Within Range Spring Edition 2016 A Busy Place It is always a pleasure, as Headteacher, to see our pupils develop academically, and as a Year 11 Form Tutor I know our Year 11 pupils have received an amazing amount of support for their GCSE preparation, which I know they and their families will continue over the Easter holiday. My weekly meetings with Sixth Form students allow me to see how their intellectual curiosity and independence is developing, and how they are preparing for the next stage in their education. We get equal delight when we witness our pupils growing in other ways, such as through the Learning for Living Within Range Issue No. 79 Spring 2016 Special points of interest: Media Trip to Comic Con, Liverpool Bully Ambassador Programme Learning for Living Competition Library News competition, the Spring Concert (see photo above), the German Exchange and the host of sporting success. Our school is a busy place, and I hope you enjoy reading about this term’s activities. Enjoy the Spring holiday (and work hard on revision if you’re in Year 11, 12 or 13!) On Saturday 12th March 33 young pop culture fans from Years 7 to 10 ventured to the Liverpool Echo Exhibition Centre to attend Liverpool’s very first MCM Comic Con. Comic Con is a place for fans of all ages and backgrounds to meet together, with or without costumes, to share stories, ideas or tips on where to find the coolest collectables or how to make the perfect cosplay. The trip was a great way for likeminded students to get together and enjoy a day immersed in all things pop culture. Everywhere you turned there were people in extraordinary cosplay giving students opportunities to get their photographs taken with their heroes. There was also the opportunity for them to meet real life Sci Fi, Anime and gaming stars such as Hannah Spearritt and Andrew Lee Potts from Primeval, Victoria Atkin and Paul Amos from Assasins Creed Syndicate and even Haldir the Elf from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Students were also able to build up their own collections of merchandise from the hundreds of vendors selling very detailed replicas of film props. Some embraced the concept of cosplay with a Vault Dweller, Erin Yager from Attack on Titan, and Grell and Ciel from Black Butler joining us on the coach. We even ended up taking home two spider men! All students were immaculately behaved and some even threw themselves right into the spirit with some amazing cosplay. A fantastic day out for all...even the teachers who could relive their youth and sit in a DeLorean. Here’s to next year’s Comic Con. Miss Walsh, Head of Media Studies Page 2 Within Range Past Students make a Welcome Return We were delighted to welcome back former Year 13 students to our Sixth Form Presentation Evening at the very end of last term. We presented certificates for achievement and awards for service. It was great to hear about their experiences in the first term of university. Pictured are Ben Heap (L) and Josh Jenkins (R) - both exDeputy Head Boys, with Mr Aldridge. Bully Ambassador Programme The Anti-Bullying Ambassador Programme is a scheme that has been set up to combat bullying in Range, but it isn’t just for people who are being bullied. It is for anyone who is feeling isolated, vulnerable or uncomfortable in school. We are a team of students who anyone can speak to about any problems they are having and we will do our best to help and give advice. If you want to speak to any of us, you can find out where we will be throughout the week by visiting the notice board opposite Pupil Reception. Thank you The Anti-Bully Ambassador team ‘A Wonderful Wonderland Experience’ On 8th and 9th March, Year 10 GCSE Drama students treated local primary school children to a performance of 'Alice - The Pantomime'. The Drama students wrote their own play as well as designing the set and costumes. They also choreographed Year 7 students, who performed three dances for the piece. Year 7 students also operated the stage lights for the performance. Mrs Grace, Head of Drama said "I am really proud of all the students. This was entirely their own work and they have done an excellent job!" This was a lovely opportunity for teachers and staff from the local primary schools - St Luke's, Woodlands and St Jerome's - to see former pupils on stage. The primary school children were very well behaved and were a credit to their schools. Issue No. 79 Page 3 Learning for Living In October, students in Year 8 were given the opportunity to enter the Learning for Living Competition. It is a competition which involves all the cluster of Formby schools, both Primary and Secondary. It is run by the John Templeton Foundation which is a worldwide organisation. During an RE lesson the students were asked to write a short essay about something they have experienced and learnt a valuable lesson from. Out of their experience they had to derive a universal moral principle, that if this principle was adopted by everybody, the world would be a more positive, just and peaceful place to live. The presentation evening was held at Range High School on Thursday 17th March 2016 and hosted by Mr Aldridge. The following winners from RHS were presented with a certificate and a cash award: 1st Emily Jordan (8AU) 2nd Connie Gabriel (8CL) / Bethan Hawkins (8PC) In her essay Emily wrote how everyday life can easily get us down, particularly when the media reports so many negative stories. She reflected on how