The mosaic floors of these noblemen’s villas dating from the 3rd to the 5th century AD are considered among the finest
in the Eastern Mediterranean. The colourful and intricate Roman mosaics to be found in Paphos are a must for all visitors
to Cyprus. They were discovered by accident in the 1960’s - further excavation revealed a number of Roman houses all
with spectacular mosaics, depicting scenes from ancient Greek mythology. The mosaics give a clue to the wealthy and
opulent lives of some of the Roman Paphiots. The main sites are the House of Dionysos, the House of Aion and the House of
Theseus.

Founded at the end of the 12th century by the Cypriot hermit and writer Neofytos. The ‘Egkleistra’, an enclosure carved
out of the mountain by the hermit, contains some of the finest Byzantine frescoes dating from the 12th to 15th century.
The medieval fort set in the Pafos harbour, hosts intruiging chambers which take the visitor back in time.

Pafos Harbour area was originally a Byzantine fort built to protect the harbour, it was rebuilt by the Lusignans in the 13th
century, dismantled by the Venetians in 1570 and rebuilt by the Ottomans after they captured the island in the 16th century.

Spread over a vast area, a little over 2 kilometeres, this impressive necropolis dates back to the 4th century BC. They
are carved out of solid rock with some being decorated with Doric pillars. High officials rather than Kings were buried
here, but the magnificence of the tombs gave the locality its name. Archaeological excavations are still being carried out.
Ancient burial habits as in Egypt included burying personal belongings with the dead, such items include amphorae and
through their markings it is possible to date these artefacts. Although the tombs have been casually explored for centuries
and subjected to systematic excavation in the latter 1970’s, the University of Sydney is in the process of publicising its finds.

Kourion is one of the most glorious ancient kingdoms of Cyprus. It controlled ‘Kouris’, the fertile valley river of the same name.

fees: €1,70. Episkopi, 19 km (11,5 miles) west of Lemesos. One of the most spectacular archaeological sites on the island where excavations still bring new treasures to light. The
magnificent Graeco-Roman Theatre was originally built in the 2nd century BC and is now fully restored and used for
musical and theatrical performances.
The castle of Kolossi’s four walls are 1.25 meters thick and have withstood mighty earthquakes throughout the centuries.
The House of Eustolios, originally a private Roman villa, became a public recreation centre during the Early Christian
period. It consists of a complex of baths and a number of rooms with beautiful 5th century AD mosaic floors. The Early
Christian basilica dated to the 5th century, was probably the Cathedral of Kourion with a baptistery attached to the north

face. The House of Achilles and the House of the Gladiators have beautiful mosaic floors. The Nymphaeum, dedicated to the
water nymphs, is an elegant Roman structure.

The Mosque of Umm Haram is the chief Muslim shrine on the island and of great importance for the entire Muslim world.

Built in 1816 over the tomb of Umm Haram, allegedly a relative of Prophet Mohhamed who died on this spot in 649
during the first Arab raids. The mosque is an important place of Moslem pilgrimage ranking immediately after the shrines
of Mecca, Medina and Al Aqsha in Jerusalem.
To the west of the town of Larnaca lies the Salt Lake, the haunt of migrant flamingoes from December to March. The Salt
Legend tells that the cross of the good thief, crucified alonside Jesus Christ, was brought to Stavrovouni after St. Helena was shipwrecked.
Lake (1.2sq.mi/2.2sq.km), just off the airport road, is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the area. In the winter it fills
with water and attracts large numbers of migrating birds, including flamingoes, which form a blaze of pink as they gather in
the center of the lake. In the summer the water evaporates, leaving a crust of salt and a haze of gray dust.

In Cyprus, snow-skiing can be enjoyed on the slopes of Mount Olympos (1951 metres a.s.l.), from the beginning of January
to the end of March. Mount Olympos is only 3 km, from Troodos hill resort, 12 km from Platres hill resort, and about an
hour’s drive from the seaside town of Lemesos and the capital Lefkosia.
The Cyprus Ski Club possesses four ski-lifts. Two of the lifts are installed on the North Face of Mount Olympos, one is 350
metres long and the other is 500 metres long. The other two ski-lifts each 150 metres long, are installed at “Sun Valley” south
of Olympos.

A comprehensive range of sea-sports facilities can be found in Cyprus; a) Geroskipou Public Beach, at Geroskipou, 3 km

is 27kms from Paphos and only 10km from Polis.
This is a very typical Cypriot village with many old stone houses bearing traditional architecture of carved
doors and windows of wood. The narrow, winding streets add to the character of the village along with the
renovated village houses.There are two coffee shops that cater to the needs of the village, as well as two small
supermarkets/kiosks. There are some very good tavernas in Droushia and two supermarkets. Once you’ve had
a meze for lunch, why not visit the tiny weaving museum near the centre of the village?
Explore the ancient monastery of Agios Georgios Nikoxilitis on the eastern side of Droushia. This monastery
is thought to have been built in the 15th century and was rebuilt in 1923 after it was destroyed by fire. From
Droushia the views are stunning – you can see all the way across to the Troodos mountains and, looking north
you can see Chrysochou Bay and the seaside towns of Latchi and Polis. Looking west, there are stunning views
of the Akamas Peninsula with many huge landforms scattered in between. If it’s a typical traditional Cypriot
