Introducing RMR Laminate Backing Shims
OE Quality Steering and Suspension parts
New RMR (rubber-metal-rubber) shims are added to brake pads to maximise
noise reduction throughout a brake pad’s lifetime, especially during the
bedding-in period.
Here at your local branch, we moved quickly to keep you supplied with quality
steering & suspension parts following the announcement on 6th February 2013
that Quinton Hazell (QH) had gone into administration.
The shim insulates the noise produced by the pad backing plate within the
caliper. The new rubber fibres used to enhance the performance of these shims
means our pads achieve OE standard.
Steering and suspension components for main stream applications are available
from First Line to complement those already supplied from FAI, Febi and Blue
Print (specialists for American, Japanese and Korean applications). All of the
steering and suspension components we supply are designed and manufactured
to match Original Equipment quality standards.
All Allied Nippon shims feature our ‘clip on design’, which helps to secure the
shim on to the back plate, and prevent any shim rotation inside the caliper,
maximising noise reduction efficiency.
Our steering and suspension ranges include wishbones, track control arms, tie
rod ends, axial joints, stabiliser links, ball joints, top strut mounts, king pins and
a wide variety of bushes.

Cambridgeshire who scooped an iPad in a recent online promotion to support
the launch of the all new and improved Ferodo® Premier packaging. Steve
Breed Motor Engineers is a customer of IFA Member, Hereward Car & Truck.
Three years ago 55% of new cars were equipped with hydraulic steering and
less than 30% with EPS. Now, the situation has reversed, with approx. 53% of
new cars being specified with EPS.

Start/Stop Systems
There has been a significant increase in vehicles featuring Start/Stop systems. As of 2013 manufacturers
must ensure that 75% of the new cars registered in the EU have average emissions that are below 130
grams CO2 per km. The percentage rises to 80% in 2014 and 100% in 2015. Start/Stop systems are
making a significant contribution, facilitating a fuel reduction of up to 8%. From 2013 on, every second
new car in Europe is expected to be fitted with a Start/Stop system. There will be a significant demand
from workshops for the corresponding parts required for professional replacement.
Start/Stop systems allow CO2 emissions to
be reduced by up to 15% (in heavy urban
traffic conditions). They also reduce noise
pollution.
The engine stops when:
• vehicle speed is below 3 km/h
• gears are in neutral position
• the clutch pedal is not being pressed
• the steering wheel is not being turned (no
type of assistance needed)
• the motor is idling
The engine does not stop if:
• the servo brake vacuum drops
below a set threshold
• the battery is flat
• climate control demands use
of the a/c compressor
• the temperature of the coolant
liquid is 20 to 50 ºC
• the outside temperature is lower
than -10ºC or higher than 50ºC
Start/Stop systems may include additional
features depending on the vehicle
manufacturer:
• disconnection when the bonnet is opened
to avoid automatic start while work is
being done on the engine
• disconnection after unfastening the seat
belt in order to avoid leaving the vehicle
without stopping it

Digital Motor Electronics (DME)

A comprehensive engine management system: Digital Motor
Electronics (DME) control all key aspects of the engine’s operation,
ensuring optimum reliability, maximum performance and the
lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions
Fine tuning for fuel injection: Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE) system
manages all engine functions in diesel models. This saves fuel, ensures
great performance and helps reduce exhaust emissions, minimising
impact on the environment
There are few issues with Start/Stop systems, but the following anomalies may be encountered:

When the engine is started the radio
and/or GPS is disconnected:
Check the on-board stabilizer (CC/CC) ECU. It
stabilises tension on on-board networks. In a
starting phase the voltage decreases briefly which
can switch off some of the electronic devices.
When getting out of the car a warning
is displayed on the dashboard:
If at the same time as the car stops, the Start/
Stop is activated or deactivated and the safety
belt is released, the Start/Stop management
system can become confused, hence the error
message on the dashboard
Start/Stop System Components vs
Conventional Systems:
1.
Due to constant start ups, a current stabilizer avoids power
spikes. When the engine is started (or the battery voltage
is below 10.5V) the stabilizer feeds the vehicle electrical
system through an internal battery. This is called Boost
mode. Once the start-up stage is completed, the system
operates without the stabilizer in what is called Bypass
mode, and takes the opportunity to recharge the internal
accumulator.
2. Vehicles with Start/Stop technology commonly have
batteries with AGM technology (Absorbed Glass Mat).
AGM Batteries withstand numerous deep discharges
and have a low rate of self-discharge. They need no
maintenance. In some vehicles after replacement, a reset
using a diagnostic tool is required.
3. An improved starter motor is fitted, with a greater lifespan
due to more usage. The bearings are strengthened,
planetary gear improved and a stronger pinion drive used.
4. The alternator is improved to be 60% more efficient and
to enable more battery charge at lower RPM.

The Start/Stop system does not stop the
engine, or it happens irregularly:
Check the outside temperature.

