I would also like to thank all committee chairs and members for everything that everyone has done to make this club as active and fun as it is. It takes a lot of volunteers to put on all of the runs, events, clean ups, community service, newsletter, membership, merchandise, advertising, yard sale, safety, sunshine, website, and not to mention keeping our public lands in public hands. I would ask that all club members volunteer and help the club in any way you can. Only with your support can we continue to be the strong club that we are. Please don‟t wait for the “other guy”-the other guy just might be you! Our yard sale in February was a huge success with a profit of $2690! Part of these proceeds will go out to the community to help those less fortunate. Thanks go out to Paul and Joyce Stephens for offering their home for the sale and for all of the hard work that goes into running a yard sale. Thanks also to all of the volunteers who helped set up, work the sale, and finally pack up the remnants to go to St. Vincent De Paul and Hospice. In the meantime we have lots of 4-wheeling left to do this spring. There are many runs coming up as well as junk car removal, mine fencing, ranch cleanup and so much fun it might not be legal. Happy Trails, Cheryl Cat Tail Cove E January 26, 2010 ight jeeps, twelve members along with one guest made the trek to Cat Tail Cove for a day in the desert. From the Wall of Death to Geri‟s Jump to the obstacles on the way to our lunch area close to the Bill Williams River, no one shied away from trying everything the run had to offer. On our way back to the air-up point, Bill Trunk and Mike Yahrmarkt took the route through the Bowling Alley while the rest of us watched from above. All-in-all this was a great run and everyone enjoyed the day. Much thanks goes to several people, Bill Trunk and Dennis Callaghan for spotting, Rodger and Renee Melton for taking care of the AED, Mike Yahrmarkt for tail gunning and to my navigator, Dennis Callaghan for keeping me on the correct path. Charles Leipart, Trail Boss Photo By: John Strong McGuffies Cabin N ine jeeps left terrible at 95/I-40 Friday, January 27, at 8:00 a.m. with 14 members and 6 guests. We arrived at McGuffies Cabin, parked, did a short hike in Mississippi Wash and had lunch. In Mississippi Wash a watering station for sheep and pictographs were viewed. After our hike and lunch we did a return side trip through Alamo Slot Canyon. We arrived at our air up spot by 3:30 and thank you Steve Riley for being our tail gunner. John Strong, Trail Boss “Trail Talk” Photo By: Rodger Melton While tuning our CB the other day we picked up these immortal words: “White Rook this is Check Mate King Two over.” Wow, must be some powerful radio wave skip from days of old that have bounced of Pluto and have just returned to earth. Even though Marconi is not a member of the club there are a few members that know the + wire from the – wire. Some of the most common faults with our CB‟s are loose antenna cable connections (at the radio or antenna), loose antenna to mount connection, and an un-tuned radio antenna. Ever heard someone transmit and it sounds like they have a piece of wax paper over the mic or you can barely hear them? Or their transmission is scratchy or breaks up? In the first case it probably needs tuning and the second a faulty connection somewhere. The radio should be checked at least twice a season. All that bumping and jiggling does cause failures. And have a buddy come over, swap jeeps and call you while you listen on his. We have a couple of real helpful radio gee wiz kind of members we can connect you up with so give us a shout or send off a carrier pigeon. “Roger will co, over and out!” May 6th - 12th, 2012 RV Park: Spanish Trails 1-800-787-2751 Hotel: Moab Rustic Inn 1-435-259-6177 Contact: Mike & Cheryl MacLean Trail Talk Safety Rant of the Month – – CB Radio (or as My Mother-in-law calls it - her Trailer Park Cellular Phone) -2- March 2012 Plane Wreck-Havasu Falls S ix jeeps left the end of Bison Monday, January 30, 2012 with 9 members and 2 guests. We arrived near the first engine above Havasu Falls and after a short hike took pictures. For another day one could hike to the top of the ridge and see the metal imbedded into the mountain with sun reflections. Our next stop was near the gate where we parked and after a short hike we found a old yellow jeep body. Further on our hike we found the second engine where we took pictures. After lunch by our parked jeeps we ended our run at Paso de Oro. Thank you Brent Keller for being the tail gunner. Mar 22nd 8:00am, Bad Miguel’s, Bruce Speirs Rovey’s Needle H4W Membership Meeting ............................................. Mar 22nd 7:00pm, Realtor’s Center, Cheryl MacLean hat a great day for a jeep run. On Wednesday, February 8, ten jeepers in five jeeps took to the trail for a short trip to Rovey‟s Needle. We all cleared the first two obstacles, the Wall of Death and Geri‟s Jump with