sometimes it is easy to forget that there are many more good things in our lives than bad things. She wrote about how small things can make a big difference, like the time her Dad wrote her a note and hid it in her Maths book. The note listed all her talents and referred to her as being the best daughter any Dad could wish for. She then goes on to write about how she isn’t a ‘morning person’ but simple things like the lollipop man smiling at her and saying, ‘hello’ makes her feel so much better. She concludes her essay by writing, “I thought that the world was a horrible place. But actually, if everybody gave a little gift or note to someone if they were feeling down, or just even smiled and said hello, everybody would be so much happier. Imagine a world where everyone would always walk around smiling, nodding their heads and greeting people. Imagine that! Would you like that kind of world? We can make it happen!” Well done to all participants. Mrs Bridge, Head of RE Student treads the Boards! Congratulations to Year 10 student Eden Birch (10EK), who has successfully auditioned for a part in a musical production of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. Eden is a member of SONG, an award winning Youth Theatre Group based in Southport. SONG will be performing this production, which is based on the classic novel by Jules Verne, at The Atkinson, Southport from 7th to 9th April. Tickets are available from the Box office and is hoped that as many people as possible from Range can get along to support her. Page 4 Within Range Library News ... World Book Day, in March, is always a celebration of the wide variety of books that are now available to us. The £1 book tokens were handed out and students had the opportunity to participate in a literary quiz at lunchtime, proving their knowledge of both the old favourites such as Winnie the Pooh and Mrs Tiggy Winkle and the newer characters who have been introduced to them such as the Dogzombies, Baudelaires and Greg Heffley. Our Year 8 boys, Oscar Holloway (8AU), Matthew Hough (8MST) and Tom Porter (8AU), proved to be literary whizzes, scoring full points and winning first prize. Runners up were Nic Abbott (7AS) and Harvey Cartwright (7AS) with Hannah McNamara (9JP) coming third. Thank you to all who entered. Students participating in the Sefton Super Reads Award are voraciously devouring the chosen titles. As yet there isn’t a single title that stands out as a favourite so we shall be waiting with bated breath for the awards ceremony, to be held in Crosby, in June. Two of the World Book Day Quiz Winners Mrs Hawkins, Learning Resources Manager ‘Get a Life’ at Range Sefton EBP (Education Business Partnership) spent an enjoyable morning at Range with Year 11 students recently. They were working on ‘Get a Life’ Sefton EBP’s fast paced Enterprise activity focussed on financial literacy The students worked in small groups and tackled numerous tasks solving problems around money and finance. We ended the session by looking at their plans for the future - what sort of life do they want to lead and how will they match this to their likely future income? One of the tasks which flummoxed most of the students (and their teachers!) was the anagram section - can you solve this anagram? It’s a term to do with managing your money (and it’s relevant to young people, but also to most adults!) Our anagram was: TOPNOTCH CRANE Well done to students from Range, who all participated enthusiastically, and also learned financial terminology and skills around managing their money. Taken from the Sefton EBP Newletter (Answer to anagram on back page) Issue No. 79 Page 5 Maths Challenge Results 89 pupils took part in this year's UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. Our pupils achieved 6 golds, 17 silvers and 19 bronzes. Congratulations! Unfortunately there was no French exchange this year, but the German Exchange programme continues to flourish and took place this year for the 20th time. To mark these special occasion most of the Range High School staff who have ever taken part in the exchange had a celebratory meal, which was also attended by Helene Büschel who started the exchange all those years ago with her good friend Maria McKean, formerly Head of German at Range. We hosted a group of 23 German pupils from our partner school in Bavaria, the Realschule Neutraubling, accompanied by their teachers Frau Marianne Nicklas and for the last time, having visited our school on no fewer than 7 previous occasions, Honorat Hefele. The visit was a great success and our pupils, Mrs Nunn, Mr Aldridge and I are looking forward to our return visit from 13th to 20th July. Look out for a full account of our trip in the Christmas edition of ‘Within Range’. Here is an account of the English leg of the German exchange from Anna Ferguson (9AM) and friends. Mr Mackenzie, German Exchange Co-ordinator On 1st of March 2016, 23 German pupils arrived at Range High School, to be greeted by 23 excited English pupils all holding 1 letter of the ‘Welcome to Range High School’ banner. After eating a buffet lunch Mr Aldridge officially welcomed the 23 German pupils and their 2 teachers to our school. We then did fun ice breaker activities and played bench ball and took our partners home. We introduced our partners to our families. We had a great talk and found out a lot about each other. The next day at the end of break all 46 pupils hopped on a train to Southport. We had free