The engine starts without reason:
• the brake’s vacuum is too low
• battery charge too low
• A/C evaporator temperature too high
• too much fog inside the car
Diagnostics & Start/Stop Systems:
Check these components whenever diagnostics are carried
out on a Start/Stop system:

Start/Stop System Issues
C ASE STUDY
A car has been taken to several workshops because
the Start/Stop system is not working.
A wiring diagram is used to check all the Start/Stop
system components and corresponding sensors,
but the diagnostic tool does not detect any ‘out of
range’ parameter for any of the components. The
reason why the Start/Stop system is not operating is
still unknown.
The bonnet contact position sensor cannot
be diagnosed (no values are displayed on the
diagnostic tool). BUT the bonnet contact switch
is a component of the Start/Stop network and
can influence the activity of the whole Start/Stop
system.
The bonnet contact switch may be defective and/
or the bonnet position sensor may not be working
properly. This might cause the ECU to detect an
open position, preventing the Start/Stop system
from operating.
Sure enough, in this case the solution was to
replace the bonnet switch!

Start/Stop System Components in Detail
Start/Stop systems require the collaboration of a range of different components
Starters
The starter motor service life is increased
considerably so that the starter motor is able
to withstand the frequent starts made over the
lifetime of the vehicle. Increased service life is
achieved by:
• Strengthening the bearings which come
under severe strain
• Improvement of the planetary gear
• Use of a stronger starter pinion drive
• Commutator optimization lengthens
service life
Alternators
Alternators for Start/Stop systems create more
electrical energy for the on-board diagnostics,
even at low speeds and directly after the
vehicle has been started. Together with the
high-performance battery, they ensure the
Start/Stop function works in all circumstances.
• Improved electrical design and optimized
materials
• Particularly efficient at low speeds
• High efficiency diode technology (HED)
• Greater efficiency of up to 77%
• Greater fuel savings of up to 2%
• Noise-optimized
Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
The ECU is fitted with additional interfaces
for starters and sensors (battery sensor, crank
shaft sensor, wheel speed sensor, neutral gear
sensor). The software analyzes relevant data
from the sensors, signalling when the engine
can be switched off.
Sensors
The sensors deliver information to the ECU to
optimize the starting sequence:
• Neutral gear sensor: shows if the vehicle
is in gear
• Wheel speed sensor: shows the direction
in which the wheel is rotating and when it
comes to a stop
• Intelligent crank shaft sensor: reports on
engine activity
• Differential pressure sensor for the brake
booster: monitors brake booster pressure
during the stop phase to ensure booster
performance after starting
Filters
Vehicles with Start/Stop systems start
approximately six times more often than
conventional vehicles. As a result the fuel filter
is exposed to more frequent strong pressure
pulsations. Fuel filters need to be particularly
sturdy, with stronger housing, gasket seals and
cover to prevent bursting.

DC-DC Converter
When actuating the starter, the voltage level
of the on-board diagnostics decreases at
short notice. This can affect the function of
electronic comfort devices (eg radio reception
is briefly interrupted or navigation system
switches off). DC-DC converters for
Start/Stop systems stabilize the voltage when
starting the engine to prevent interference with
comfort functions.
Electronic Energy Management
The ECU, the integrated Start/Stop coordinator
and the battery sensor are the most important
components of the energy management
system for vehicles with a Start/Stop system.
The cycle-proof battery (EFB or AGM
technology) and the DC-DC converter are also
very important components.
The EBS (electronic battery sensor) is a
key component of the electronic energy
management:
• Built into the battery terminal
• It records (accurately and dynamically)
operating data such as electricity, voltage
and temperature
• With the measured values, it monitors the
performance of the battery and determines
energy consumption and emission
Battery Requirements
Start/Stop systems place ever greater demands
on vehicle batteries. In addition to greater
performance, the key attribute is higher cycle
stability compared to conventional
starter batteries. They have to supply the
energy for the frequent engine starts and
the electrical consumer units in the vehicle
during the stop phase. These requirements are
fulfilled by batteries with EFB technology
(Enhanced Flooded Battery) as well as batteries
with AGM technology (Absorbent Glass Mat).
For systems with recuperation (regenerative
braking), AGM batteries are used.
Diagnosis and Battery Replacement
It is not recommended that motorists change
batteries in vehicles with Start/Stop systems as
many of these vehicles (e.g. Audi, BMW, Volvo)
require a suitable control unit diagnostic tool
for the battery replacement, to:
• register the new battery in the vehicle
• programme technical data, e.g. amp hour
and product number
VMs (vehicle manufacturers) take different
approaches when it comes to battery
replacement. Check the vehicle’s service
manual.
Take care selecting a new battery. Use only
those approved by the VM. As a general rule,
conventional lead acid batteries should not be
used. An AGM battery may only be replaced
by an AGM battery, however an EFB battery
may be replaced by an EFB or an AGM battery.
If the wrong type of battery is inserted, the
Start/Stop system will not function properly
and the battery’s service life will be reduced.
A fully charged battery is even more important
during colder periods for vehicles with Start/
Stop systems. It is recommended that batteries
are charged each time the vehicle is in the
workshop.

EGR Valves - Adaptation
Question:
I recently replaced an EGR valve but
the vehicle is registering
the same faults. I checked related
components (the air mass
sensor, throttle body & vacuum pum
p) which are in good
condition & functioning correctly.
Have I missed something?
Answer:
When replacing electronic compone
nts such as EGR valves,
air mass sensors & throttle bodies,
many modern vehicles
require an ‘adaptation’ process to
recognise & ‘learn’ the
characteristics of the newly fitted
component. The new
component may appear not to work
without this process.
Adaptation can be completed by a
longer test drive which
allows a full set of sensor calibratio
ns to occur. Alternatively
use the ‘default setting’, ‘basic setti
ng’ or ‘adaptation’
options on the diagnostic tool.
