LOFS historical information.
Additionally, ad sponsor information will be included
in our festivity banners, 50th
Anniversary t-shirts, and
much more.
Also, LOFS residents can
take advantage of the opportunity to participate in our
“50th Anniversary Family
Donor” program at a cost of
$50. Included will be recognition in our LOFS 50th
Anniversary Historical Book,
listing on LOFS event t-shirts,
and on our LOFS website under Family Donor. Forms to
register for the Family Donor

Office, with payment to be
made at the POA Office.

Spring is here; at least I
hope so by the time you’re
reading this. Time to box up
your winter clothes for the
season and begin to enjoy the
warmer weather and everything that Lakes of the Four
Seasons has to offer.
Residents will take to
the streets walking, jogging, biking, roller blading
and skate boarding. For the
safety of you and your children, we suggest utilizing
the half-mile long walking
path at Lion’s park, just off
Kingsway Drive near the
117th Avenue gate.
Some residents will begin
taking their dogs for walks
along the streets as well. If
you would rather take your
dog to an enclosed area away
from all the traffic you can
do so by taking them to the
LOFS Dog Park. You can
purchase an annual Dog Park
pass at the LOFS POA office.
The POA maintenance
staff has been active in cleaning up from this winter’s
damage and I want residents
to be careful when driving
by the maintenance vehicles
and the personnel that may
be walking along the road
sides picking up debris and
accumulated trash.
This time of year we are in
the midst of the annual dues
collection. The office staff
is prepared for the busy season. With the current ability
for residents to mail in their
bills, dues assessments, and
even the ability to get a decal for a new car by mail it is
not a requirement to visit the
POA office. As in the past
the staff is always willing to
make a special appointment
for those in need.
• Please store your garbage
and recycling receptacles
where they cannot be seen
from the street, the lake,
parks or the golf course.
• Take down your Christmas
decorations and pack them
away until next season.
• Please adhere to the speed
limits throughout the community. The speed limit
for all of the roads in the
Subdivision will be 20 miles
per hour unless otherwise
posted, except for the fol-

West and South Lake Shore
Drives, Sunnyslope Drive,
Kingsway Drive, and Four
Seasons Parkway; which
are the major traffic arteries in the Subdivision and
shall have a speed limit of 25
miles per hour unless otherwise posted.
• Clear all debris from each
end of your culverts and in
your swales to allow storm
water to flow freely.
• When you’re doing your
spring cleaning of picking
up the branches that fell over
winter and the remaining
leaves on your yard; do not
burn them. We are not allowed to burn yard waste in
Lake and Porter Counties.

2016 POA Board Election
Schedule
Three of the five seats on
the LOFS POA Board of
Directors are up for election
this year. Here are the key
dates:
• Wednesday, June 1
– Thursday, June 30 Candidacy petitions will be
available at the POA office
for all residents wishing to be
listed on the ballot.
• Friday, July 1 – Friday, July
15 – Completed petitions may
be turned in at the POA office. The order the ballots are
printed, listing the candidates’
names, will be determined by
a blind draw only if there are
more than one person turning in their petitions on the
same day to the POA office,
and documentation verified as
complete and valid.
• Monday, August 1 –
Candidates Night issues forum at 7:30 p.m. in the LOFS
Clubhouse ballroom.
• Friday, August 5 – Ballots
will be mailed to all property
owners of record.
• Wednesday, September 7
– Polls closed; ballots must
be received by 9 a.m. at the
Crown Point Post Office
box. Ballots will be counted
beginning at 7 p.m. in the
LOFS West Lounge. Property
Owners have the option to
mail in their election ballots
or drop them inside a locked
ballot box that will be located
inside the LOFS Clubhouse.
Ballots may be dropped inside the ballot box anytime
the Clubhouse is open. The
last day to drop them inside
the box will be Wednesday,
September 7 by noon. The
election chairperson will be
the only person that can unlock the box to retrieve ballots
the day of verification and
counting on September 7.