time in Southport then we had a mayoral reception at the Town Hall. On Thursday and Friday our partners went on day trips. On Thursday they went to Chester and on Friday they went to the Albert Dock. We then spent the weekend with our partners and our families. On Monday we all went to Anfield for a guided tour of the stadium then to the Anglican cathedral for a guided tour. Then at seven o’clock everyone came with their family to school for a party. Then in the morning, sadly, it was time to say goodbye. We waved them off as the train slowly departed. We would highly recommend taking part in the German exchange as it is a fun-filled experience and a great way to make new friends! Issue No. 79 Page 7 Taylor Shaw - Reasons to Celebrate! To develop our links with local primary schools, several Year 12 students, along with Mrs Gilbert and Mrs Swift, have started a project with the Year 3 children at Woodlands Primary School. The children decided that they would like to brighten up a corner outside their dinner hall with an underwater theme and our resident mermaid, previously on display here, has taken a little holiday down the road! Faye Gilfoyle (12JMU), Lucy Sudlow (12JMU) and Emma Ryan (12NS) have been helping one class to develop their relief printing techniques by making fish prints. The other group have been busy with 3D design, making cardboard fish in the style of artist Jason Scarpace, currently a project undertaken by our Year 9 students. “I really enjoy going to Woodlands, I like helping the children to learn about new things , like making the fish.” Emma Ryan “I really enjoy going to Woodlands because I love helping the children with their artwork.” Faye Gilfoyle Issue No. 79 Page 9 Sports Leaders @ Range pupils. To become a Sports Leader pupils had to apply and we were delighted that over 28 pupils handed in a letter of application. The quality of written communication was excellent and as a result we have lots of excellent leaders enrolled on the course. The leaders are involved in the running of a cross country event for local primary schools in aid of sports relief; we hope the event will be a raging success. In addition to this the Leaders will start to go into local primary schools and deliver their planned sporting sessions over the next few weeks. The Sports Leaders Level 1 Award started in January 2016, when is was offered to year 10 Well done for all the hard work, keep it up. Miss Seagraves, PE Department First Taste of Tournament for Year 7 Hockey Girls The Year 7 girls’ hockey team attended their first hockey tournament on 17th March. They were a delight to take and all enjoyed their first hockey experience. Range came 5th in the 'A' tournament, after playing schools that have been playing competitive fixtures all season. We played 5 games & although we didn't win any we played well and put up a good fight. The results were: Bluecoat 0-0, St Edwards 3-0, Liverpool College 3-0, Merchant Taylors 1-0, Greenbank 1-0. Sophie Hall was my player of the tournament and Alice Nevin played well in defence. The girls are looking forward to playing a bit more hockey in Year 8. The team: Olivia Dowling (c) (7DG), Liberty Murphy (7CT), Emily Porter (7MCM), Libby Glenning (7CT), Alice Nevin (7CT), Lizzie McCoy (7MCM), Jess Mordaunt (7CT), Sophie Hall (7KS). Miss Burns, Girls’ Hockey Coach Page 10 Within Range Girls’ Rugby Festival In the recent Merseyside County round of the RFU Girls' Rugby Festival the under 13 team played really well to reach the semi-final stage, winning 3 games and losing 1. They still qualified for the latter stages of the event due to their try scoring but they lost out to a strong Rainford High School team in the semi-final who will go on to represent Merseyside at the Regional finals later in the season. Our under 13 squad is made up of girls from Years 7 & 8: Rachel Robinson (8AMM), Olivia Mulvey (8MST), Beatrice Beckett (8PP), Molly Graham (8AMM), Jemima Swift (8MST), Hannah Gallimore (8AU), Rebecca Cain (8CL), Liberty Murphy (7CT), Ella Pruden (7KS). inter-play and 4 spectacular tries. Scorers were Jemima Swift and Beatrice Beckett with one each, and a brace of tries for Molly Graham saw us finish the pool games on a high. Our first game was against Wade Deacon from Widnes and we won a close game 2-1. Beatrice Beckett scored both of our tries from long range. We then went on to beat Bluecoat School 4-0 with tries from Beatrice Beckett, Jemima Swift, Olivia Mulvey and Ella Pruden. Both Ella and Liberty, our two year 7s, were experiencing their first taste of full contact rugby and both played really well throughout. We lost our third game to Haydock High School 2-1 due to some silly mistakes. We forced some passes and ran off the pitch twice which gave possession back to this bigger team who weren't really as skilful as the Range players. This year there were 12 teams in the Merseyside Tournament and almost 300 schools entered nationally. This is a bigger number of schools entering than there are in some of the traditional girls' games competitions like hockey and netball. All nine girls were a credit to the school. They play hard and train hard and show all the qualities that make up rugby's core values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sports(wo)manship. Full contact rugby continues on a Monday evening after school up to Easter and after the spring break Touch Rugby will start on a Monday lunchtime for all girls in Key Stage 3. Miss