no (well maybe one) real problems. The road to the Needle was uneventful, but when arriving at our destination found two jeeps from Bullhead City already there. Thankfully they had parked where we had plenty of room to negotiate the turn at the base of the Needle and park safely. Most of our group climbed to the “eye” and crawled through and very gingerly made the way down to our jeeps. From there we found a spot in a sheltered area to have our snack as we were on our way back to the air up point. On the way back we had time for a “jeep inspection” (as Willie would say) and found all were in pristine condition. We hit the air-up point at 1:00 and were back in Havasu by 1:30. Thank you to all who braved the trip and to Dennis Callaghan for navigating (although there is only one road in and one road out) and for spotting . Bill Mitschele and his daughter, Becky, performed an outstanding job as tailgunner. Trail Boss Meeting ............................................................ Mar 30th 10:00am, Mohave County Library, Bob Scholl W Charles Leipart, Trail Boss Trail Talk -3- Rovery‟s Needle Photo By: Tom Poellinger March 2012 T Swansea Loop en jeeps left the Scenic Turnout February 6, 2012 at 8:30 with 18 members and one guest. We arrived near the Bill Williams River and had lunch in a old settlement. With a successful river crossing we did a extra loop to see the Pipe Line River Crossing. Along the way we had many panoramic views of the Swansea Wilderness Area, Rawhide Mountains, Aubrey Wilderness Area, and Sharks Tooth. At our last stop before Highway 95 we noticed we lost our tail gunner. Mike Yahrmarkt led the majority of jeeps out to air up at 3:30. We met our tail gunner at the air up spot at 4:30. Lessons learned are better communication by trail boss, keep the vehicle behind you in view, there are two exits to $5 Dollar wash and everybody had fun. Trail Boss of the Month Andy Lucas Rookie Trail Boss of the Month Ron Satterfield Congratulations! John Strong, Trail Boss New York Mountains S Photo By: John Strong O Moss Wash n February 1st, four vehicles met at Love‟s to start the long trip to I-40, exit 66 where we stopped and topped off our gas tanks and aired down. We then traveled down Blake Ranch road to the Moss Wash turn off. We stopped at the Gold King Mansion and looked around. After leaving the mansion, we took a side trip to Cedar Springs and up to the Flag Mine Road. We then turned down the Escalator and came our through the Walnut Creek Survivalist Camp to the Griffith Exit on I-40. Tuesday, February 7, 2012 ix Jeeps with eleven intrepid souls decided to venture to a faraway destination where no man has gone before, well at least no man from the Havasu 4 Wheelers, (I think). We left Terrible‟s at I-40 and drove to Goffs and then 25 miles further north to the New York Mountains in the East Mojave Desert. The goal was to visit Caruther‟s Canyon. The drive was uneventful on good roads and the reward was a fabulous canyon full of gigantic boulders, some with smaller boulders perched precariously on one another. After a chilly lunch, cloudy and 43 degrees at 6000 feet, we headed home via New York Mountain Road to Black Canyon Road, Essex Road and then I-40. On the way home we briefly visited Hole-In-The-Wall Campground where there are some amazing rock formations, worth going back to see. It was a long day but the Jeepers were unanimous in agreeing that it was worth the trip. Total mileage from my house and back was 234 miles. A brand new member, Tom Poellinger, was pleased to discover what his stock YJ Wrangler could accomplish. Thanks to Ladell for tailgunning. Andy Lucas, Trail Boss Thanks to Jim Bowan for tail gunning. Ladell Olson, Trail Boss I Automatic External Defibrillator f you want to carry one of the club‟s Automatic External Defibrillators (AED‟s) on a run, please contact Bob Drew and make arrangements to check one out before your run. Thanks, Bob Scholl, Run Chairman Trail Talk -4- “Sunshine” If you know of anyone in the club who might need some cheering up, please call Lisa Bunnell at 855-1780. She will be happy to send cards for any occasion on behalf of the entire Havasu 4 Wheelers membership. March 2012 Tomcat Pass S Wednesday, February 08, 2012 even Jeeps met at Paso de Oro, aired down and hoped nothing would break on the way up. The trip up this challenging trail was tougher than usual today but all made it without incident. We were rewarded by a spectacular view of Havasu, the lake and the Mojave Desert on a sunny 70 degree day, much different from the gale force winds that we endured on our last trip. Thanks to all those who helped the trail boss get out of trouble by carefully and strategically placing rocks and a special thanks to Dick Thomas for a great tailgating job. He even kept track of Ladell, a task which some believe is no cinch. Andy Lucas, Trail Boss F Whipple Wash ebruary 9th was one of those wonderful winter days we have in Havasu, so 10 jeeps decided to