Keenagers
Lakes of the Four Seasons

The Keen-Agers will
have their April meeting
on the 21st at the LOFS
Clubhouse. The bar will
open at noon and a delicious
luncheon will be served
at 1 p.m. Entertainment is
scheduled for 2 p.m., after
a short meeting and a 50/50
raffle; adjournment will be
around 3 p.m. Besides the
third Thursday of the month
meetings, the club plans activities, such as going to Four
Winds Casino, choosing a
play to see in Valparaiso
or Munster, a boat ride on
the Chicago Spirit, and the
annual bus trip; this year it
is Myrtle Beach. With over
10 successful fundraisers to
their credit, it helps pay for
all their fun.
The yearly membership fee is $22 and the
monthly luncheon cost is
$14. The August auction will
be new and exciting; a telethon event is being worked
on, stay tuned for all the
details. The club’s popularity has put new members on
a waiting list status. Please

Fishing Club
Lakes of the Four Seasons

The LOFS Fishing Club
will be holding its meeting
on Tuesday, April 12, at 7
pm in the lower level of the
19th Hole. Topics we will be
going over are the upcoming tournaments, fundraising
plans, and the trip the club
will be taking this year.
The first tournament of
the year will be on Sunday,
April 17, on Bass Lake. Start
time is 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The cost of the tournament
is $70 per two-man team.
This tournament is a ‘trolling motor only’ tournament,
and you must have a work-
ing live well in your boat.
There will also be two
more tournaments held in
May. The first tournament
will be held on Sunday, May
1, on Bass Lake. This will
also be a ‘trolling motor
only’ tournament. The second one will be held on Lake
Holiday on Saturday, May
21. Both tournaments will
start at 6 a.m. Cost is $70 per
two-man team.

4 ft. high x 4 ft. wide x 6 ft.

‘Renter’s Option’ changed by Board of Directors Obituary ~ Betty J. Ray (nee Kuenzel)
On February 8, 2016, at the
Executive Session, the Board
of Directors voted (3-2) to allow renters who pay the renter’s option of $255 the ability
to purchase golf at the associate rate plus the cart fee. In
the past a renter would have
had to pay full dues AND the
associate golf rate.
This is being done in an
effort to show renters what
LOFS has to offer so they will
eventually purchase property
in the community.
If the renter’s option is
paid, they are also authorized
the use of any and all parks,
tennis courts, ball fields,
beaches, fishing from shore,
swimming pool (after payment of pool tag fee), golf
course (after payment of the
Guest Weekday or Weekend
fee), dog park (after payment
of dog park fee), subscription
to the “Seasonal” newspaper,
and the privilege of purchasing a non-course use decal
for their golf cart at the cost
of $130. Two (2) automobile
decals will be issued for free
with proof of current vehicle
registration for each vehicle
(third and subsequent decals
will cost $15 each).
Renters are not allowed
boating privileges and no
charging privileges at restaurants.
The annual dues on the
property they are renting
must be paid before they can
proceed with this option.

Get Acquainted scramble
will follow the breakfast with
foursomes being made during the breakfast.

Women’s Golf
Association
Lakes of the Four Seasons

I want to take this opportunity to invite the ladies
of the LOFS community
to join our Women’s Golf
Association and Thursday
morning league. Our WGA
and league offer many options from skilled to beginner
golfers.
The WGA provides members’ weekend handicapped
events throughout the season
and may be a good match for
those that are working or cannot commit to the Thursday
morning league but enjoy
competitive golf.
The Thursday morning
league consists of 18-hole
play for ladies with an established handicap that enjoy
playing with other skilled
women on a regular basis.
Our 9-hole league is a great
place to start for the beginner,
a person with time restraints
or those with less endurance
than they once had. Last
year, we also included 9-hole
play from our “family” tees
making those rounds almost
a “par 3” situation.
Some of our older members are utilizing these “family” tees along with women
experiencing health limitations. These ladies still enjoy
the exercise and the social
camaraderie that our league
offers.
This year, the LOFS community is commemorating
our 50th anniversary and so

Lakes of the Four Seasons Men’s Golf
Association will function as a civic
organization for the community of Lakes
of the Four Seasons. The organization
will have the purpose of providing
community service and supporting
enhancements to the Lakes of the Four
Seasons community. The Association
will support any local charitable
organization through our membership
participation and financial help. This
organization will also provide guidance
for the golf course within the Four
Seasons community.

