Did you know this is the largest professional go kart
street race in the world?
Experience the thrill of watching go karts roar through
the tree-lined streets of downtown Rock Island at
speeds over 80 mph as thousands of spectators
cheer on these professional kart drivers on Labor
Day Weekend. Motorsports fans across the nation
know if it’s Labor Day Weekend, it’s time for the
Rock Island Grand Prix, one of the premier
professional karting events in the world!! Drivers
representing 35 states, Canada, Mexico, France,
Colombia, England, Poland, Costa Rica, Argentina,
Bermuda, Italy, Poland and the Philippines have
participated in what has become the largest karting
street race in the world and one of the largest and
most popular kart racing events in North America.
Each year more than 250 race teams set up shop in
Rock Island for a chance to win at “The Rock.”
The Rock Island Grand Prix combines the thrill of
professional racing with the energy of a District
event in the heart of the community. Karting, the
fastest growing race phenomenon in the U.S.A.,
draws thousand of enthusiastic fans. Best of all, it’s

The Rock Island Grand Prix will celebrate its 16th
anniversary on September 3-4, 2011. Be part of
the excitement and let your company benefit from

Once again this year, the Rock Island Grand Prix
will be run on a ¾ mile race course using the
smooth streets of downtown Rock Island.

Our volunteers are a valuable part of the
success of the Rock Island Grand Prix, the
world’s largest and safest karting street
race. We are not only proud of our race
safety record, but also the safe history of
our volunteers.

We race and work rain or shine.
•
By helping to present the Rock Island Grand
Prix, you are helping to make a free event
for many Quad-Cities families. Fun, free and
safe family events make Rock Island and
the Quad-Cities a great place to live. You
are also helping to put Rock Island and the
Quad-Cities on the motorsports “map.”
Spread the word by making our friends,
family and neighbors aware of this fastpaced race weekend.
Your help is needed!
We need help recruiting for the following positions:
•
Fence teams: Groups of 6-8 are needed Friday
and Sunday evenings to place barrels, anchor with
sandbags and hang fence. The most physical of
our volunteers needs. Teams are needed for
approximately 4 hours each day. General volunteer
groups are also needed for a variety of physical
duties during these same periods of set up and tear
down
•
On Track Officials: Volunteers with a background
or solid knowledge of racing are needed to work as
on-track corner officials. Involves full-day
commitment both Saturday and Sunday. Must be
athletic and able to lift 50 pounds with ease.
•
Registration: These volunteers work indoors at the
Holiday Inn during the day Friday and Saturday
morning.
•
Pit Gates: Workers are needed both Saturday and
Sunday to sell pit passes, answer questions and
hand out programs. Most of the work is seated
under a patio umbrella.
A wide variety of tasks
•
Souvenir Sales: Rock Island Grand Prix
memorabilia is sold in a tent on the infield.
•
Transponders: Volunteers are need to hand out
and recover timing transponders Saturday
afternoon and Sunday.
•
Scales: Work with our tech officials in registering
scale weighs of competitors and karts.
•
Banners: Crews are needed Friday and Sunday
evenings to hang banners around the track with
cable ties on Friday and retrieve on Sunday.
•
Crossing Guards: Work with our professional
security officers to control the flow of pedestrian
traffic during racing Saturday and Sunday.
•
Awards Ceremony: Volunteers can help as
greeters and facilitators at our Sunday evening
awards ceremony.

Fence Distribution: Volunteers can help distribute
fence and barrels throughout the downtown
Wednesday and Thursday during the week prior to
the race.
•
Trash Control: Teams are needed throughout race
weekend to tour the downtown, pick up trash and
empty trash containers that are full.
•
Publicity: Work with our committee to excute event
publicity and race weekend and in weeks leading
up to the event.
