CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC LADIES COMPLETE A GREAT SEASON
In the final box score, the
record will show that Charlotte
Catholic’s Ladies Lacrosse
Team came up one goal short
in the state championship
match. The loss will sting for
a few more weeks, but eventually the focus will turn to
the incredible season for the
team. Behind the success was
a group of Lady Cougars that
played all four seasons; Taylor
White, Caroline Pedlow, Lexi
Jankum, Tarra Dahlke, Elizabeth Hubbell and Elizabeth
Immel.
This group of girls began
playing for Catholic at the
same time the lacrosse program started in 2006. They
have seen the ups and downs
of building a successful program. Their leadership and
dedication to hard work have
been at the core of the team’s success.
In addition to the core group of six,
many other players played large roles in
the team’s success.
Catherine Ellis scored 38 goals for
the season. Lauren Lefeber was right
will attend Presbyterian.

Today marks three full years of publishing The South Charlotte Sports Report. It is hard to believe that
three years ago, a big truck dumped 20,000 papers in my driveway and I went to work getting our story
out to you. Yes, I had planned the paper for many months, but on that day, the green flag dropped and
we were off on our journey. I never thought we would get all those papers distributed. Just hours after
their arrival I walked into my garage and found a six foot black snake sitting on top of the papers... at that
point, I didn’t know what to do. Was it a sign, that maybe I didn’t need to be doing this? I know a black
cat is supposed to bring seven years of bad luck when it crosses your path, but what does a six foot black
snake sitting on top of first issue of The South Charlotte Sports Report lead to?

TREVOR HONEYCUTT
Eleven year old baseball player Trevor
Honeycutt has been named the Winning Awards Young Athlete of the Week.
Trevor is a fifth grade student at Pineville
Elementary School. He currently plays in
the Minors Division at Pineville/Ballantyne
Community Athletic Association. His
skills have progressed and he has become
a solid pitcher.
The snake was removed and I went back to work. Fortunately, at least so far, no real bad luck! I have
spent the last three years building The South Charlotte Sports Report into what I believe is an asset for
our community. I have met so many wonderful young athletes and their families along the way. I have
made some wonderful new friends and learned so much more than I ever thought I knew about youth
sports and this community.
Our paper has grown beyond the newsprint; we now operate about 15 sports camps a year, a wonderful
youth sports photography company, The Battle of the Border Showcase Games for baseball and softball
and The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Dinner. None of these things would have been possible
without the support of our advertisers and readers.
From the very bottom of my heart, I want to thank every company that has ever used The South Charlotte
Sports Report as a marketing tool. Your support has allowed so many youngsters to see their names and
photos in print. If you could only see the joy in a Childs eye when he opens The South Charlotte Sports
Report and finds his name!

The South Charlotte Sports Report and Velocity Sports Performance are teaming up to offer
a Multi-Sports Summer camp designed to help young athletes perform better in a wide range
of activities. Professional sports instruction will be offered in football, basketball, running,
dodge-ball, whiffle ball, soccer and the world famous obstacle course run! Campers will
have tons of opportunities to play, compete and laugh out loud with their friends. We are so
excited to offer this camp at Velocity Sports Performance, a beautiful indoor athletic facility in
South Charlotte.
The camp offers the guarantee of no weather related issues. No rain, No 95 degree weather,
just a beautiful, climate controlled facility for fun and games!
This Multi-Sports Summer Camp is also designed to provide athletes of all ages and abilities
the chance to experience sports performance training geared toward developing ALL types of
athletes. Regardless of the sport you play, this camp will be FUN and CHALLENGING!
As an added bonus, Velocity’s Professional Strength and Conditioning coaches will introduce
you to running mechanics to help improve your speed! They will show campers how to be
more agile and quick with reaction drills. Each day will also focus on a recreational sport or
game to help you implement the new movement techniques you learned!
Campers will be divided into groups according to age and friend requests.
At the end of the camp, World Championship of Obstacle Courses will be held for all campers!
This obstacle course is the favorite of nearly every camper!

