is also a fun game trailer on YouTube & Your Mystery Party that you can allow your guests to view prior to the party and you can start your party as well by playing the trailer. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party as well as the history of the town and more! There are also hidden/subtle hints about characters throughout the page so those guests who choose to be ‘super sleuths’ can spend some time studying the YOUR MYSTERY PARTY site prior to the party. Full Instructions are included in Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 10 the purchased game ROUND ONE - MEET & MINGLE APPETIZER HOUR Round one – appetizer / cocktail (for adults) hour begins as the guests arrive. DÉCOR: The party area is supposed to be in a popular hot spot called Snowflake Lodge in Snow Falls. Check out our Pinterest page for some fun ideas and DIY options for décor and costumes. The link to this page is also located on the game page site and the Your Mystery Party site. Optional: make a sign (i.e. Snowflake Lodge) to put in front of your home out of cardboard and PVC pipe for a fun effect. Optional: make a DVD of pictures of your guests to play like a slideshow during your party on the television / projector screen (if there is one in the room). Because the game setting is in a general party area of a tavern/lodge/restaurant, any party area is suitable. Simply decorate the room as if you are having a typical holiday party with festive holiday décor such as pine trees, garland, and candles with holly surrounding the base, red & green or white & silver balloons, etc. Since this is a holiday-themed game, the more holiday décor, the better! GUEST ARRIVAL: Appetizers can be served (optional-cocktails for legal-aged adults). The guests’ instructions and the character descriptions should be available for the guests to review. You can formally go over the instructions to the guests once everyone arrives. As an alternative, creatively display the cluecontaining envelopes on a table for the guests to locate their own character names but don’t allow them to take clue cards from future rounds! Don’t forget to take both individual pictures of your guests and a group picture once everyone arrives - they’ll all want copies of these! A great party souvenir is to print these pictures during the party on photo paper and slip into creatively designed frames (you can make them out of cardboard or purchase actual frames). Full Instructions are included in Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 11 the purchased game ROUND TWO – DAUNTING DINNER HOUR PRE-GAME SET UP: In the nearest bathroom, place the following items under the sink - the victim sign, scotch tape, host supplied white non-toxic face makeup (optional but funny and suggested), and also include the victim t-shirt and / or crime scene tape if you have purchased these items (again, optional but funny and suggested). If there is not a cabinet under the sink, place these items in any location that can be concealed within that bathroom. The victim will be instructed in their clue card for round two to look for it if there is not a cabinet under the sink. The victim will be instructed in their round two clue card – to become the victim after the pre-murder clues have been implemented (after ~ 15 minutes) to go to the nearest restroom to become the victim by applying the white face makeup on their face (optional), using Scotch tape to adhere the victim sign to their chest and if the optional victim t-shirt is available - to put that on (with the victim sign on top) and if the optional authentic crime scene barrier tape is there - to decorate themselves with it. It is hilarious when the guests see the fully decorated victim! Full Instructions are included in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 12 CONCLUSION OF THE ROUND: At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period (i.e. 5-10 minutes) in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the Murder Mystery Investigation Sheet. Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round. You collect the investigation sheets so the guests are not tempted to change their original guesses of whodunit once they hear what others have to say during the accusation round. If you trust your guests won’t change their answers &/or there is no pride or end of the game prizes on the line – there’s no need to collect the murder mystery investigation sheets from your guests. PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready! • Clue cards for Round Two in sealed and labeled envelopes • The forensic analysis report in a sealed envelope for the Round Two Murder • The victim sign for the victim’s clue in Round Two • The Mystery Investigation Sheets • Scotch Tape (to adhere the victim sign and the murder weapon to the victim, host supplied). • Non-toxic white face makeup for the victim (the victim’s clue will describe what to do with it; optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium). • Victim t-shirt (optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium) and crime scene tape to decorate the victim (optional, host supplied and available at the My Mystery Party Prop Emporium) • Any