Richwine officiated. Funeral
Betty J. Ray (nee Kuenzel),
age 89 of Lakes of the Four
Seasons, passed away March
14, 2016. She was a longtime
member of The Church of the
Four Seasons and worked as
a librarian at the Lake County
Public Library. Betty was a
loving mother, grandmother,
and
great-grandmother.
She will be greatly missed.
Betty was preceded in death
by her husband- Robert,
Sr. She is survived by her
loving children- Lorie (Art)

Political sign rules and regulations
Winfield Wolf Cub Scouts visit LOFS
Volunteer Fire Department
Nicole Kadelak is the Den Mother and Cub Master
of the Wolf Cub Scout Pack 406 in Winfield, and
they recently visited the LOFS Fire Department.
Kadelik said, “We were working on our hometown
hero elective belt loop. Wolf Cub Scouts from
pack 406 in Winfield visited the amazing LOFS
Volunteer Fire Department and we had a wonderful
experience and thank them for all their service to
the community.” Wolf Cub Scouts pictured from

Lakes of the Four Seasons
are as follows:
1. Political signs may only
be displayed by the owner(s)
of a numbered lot on said lot
during the period between
thirty (30) days before and
five (5) days after the date
of the election to which the
signs relate.
2. The size of the signs may
not exceed two (2) feet by
three (3) feet.
3. No more than two (2)
signs may be displayed on
any numbered lot pursuant to
this resolution.
4. The Lakes of the Four
Seasons Property Owners’
Association, Inc., reserves
the right to remove any signs
that violate the rules contained in this resolution.
5. As used in this resolution,
“sign” refers only to a sign
advocating:
A. The election or defeat of
one (1) or more candidates
for:
a) nomination; or
b) election: to a public office;
B. support for or opposition
to:
a) a political party; or
b) a political party’s candidates; or
C. the approval or disapproval of a public question
D. The election of one (1)
or more candidates for the

Property Owners Association Board of Directors.
6. The penalty for violation
of this resolution shall be as
the Board may provide from
time to time in its statement
of fines.

Indiana’s state parks are
looking for volunteers to
serve as campground hosts
in exchange for free camping
during their service. Hosts
work a minimum of 20 hours
per week. The volunteer
period varies at sites, based
on the number of applicants
and on the amount and type
of work required.
Properties are looking
for dedicated campers who
enjoy working outdoors,
with people and with DNR
staff. Properties needing
volunteers for hosts are
Brown County, Clifty Falls,
Ouabache, Pokagon, and
Potato Creek state parks, and
Monroe and Hardy lakes.
Campground hosts are
also needed at State Forest
campgrounds. A complete

Non-Point Source Pollution
Non-point
source
pollution, unlike pollution
from industrial sites or
sewage treatment plants
comes from many sources.
Non-point source pollution
is caused by rainfall or
snowmelt running over
the ground. As it runs it
picks up and carries natural
and man-made pollutants
finally depositing them into
lakes, rivers wetlands and
groundwater.
Following
a
heavy
rainstorm for example, the
rain water will flow across
parking lots, streets and
driveways. The rain water
will pick up what we have
left behind. When you see
a rainbow colored sheen
flowing across the ground,
this is oil left by cars on
the asphalt. This is nonpoint source pollution. This
pollution will runoff into the
ditches and most likely into
our waterways and lakes.
This is only one example of
non-point source pollution.
Controlling and preventing
non-point source pollution is
unlike controlling pollution
from a factory, called point
source pollution. There you
can identify the problem and
stop it. Non-point source
pollution is all around
us and is every person’s
responsibility,
including
yours. There are many things
all of us can do to reduce
non-point source pollution,
including:
• Plant grass, trees and
shrubs in bare areas. This
is one of the most important
things you can do to reduce