The South Charlotte Sports Report is excited to offer what we believe is one of the top cheerleading camps in the area. Our camp offers the best level of instruction for all ages! Whether
your daughter has only watched cheerleaders or has traveled across the region in cheerleading
competitions, this camp is designed to fit the needs of all levels of young cheerleaders!
Former Wake Forest University cheerleader and current Ardrey Kell High School cheerleading
coach Caroline Beglin and her well trained staff of coaches provide excellent instruction for all
campers. The coaches keep the focus on each camper and provide a wonderful week of instruction, all leading up to a special show for the parents at the close of camp.
The South Charlotte Sports Report Cheerleading Camp will provide campers the opportunity to
develop and improve basic cheerleading skills in a fun-filled, positive learning environment. The
camp features small group instruction with emphasis on individual and team cheerleading skills.
Girls of all ages and ability will benefit from the camp, whether your camper is an experienced
cheerleader or learning a routine for the first time.
If your camper is a middle school student looking to develop the skills needed to earn a position
on her schools cheerleading team or a youngster looking to have fun with her friends at camp,
the camp will help your daughter reach her goals. The camp has been developed with an emphasis on first class instruction, organization and more importantly FUN! Each camper will learn
the latest techniques in a fun, low pressure environment from a former member of the nationally
ranked Wake Forest Cheerleading Team!
Each day will consist of fundamental instruction, team building exercises and the development
of cheerleading routines. On the final day of camp, parents will be invited to attend a special
cheerleading performance by the campers!
It’s important to note that this camp sold out last season, so make sure to reserve your spot

CONFERENCE SOFTBALL TITLE
The Ardrey Kell Lady Knights softball team captured gold in the Southwestern
4A Conference Tournament Championship. Behind the play of Kalie Lang and
Jen Rosene, the Knights brought home the gold last week. Kalie, The Greater
Charlotte Hot Stove League Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, led the way
with an incredible pitching performance, allowing four hits and striking out 10 of
the Butler hitters.
The championship team was directed by first year head coach Bob Bove.

Page Providence vs Ardrey Kell

Dateline: May 22, 2009 - Providence High School - As I found my perch high
above the Providence High School Baseball Stadium Friday night around 6:30pm, I kept
one eye down the first base side of the stadium and one eye on the field. Looking down
the first base side of the stadium, baseball fans were pouring in by the hundreds. Word
around town was tonight was going to be a special night, and folks wanted to be a part
of the action. There were Moms, Dads, brothers, sisters, friends, baseball players and
coaches from other schools in the crowd. By the time the first inning rolled around, there
wasn’t a lot of room for anyone else. I was very thankful to have my seat high above the
action, on the top of the hill behind the third base side of home plate.
These two teams are the best of the best in our part of the state. Providence Head
Coach Danny Hignight has an incredible program. The last person on his bench could
be a star at 75% of the other high schools in Charlotte. Coach Hignight takes pride in his
program, his field and his players. On the other side, Coach Hal Bagwell’s third year Ardrey Kell Knights. The Knights came up just short last season, losing in the state championship, and this year has been all about making it back to the championship game.
Along the way The Knights have hit a few road bumps. Their bats have gone cold a
few nights, the defense hasn’t quite lived up to past Bagwell-coached teams, and they
dropped to a three seed following a conference semifinal loss. As late as one week ago,
many had already given up on this edition of The Knights. Fortunately for Coach Bagwell, his players had not given up just yet.
The game started and Providence jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Included in those five
runs was a towering 2-run blast over the scoreboard from Richie Shaffer. Richie is an
amazing player that should be drafted in one of the first few rounds of the Major League
draft. Richie was the first winner of The Greater Charlotte Hot Stove League Baseball
Player of the Year Award, an event very dear to my heart.
Following his home run, he returned to the mound to pitch fastballs in excess of 90
mph! Slowly but surely, the bottom half of the Knights’ batting order chipped away at
the Panthers’ lead. Catcher Taylor Patterson had one of his best hitting nights of the
season, going 2-3. The Knights’ defense improved following the shaky start and they
found an unlikely hero in pitcher Ryan Butler. Butler is a very talented pitcher but he
has struggled at times this season. He came in to relieve Ashton Lover on the mound and
delivered 4 incredible innings of shutout baseball.
With Butler on the mound, Ardrey Kell fought its way to a 6-5 lead. The crowd moved
a little closer to the edge of their seats. Something special was about to happen as the
game entered the bottom half of the seventh inning. Coach Bagwell called on his ace,
left-hander Alex Wood, to come in to close the game. Wood is headed to Georgia next
season to pitch for The Dawgs, but first he had to deliver one more time for the Knights.
Adding even more excitement was the fact that The Panthers would send their first, second and third hitters to the plate. The fireworks were about to happen, The Knights knew
Wood would come through for them and The Panthers were loving their chances with
Tyler Zupcic leading off and Richie Shaffer in the hole!
In a matter of minutes, Wood had disposed of the first two batters and Shaffer stepped
up to the plate. These two have been friends for a while and have the highest level of respect for one another. Someone had to win this war, who would it be? Wood placed
two strikes on Shaffer and then reached back for one more pitch. With all his power,
he managed to force Shaffer to foul tip the ball into Patterson’s glove! Game over, the
Knights are jumping in a big pile and The Panthers are left speechless. One season would
continue, another one had just ended.
Richie Shaffer, one of the best to ever play high school baseball in South Charlotte
stood in disbelief at home plate before wandering off to the outfield. His close friend Tyler Zupcic came to his side for a few moments. These two baseball warriors shared their
pain before both teams lined up to shake hands. The respect between players, coaches
and fans was something to see. Neither team deserved to lose, but the rules say there
must be a winner and a loser.
In my eyes the biggest winner was South Charlotte baseball. This was a game to remember for many years. It was a game loaded with so many kids that will play college
baseball and a few that will play professional baseball and maybe even two or three that
can make it to the major leagues.
I salute Coaches Hal Bagwell and Danny Hignight, the players on both teams and the
amazing amount of fans that made this game so special. Panthers hold your head high,
you have so much to be proud of. I am already looking forward to seeing these two teams
play next year.