take advantage of it and stir up a littler dust in the desert. They still haven‟t started the road construction near the Bill Williams River so we buzzed right through to our air down area. We made our way down Whipple Wash to the cave and that is where Frank Travis decided to entertain the group by successfully driving in and out of the cave. Great Job! Like someone said when you look at the cave from the road it doesn‟t look too bad, but when you get up close OH MY GOSH! We traveled through the beautiful canyon with the sheer cliffs and then decided to have lunch. The run was almost over but everyone agreed that it was too early and the weather was too beautiful to head home, so we did B&D Roulette Mine run. On the run we came upon a burro that just stood there and watched us hoping that we had brought him some carrots. Sorry…..Connie Wilke ate all of hers at lunch time. Since we didn‟t have a good track of this run Mike Y. kept us pointed in the right direction and did a great job of it because we all made it out together. Brent Keller was the tail gunner and did an excellent job.....you are hired. Willie Williams, Trail Boss Tomcat Pass Photo By: Andy Lucas Anna Hofstetter is recovering from shoulder surgery. Robert and Mary Drayton are recovering from an auto accident which happened earlier in the month. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and hope to see you on the trails soon. Photos By: Willie Williams Trail Talk -5- March 2012 Driving 101 & 102 Class F riday Feb. 10th 2012 we were to meet at Sara Park, and while we were waiting, jeeps were arriving, and arriving, and arriving, to a grand total of 25. You could have knocked me over with a feather; it looked like the parking lot of the convention center in Las Vegas. 101 Class: Consisted primarily of basic 4 wheeling techniques, such as the use of 2 wheel vs. 4 wheel drive use, braking in both modes, traversing both up hill and downhill, loose terrains, an explanation of center of gravity as it pertains to jeeps, the use of tow straps and where to store it and the wench controller. And a question and answer session. 102 class: An explanation and discussion on tire placement, the location of both front and rear differentials while traversing obstacles, picking lines through and around and over obstacles, approach angles, and ground clearances in general. After lunch, we all practiced the above in the Bowling Alley, and everyone did a fantastic job, I was amazed. And yes, a couple of vehicles got hung up, and of course this also was a learning lesson. But all in all, I think it was a worthwhile day spent with some very fine members of our club, and I hope they had as much fun as we did. After class was over, and it was only 2:30pm, we had some folks that still wanted to play, so there were 8 jeeps that continued down Cat Tail and we played on the rest of the obstacles. And low and behold, they went over everything, what a great ending for the day. Special thank you to Steve Perry, John Strong, Bill Trunk & Mike Beets for their assistance, and it was dearly needed with this size of a group. Snake & Willie Williams, Trail Boss Photo By: Bruce Speirs Piute – Old Woman – Stepladder – Turtle Mtns. E February 12, 2012 ight jeeps with 13 members and one guest departed Terrible‟s at 8 AM as we had a long way to go. We exited I-40 at Mountain Springs and went south west on old Route 66. Turned south and entered a corridor trail through the Piute Mtns Wilderness. Solitude and four burros greeted us. We played on some interesting rocks and then continued, passing the Little Piutes, arriving at the Cooper King Mine in the Old Woman Mtns. We feasted on good food, incredible vistas, old mining relics, and scooped up delicious quartz and mineral samples for dessert. As we were leaving Steve Perry called out “ Houston, we may have a problem.” Seems the bolts on a front shock „went south‟ so we immediately huddled and slapped on a quick H4W fix. That lasted about 500 feet, so Steve jumped out and proclaimed “We don‟t need no stink‟n shock absorber” and off it came. As we bumped along south – a few jeeps strangely much heavier than before - we got a good view of the old gal herself - the rock formation and name sake of the Old Woman Mtns. She watched us disappear east across the Ward Valley . We then entered another corridor road that splits the Stepladder and Turtle Mtns. We finally arrived at Brown‟s Mining Camp and soaked up the history, poked through old relics, scoped out vistas and snapped photos. With our fun meters full we headed out for home, arriving same at 6 PM. A long drive and a long day to the middle of nowhere you say? That‟s the price of admission to see old mining stuff, cool rocks, and unending vistas few trouble to visit. I value it a 4X4 run that‟s worth all the “gold in them „thar hills!” A “thanks‟ to Steve and Kathy Perry for tail gunning. Remember, its your job to notify us! Bob or Wanda 928/505-6579 [email protected] S ix jeeps