1 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW 2O15 YEAR IN REVIEW CPA AUSTRALIA MALAYSIA 2 HONG MALAYSIA KONG 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW 3 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW ABOUT CPA AUSTRALIA CPA Australia is one of the world’s largest accounting bodies with a global membership of more than 155,000 members working in 118 countries around the world, with more than 25,000 members working in senior leadership positions. Our core services to members include education, training, technical support and advocacy. Employees and members work together with local and international bodies to represent the views and concerns of the profession to governments, regulators, industries, academia and the general public. Our sphere of operations covers staffed offices in all states and territories in Australia as well as in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK and Vietnam. CPA Australia has had presence in Malaysia since 1956, during which significant contributions were made to the development of the Malaysian accounting profession. Since then, the strength of the CPA Australia brand has grown from year to year and as we celebrate our 60 years anniversary in 2016, our membership has breached the 10,000 mark. The office plays a role in mainstream issues through involvement in various committees and government relation activities and also undertakes a range of activities which positions CPA Australia as the premier global brand for strategy, leadership and international business. These include: • outreach to institutions of higher learning • facilitating a varied and highly relevant suite of professional development paths and solutions; and • forging employer partnerships CPA Australia is a scheduled body under the Malaysian Accountants Act 1967. 4 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR GST TRANSITION IN MALAYSIA In the lead up to the implementation of GST in Malaysia in April, CPA Australia undertook several initiatives including conducting meetings with the Royal Malaysian Customs to share Australia’s experience in the implementation of GST. Australia introduced GST in year 2000. CPA Australia in the New Straits Times A series of articles were written by Paul Drum, Head of Policy, CPA Australia to help educate members and the general Malaysian public on what the tax changes meant and to alleviate concerns for many businesses. These articles saw traction in leading mainstream print and online media, The New Straits Times and its sister publication, Berita Harian. A good number of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops for the year also focused on GST related topics including several industry focused workshops that were well received by both members and the general public. 5 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW BOOT CAMP FOR STUDENTS CPA Australia, together with Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp) organised a boot camp for 40 university students on semester break from abroad. The boot camp held at the CPA Australia Kuala Lumpur office on 12 January enabled employers to share updates on employment opportunities in Malaysia for graduates. ACCOUNTANT GENERAL’S OFFICE JOINS THE RANKS OF REP The Accountant General’s office was made a Recognised Employer Partner (REP) for its strong support to upskill its workforce with the CPA Australia designation. A total of 50 staff of the Accountant General’s office are currently pursuing the CPA Program. At a special event in June to mark the REP status, Accountant General Dato’ Haji Che Pee Shamsuddin was made an honorary member of CPA Australia. Dato’ Haji Che Pee received his award from Jeff Hughes, Chief Operating Officer – Member Services, CPA Australia 6 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW CONNECTING WITH THE MINISTRY OF FINANCE On 4 February, Malaysia Division President Wong Chin Aik led a visit to Datuk Chua Tee Yong, the Deputy Minister of Finance to discuss opportunities for CPA Australia to work with the Ministry of Finance to support the country’s need for more professionally qualified accountants. Also joining the delegation were Nadzirah Abdul Rashid, Divisional Councillor and Priya Terumalay, Country Head – Malaysia, CPA Australia. (From left) Datuk Chua Tee Yong, Priya Terumalay, Nadzirah Abdul Rashid, and Wong Chin Aik RM 10,000 FOR THE MOTHER TERESA READING SHELTER Following the Run For Hope charity event organised by the Sunway University Business Concilium and sponsored by CPA Australia in November 2014, a total of RM20,000 was raised and donated equally to two charity homes chosen respectively by CPA Australia and Sunway University. The RM 10,000 directed to CPA Australia’s chosen charity, The Mother Teresa Reading Shelter, in Ipoh, Perak, was used to improve the general maintenance of the shelter which provides reading and writing lessons to stateless and orphaned children. The cheque was presented by Priya Terumalay, Country Head - Malaysia, to the Shelter during a visit there on 16 February together with Anna Wong, then Perak Coordinator and Elaine Ong, current Perak Coordinator. A small contribution to help the children at the Mother Teresa Reading Shelter 7 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW CPA AUSTRALIA SIGNS VARIATION AGREEMENT WITH TALENTCORP Malaysian undergraduates completing a degree locally are now able to get an early start to attaining their CPA Australia certification, thanks to a variation agreement between CPA Australia and Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp). Called the UNI-Qualified Fund, this initiative is an extension of the Get Qualified! Fund signed in 2013. While the Get Qualified! Fund supports fresh graduate hires with less than 12 months of working experience, the UNI-Qualified Fund supports Malaysian undergraduates in Year 3 onwards who are currently completing a degree