of the optional bonus game activity materials (see bonus game instructions). SURPRISING SOLUTION ROUND– DESSERT & ‘THE BIG REVEAL’ ACCUSATIONS: After you collect the mystery investigation sheets, allow the guests to one-by-one accuse who they believe the MURDERER is and how they did it. Instruct them to also tell the group their guess of the MURDERER‘S motive. If you are having an awards ceremony using the awards certificates available on the Full Instructions are included in the purchased game Copyright © mymysteryparty.com Page 13 PRE GAME character G – pregame tasks Contact Tendo Clause (__________________) and say the following: You’ve always been a great friend. I was offered a deal that I cannot refuse and I want to talk to you more about this at the Ugly Sweater Party at the Snowflake Lodge. Contact Greg Jingles (__________________) and say the following: Stop over exaggerating your stories! I’m sick and tired of knowing the true story and then seeing you tell it in an overly dramatic and exaggerated manner. I’m not going to be your friend anymore if you don’t stop this behavior. Respond to Axi Dente and say the following: If you dare sue me for a frivolous reason, I will murder you. And probably torture you first – and I know where it hurts the worst on the human body! You are banned from my spa, by the way. Each player will have one in the purchased game If anybody else contacts you, respond that you’ll speak to them about it at the party. Character J and her family have a logging company that is acting irresponsibly by tearing down the Snow Falls forest at a remarkable rate. The animals are becoming homeless and their family could care less, as long as they harvest their lumber. See what others think. You own a petting zoo and have some very unique and cool animals. You service the schools here in Snow Falls when they have field trips and you also bring certain animals on location for parties, exhibits, etc. You have a penguin exhibit, reindeer pasture, camel, turtle dove aviary and even a baby polar bear. You absolutely love animals. clues that you may conceal if you wish Character J’s family must be stopped. You would do anything to prevent that logging company from tearing down more of the forests. Maybe you should start a petition? You are now a member of Humans Supporting the Ethical Treatment of Animals (HSETA), but the organization is known for acting pretty radical when they get a new focus. You are not sure if you want to go that far – especially given how powerful Roxy Rich’s family is. She told you that Character B told her and a few other people that you faked your way to becoming an astronaut and that you only have an average IQ. You are so humiliated and are afraid that this will somehow grow into a rumor big enough for somebody to call NASA and squeal on you. They could make you retest your IQ and your exams that they administer prior to you being hired – with a proctor that you do not know! You’d be fired for sure! Your friends that proctor the exams at the NASA testing center and helped you cheat will be fired too! She has seriously betrayed your trust. Tell a few people that you know someone is getting blackmailed here at this party, but you don’t know who it is. See if anybody else knows. POST -MURDER CLUEs: The murderer must be the one with the biggest motive. You don’t remember seeing the murder weapon tonight. You would be shocked if your fingerprints are found on it. You never left the party room (the main seating area) the entire party. The one that discovered the victim may use the discovery as a cover-up for any evidence that is later found on /by the victim. Pass out these envelopes to start the round. The guests will read their solutions in the order given on the solution cards. Each guest is to read their solution and then call out who reads their solution next (this information is at the bottom of each player’s card). If your players get lost in the order of reading the solutions (because they are not paying attention to the information on their cards), there is a list included with the answer key (final pages of the document) of the order that the solutions are read. However, this will tell you who the murderer is, so we do not advise you to view this in advance of the party. Another safety net is to simply make an announcement that whoever has the solution card that says they are the murderer, they are to read their solution dead last. The other players can read in essentially any order – just make sure the murderer reads last. character X – round three READ WHEN YOU ARE TOLD IT IS YOUR TURN When it is your turn, read the following solution to the group: I will totally sue anybody who thinks or has made even a comment that I had anything to do with this murder. I’m serious. I am also prepared to sue the murderer because you have stressed me out emotionally and even physically with this investigation. Of course I didn’t kill Character G, s/he was somebody that I was about to sue. You cannot sue the dead, folks! But I forwarded Character G a chain letter via email two weeks ago and I know s/he didn’t forward it. See! If you ignore those things, bad things will come to you!