left the Scenic Turnout, February 13th, with 13 people at 8:40am for a 108.8 mile journey. The Rawhide Mountain Range area holds several mines such as Rawhide, Cleopatra, New England, Cactus Queen, Deer Trail, Bonanza, Little Kimble, Big Kimble, McGuffie, Shanno, Lake, Maggie and Loves. The Rawhide trail between the Pipeline and McGuffie Road have a ton of trails. We had lunch at McGuffies Cabin (48.8 mi.) then viewed the watercatchment and Pictographs. We exited Alamo Road via Slot Canyon and aired up at Boriana Mine intersection area at 4:08. Thank you Mike Yahrmarkt for being our Tail Gunner. John Strong, Trail Boss Photo By: John Strong Desert Bar to Roadrunner C February 14, 2012 upid laid out a Valentine‟s Day 4X4 run & luncheon treat for 18 members and one guest. Our 10 jeeps took the back way route to the Desert Bar. The first water fall was climbed by all with no difficultly and in spite of the sun blazing directly into our eyes we also noticed the first sign of spring as a few flowers were showing. We stopped at the Grey Eagle Mine to inspect the mine workings left by those hardy souls from the days of old. Back in the jeeps and off we went. We bumped and climbed and the more we bumped the hungrier we got. We passed the closed Desert Bar and continued down the canyon. Finally we made it to the air up spot at SR 95. As we were driving to the Roadrunner Cafe on the Colorado River it got cooler and rain threatened. We arrived to find our reserved tables on the floating dock and proceeded to order up the vittles. The winning pick of the day was their open face prime rib steak sandwich special – yummy! Trish Reister played Cupid‟s helper and made sure everyone got lip smacking good candy kisses. A “thank you” to Ladell and Judy Olson for Tail Gunning. Kathlyne Speirs, Trail Boss The Cow Bell The coveted ding-dong Goes to: “follow the dust” I love this Bell! Ladell Olson Photo By: Kathlyne Speirs Trail Talk -7- March 2012 Planet Mine E February 15, 2012 ven though it was breezy and cloudy there were thirteen jeeps that decided to ignore the weather and make this run. After airing down our first stop was in the short, but very scenic slot canyon. A little farther down the wash everyone had a chance to play on the little hill which is a good test for what lies ahead. As we headed down Mineral Wash, to our lunch spot, everyone got a chance to see how much dirt had been moved around at the Mineral Hill Mine. After our tummy‟s were full we headed to the no name mine, and as usual the bats came out to say hello. A little farther down the trail we came to the copper producing Planet Mine which was established in 1863. Slowly a town grew around the mine, appropriately named Planet, so we then stopped at the post office that was established in 1902. Other than the post office and adobe remnants of a building, there is no indication of where the people might have lived. From the post office you get a good view of what was the Planet Ranch. Mother Nature is quickly reclaiming the area. We made it to the air up spot with only a few sprinkles. Guess we were lucky as the streets in Havasu were very wet. A special Thank You to Larry & Patti Gant for being tail gunners. Willie Williams, Trail Boss Photo By: Tom Bunnell Cabin Run & Hot Dog Cook O (Level 3.0) n February 16th we had 23 jeeps that met at the kiosk and were split into 2 groups. Ron Satterfield took one group on a level 2 run that was about 4 miles shorter than my run. We all ended up at the cabin within 10 minutes of each other. The day before it was very stormy and rained and I was afraid it would rain on the run day but the weather was blue sky all day and no wind or dust. We went through 105 hot dogs that were donated by Jim Lund from Albertson‟s. I could not have done this run if it were not for the help of Gary Wiskus and Ron Satterfield. We all spent many hours planning it all out and it came off without a hitch. Thanks to Snake Williams for tail gunning. Tom Bunnell, Trail Boss Cabin Run & Hot Dog Cook I Photo By: Penny Leistiko O Red Line n Monday, January 30th, six Jeeps met at the kiosk at Standard Wash to air down and run the Red Line trail run. The run went well with no problems. Thanks to Don and Louise Flood for tail gunning. Ladell Olson, Trail Boss Trail Talk -8- (Level 2.0) was co-leader with Tom Bunnell on this run. We had two groups, the run I took was about a level 2. We went the short way, about 19.5 miles direct to the Cabin. We did take some extra credit for those who wanted the challenge. We were able to contact Tom‟s group by CB radio on a ridge just before dropping into West Mohave Wash. Tom‟s group was North of us on Lost Trails portion of his run. I had a great group of Jeepers, as we continued on to the Cabin on a long bouncy run with no complaints. This was my first run as a Trail Boss, thanks to Tom Bunnell and his help. Thanks to Gary Wiskus for being my tail gunner. It was a fun trip. March 2012 S K-2 Lessons Learned ix Jeeps