in Malaysia. This funding scheme allows eligible students to take up to two segments of the CPA Program before graduating. Apart from gaining knowledge from the CPA Program segments, participating students who have successfully completed the Ethics and Governance exam will have the opportunity to network with CPA Australia’s Recognised Employers. (From left) Jeff Hughes and Johan Mahmood Merican MoU WITH UITM CPA Australia has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to enable 300 accounting students to begin their CPA Program journey by taking one professional paper while still in university. The agreement signed on 25 May is aimed at accelerating the progression of accounting students in Malaysian universities to become professionally qualified accountants. The signing took place at the UiTM Puncak Alam Campus and was witnessed by Senator Dato’ Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department. Similar expos were also held in Hong Kong, Singapore and six Australian cities. A total of 22 organisations including CPA Australia’s Recognised Employer Partners participated in the expo that included several forums and presentations. Fresh from The Naked CEO book reaching bestseller status in Australia, the author, CPA Australia Chief Executive Alex Malley, treated the attendees to a motivating talk on his intriguing insights with advice on how to build a big life as articulated in his book. The Naked CEO books on sale at the expo sold out in under two hours following his session. Andrew Heng, Partner in Ferrier Hodgson MH, moderated a panel session on why accounting was an appealing career choice. The panel included Sivaruban Kandasamy, Audit Director, KPMG Malaysia; Alan Chung, Executive Director, Tax Advisory & Compliance, SJ Grant Thornton; Dexter Tang, Assistant Manager, PwC Malaysia and Jimmy Lai, Partner, Audit and Financial Advisory, Deloitte Malaysia. Graduates connecting with employers at the Career Expo A special career workshop by CPA Australia’s Content and Social Media Manager, Jillian Bowen, was well received as she engaged with the relatively young and tech savvy audience on the full potential of LinkedIn as a platform to market one’s career. Other activities included resume health check advice and a professional profile photography to help attendees snap professional photos for their resumes and LinkedIn profiles. Student ambassadors with Alex Malley (back row, second from left) (From left) Andrew Heng, Alan Chung, Sivaruban Kandasamy, Jimmy Lai and Dexter Tang 9 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW LONG STANDING MEMBERS FETED AT RECOGNITION EVENINGS Member Recognition Evenings (MREs) were held in several states throughout Malaysia including Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Johor, Penang, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Miri and Sibu between June and December to celebrate long standing members and members who had attained the CPA and FCPA status. All locations registered good member turnout. Among the long standing members recognised this year was Dato’ Robert Wong Lum Kong, Managing Director of Oriental Holdings Bhd and a 43-year veteran in the motor trade industry. Dato’ Robert Wong, who has been a member of CPA Australia since 1965, received his 50-year membership pin during the Kuala Lumpur MRE. In Ipoh and Penang, the MRE was preceded by a talk on GST while in Johor the talk covered Budget 2016. In Miri and Sibu, the topic of presentation was on antiprofiteering. Sivam Visvanathan, an academic who previously nursed an ambition of becoming a medical practitioner, also received his 50-year membership pin during the Johor MRE. These include British Petroleum’s Regional Asia Business Service Centre, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Global Shared Services Centre, Shell International and Astro Malaysia Holdings, all having a highly skilled and diverse workforce. At the close of 2015, the total number of REPs in Malaysia stood at 65. Alex P. The MoU cemented MyPAC’s commitment to work with CPA Australia and will enable further penetration into universities and various employment sectors. They also had the opportunity to visit full-flight simulators and view training sessions that were conducted for new crew members such as in-flight mock-up exercises, water evacuation drills and other safety sessions. The visit was under the auspices of the Young Professionals Network. CPA Australia members at the Training Academy 12 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW SUNWAY TES IS A REGISTERED TUITION PROVIDER CPA Australia has appointed Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence (Sunway TES) as a Registered Tuition Provider for the CPA Program. The appointment is another milestone in the long and mutually beneficial relationship CPA Australia has shared with the Sunway Education Group and will include 36 hours of face to face weekend classes at Sunway TES. Tuition benefits will also include direct access to an expert tutor to assist students through the subject content and networking opportunities with like-minded people. A number of CPA Australia’s Recognised Employer Partners were present at the event to mark the appointment of Sunway TES including representatives from Baker Tilly, BDO Malaysia, Deloitte Malaysia, EY Malaysia, Grant Thornton, IBM, KPMG Malaysia and PwC Malaysia. CPA Australia will offer scholarships to 5 High Distinction UNI-Qualified Fund candidates annually for three years. The scholarship will include support for one CPA Australia segment, one year ASA membership fee waiver and one Membership Entry Pathway Assessment (MEPA) waiver. He shared his career lessons learned the hard way as articulated in his book, as well as challenged the audience to build not only a big career, but also a bigger life. ‘Life Lessons from The Naked CEO’ was Alex Malley captivated the audience at the