The top travel and showcase baseball and softball players in Mecklenburg and York County and their surrounding counties will gather for The Battle of the Border Showcase Games. This prestigious event will
enhance the exposure of upper level travel and showcase baseball and softball along the North Carolina
and South Carolina border. The four days of baseball and softball games and talent showcases are scheduled
to be held on fields at Winthrop University and area high schools. With the exciting schedule, a multitude of

Monday, June 15th - The Battle of the Border Showcase Games for the top Class of 2012 and 2013 travel
and showcase baseball players from Mecklenburg and York County will be held at The Ball Park at Winthrop
University in Rock Hill, SC. The 2013 showcase game begins at 4:30pm and will be followed by the 2012
game.
Tuesday, June 16th - Two Battle of the Border Showcase Baseball Games will be held under the lights for
the top high school aged showcase and travel baseball players from the Mecklenburg and York County areas.
A Class of 2009 game and a special Battle of the Border “Future Stars” Game for members of the 2010 and
2011 classes will be held. The Future Stars game begins at 4:30pm

Tuesday, June 23rd - Two Battle of the Border Softball Showcase Games will be held between the top
showcase and travel softball players from the Mecklenburg and York County areas. An upper class game
for the best travel softball players in the 2009 and 2010 classes will be held following a Future Stars Game
for members of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 classes. Each Softball matchup will be a best of 3 series, with a
shortened game 3 if needed. The Future Stars game begins at 4:00pm
“We are all real excited to offer this unique event for the best travel and showcase players in our area,” said
Tripp Roakes, Publisher of The South Charlotte Sports Report, an area youth sports newspaper and marketing company. “Along with Jeff Schaefer at Carolina Baseball Center (CBC), we developed this event to allow
the showcase and travel players to represent their area, showcase their talents and enjoy the game on tremendous facilities at Winthrop University. Many of these players spend their summers in Florida, Georgia
and other far away areas, we wanted to give them a chance to play a home showcase game.”

TWITTER IS HAVING AN IMPACT
ON COLLEGE RECRUITING:

The cat and mouse game continues. As various technologies become mainstream
in our day to day lives, the ultra competitive world of collegiate recruiting is never
far behind. Twitter has now become the latest way for coaches to maintain a line of
communication with their coveted recruits, while not violating tight NCAA regulations governing their interaction with high school athletes.
As texting became all the rage in the middle of the decade, college coaches were
quick to integrate the burgeoning technology into their bag of tricks. Before long,
restrictions governing the frequency of texts between coaches and athletes evolved
into an all out ban as parents started receiving pages and pages of unexpected bills
and coaches abused the technology.
More recently, Twitter has burst on the scene as the latest way to stay in touch
with friends, co-workers and celebrity goings on. Because Tweets (Twitter postings)
are not considered to be direct postings; the information is disbursed to all followers of the individual account, they do not violate NCAA regulations. College Football
mastermind Pete Carroll at University of Southern California, Lane Kiffin at Tennessee and Basketball coaches Tom Crean and John Calipari all have started using
the application to maintain constant “communication” with their recruits.
So, for now, the plot thickens. As more and more coaches sign on and become
familiar with Twitter, and it’s possibilities, the NCAA will surely take note. It’s just
a matter of time.
But, for the time being, if you or a son or daughter is communicating with a
school or a program, make sure to ask if the coaching staff is on Twitter. While it’s
still fair game per the NCAA make sure that you use it to your advantage. It’s a great
way to stay in tune with where a program is going and how the staff operates and
communicates. All important things when making a decision on where to play your
sport in college.

