Green Island Community Experience
reen Island has retained its African dance from the Congo that’s called Dinki Mini or Gerreh. The dance, along with its music, is performed to announce the death of a villager and again on the ninth night (‘nine-night’ or ‘set-up’)) after death; it is sometimes performed at the burial site. Some descendants of Maroons--Africans who fled to the hills and survived in free societies--have kept knowledge of the meanings of many of their African rituals intact. The different ethnicities that settled in this part of the island have retained a lot of the heritage that they brought to Jamaica from Europe, Asia, and Africa over 500 years ago. Surnames from different countries in Europe can still be recognized. But today, these names belong to people of mixed ancestry. Hence, the official motto of Jamaica is: “Out of many, one people.” Jamaica Jamaica Creative Co-operative (Creative Ja) For further information and reservations: (876) 953-9895(6) (876) 507-6326 [email protected] [email protected] CARIBIC VACATIONS LIMITED /OLYMPIA TOURS 1310 Providence Drive, Ironshore Estate, Montego Bay, St. James, Jamaica.
