Norwegian Cruise Line and DTA
Case study Norwegian Cruise Line and DTA By rolling out Eniram’s Dynamic Trimming Assistant across its fleet of cruise ships, Norwegian Cruise Line is both saving money and reducing its carbon footprint. Customer overview The Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) operates the youngest fleet of cruise ships on the planet and aims to offer the highest quality of accommodation combined with greater flexibility and freedom for passengers on board. Based in Miami, USA, it operates ten ships and specializes in cruises between destinations in Europe, North America, South America, Hawaii and the Caribbean. Like all cruise ship operators, NCL has a large expenditure on fuel. The company knew that the position of its ships in the water had a big impact on fuel consumption and started to seek out ways to better monitor the drag and trim (floating angle) of its vessels. Captain Bjorn Ove Hansen, Director of Nautical Operations at Norwegian Cruise Line, explains: “During day time, it is possible for experienced vessel officers to determine if the trim is close to correct by watching the wake and propeller wash. However, for less experienced officers, judging the trim with eyes only is a difficult task. We were therefore looking for ways to dynamically measure and optimize the trim. We even went as far as using garden hoses to build level gauges that helped us see when the trim was right.” Testimony ”Having now used Eniram’s DTA for some time, we are clearly using less energy to achieve the same speed. The benefit in percentage that we are talking about is a decrease of around five percent in fuel consumption, and this is a conservative estimate.” Captain Bjorn Ove Hansen, Director of Nautical Operations Case study Norwegian Cruise Lines and DTA Solution When its self-built solutions failed to deliver the precision required by the business, NCL found out about Eniram’s Dynamic Trimming Assistant (DTA). This advanced solution has been purpose-developed to help crews determine the optimum trim of their ship during journeys. DTA collects information on the prevailing trim, propulsion power and vessel movements. It then combines this with information on current conditions such as weather and speed to calculate and display the optimum trim in realtime. NCL initially deployed DTA on Norwegian Jewel, one of its premier cruise liners, and crew members soon discovered that the solution is very easy to use. Norwegian Jewel DTA has a selfexplanatory user interface and, when the indicator lies in the green band on the DTA screen, SUMMARY OF BENEFITS crew members instantly know that the trim is right. If the indicator is not in the green band, captains can utilize the up-to-date information presented by DTA to make corrections to the trim. “The system is very helpful, especially at night when it is difficult to get a visual of the vessel’s movement through the water,” says Hansen. ”One of the great parts of the DTA is that there is almost nothing to learn and very few buttons to press – quite the opposite to many systems that have complicated menus and commands that need to be learned by heart.” Benefits Use of DTA on the Norwegian Jewel enabled NCL to dramatically reduce its fuel consumption and therefore reduce its operating costs. “Having now used Eniram’s DTA for some time, we are clearly using less energy to achieve the same speed,” says Hansen. “The benefit in percentage that we are talking about is a decrease of around five percent in fuel consumption, and this is a conservative estimate.” The reduction in fuel doesn’t just save money for the company. It also helps NCL to take greater corporate responsibility for reducing CO2 emissions. •5% reduction in fuel consumption • Lower CO2 emissions • Clear, real-time information for crews onboard • Improved understanding of vessel and fleet performance “The savings have a direct effect on air emissions, for which the cruise industry will be more and more under scrutiny in the coming years,” Hansen says. NCL is so convinced of the benefits of DTA that it has now rolled out the solution to a further seven cruise ships. Over time, it plans to make DTA a standard piece of equipment in all of its current and future luxury cruise liners. Hansen concludes: “Eniram’s DTA solution has proven to be a reliable and beneficial system. It is a very useful aid for officers and brings a measurable reduction in fuel consumption. We plan to keep using the DTA across our fleet, and see further interesting possibilities in utilizing the data collected for other purposes as well.” About AboutEniram Eniram Established in in 2005 byby experienced seafarers and technologists, Eniram delivers solutions enable owners Established 2005 experienced seafarers and technologists, to deliver solutions thatthat enable shipship owners andand 2 operators to to run vessels more efficiently thereby reducing fuel consumption, COCO emissions and operating costs. operators run vessels more efficiently thereby reducing fuel consumption, emissions operating costs. 2 Head Office: Itälahdenkatu 22 22aA FI-00210 Helsinki, FINLAND Tel: +358 10 843 3800 Email: [email protected] Web: www.eniram.fi Additional Offices: Sonning, UK Fort Lauderdale, US Singapore Tel: +44 118 969 9361 Tel: +1 954 681 4320 Tel: +65 6407 1490