Securities Commission jointly organised by CPA Australia and the Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC), the training and development arm of the SC. Alex was also interviewed by Eugene Wong, the SC’s Executive Director for Corporate Finance and Investment, for the SC’s online talk show which features leaders from the business community. The interview can be accessed at Conversations@SC universities on the lessons he has learnt in life. The universities included Monash University, Taylors University, INTI University and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Representing the next generation of talents, students were truly inspired as seen from their responses and questions posed to Alex seeking advice on their first steps to leading big careers. In a separate session in Sunway University, Alex inspired more than 400 students from several An inspirational session with more than 400 students in Sunway University Alex Malley with student ambassadors and staff members from CPA Australia and Sunway University 14 MALAYSIA 2015 YEAR IN REVIEW CPA CONGRESS 2015 CPA Congress Kuala Lumpur 2015 hit another high note this year with well over 350 attendees from various industries, public practice, public sector and academia, including students. Held at the One World Hotel on 22 September with the theme ‘Leadership. Strategy. Business’, the tightly packed Congress presented a diverse line up of speakers and sessions. At the first plenary on the act of balancing risk and growth, panellists discussed how forward-thinking companies were able to walk the fine line between risk and growth and the need for companies to understand risk appetite and the capacity to manage risk. Chow Sang Hoe, Managing Partner of the ASEAN Advisory in EY Malaysia, moderated the second plenary session on the shifting global economic climate and its impact on ASEAN economic integration. Plenary 3 looked at the introduction of GST in 2015 that has brought the majority of the population within the tax base, making them stakeholders in the national budget. The panel discussed the impact of inflation and profiteering on society. Plenary 4 panellists shared highlevel views on how corporates have generally approached the threat of cybersecurity. The value-driven real estate market as discussed in Plenary 5, with sustainable growth potential has made Malaysia an attractive property investment destination and option for investors. In his keynote leadership track, CPA Australia Chief Executive, Alex Malley, enthralled delegates with his outlook on the profession and the need for innovative strategies to maintain leadership relevance in the accounting profession. Also celebrated at the dinner were three members who received the President’s Award for Excellence – Service and Leadership for their outstanding support to CPA Australia. The recipients were Associate Professor Dr Foo Yin Fah, Head, Department of Accounting, Banking & Finance in Sunway University; Professor Dr Mazlina @ Norzila Mat Zain, Lecturer in Multimedia University; and Fan Kah Seong, Indirect Tax Partner in Deloitte Malaysia and a member of the Malaysia Division Tax Committee. Since then, CPA Australia has made significant contributions to the development of the Malaysian accounting profession and continues to influence major issues, policies and regulations through strong and enduring relationships with the government of Malaysia, regulators, academic institutions, employers, collaborators and supporters. 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of CPA Australia’s formal presence in Malaysia and the theme chosen for this momentous occasion, ‘Celebrating the past, influencing the future’ is about building on the achievements, celebrating the contributions of important stakeholders and members, and increasing the relevance and profile of the CPA Australia designation in the market place. To usher in the anniversary, a low-key get-together with stakeholders was organised in the CPA Australia Kuala Lumpur office on 24 November. A new landing page on the CPA Australia website was launched at the event to celebrate Malaysian members and their contribution to the community. All members also received the sleek commemorative 60-year calendar to display with pride at work or in the home. With opportunities abound, the size and influence of CPA Australia will continue to grow through members as they establish themselves as thought leaders across a broad spectrum of the corporate and business community. The event broadly introduced the application of Chinese metaphysics, the year of the Fire Monkey and western financial ephemeris. Speaker David Meow, who is a valuation consultant and corporate trainer in capital markets, is an enthusiast in Metaphysics, both Eastern and Western, and has a Diploma in Bazi Mystery from the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics. David covered a broad range of topics for the 2016 market outlook including the analysis of the Five Elements and how these Qi elements affected lives and society in general. David Meow in his element A FUN-FILLED DAY FOR CHILDREN The “Read to me” community social responsibility project of the Young Professionals Network grew into a multifaceted children’s activity day during which 48 children, including underprivileged children from the Sweet Care Welfare Society, enjoyed a fun-filled time. Taking place on 5 December, activities included a story-telling session by Marina Tan, a professional practitioner of theatre for children and a bag painting session with the theme, Sun Bags, led by Candy Pencil Project founder and CPA Australia member Lauren Peng who was featured in the December issue of INTHEBLACK. The Lego session was facilitated by Lego consultants engaged by venue sponsor Bank Rakyat, whose CEO Datuk Mustafha Haji Abdul Razak, is a keen champion of CPA Australia and also Deputy President of Malaysia Division.