Burns Girls’ Rugby Coach Not ones to lower their heads, our squad went positively into their final pool game against OCR and played really well with some fantastic team Issue No. 79 Page 11 Y8 Merseyside Hockey Tournament Range Hockey teams entered the Year 8 Merseyside Schools' Tournament recently. There were two separate competitions for the A and B teams and we are pleased to announce that the A team came 4th overall and the B team won! Other schools taking part included Merchant Taylors, Liverpool College, St Edwards, Greenbank and Bluecoat. The A team top scorer was Isobel Evans (8AU) and the B team top scorer was Charlotte Whitelaw (8AU). The B team Player of the Tournament as voted for by the organiser was Hannah Gallimore (8AU). The girls have been committed to pre-school training sessions every week and their hard work paid off. They were a pleasure to take to the tournament as they are always well behaved, they give of their best and are consequently a credit to Range High School. Year 9 Rugby Team Retain Title! Range High School retained their North West Emerging Schools title with a thrilling, closely fought encounter with Standish High School recently. The winning score, 20-17 was achieved in the dying moments of the game when Louis Vidamour gathered the ball 30 metres out and out paced the defence to touch down. Earlier tries from Captain Alex Buck, Keir Gordon and Chris Seitis had nudged Range ahead before Standish struck back with three well taken tries, one garnished with an all important conversion. Time seemed to be running out for Range but champions never accept defeat and they continued to push, looking for the decisive score which came just before the referee’s whistle signalled time to celebrate! Earlier in the season, the Year 9 team lost in the Lancashire Cup in the quarter finals to Rossall School and in the Plate Competition at the same stage to Bolton School. Both defeats , against fee paying schools with regular Saturday fixtures were very close and so the boys can be very proud of Page 12 their performances this year. Mr Cropper, Boys’ Rugby Coach Team: Josh Pieles (9HDB), James Connaughton (9CRG), Liam Doherty (9CRG), Chis Seitis (9JP), Alex Buck (9HDB), Sam Neary (9JLL), Keir Gordon (9HDB), Ethan Esgin (9JP), Jack Terry (9AM), Alex McCoy (9CDA), Joe Jones (9JEM), Tom Kwissa (9AM), Sam Nourish (9JEM), Alex Harcombe (9KHU), Finn Gordon (9HDB), Louis Vidamour (9HDB). Boys who played in earlier rounds but missed the final: Gabe Ellis (9JEM), Joe Fleming (9JEM), Dylan Wordley (9CDA), Kyle Parr (9HDB). Within Range Netball Success! There have been many successes in netball this season. The Year 7 and 8 teams have made steady progress with notable achievements in the Southport and Formby tournament. 7A won the 'Fair Play' award, which is given to the teams who respect the rules and their opponents throughout the competition. 7B played a fantastic tournament and placed 3rd, 8A placed 4th and the 8B team were runners up! Well done girls - keep up the good work next season. The Year 9/U14 netball team have seen fantastic successes this year. They made it through the regional round of the National Schools Netball competition to the regional finals, and went through to the County Finals in first place and finished overall County runners up! The U14 Netball Team The Year 10 netball team have had a mixed season, they started the year well but also suffered some losses. They placed 3rd in the Southport and Formby tournament and also entered the County tournament. The U18 netball team have had a hugely successful season and remain unbeaten outside of the tournaments that they have entered. The U18's also progressed through to National Schools Regional finals and went through to the County finals in first place. They had a fantastic tournament, winning every game and finishing as County Champions! Well done, ladies! Miss Singleton Netball Coach The U18 Netball Team Year 11 Boys’ Football Update The boys unfortunately were knocked out of the Sefton cup in an entertaining though tough game against Deyes High. The game was played at the neutral venue of Formby Football Club and was evenly contested with the weather playing a part. This is the last competition the Year 11s were involved in as a team before the pupils move into sixth form and whatever lies ahead after Range. At this point I would like to say that it has been a joy to be the teacher in charge of the team from Year 7. Winning the Sefton Cup in Year 7 feels like yesterday! One of my favourite memories is of our trip to Ajax. Well done to all Year 11s who have ever represented the school over the past 5 years - it has been a joy and pleasure. Mr Dougherty, Head of PE Issue No. 79 Page 13 Boys and Girls at the Double! Our Year 10 sports leaders did a great job of running the event. Well done St Luke's runners and our sports leaders. Basketball @ Range The Year 7 team have played 3 fixtures this term, with matches against Christ the King, Formby High and Birkdale High. The enthusiasm and dedication of the team has been fantastic! Alex Maher (7ABO) has been pivotal in the success of the team, in particular, by driving them forward. Joe Jones (9JEM) has been excellent at giving coaching advice and setting up drills that the boys have benefitted from. A forthcoming trip to see the Harlem Globetrotters will hopefully give the boys lots of tips on how to become the best! Well done boys and remember ‘practice makes perfect’.