people out. Since we are now

Athletic Accomplishments: Alex is recognized as one of the top 3-4 junior tennis players in
North Carolina. He has competed for many years in tournaments all across the country and brought
home a large variety of championships. This season, the sophomore led the Ardrey Kell Knights to a
16-1 record and the Southwestern 4-A Championship. The Knights advanced all the way to the dual
team regionals before losing this year.
Athletic Accomplishments: Rachel recently completed an ultra-successful high school lacrosse
career. This season she was named all-conference and 2nd team all-state. Rachel was also selected to
play in the North Carolina All-Star Game, The Top 50 Queen City Lax Starz. She was also named as the
Most Valuable Offensive Player for Marvin Ridge High School. Her stats for this season included: 69
goals, 42 ground balls, 49 draw controls and 29 caused turnovers.
Alex has a busy summer planned as he will hit the junior circuit in search of greater success.
Academic Accomplishments: Rachel has a 4.2 grade point average and is a member of The National Honor Society and The DECA Club. She will attend Presbyterian College on an athletic scholarship next season.

After you go to the audiologist and a hearing loss is ruled out, start thinking about
auditory processing as the reason your child frequently says huh? What? The
huh? What? Is often used as an unconscious tactic to get more processing time.
What is auditory processing? It is the minds way of localizing, discriminating,
identifying, manipulating, sorting/organizing and deriving meaning from sound
stimuli. Why is auditory processing such a critical skill? Auditory processing
helps us listen quickly and accurately and is a base skill needed for reading. In
about 75% of individuals with reading difficulties it is an auditory processing
weakness that causes the reading deficit.
Here are some of the red flags that your child may have an auditory processing
deficit:

Your child has good overall knowledge yet they have difficulty following specific directions.
Their space (desk/room) and storytelling is disorganized.
They have difficulty understanding word humor.
They have articulation (speech) errors.
They frequently use words incorrectly.
When they speak they use many vague words “you know”, “thingamajig”,
“what’s you call it”.
They have many word mispronunciations and substitutions.
They have difficulty listening with background noise and distractions.
They love listening to stories.

They have difficulty learning to read, they frequently mispronunciations or
substitutions words.
Their writing has lots of spelling errors.
They frequently ask for repetition.
Often auditory processing difficulties co-occur with memory difficulties.
They are slow at responding to questions or requests.
Their hearing is normal.
Auditory processing deficits respond well to targeted and intense treatment in a
relatively short period of time. The focus of treatment is a combination of cognitive and sound manipulation exercises. You can try some of the following activities at home.
Read signs when you are in the car and quickly name rhyming words: “stop” becomes hop, mop, top, chop, flop, blop, crop, drop, shop.
Name words that begin with or end with a particular sound for example: “t” at the
beginning of words - take, two, touch, top, tot, tooth, tag and as an end sounds
dent, it, pet, rabbit, and boat. Remember to focus on the sound not the letter
name.

The Ardrey Kell High School Men’s Tennis Team completed a
successful season last week. The Knights captured the Southwestern 4A Conference Championship and recorded a regular
season record of 16-1. Alex Calott led the team from the #
1 seed position. His singles play for Coach Roy Hudson was
a catalyst to success in every match. Peter Tonon and Ryan
Forbes finished the season as one of the top eight doubles
teams in North Carolina.

NCHSWLA ALL-STAR GAME
Congratulations to the local lacrosse players chosen to play
in the NCHSWLA All-Star game held recently at Ardrey Kell
High School. These young ladies were among the top players
in the state and earned the opportunity to play in the game.
The all-star game was played as a lead in to the state championship game held that same afternoon between Charlotte
Catholic and Apex.