mandatory in 2016
Many boating safety courses are offered throughout
the country and some states
are now mandating anyone
wanting to pilot a watercraft
to complete an approved
boater safety course. There
are many ways in which individuals can educate, prepare
and equip themselves to be
safe boaters. Some courses
and classes can be taken online, some sent conveniently
to your home, and many in
person through various organizations and agencies.
Over the past few years
the Lakes Department has
been working with the Lakes
Enhancement Association
(LEA) to find a better way
to educate our boaters on the
importance of knowing the
rules and creating safer boating practices in LOFS.
Boating and fishing citations are issued to several residents annually mainly due
to uninformed residents and
guests that have not read the
rules and regulations book
that is given to them when
they get their boat sticker. We
have also hosted free boater
safety courses with our local
Coast Guard Auxiliary that
resulted in low attendance.
In an effort to help our
residents become safe and
informed boaters, the LEA
and WSA developed a free
online test made available at
www.lofs.org to be taken by
anyone wishing to purchase a
boat sticker. Once the test is
passed our POA office will
receive an email with your
name and contact information. This test is good for 2
years and must be retaken
by the boat sticker purchaser.
If a family member or guest
borrows a LOFS stickered
watercraft, the person who
takes the test and purchases
the boat sticker is responsible
for their actions.

grass, trees and shrubs will
reduce and absorb runoff,
and their roots will hold
the soil together, reducing
erosion.
• Properly dispose of motor
oil and household chemicals.
Never pour chemicals on the
ground or in storm drains,
where they will eventually
make their way into a stream
or river. Motor oils and
household chemicals can
harm, and even kill, aquatic
life. Used motor oil should
be taken to oil recycling
facilities.
• Use fertilizers and
pesticides sparingly on
lawns and gardens. Excess
fertilizer and pesticides can
damage your plants. The
excess often winds up in
runoff then in local water
bodies. To reduce the use
of pesticides, use beneficial
insects such as ladybugs
and praying mantises to
control unwanted pests in
the garden. Try a technique
used in agriculture known
as “scouting.” Go out and
survey your yard or garden
to see what pests are present
and then use pesticides only
if natural predators cannot
keep the pests in check.
• Put trash in its place. Keep
it out of storm drains, where
it will clog up the drain or
end up in the nearest stream
or lake.
• Organize neighborhood
cleanups. Go on walks
in
your
neighborhood,
removing trash and debris
as you go. It’s a good way
to meet your neighbors, and
you can learn a lot about the
natural environment.
• Recycle plastic, glass, and
paper. Less trash means
less material in the waste
stream, and reducing the
waste stream is the goal of all
measures to control nonpoint
source pollution.

Safety Test; this will take you to

com. Once there you will need
to click on signup which is located towards the right hand
corner of the page and follow
the registration instructions.
On the course catalog page,
check “enroll” to the right of
“Boating and Fishing Rules
and Regulations” - click ‘enroll
now’. You will get a prompt
“New Course Information”,
click ‘OK’.
Click ‘view course’ button. Read the content clicking
“Next Page” at the bottom
right to advance pages/sections.
At the conclusion of the
course, you will be prompted
for your username and password to digitally sign your
completion of this course.
Once complete, click the
“submit digital signature”
button. Once digitally signed,
you must take a test; click the
“Start Test” button on the
right side of the page.
Once you have passed
the test, click the “Send
Transcripts” button to submit
your passing score towards
receiving a POA sticker for
your boat. When prompted “e-mail transcripts to”,
check the checkbox next to
the course completed (e.g.
Boating and Fishing Rules
and Regulations” then enter ‘[email protected]’, then
click ‘preview transcript’.
When you see your transcript, print this page for your
records then click the “send
transcripts” button.
You are finished; click the
logout button towards the upper right of the screen.
A hardcopy of the test is
available at the POA Office
upon request.