left Standard Wash, February, 21 with 11 people for a 42.9 mile run. Everyone did a great job of driving during our challenging areas. We had lunch on the top of K-2 near the water catchment that is still in need of repair. Everyone was airing up shortly after 3:00 in Havasu Heights. Thank you Mike Yahrmarkt for being tail gunner and Ladell Olson for another trail repair. There are hundreds of species in the southwestern United States, including leafy forms and lowgrowing crustose species resembling a thick layer of paint. Lichens consist of algae and fungus growing together in a symbiotic relationship. The lichen body is composed of algal cells living inside a compact mass of fungal tissue. The algae are photosynthetic and provide the fungus with carbohydrate nutrients. The delicate algal cells also gain mechanical protection from hostile climatic conditions by being tightly enveloped in a dense meshwork of fungal filaments. They are found not only in hot and sandy environments but also in harsh, cold and icy conditions. Lichens are generally considered as being “pioneer plants” and are able to live in conditions in which other plants cannot survive. Many of them have been estimated to have life spans of decades and even centuries. Photos of Lichens & Petro glyphs taken by Andy Lucas near Castle Mountains Trail Talk -9- March 2012 Gold Spring Run A February 18th, 2012 fter airing down 20 jeeps, and the drivers meeting at the kiosk in Standard Wash, we started the run. This run starts off quite easy and progressively becomes more difficult, with I believe a total of six waterfalls. We had a mix of experienced and new members, as well as 8 guests, and a variety of vehicle equipment on this run, which made it very interesting for me as well as the new members who have not been on this run. The first water fall encountered stands your jeep up almost to the vertical, and as a spotter you get to see the facial expressions on the drivers who have not been up these obstacles, which is most interesting. Some are pie eyed, jaw muscles protruding out past their ear lobes, lips pinched tight, and their hands having a death grip on the steering wheel. And when they top the waterfall, their face returns back to its natural shape only with a big smile from ear to ear, and they are now breathing again. And of course there is a BIG B.S. session at the top with each story somewhat exaggerated with laughter and giggles mixed in. As the day progressed, and the obstacles came and went, we entered Hawks Nest which provided additional comments and some more giggles over the C.B. Upon exiting the canyon, we circled up for lunch. After our bellies were full, we were off again headed towards more challenges. The most notable were the ups & downs, brown shorts hill, and the end of Rattler Pass with the three tier stair step waterfalls near Black Falls. It may be noted, that everyone did an excellent job of driving, and taking care of those in front and behind them. What a great group ! ! ! ! ! Thanks to John Strong for tail gunning and to Bill Trunk for his assistance, and also to Willie for trash pickup, and the pruning of some of the brush & trees along the trail. Connie Hoppe, Community Service Chairman The state flag of Arizona “represents the copper star of Arizona rising from a blue field in the face of a setting sun” (quote from legislation). In 1911 a rifle team from the Arizona Territory was scheduled for a competition match in Ohio and needed a flag to represent their team. Charles Harris (the Adjutant General of the territory) quickly designed what was to become the Arizona state flag (Arizona was admitted to the Union in 1912 - this flag became the official flag of Arizona in 1917). The 13 gold and red “beams” or “rays” on Arizona‟s flag represent the sun setting over the western desert and the original 13 colonies (red and gold colors were also carried by Coronado‟s Spanish expedition in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola in 1540). The Havasu 4 Wheelers Nominating Committee, presented the following slate of officers for the 2012-2013 Jeeping Season at the February General Meeting. The center star signifies copper production (Arizona produces more copper than any other state in the country). The field of blue is the same “liberty blue” as the United States flag. RATING DESCRIPTION 1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades. 2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving. 3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane. 3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop -offs and tight clearance between rocks. 3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. 33” tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated. 3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, Some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances. 4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage. 5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