Lakes of the Four Seasons

Another golf season is
here! I am looking forward
to another great golf season.
The warmer than normal
weather this winter has given
me nightmares of summers
past. The strong El Nino has
reaped havoc on our area in
years past, causing difficulty
in keeping the highest-quality turf, especially in lowlying fairway areas.
The last warm winter was
in 2012 and that was the hottest summer I have dealt with
in my career. Since then we
have made several changes
to our agronomic plan in
preparation for a future hot
summer. The topdressing of
the fairways, slice aerification, and monitoring the soil
moisture has made a huge
difference in turf quality.
This spring we are going
to try to get as many projects
done before May 1. That is
when leagues and golf outings really get started. The
only major projects planned
for this year are building
a drop area tee on hole 16
where the cart path and water
meet. The drainage ditches
on number 10 are going to
be cleaned out and lined with
erosion cloth and rip-rap.
Over the last several years
the rains have slowly made
the ditch wider and wider.
All the stumps left from the
Ash trees are going to be
ground out and filled with
dirt and seed and covered
with netting.
Lastly, the worst word
in the golf dictionary.
Aerification is Monday April
4; at that time we will also be
aerifying fairways, tees, and
rough areas around the fairways and greens. Sand will
be used to fill the holes in the
greens.
This is a two-step process.
The first step is to fill them
as much as possible the day
of the aerification and then
again on the Monday of the
following week. This is the
same process as in years
past. This year we are going
to topdress the fairways the
same week as aerification.
I know every golfer hates
aerification but it is the most
important part of any agronomic plan. The warmer the
weather the faster the holes
will heal and the faster we
get back to normal golf. We
only go through this once per
year thankfully.
I am hopeful we will have
a great golf season and enjoy
the 50th anniversary of this
great community. The first
greens committee will be
the first Monday in May at 6
p.m. at my shop.

Tracy has taken all that life
has thrown at her and turned
it into a one-woman comedy
show. Getting married, having children, gaining weight,
and growing a beard are the
essence of taking what life
gives you and turning it into
laughter.
Her comedy show was
inspired when she selfpublished her book, ‘Laugh
Anyway Mom’. She wants to
show her audience that even
if you’re depressed, with a
dose of laughter you forget
your problems. If you want

Now is the time of year
to check your grips while
the weather is still intermittent, the condition of your
grips is one of the most important items in your bag. If
your grips are worn or have
a shiny appearance, there is
a very good chance that it is
slick and will cause you to
grip your club too tight when
the season begins. An overly
tight golf grip is one of the
number one mistakes golfers
make, and it is also one of the
easiest to correct.
When you set up over the
top of the ball, you want to
have a very relaxed grip pressure, not so loose to the point
of throwing the club midswing but not so tight that
you can feel tension in your
hand, wrist, forearm or shoulder. Starting off your swing
with a tight grip will lead to
less flexibility, which in turn
leads to loss of distance, loss
of fluid tempo, loss of accuracy and is a key indicator for
topped and fat shots.
A golfer tends to grip the
club tighter mid-swing then
they did at address so starting off with a strong grip
will only make this problem
area worse. With a relaxed
grip, you will in turn have a
relaxed body, a more fluid
swing with better tempo,
which will improve distance
and accuracy especially off
the tee.
If you are unsure of the
condition of your golf grips
feel free to bring them by the
golf shop to have inspected
by the professional staff.
Many times the grips simply
need to be cleaned and are
for the most part salvageable
when they seem to be beyond
repair. Just like your car tires
the rubber on your golf clubs
needs to be conditioned from
time to time to maintain
tackiness of the grip, so remember to regularly check
them throughout the season.

Conceal your cans
Every week officers are
finding visible trashcans on
the properties within the seasons. We see them in front of
the homes, on the sides, in the
backyards, or still sitting at the
roads edge. The covenants for
the Lakes of the Four Seasons
states under section 7.7 titled
Concealment of Other Trash
Receptacles.
“Every outdoor receptacle
for ashes, trash, rubbish, or
garbage shall be so placed
and kept as not to be visible
from any street, lake, or golf
course within the Subdivision
at any time except the times
when refuse collections are
being made”.
We understand that there
are times when Waste
Management has not picked
up garbage for people or directed some people to leave
their cans out for replacement. However, a lot of times
this information has not been
forwarded on to the Security
Department. This means
with that lack of knowledge
officers are seeing visible
trashcans and enforcing the
rule as stated above.
To alleviate any issues
where someone might get
upset for being cited because
we were not aware of your
circumstances we ask that
you notify the department
that your trashcan will be out
for whatever reason.

I am sure I am not the only
one still getting the scamming phone calls at my home
saying I have computer issues and they need to log in
to fix it, or the IRS is after me
and I need to send money to
resolve the problem.
Protecting your personal
information should always
be your number one goal. I
have said it before and will
continue to say it; criminals
work seven days a week trying to find new ways to steal
your information so they can
benefit; why make it easy
for them? We have all heard
about these types of scams
whether it’s through email,
home phones, text messaging scams, to fraudulent
bowling team. She was also
named team captain on the
bowling team and earned
multiple team MVP awards
on her way to numerous regional and sectional qualifiers and championships.
Spalla is very involved
outside of school, where she
has frequently volunteered at
multiple blood drives, rummage sales at her church and
other community service
projects in Valparaiso.

to help you, tell them you want
it sent to them in a certified letter and on an official letterhead
for that branch or department.
See what their reply is.
Unfortunately, these criminals tend to sway themselves
towards the elderly because
they see them as vulnerable
and more likely to believe
the lies because they know
that will be quick to jump to
the emotional tie of a family
member in need.
So what do you do? To start,
don’t feel pressured in to making quick decisions because
they need an answer NOW.
Nothing they are selling or telling you can’t wait a day or two
until you know the facts.
Ask the person that you are
speaking to for their webpage
information then research the
company on trusted sites like
the Better Business Bureau
(www.BBB.org). See if they
even exist!
If the person who is calling is claiming to be from
your bank, IRS, utility company, or whoever discontinue
the call then call the com-
pany direct using the number
from one of your past bills,
or phone numbers listed on
your credit card, or simply a
trusted government site that
ends with “.gov.”
Simple research on new
scams can save you a lot of
headaches and grief and the
loss of money.

~ Letter to the Editor ~
19th Hole New Year’s Eve
Party- “The Truth”
This editorial is being published to clear up some misconceptions and/or rumors
that seem to be going around
in regards to the private New
Year’s Eve party that was
held at the 19th Hole.
It seems that some have
been misguided to believe
that I used my position as a
LOFS board of director to
close down the 19th Hole in
order to host my own private
party. Unfortunately, though
some would like to believe
this in order to help fuel their
own personal agenda, this
cannot be further from the
truth.
The fact is, the 19th Hole
was decided to be closed for
the second year in a row at
the beginning of November
by the current food and
beverage director, Valerie
Gernenz; without any outside influence.
Over the last 12 years, I
have attended the Clubhouse
New Year’s Eve celebration,
which I may mention, had
always been a great time.
Unfortunately, this year’s
theme was not appealing to
my wife and me, so it was
decided to host a party at our
home for 50 of our closest
family and friends.
In early December, when
we learned that the 19th Hole
was going to be closed, I approached Valerie in regards
to renting out the facility.
Not only would this offer
more space for my party, it
would also create an addi-

tional revenue stream for the
19th Hole.
At first, Valerie was not
in favor of this idea due to
the fact that she didn’t want
the party to have an adverse
effect on ticket sales for the
Clubhouse celebration. After
learning that ZERO of my
guests were planning to attend the Clubhouse party,
she decided to rent out the facility and take the additional
revenue stream.
At the end of the day, everyone had a wonderful time
ringing in 2016 while at the
same time producing over
$1,800 in revenue at a facility
that was otherwise planned
to be closed. In addition, this
party also produced income
for three of our employees
that were more than eager to
help with this event.
I hope that after reading
this, those of you whom are
so deeply concerned now
know the facts and can rest
your mind at ease knowing
that this party was held with
the best interest of the community in mind. If anyone

Memories of 1966, when LOFS was ‘born’
In 1966 McDonalds boasted over 1 million burgers
sold and began using frozen
french fries. Women’s skirt
hemlines began to rise above
the knee, cigarettes first carried the “hazardous to your
health” label, the Gemini
10 space mission executed
a double rendezvous, and
Ronald Reagan became governor of California.
Meanwhile, farm owners
around Four Seasons grew
corn, wheat, soybeans, and
cared for their livestock. In
fact, on a quiet morning,
when the wind was blowing
just right, cows mooing in
the distance could be heard
through an open window
in Four Seasons homes.
Everyone knew each other,
and there were many clubhouse social gatherings.
Because of the many farms
and hills on Randolph and
109th streets, snowy winters

As Lakes of the Four Seasons celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016, we thought
it would be interesting to take a look back at some of the events that occurred each
month during 1966 when the community was first being built.

13 years old, a snowstorm buried LOFS. At the
